Section B - Community Needs

(1) Describe the benefiting community including its location using any relevant geographic
and demographic information.If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A"
Itabaiana is a town with 86,000 inhabitants located in the state of Sergipe,
northeastern Brazil, considered the second poorest region in the country. Population over
60 years old constitute 18% of the inhabitants and the city offers only a few occupational
activities for the elderly. A key ingredient to healthy aging is regular physical activity. The
risk of many diseases and health problems there are common in old ages decreases when
a city has a good infrastructure for physical activities and encourages the participation of
the elderly.
The Rotary Club of Itabaiana, through this project, proposes the installation of 02 gym
centers for the elderly in the city. Each gym consists of 10 exercise devices suitable for
elderly, which will be installed outdoors, in public squares and/or parks.
(2) What community needs have been identified? If the activity is a scholarship, enter
"N/A"
Based on a research done by the Rotary Club of Itabaiana, rotarians have identified
the following needs, as for the elderly:
- The lack of occupational practices related to physical activities;
- The low level of integration and socialization;
- The need for redeeming public places such as squares and parks providing better living
for citizens;
