Hot-Desking
By Sumayyah Bailey

+ Today, I completed a hot-desking task. Hot-desking is

receiving feedback from your peers, on the good and bad

points in your work. My peers were given examples of my work
to critique.

+ Do the layouts of the front cover, contents page and

DPS follow conventions of a pop magazine?

They suit the genre very well

They are generic and will be knowledgeable to

the audience

They are laid out in a very simple, conventional

way, which would be easy for the readers to
follow.
They are simplistic, clear and organised
The pose in the picture is a good representation
of the pop genre

It is effective that my layouts follow conventions, this

will help my audience identify the genre of the text
and compel them to consume it. Following
conventions is also effective as it makes the text easy
to understand. This is an example of transparency in
the utopian theory, which explains that an audience
consumes a text because it is easy to understand.

+ Is the star constructed in the way you would expect a

pop star to be represented?

The pose and costume represent a pop star look

Yes, however you should choose images that are

not so similar for each page to show variety

There is not musical instrument or mic

The images are good, but too similar, perhaps use

another model or change the background

It is important that my star is constructed to set up a

positive representation to the audience. This
representation can be identifiable to the audience
and compel them to consume the text. Following
conventions, when it comes to representation and the
star, helps the audience to identify the genre and
appeals to them. Some representations are
polysemic, so the audience reads it indifferent ways,
this targets a wider audience. This is an example of a
psychographic audience

+ What attracts you to the magazine the most?

The layout looks like it could work well

The front cover as the layout looks like it can contain aesthetically pleasing
content

The layout of the contents page is very nice and I think it would look good
once completed

The image because it is large

The simplistic style

From the feedback, I can see that the layout is

dominant in attracting the audience. This is
effective as I will follow pop genre conventions
to appeal to my target audience and compel
them to consume the text. My peers were also
pleased my the image. This is important, as I
want to set up a positive representation to the
audience and allow the opinion leader (star)
to compel the audience to consume the text.

+ Do you think the use of colour contributed to the

representation of the star and how?

I think the colours pink and purple represent pop well

So far it looks good however you will need to see how the colour will
compare/contrast to the images and backgrounds chosen

I think the colours youve chosen represent the genre very well, however, I
would say that you might need to think about how youre tying the colours in
with the images youre using. This will make the magazine more visually
pleasing and easier to look at.

I think that pink and purple does represent pop well

Yes especially the colour pink because it represents pop well.

The colour scheme I have chosen have connotation of feminism and festivity.
This is ideal to the time of year the text is set to publish and communicates a
mixture of emotion to the audience, which is effective as the text is aimed at
teenagers, who experience a lot of emotion during adolescence. The colour
scheme also helps the audience identify the genre of the text, so I will include
colours that appeal to my target audience.
