Everything About Water

5 Basic Problems to Solve
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Where to get it?

How to transport it?
How to store it?
How to purify it?
How to dispense it?

1. Where to get it?

A
Out of the sky (rain)
B
Above ground source (lakes, rivers or tanks)
C
Under ground source (wells, windmill, generators, hand pumps)
2. How to transport it?
A
Water Buffalo (tanker truck, tank on trailer or truck)
B
55 gallon drums or 30 gallon drums (blue plastic, food quality)
C
3, 5 or 6 gallon water cans with spigots
D
5 gallon buckets with lids
E
Any other container that will hold water
3. How to store it?
A
Under ground tanks or cisterns
B
Above ground water tanks (cheapest and easiest)
C
Water barrels
D
5 gallon buckets with lids (clean, food grade)
E
Water bladders for tubs in your house
F
Water beds
4.

How to purify it?

A
Start by filtering it (get out bulky debris, funnels and coffee filters)
B
Boil it, if you have a large pot and lots of fuel (stainless stockpot)
C
Water purification filters, hand pumps, Burkee, or PUR, filter straws, water bottle
purifiers, water can purifiers, Life Straw
D
SOLIS technique (2 liter soda bottle)
E
Solar oven pasteurization technique
F
Water purification pills or drops, iodine, bleach*, powdered chlorine
G
Improvised water filters (sand, charcoal and gravel in canvas bags or pant legs)
H
Powdered drink mixes to help with taste (Gatorade or any electrolyte mix,
pedialyte for children, if available)
I
Long term storage chemicals

J
K
L

Distillation
Desalination (not for desert dwellers)
Radiation water must sit 72 hours

5. Dispensation
A
Water pumps, electric or hand. Keep pumps clean with diluted bleach
B
Gravity feed
C
Syphon hose
D
Water hose (white RV type) Keep hoses and tubings clean with diluted bleach.
E
Water cans with spigot.

USE ONLY UNSCENTED BLEACH

Different types of contaminants

Particulates suspended contaminant
Microbiological living organisms
Inorganic contaminants arsenic and flouride
Radioactive metals uranium and radium
Organic contaminants solvents and pesticides

What type of contaminant is most dangerous? - microbiological

Example:

Cholera (aerolineas argentinias) is #1 killer in third world countries

Goal #1
Goal #2

Protection against all microbiologicals

All other contaminants

Red Cross recommendations: Boiling, chlorination, distillation

Boiling (kills microbiological, does not remove)
Chlorination ** (kills microbiological, does not remove)
Distillation (kills and removes microbiological)
** Chlorination filter first
