OF MANAGEMENT MINORS

MINOR IN FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Screening Subjects
C+ - Fin 102 or Fin 103 or Fin 105

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 2.0

Required Subjects
1. Fin 124: Equity Investment Analysis
This subject focuses on Equity (stocks). It teaches you basic stock valuation
through fundamental and technical analysis. It uses the Equity Section (Book
5) of the CFA Program Level 1.

2. Fin 199: Special Topics In Finance
The subject focuses on Quantitative Methods and Portfolio Management.
Again, its focused on the CFA Program Books. Its basically like Finance 103
plus QMT 11.

3. Fin 129: Derivatives and Alternative Investments
This subject talks about the use of derivatives and alternative investments.
The main focus is CFA Program Book 6.

4. Fin 123: Fixed Income Analysis
It focuses on Fixed Income (Bonds, Gov Treasury, Etc). The main resource
material is CFA Program Book 5.

5. Acc 191: Financial Reporting and Analysis

**There are also other subjects that you can take in replacement of the subjects above.
(Fin121, Fin199.1) However, it is highly encouraged for you to take the suggested subjects,
because the replacement subjects are usually the same with other subject (ex. Fin121 and
Fin124).

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

Expect that youll be studying

like your sophomore self
again. Youll crunch numbers
and memorize a lot of
concepts and formulas like
theres no tomorrow. Also,
almost all of the subjects are
connected, so understanding
the concepts is important to
understand the other
subjects.

More or less, the goal of the

Financial Management
Course here today is that it
would prepare students for
the CFA Program Level 1.
More or less I think the minor
helped me for the exam.
However, the books they use
in the minor program are
outdated (2011).

I dont think you could really

apply the stuff you learn in
the real world (unless you
really go to the finance
industry when you work). I
think the only useful thing
you can learn is Fin 124, the
stock valuation course as it
teaches you how to valuate
stocks (and buying and selling
them).

If you liked your Finance

class, then you will more or
less like this minor. Some
classes will require long
exams only, while others will
require certain
projects/presentations/panel
defenses. The key to
surviving this minor is
studying. 90% of the time you
will be doing quantitative
work so you really cannot BS
your way out of them. The
concepts and formulas are
not very difficult to
comprehend as long as you
understand finance.

If you plan on taking the CFA

exam then this minor is the
perfect reviewer. When you
start studying on your own,
you will be familiar because
youve taken the subjects up
already. Moreover, if you
plan on having a career in
Finance, then this minor will
surely help because Ateneo
does not really have a
devoted, purely Finance
major. Lastly, some subjects
will force you to develop
market awareness and being
updated with current market
events - a habit which is very
nifty.

Very theoretical. I wouldnt

really expect much of a minor
since it can only teach us so
much with so few units, but
do not expect to learn how to
trade stocks, use trading
platforms, use technical
analysis tools, etc in this
minor. There will be very
little hands-on work; most
are just you studying your
book. You have to learn that
on your own using the
knowledge you have acquired
in this minor. There are also
very little choices in
professors; most subjects will
have only one dedicated
instructor.

You really have to like or at

least have some interest with
your Finance class. The minor
is like an expanded version of
your FIN102/103. It discusses

Usually, there are projects

involved per course. The
projects are often very
relevant to the subject
matter and it lets you apply

You will be solving most of

your time. Your learning will
usually depend on your
perseverance to study or with
the capability of your

the parts of FIN103 in a

greater detail. You will have a
course just about focusing on
stocks or just focusing on
bonds. You will be doing a lot
of quantitative work, so if you
are the kind of person who
loves quantitative over
qualitative, then this minor
will be great for you. Expect
more work of course. You are
not adding 5 more subjects
for nothing, but the concepts
are pretty straightforward.

the concepts that you have

learned in class. The whole
minor program is created to
prepare you for the CFA Level
1 examination.

professor to teach. Due to

the construction of SOM/CTC,
SOM has limited its classes,
so you dont really have a
choice with your professors.
There are still some skills that
you cant learn from the
minor. You cant expect to
have a very in-depth
knowledge of everything due
to the limited time to study
the entire course.

MINOR IN MARKETING

Screening Subjects
B - Mkt 101 or Mkt 102 or Mkt 103

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 3.0

Required Subjects
1. Mkt 111: Marketing Research
2. Mkt 121: Advertising Management OR
Mkt 122: Sales Management
3. Mkt 112: Brand Management

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

There will be a lot of projects.

This entails having to
conceptualize products,
campaigns, marketing
proposals, branding, etc. And
then youll have to present all
of that to the
class/prof/panel.

Not too book-oriented so not

much memorization (you
deal with relatively the same
concepts over again), will
challenge you to be creative
and resourceful

Time consuming, numerous

meetings with group mates
(get good group mates!), at
one point as seniors you may
get demotivated to work (aka
senioritis) but fight that!!

Id like to think theres some

variety in the electives you
have to take for this minor.
As it should be set up in the
first place, the minors
develop you into a more well-
rounded marketeer

For those who went on JTA

and took similar subjects as
the electives (this goes for all
minors, not just marketing),
some (usually just one
though) will be credited so
less classes to take

Despite the expected variety,

it can sometimes be
repetitive as all kinds of
marketing are governed
under an umbrella of terms,
lessons, etc. (4Ps, USP,
insights, etc.)

Sometimes (depending on
the prof), it would be set up
like a competition with other
groups in the class.

Competitive classes imitate

real world experiences so
prepping you for something
that you would soon be
dealing with is a good thing.

Can sometimes make/break

friendships, youll need a
good group to work with,
your grade would always be
made in comparison with
other groups.

MINOR IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Screening Subjects
B - Mkt 101 or Mkt 102 or Mkt 105 or L&S 10

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 3.0

Required Subjects
1. Mkt 171: International Business
2. L&S 142: Cross-Cultural Communications
3. L&S 170: Strategies in the Global Business Environment

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

The subjects will teach you

about doing trading, stocks
and foreign exchange. You
will also study different
cultures and how they do
business.

Expect to have a lot of group
work so it would be
advantageous for you if you
know a lot of people also
taking this minor or go in it
with a group.

Aside from the 3 required
subjects, you will have to
take 2 more electives under
this minor. You can ask for
the list of accredited subjects
for this minor from the SOM
office.

Tip: i would prefer not to take
all the required subjects of

I enjoyed it! The subjects in

this minor are interesting and
fun. I suggest for people to
take this minor.

The professors for the
required subjects are really
good. You will really learn a
lot about doing business in
the international setting. It
also gave me a clear overview
about doing stocks and
trading. We had multiple
simulations in class, which
really helped us understand
the lessons better.

There will be a lot of paper

work and research. Heavy on
case analysis and group
presentations.

The tests are mostly
memorization heavy.

this minor in one sem. Mix

them with the Minor
electives.
Expect to work.
IB is not as light as other say
it is, but its also not that
heavy.

Expect paper work. (though
not crazy naman and mostly
reflection papers). Youll also
know a thing or two about
import export.

Tip: Choose your electives for
this wisely. I particularly
enjoyed Doing business in
Japan and Doing business in
the Asian Context because
both professors taught well
and bait!

Expect LOTS of presentations
too, group works mostly.

I suggest to take IB :)

You really get to learn about
other cultures and how to it
is to do business abroad in a
broad scale.

More or less you get a flavor
of the things you need to
know if you really plan on
doing business abroad.

Fun and nice professors!

Not as light as people say it

is.

Quite a number of paperwork
and expect lots of group
works and presentations.

Choose your electives

carefully. If you want to
refine the focus of the minor,
the core subjects in
themselves give a general
approach to International
Business.
Theres more theory than
actual application--take a
class under Perlada, he gives
very insightful practices if
thats what you are looking
for.

The topics are somewhat

cohesive and you will be
exposed to a lot of different
topics, especially with
cultures.

Topics and requirements
somewhat overlap, so you
can use things for one class in
another.

For some strange reason, all

the professors in the program
like to ask for group
presentations...so make sure
you go into the course with
reliable friends/ potential
group mates.

MINOR IN STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Screening Subjects
B - L&S 10 or L&S 11 and L&S 100

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 3.0

Required Subjects
1. L&S 129: Work Practicum and Career Development
2. L&S 135: Strategic Human Capital Management
3. L&S 136: Strategic Human Resources Development

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

More of personal growth

because the focus on is one'
career development. it ties
well with Th141 in some way.

Very detailed; All aspects of

HR will be discussed

Helpful for career
development.

Regular Saturday classes

aside from Monday-Friday
work schedule

Theories and principles

learned in class can help
provide an HR perspective for
other classes.

Subject deals with few but

key practical aspects of the
HR profession

Focused on group and
organizational development
methods

Very practical and actionable.

Unlike the other minors, this
is probably one of the easiest
in terms of workload

Professors are very HR-
oriented (friendly and
accommodating)

Helps one have a better grasp

of the dynamics between
team and how to improve
business performance
through people.

The required subjects help
one become familiar with the
HR role (beneficial for those
interested in pursuing a

there was not really any
integration or actionable part

MINOR IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Screening Subjects
C+ - ITM 11 or ITM 14

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 2.5

Required Subjects
1. ITM 100: IT Fundamentals

2. ITM 110: Information Engineering

3. ITM 189: Seminar of Information Technology Trends

4. ITM 124: Information Technology and Business Strategy

MINOR IN DECISION SCIENCE

Screening Subjects
C+ - QMT 11/12 or QMT 109 or POM 104

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 2.5
Like all other SOM minors, no subjects taken for the Minor should be below C

Required Subjects
1. Dec 100: Decision Analysis
This subject focuses on how one can make better decisions by breaking down
the elements an essentials of the decision to be made in-relation to
circumstances present.
Hopefully you get Sir Bong as your Prof.

2. QMT 120: Basic Principles of Operations Research (non-ME major)
This subject is a crash course on Operations Research that would touch on
linear programming solving, networking models, and queuing systems.

3. Mkt 111: Marketing Research
This subject applies marketing in a more analytical sense by focusing more on
data gathering and analysis of a companys marketing strategy and improving
it.
A scientific approach to decision-making in marketing decisions. Topics
include cost and value of information, product testing, consumer files,
research design, sampling techniques, data-gathering techniques, creative
data interpretation, simulation, and implementation of actual research
findings. (MKT 111 syllabus 14-15 Lascano)

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

What people would usually

Definitely a lot of fun, you get Numbers-heavy. Requires
say about this minor is that
to apply what you learn in
critical thinking
its like a minor in ME.
other areas.
Theres a lot of numbers
involved, especially in QMT
120. There will also be lots of

group work (especially in the

required subjects). This minor
will give you lots of insight on
how to be a top-level
executive, focusing on how to
make the right decisions
given key situations.
Expect to scrutinize situations
analytically, like seriously
breaking down the elements
and determining how they
interact. Expect a lot of
computing and statistics,
especially with QMT 120,
MKT 111 and most of the
electives. If youre not ME,
itll be like a crash course into
being one.

Electives:
DEC 140 is quite interesting
as you get to see how
variables affect each other
and see how they would
affect our overall goal.

POM 150 - the only real
computation youd probably
doing is computing for
process sigma and the rest is
just fixing and determining
problems. Finding a social
enterprise to work with is
also difficult.

You learn how to deconstruct

situations and become more
analytical about decision-
making forming criteria,
formulating and evaluating
solutions or alternatives.

You learn to become more
objective-based

The title of Minor in Decision
Science is quite unique and
sounds kinda cool. LOL.

With Decision Science you

can either go for the
quantitative or qualitative

To quote POM 150, you learn Mentioned already, know

to think an inch wide but a
your math and review your
mile deep
QMT 11 topics.

You must like numbers and

be comfortable with
statistical methods and tools.

Electives can become quite
heavy, especially when taken
in the 2nd semester where
time will be shortened.

DEC 140 may seem fun at
first, but simultaneous
projects make this elective a
heavy load.

aspect of how people make

decisions. The required
electives have a particular
emphasis towards quant
(because its under QMIT),
but dont let that scare you.
Decision Science at its core
isnt designed to me mini
ME but really how to
evaluate problems rationally
and to understand how and
why people judge, choose,
and decide the way they do.

DEC 100, MKT 111, and QMT
120 can be pretty tough for
those who arent stellar with
numbers, but its not
impossible. Especially in this
field, all of the numbers have
to make sense (lagot ka kung
hindi haha). Like me, youll
get the hang of it!

DEC 140 and POM 150 are
two quantitative courses that
stretch the limits of your
attention to detail. Every
detail must have a value and
each value must be
rationalized and verifiable.

I wasnt able to take the
more qualitative courses like
Philo of Logic or Creative
Problem Solving, but I heard
they really push you to think
more logically and more
rationally.

Outside of school, what you
learn is immensely practical
(DecSci is essentially problem
solving)

Expect your problem solving
and abstract reasoning skills
to increase exponentially

For me, personally, I received
job offers related to my
electives (Decision Support
Systems, OR, and advanced
stat w/c you learn in the
minor is a highly popular
complement to data analytics
outside of programming). Not
many people can consider
themselves Decision
Scientists so bank on your
unique expertise!

Decision Science and
Organizational Decision
Making is a relatively new
field (compared to others)
and the scholarly work brings
together everything from
behavioral economics,
neuroscience, marketing,
operations research,
leadership, and philosophy.
So youll learn to find an area
youll love.

Making the right decisions
and the right choices is too
important in life to pass up,

You wont always have
software to help you so
polish your mental math and
how to work a calcu.

Dont expect Easy As (ever).

Your profs will be the most
organized, detail-oriented,
and efficient people in
JGSOM so come prepared.

If you havent gotten it yet,
this minor isnt for those who
are chill. Group projects with
client companies are legit and
you need to budget your time
to gather lots of data.

Be very wary of the electives
you take in 2nd sem.

so though challenging, this

minor is definitely worth it.

Decision Science, teaches you

how to scientifically make
decisions, they have models
and things that you did not
know existed because you
think you can do it using
common sense but they have
structures and models for it,
it makes your decision-
making a lot more logical and
systematic

Required
DEC100 was a lot of help
really, thats the meat of the
minor, QMT120 is intro to ME
majors haha! it is interesting
and you might need this in
work, MKT111 is like stat all
over again, it gets you
exposed to the market
research industry

Electives
ITM122 easy high grade, chill
gaming kasi e, but you get to
apply what youve learned
from your subjects
POM150 hassle pero worth it,
a semesters worth of
process improvement.

Very scientific, systematic, if

youre in to math take it

Applicable to any job type,
even if you want to be an
entrepreneur or a corporate
employee, both are
applicable, actually any job
talaga

Nice, worth learning, very
applicable to life

You can you use this to
decide what to wear or
where to go

There is a science to
everything.

Hassle POM 150, lots of work

to be done

If you really want to learn,
dont take ITM122 as an
elective, sayang.

Beware!
If you dont like following
systems and models, dont
take this minor.
If you dont like thinking
about everything you do,
dont take this minor.
If you are a spontaneous
person, dont take this minor.
If you like gutfeel, dont take
this minor.
If you feel, and dont think,
dont take this minor.
If you identify yourself with
any of the traits above, dont
take this minor because it will
go against your personality
and nature.

However, if you think that
this minor will help you
balance your personality,
then go for it!

MINOR IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Screening Subjects
C+ - QMT 11/12 or QMT 109 or POM 104

Retention Grade
Maintain a Minimum Average of 2.5

Required Subjects
1. POM 199.2: Project Management Fundamentals
2. POM 199.3: Project Management Tools and Techniques
3. POM 199.4: Managing Project Teams
4. POM 199.5: Strategic Project Management

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

A lot of group projects. The

requirements are much
similar to operations
management.

POM 199.2: gives you a run
through of all the concepts in
project management. The
principles here are much
valued, as it can be applied in
most aspects of work.

POM 199.3: One is required
to propose a comprehensive
project plan (usually start up
business, it system,
organizational changes, etc).
This is done both individually
and as a group.

POM 199.4: Very interesting!
This class covers the concept
of communication,

Very few competitions, since

only limited number of
colleges offer this minor.

The core principles are highly
useful when it comes to work
and/or organizational
activities.

Not as enlightening. Some

people get this just to have a
minor in something.

The group projects for POM
199.2, 199.3 and 199.5 have
an intense weight on your
final grade.

personality types, conflict

management, leadership
style, motivation, power,
persuasion and more. The
topics may seem very simple
however it is highly
necessary.

POM 199.5: I just learned one
thing: Design Monitoring
Framework. The whole class
revolved around this specific
tool which is used in
comparability with the
balanced scorecard.
Group works! Almost all of
the outputs from the
required subjects involve
group works. Most of the
subjects depend on the major
projects per group.

First two subjects (POM
199.2 and POM 199.3) are
similar to operations
management. Theres a little
computation involved and
students are also taught a
little of finance in excel (how
to do cost-benefit analysis,
compute NPV, IRR etc. using
excel and not formulas).
Lessons in the first two
subjects are similar to what
people do in orgs (create
gantt charts/timeline for an
event or project, create
budget plan, plan out details

If you are interested in events

management/planning and
project/events side in
marketing, then taking a
minor in project management
will be useful for you!

It helps you to know specific
tools or frameworks that you
can use in planning and
organizing a project as well as
handling project teams.

It is a holistic approach as it
concerns marketing, opman,
and even a little of finance.

Not that specialized as

compared to other minors.

It is essential that you are a
team worker since group
works make up a bulk of this
minor

for the event or project

execution, etc.)

2nd half of subjects (POM
199.4 and POM 199.5) are
projects-based. POM 199.4
tackles more on your own
personality and how you
work with a group. POM
199.5 is more on how a
particular project can make
an impact in a bigger picture
using frameworks.

MINOR IN ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (SOMBA)

Screening Subjects
C+ - Mkt 199 C or D

Retention Grade
Average of at least 2.5 on 1st and 2nd Semesters is required to achieve Minor

Required Subjects
1. Mkt 199 C & D: Special Topics in Marketing
2. Mkt 199 F & G
3. Mkt 199 I & J: Special Topics in Mkt: Start-up

*OR Mkt 199 D for special cases to be determined by the Director

What to Expect

Pros

Cons

Unlike other minors, SOMBA

is not just a bunch of subjects
integrated into a program;
its actually a lifestyle you will
have to sustain for the rest of
the year and hopefully for the
rest of your life. Being a
business owner will require
you to go beyond being a
student and it will push you
to work for something more
than just grades.

Putting up a business that is
open to the outside world
makes SOMBA unique from
putting up a stall in JSEC.
Although both require a lot of
time and effort, you will most
likely encounter more people
from different socio-
economic backgrounds
through SOMBA.

Undoubtedly one of the most

realistic if not the most
realistic business minor you
can do in college.
Will teach you through real
life experiences rather than
through the classroom.

You get to earn money if you
do well

You have something to fall on
if you dont want to go
corporate just yet, or at all
for that matter

The only minor where you
dont necessarily have to
attend an extra 6 hours of
lecture every sem. Most
likely, you will attend one 1.5
hour talk every week, and
one 1.5 hour consultation

Time consuming if youre

really dedicated to your
business. You might have to
wake up early every morning
if youre business model is a
stall or something similar.

Lots of reflection papers,
financial statements, and at
least one long paper every
sem. But trust me you get
used to it.

You could potentially lose
money

You might lose friends
especially if you dont agree
on your business strategy

You will end up having to
choose between your
business and school work

Attending lectures, seminars,
talks, as well as doing papers,
financial reports, business
model canvas, and panel
presentation probably
account for 80% of your
grade, but is actually just 20%
of the total effort you need
to put into SOMBA. The
remaining 80% is the actual
implementation of the
theories you learn and
integrating it to your
business. Therefore, you
must be willing to accept the
fact that most of the
hardwork you put into your
business might not directly
translate into your grades.

Expect to lose some money.
Not all groups are able to
earn back their capital.

Expect to have fun and have
the most fulfilling experience
in your college life, but only if
you are willing to work hard
for it.

Basically SOMBA is an
opportunity given to students
to set up their own business,
with the help of professors
who serve as their mentors. It
is a business incubator that
helps students to grow and
mature their business before

every other week.

You will definitely feel you
are learning something that
could benefit you for the rest
of your life, even if youre not
doing so well.

several times throughout the

year. SOMBA could definitely
be a game changer if youre
running for honors as it could
give you an extra 2 As or it
could also give you 2 extra
Ds.

letting it out to experience

the outside world.
Expect very flexible schedules
because there will only be
one 1.5-3-hour regular
session per week which will
be for plenary.

Depending on your mentor,
you will meet with them once
a week for an hour of
consultation to help you build
your business model.

It is marketing heavy but it
allows you to get creative
with your ideas.

It is a legitimate business that
the SOMBA program helps to
incubate -complete with
government documents and
the like.

You will be graded based on
your business concept
(product/service), your
acquisition of permits, your
marketing strategies, and
most especially your
financials. But the most
important thing is the
potential for growth for the
business.

Its a good learning

experience because youre
immersed in the actual steps
in starting up your own
business and its basically
application of learnings from
the get go.

You get to meet experts
through the plenary sessions
who are inspiring as well as
insightful.

You have the entire year
(including summer) to
develop and build your
business versus just one
semester (LS127)

Your thesis serves as your
minor as well - if youre a part
of SOMBA, you will only have
to take the MKT199 subjects
and they will be credited as
both your SOM electives and
thesis subjects (LS126/127)

You could lose a lot of money

from investments and other
expenses.

The grading for sales is by
rank. So if you dont really
earn much, you wont get a
high grade.

The success of your business
is highly dependent on your
chemistry as a group. You
need to be able to distribute
the workload evenly because
otherwise, even your
presentations could fail (and
youre together for an entire
year!)

There are some mentors in
the SOMBA team who are
not as good as the others so
it really depends on how well
you do on your own as a
group and as a company and
how bad you want to succeed
because sometimes the
mentors dont really help and
youre going to have to do
things on your own.
