Highlighting Form
Scanning is reading a text quickly in order to find specific information,
e.g. figures or names. It can be contrasted with skimming, which is reading
quickly to get a general idea of meaning.
Skimming is useful when you want to survey a text to get a general
idea of what it is about. In skimming you ignore the details and look for the

main ideas. Main ideas are usually found in the first sentences of each
paragraph and in the first and last paragraphs. It is also useful to pay
attention to the organisation of the text.
Extensive reading is reading as much as possible, for your own
pleasure, at a difficulty level at which you can read smoothly and quickly
without looking up words or translating to English as you go.
Intensive reading involves learners reading in detail with specific
learning aims and tasks. It can be compared with extensive reading, which
involves learners reading texts for enjoyment and to develop general reading
skills. The learners read a short text and put events from it into chronological
order.
