Welcome to Chemistry!
The purpose of this syllabus is to inform you of classroom policies and expectations during this course.
The chemistry course encourages students to continue their investigation of the structure of matter along
with chemical reactions and the conservation of energy in these reactions. The curriculum includes inquiry
into the following content areas:

Unit 1: Introduction & Measurements

Unit 2: The Atom
Unit 3: The Periodic Table
Unit 4: Chemical Bonding
Unit 5: Chemical Reactions
Unit 6: Stoichiometry

Unit 7: Reaction Rates & KMT

Unit 8: Heat & Phase Change
Unit 9: Solutions
Unit 10: Equilibrium
Unit 11: Nuclear Chemistry

Daily Supplies:
3 ring binder (at least 1-2)
Notebook paper
No. 2 pencils
Blue and black ink pens
Highlighters
Homework
*Note: A scientific calculator is beneficial and will be provided during class time. (Note: Scientific
calculators can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, etc. for approximately $5-10.)

Classroom Expectations:
Be on time and bring required materials to class daily.
Be respectful of yourself, your peers, your teachers, and your school.
Expect to stay in class. You must use your hall pass for bathroom trips.
NO FOOD, DRINKS, GUM, CANDY, ETC. IN THE CLASSROOM AT ANY TIME. (except water)
You are here to learn and I am here to teach you. Any behavior that prohibits that from taking place
will not be tolerated!

Leaving the Room

You will not leave the room unless it is an emergency.
Trips to your locker will not be allowed at all. It is your responsibility to come to class prepared.
Use your time between classes wisely. You will be given 5 bathroom passes. After your 5 passes
are gone, missed time must be made up after class.
The first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes of class are dead periods. You may not ask to use the
restroom during these dead periods.
Bathroom passes will stay at the front of the room. You must have my initials on your pass in order
to leave the room.
If you feel sick or there is an emergency, you may go to the commons area bathroom immediately.
Someone will be sent to check on you.

Textbook Policy
I will not distribute textbooks unless requested.
We will use the class set of textbooks when needed during class.
You may check out a book, but it must be signed out after school and signed back in before school
the following day.

Remediation

Remediation will be provided weekly during the first 25 minutes of class on Wednesdays. This is
time for teacher-lead remediation, peer tutoring, make-up work, and MSL review.
After school remediation will also be held every Tuesday from 3:10-4:10.
Any other remediation will need to be scheduled on an individual basis.

Homework / Class Work

All assigned class work is expected to be done in class. There is no time for sleeping, talking, etc.
Class work is assigned to prepare you for tests so you can be successful in this class.
By doing class work correctly, the need for extra credit assignments is eliminated. There will be no
extra credit assignments.
Most homework will be unfinished class work or study guides.

Tardies
I do enforce the tardy policy. Please be on time and in your seat when the bell rings.
If you are tardy, sign the tardy sheet at the front of the room. Your name will sent to the office and
detention will be given the next day.
If a teacher causes you to be tardy, please bring a note when you come in.

Attendance:
You are allowed to miss 8 days in this class this semester. Any absence over 8 will need to be made
up in the Learning Center after school.
Keep in mind that two unexcused tardies equals one absence.
This course does not have an EOC, but you will have a state mandated MSL (Measure of Student
Learning) at the end of the semester. Your MSL will be your final exam and you will NOT be able to
exempt it! The MSL counts as 20% of your final grade.

Make-Up Policy:
You are responsible for any work that you miss when you are absent. You must come on your time
to receive missed work or to schedule a time to make-up quizzes or tests. Make-up assignments
will not be discussed during class changes.
If you miss a test or quiz, you will be required to make it up within 5 days of your return to school. I
will designate Tuesdays for make-up work after school from 3:10-4:10. If this does not fit with your
schedule, you will be expected to make up your missed test or quiz during class, still within the 5
days. You have the option, but dont wait until the last minute to decide! If you choose to make up
the assignment during class, it will be your responsibility to catch up on missed material for that
days class. If you fail to take the missed test within 5 days of your return, it will result in a zero for
that test.
You will have 5 school days to make up missed homework or class work if youve been absent. If
the assignment is not turned in within 5 days of your return to school, it will result in a zero.
The sooner you can make-up your work, the easier it will be and the more prepared you will be for
the tests and/or quizzes.
*Note: If you are absent on the due date of an assignment, your work is due the next day you return
to class. You will not have 5 days to make up the assignment unless it was assigned the day you
were out!

Grading Policy:

Major Grades
=
60%

Minor Grades
=
30%

Homework/Class work
=

=

*Note: This grading scale has been defined by Davidson County Schools. Major grades will mainly
include tests. Minor grades will include quizzes and labs. I reserve the right to decide which
assignments qualify under each category. There must be at least 4 major grades and 10 minor
grades each quarter.

County-wide Grading Scale:

Parent/Student Contract:

Parents (guardians), please read the provided syllabus and sign below. Your child will get a
homework grade of 100 if it is turned in by Friday, August 29th. If it is not turned in, it will
be a zero. Please provide email addresses if at all possible. This is an easy way for me to
communicate weekly with parents about upcoming due dates for assignments. I will send
regular emails to let you know what is going on in class that week and when progress
reports and report cards go home to students. It is my goal to keep parents involved with
their childs education!
