Survey Says!

2016
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this learning opportunity, you will possess the skills necessary to:
1. Work with group members on a topic to build a survey interview and administer it to a
specific demographic.
a. This allows them the experience of collaboratively creating a survey interview.
2. Assess interviewees level of knowledge about and attitudes toward a current issue in a
visual report.
a. This gives them the experience of tabulating, interpreting, analyzing, and
reporting on a data set.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
For this learning opportunity, the class will be divided into small, virtual pairs (or groups of 3 if
necessary). If you are able to meet up on-campus you are welcome to do so but it is not
necessary in order to complete this task.
1. Each group will select a topic that has a degree of controversy. It should be a topic that
people cling to their positions emotionally. Think about current events that you hear
about on the news or see on social media (Gay marriage, legalizing marijuana,
affordable healthcare just to name a few). The topic need not reflect a national
concern, but may feature a local issue or even a topic relating to PNC (merging of
Calumet and Westville campuses for example).
2. Each group member is required to do background research on the topic.
a. You may break up the topic amongst yourselves.
b. Each student will submit their portion of the research (whether that is notes
taken while researching or a bibliography of the sources they used it does not
need to be a formal written document) to demonstrate they shared the
background research responsibility.
3. As a team, student pairs will develop a highly scheduled standardized interview that
includes a variety of question strategies.
4. Once the question schedule is complete, each group member will administer the survey
to at least six individuals.
a. Be sure to determine the target audience you are interested in studying for your
topic.
b. Ensure that all group members utilize the same survey and it is administered in
the same manner.
5. Tabulate all results within your group.
6. Each group will submit the following:
a. The schedule of questions used in the survey
b. The tabulation of the results this should be represented visually (but may be
written out in a report if that will allow for better explanation). Be creative.

c. The rationale for the selection of the interviewee types.
7. Each individual will submit the following:
a. An analysis and critique of the interviews that you personally conducted. This
analysis should address and problems with the schedule of questions, problems
with openings/closings, and/or problems with motivating interviewees to
respond.
b. Your documentation demonstrating you conducted your share of the
background research (as discussed above).
c. Please note: I do not need the results of every individual survey

conducted. I am looking for a visual representation of the groups

results.

the above stated directions and how creative you are with the overall assignment.
If necessary, detailed feedback will be provided on your submitted documents through the

you are unfamiliar with this tool. If detailed feedback is not needed, comments may be

deliverables - but you will also be responsible for posting, as a group, your visual representation
