of antibody generation takes about two weeks. Afterwards, if
a live virus enters your body, the immune system can respond
and destroy it. Since the flu virus changes every year, last years

WHEN IT COMES TO

HEART DISEASE,

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER.

Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season, according to the CDC. Its especially important for some people to get vaccinated, including:

Leaves are changing and a chill is in the air not to mention

coughs, runny noses and sneezes. Fall is here, and with it comes
the advent of flu season, which means its time to get your annual flu immunization.
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by
influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious
cases can result in hospitalization or death.
The best way to avoid getting the flu is to have an annual flu
vaccination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). Flu vaccines are offered in many locations,
including doctors offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers,
and even in some schools.
Health experts recommend that adults and children receive a
flu vaccine well ahead of the flu season. Seasonal flu activity
can begin as early as October and generally peaks in the U.S. in
January or February, but can continue to occur as late as May.

Porter Regional Hospital is directly or indirectly owned by a partnership that proudly includes physician owners, including certain members of the hospitals medical staff.

Just like other vaccinations, the flu vaccine is made from a killed
virus. When this virus is injected (flu shot) or inhaled (nasalspray flu vaccine), your bodys immune system recognizes that
a foreign substance is present. It then makes antibodies, which
are proteins that attach to the virus. These antibodies signal the

people who are at high risk of developing serious complications (like pneumonia) if they get sick with the flu

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated?

Some people should not get a flu vaccine without first consulting their doctor. These include:
people who have had a severe reaction to a flu vaccination
children younger than 6 months of age
people who have a moderate-to-severe illness, with or without a fever (they should wait until they recover to get vaccinated.)
In addition, anyone who has ever had a severe allergic reaction
to eggs or has had a severe allergy to any part of this vaccine
should talk with their doctor before having the vaccination.
The flu vaccine is not guaranteed to prevent the flu, but minimizes your chances of contracting the flu virus and, if you do get
the flu, the vaccine helps to minimize the symptoms
Talk with your doctor about getting your flu shot or any other vaccinations that you may need. And if you dont have a doctor, we can
help you with that, too. To find a doctor to meet your health needs,

What Shorewood Residents are Asking

Q: Are there any surgical options to help long-term heartburn
or GERD suffers?
A: Most conventional treatments for heartburn are temporary
because they treat the symptoms and not the root cause of the
problem. Chronic heartburn is likely caused by GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. This condition triggers an excessive amount of gastric juices backwashing into the esophagus,
which can cause discomfort. Patients with severe GERD
are finding relief from a surgical procedure called Transoral

the esophagus, explained Dr. Conn. It is done under general
anesthesia and takes less than an hour to complete. Dr. Conn
added that most people go home the next day and return to
work within a few days.
Dr. Conn is a member of the medical staff at Porter Regional Hospital. He is board certified in surgery and, he and Dr. Jac Cooper perform the TIF procedures. To schedule an appointment with

Al and Carol McMichael enjoyed the Fourth of July weekend

with their annual family get-together at Camp Valpo. All
three of their children traveled with their families to the McMichael home in Shorewood. The Atlanta McMichaels: Jeff and
his two boys, Jett and Preston arrived early in the week to enjoy
some time with Nana and Papa swimming at the pool and boating. Steve and Peggy from Germantown, Wisconsin with their
three sons, Matt, Brett and Bryan were the next to arrive, followed by the Grays Lake, Illinois clan belonging to Connie and
Rick; which includes Andrew, Lauren and her fianc John. We
cant forget the Illinois canine members: Ginger and Lucy!
The family enjoyed, fishing, swimming, the annual cornhole

The family especially enjoys this patriotic holiday and it shows

I see people make in

that are easily avoidable.
Most are fully aware of
what they are, but the
lists below address just
about all of them; they

update your will, sign a medical power of attorney and sign a

To get started on the retirement planning end of the spectrum, your financial planner will need a few things from you.
We use the answers to build out your financial plan which
allows us to test your retirement income strategy versus historic market returns. Below are some of the questions I might
ask a potential retiree

Investments
Social Security
Pension
Profit-sharing
Income from work after retirement
Tapping home equity
Of course there are special circumstances that could add several
additional areas to this list. The homework of starting to answer
these questions with your advisor will make your retirement
plan just that much more tangible.

Meet Margy Boyce.

Caring Designs Manager/Designer
For over two years, Margy has served as a volunteer for
The Caring Place, helping clients from the shelter as they
transition into their apartments. She creates a beautiful new
space for them with their favorite colors & styles
offering a place they can call home & start fresh. This
has also served as a great tool for keeping victims of
domestic violence from going back into shelter or back to
their abusers. Margy & her amazing team have now done
over 35 reveals & continue their work each day!
With so many donations of gently-used furniture, it
became apparent that it would be a great opportunity to
open a resale store to benefit The Caring Place. In the fall
of 2013, Caring Designs Upscale Resale Showroom
opened! Margy & her talented team paint, reupholster
& refurnish many of the items making them unique & like

Sport & Luxury

By Beverly & Steve Smirnis

Youve earned the right to get that sports car youve always
wanted, and now you can have itsans the guilt from shelling
out an exorbitant amount, minus limitations in seating only
two, and no scorn from those judgmental ones at the gas pump,
either. Four-Door Sports Coupes are a perfect balance between
sport and luxury, egotism and practicality, edgy and elegant,
power and efficiency. Shark-like in their appearance, under
$100K, and decked out with the luxuries one would expect from
the top shelf manufacturers, these cool, comfortable and capable
rides bring a new segment of the population to the buying table.

Many who may have never considered Maserati may rethink

that now; our test model was delivered for $87,730 and the base
starts at $65K. Point and launch this one confidently in any
direction, but expect a sportier response with 404 hp via two
parallel-mounted low-inertia turbochargers. All this with Q4
all-wheel-drive delivered 15/25 mpg. Pure Italian fashion with
dramatic color combinations, the iconic Trident emblem, plenty
of ummph, and that sensuous engine growl entices the spirited
driver to this oneand theres room in the back to bring along
the kids or some friends you cant resist showing off to.

beside it. The 2014 model is stronger and longer, while remaining
purely Porsche in form. Inside finish could only be described as
modern sculpture with plenty of futuristic angles. Its 3.6 liter
V-6 gets 310 hp, which it delivers effortlessly with perfect power
to weight ratio and no head jarring; rated at 18/28 mpg.

The cool and sexy ride of choice

for characters like Ray Donovan,
the Mercedes CLS is the godfather of this vehicle segment.

27

The Mercedes 2014 CLS 550 is available in rear-wheel or 4Matic

all-wheel-drive variations powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.7
liter V8 delivering an exhilarating 402 hp. Its standard stop-start
system lowers fuel consumption to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg
combined for the rear-drive; just 1 mpg less on the 4Matic. Finely engineered accoutrements make the refined ride of the CLS
hard to match.
We drove the base model BMW 640i Gran Coupe powered by a
315-hp turbocharged incline six-cylinder engine. Rear wheel drive
gave it a heavier, muscular, secure-feeling ridelike a rocket being
launched. Everything about it resembles the 6-series 2-door coupe,
with a key difference being that its wheelbase is 2.4 inches longer,
creating more rear seat leg room and seating three rear passengers,
unlike most others in the segment that seat only two. A M-Sport
package added to our models overall athletic stance and feel.
Audis leadership in turbo diesel technology makes the TDI a
favorite, delivering 24/28 mpg! Mated to Quattro all-wheel-drive,
the A7 delivers an extremely balanced and nimble drive. It also
seats 5 passengers and its hatchback body style gives it superior
cargo space. Audis electronic features also stand out, particularly
the nav system with maps provided by Google Earth.
Seeing the Porsche Panamera coming at you on the freeway or
zooming up behind it, you wont realize its a sedan until you are
