QUALITYOFWORKLIFEQUESTIONNAIRE
Overview
In2000,NIOSHenteredintoaninteragencyagreementwiththeNationalScienceFoundationtoaddaspecialmoduleassessingthe
qualityofworklifeinAmericatothe2002GeneralSocialSurvey.TheGeneralSocialSurveyisabiannual,nationallyrepresentative,
personalinterviewsurveyofU.S.householdsconductedbytheNationalOpinionResearchCenterandfundedbytheNationalScience
Foundation.Usingasmallgroupprocesswithinternalandexternalexpertteams,NIOSHselected76questionsdealingwithawide
assortmentofworkorganizationissues.Theseinclude(butarenotlimitedto)hoursofwork,workload,workerautonomy,layoffsandjob
security,jobsatisfaction/stress,andworkerwellbeing.HalfofthequestionsintheQualityofWorklifemoduleweretakendirectlyfrom
the1977QualityofEmploymentSurvey,allowingcomparisonsofworkerresponsesovera25yearperiod.

TheprimarygoalsoftheQualityofWorklifemodulearetomeasurehowworklifeandtheworkexperiencehavechangedsincetheearlier
QualityofEmploymentSurveysandtoestablishbenchmarksforfuturesurveys.Secondarygoalsincludemeasuringtherelationship
betweenjob/organizationalcharacteristicsandworkerhealthandsafetyandidentifyingtargetsforhealthandsafetypreventive
interventions.
ThepersonalinterviewdatawerecollectedintheFall/Winterof2002andthefinaldatasetcontainsresponsesfrom1,796persons.The
QWLmodulewasreadministeredintheFall/Winterof2006and2010.Responsescamefrom1,734and1,187persons,respectively.The
2006modulewasidenticaltothe2002module.The2010modulewasmodifiedslightlytoreflectemergingriskfactorstoworkersafety
andhealth.Thesemodificationsincludedtheadditionoffournewitems,therevisionofone2002/2006item,andtheremovaloffive
2002/2006items.Thefollowinglistofmodulecategoriesandconstructsindicateswherethesemodificationsoccurred.
