it es das Automobil gibt, ist es sichtbarer Ausdruck der technischen
eistungsfahigkeit seines Zeitalters gewesen.

ver since the car first existed, it has been the visible expression of the
technological horizons of its time. But it wasn't long before it came to
mean much more than just that. Before it had even outgrown its
technical infancy, it had also become a reflection of the spirit of its age.
From the elegance of the thirties, through the utilitarian, mass motoring
approach of the sixties, right up to the present day, marked by a
previously unparalleled sense of individuality. Today's driver can choose
from a wider range of models and equipment than was possible even in
the earliest heydays of the hand-built, made-to-measure car. So today,
more than ever before, your choice of car is a very personal as well as a
carefully considered decision.
The first consideration is invariably the technical standard a car is
able to offer. But after that, its character and personality become
decisive factors for many people. Some of us prefer a car that offers
maximum relief from the "tedious chore" of driving. Whilst others see
driving as a positive and active pleasure that opens up new opportunities, new dimensions.
BMW's position is completely unequivocal. BMW does not build
passive cars. And never will. This attitude, which has been a cornerstone of the company's philosophy from the very beginning, is now
more relevant than ever. Because our times demand dynamism and
vitality from those who shape our society. They demand new, farsighted
solutions and spontaneous reactions. All of them attributes which could
quite easily be used to describe a BMW.

the worst of the elements by an ingenious water channelling and windflow system .. .safety. However, at th is
point we should stop. Because it's
not just the styling itself that we
should consider, but the innovations
that lie within and beneath it.
It only takes a glance to realise
howmanyendlesshourshave been
spent in unusually rigorous wind tunnel testing.
Indeed, the new 7 Series cars
are living proof of how the wind tunnel can in fact come up with an
elegant answer, provided you ask the
right questions.
However, it has never been our
policy to chase spectacular low drag
coefficient records for their own sake,
especially if this means making
massive compromises in the practicality and safety of everyday
motoring.
For instance, sacrificing rain
channels in the name of reduced
duce lift which in turn leads to noticeably better directional stability at fast
motorway speeds and in long bends.
A word or two about the front
section is also worthwhile.
In engineeringterms, we've given
ita negative rake. Which means it
leans slightly forwards. Contrary to
popular belief, this has no negative
effect on the car's drag coefficient.
But it does significantly improve the
airflow to the cooling system.
The result of all these measures is
that, with a drag coefficient of less
than 0.32, the new 7 Series are
among the sleekest cars in their
class.
The safety of a car starts with the
rigidity of the bodyshell. This is absolutely vita I in preserving the survival area of the passenger cell in the
event of a coll ision.
In addition to conventional
measures, such as am ply proportioned pillars and supports in all door

What goes for the concept
behind the new 7 Series also applies
to the car's production: new
thinking.
Combining several body sections
into one large pressing greatly increases production accuracy. (We've
reduced the number of individual
parts by 18o/o). This has then allowed
us fo reduce the number of spot and
seam welds (down by 30%). And
this in turn considerably reduces the
risk of corrosion.
Eliminating potential problem
areas, zinc-plating exposed parts,
designing smooth body panels
without any corners that can act as
moisture traps. That's the kind of attention to detail that makes for
long-lasting quality.

A car's handling is also determined by the load on both the front and
rear axles.
Capitalising on a lengthened
wheelbase, we have, amongst many
other things, made the gearbox
4.8o/o lighter to save weight at the
front. To increase weight over the rear
axle, on the other hand, we've moved the battery to beneath the rear
passenger seat and relocated the
fuel pump in the tank itself.
The numerous adjustments have
resulted in something approaching a
small sensation: distinctly higher
unladen weight on the rear axle. And,
as a result, an axle load ratio of 49%
at the front near the engine and 51%
over the rear axle.
It's a step that on the surface
may seem small, but it's one with farreaching effects. Handling behaviour
in winter is now noticeably improved
and so is acceleration on slippery
surfaces. Equally, the car's reactions
are virtually unaffected by changes in
SUSPENSION
On the one hand, there's the 5speed manual gearbox, distinguished by its short stick travel and
precise, positive shift. For active driving with a genuine sense of
pleasure. As well as a liveliness
where you're in complete control.
On the other hand, the 4-speed
automatic transmission (optional) is
by no means a poor relation. Featuring EH electronic/hydraulic control,
it lets you choose whether you want
the emphasis on economical motoring or whether you're in the mood
for something a little sportier.
And you can also enjoy individual
gear selection if you opt for this

ports that are inherently subject to
less vibration.
If you're now really getting into
the swing of things, you probably
won't take too kindly to having to
pull up suddenly. Unfortunately,
that's how it is sometimes.
And that's exactly when the new
7 Series disc brakes come into their
own. Brakes that are purpose-
matched to deal with the new performance: fist calliper disc brakes
fore and aft, with bigger brake cylinders and thicker discs made from
new heat-resistant materials and
with asbestos-free pads.
Added to that, the standard
ABS anti-lock braking system
features an improved, dashmounted warning light.
It's good to know that the braking system on the new 7 Series has
a reassuringly powerful braking effect. Especially at those moments
when there is no alternative but to
stop right in your tracks.

The ultimate
driving
machine
f '
he BMW 735i redefines the concept of luxury motoring. It presents a benchmark against which the automobile industry will gauge
its progress well into the next century.
This remarkable automobile is, in every aspect of performance, comfort
and reliability, the most advanced BMW - if not the most advanced passenger car- ever built. Although many of its features have no precedent
on road-going vehicles, it disdains to be called "revolutionary".
The 735i steadfastly maintains the outstanding hereditary trait of its
BMW ancestors. A tactile fusing of driver to machine to road. As with
every BMW that preceded it, the 735i is the product of a heritage unduplicated by any other car company. For six decades, BMW's sole priority has been the creation of a unique breed of automobile. Cars conceived to achieve a single-minded purpose: the perpetuation of sheer
joy of driving.
For BMW maintains an overview contrary to that of less impassioned carmakers. The person who has attained the station at which he ,
can afford commensurate comforts need not surrender the pleasures of
participation. The BMW owner does not ride. He drives. And with the
BMW 735i, as you shall discover, that drive renders obsolete all previous
definitions of the term.

the underlying concept of the engines with six cylinders in-line. A concept
which, from the very beginning, leaves very little room for vibrations.
The other feature is the crankshaft with 12 counterweights running in

to the 7 Series' astounding smoothness and refinement.
Whenever people set out to test, compare and judge an engine developed by

describe this level of technology in matter-of-fact, dispassionate language.

Even asudden change in engine load -for example if you have to take

Anyone seeking to become the leader in terms of driving safety must
suffer the slightest damage. Naturally, this also means lower repair
neers have done, making do with nothing but the highest standard of tech-
nology with maximum benefits for the driver and passengers. Our objective
was not to build a car simply with large dimensions, but rather an automobile
with a superior all-round safety concept able to efficiently absorb impact
energy at both ends. The passenger cell, on the other hand, is extremely
rigid and secure, offering all the car's occupants a pleasant feeling of safety.
Let's start with the crumple zones. Featuring hydraulic impact absorbers at the front and at the rear, the regenerating bumpers withstand minor

Through the sheer size of its interior, the BMW 7 Series gives you the
freedom of movement appropriate for a car of this calibre. The long wheelbase, wide track and the length of the car provide ideal conditions forth is ex.

Another impressive factor is the extremely low noise level of the BMW
7 Series. Indeed, this proves that we were right in seeking to avoid the

generation of noise to begin with. The six-cylinder power unit, smooth and
quiet from the outset thanks to its inherent design principle, is further
dampened by special engine mounts. The gearshift lever is fitted separately
to avoid the transmission of noise and vibrations. The front axle and final
drive are suspended in dual elastic mounts for supreme smoothness. All
doors and windows are elaborately sealed, the doors alone featuring no less
than three rubber seals all round. The result - serene silence.
A further asset contributing to the 7 Series' unique driving comfort is
the electronically controlled heating and ventilation system with individual
adjustment by the driver and front passenger. All you do is choose your personal temperature which will then be kept constant as long as you desire. Or
you switch on the large, infinitely variable radial blower to provide a quiet and
perfectly distributed flow of air.

If you wish the air drawn in from outside can even be filtered by a

There are still many more features that deserve your attention.
Features which benefit the safety of
all occupants riding in a BMW 7 Series: The ergonomic belt system at the
rear with inverted belt geometry to prevent the passengers from sliding over
checked time and again in countless tests to satisfy all your demands.
On the rear seats of
the BMW 7 Series
we have made a
radical change exclusive to BMW: We
have reversed the
geometrical arrangement of the
seat belts. Now the

knobs.
From the 735i SE a remotely controlled BMW anti-theft system is fitted
as standard, ensuring maximum protection of your car against unwanted intruders. The system is a cost option on all other BMW 7 Series.
To enhance your driving safety even further we have invented the
BMW crash sensor, a system which determines impacts and automatically
opens all door locks to give helpers easy access from outside.
Such intelligent solutions obviously call for a comparable standard of
quality in the interior. All materials are finished to the highest standards of
craftsmanship, fitting perfectly down to the smallest seam. Leather upholstery is fitted as standard to 730i SE, 735i SE and 735il models and Buffalo
leather is optional from 735i. These and other interior fitments make sure
that in the BMW 7 Series you not only feel at home, but also fit and alert even
seat belts for height, automatically moving the belts to the right level once
you change the position of the seats. Moreover, the convenience of electric
seat adjustment is supplied on 730i SE, 735i, 735i SE and 735il as part of
the standard specification.
The result of all this refinement is perfect seating conditions all round.

chauffeur and enjoy the facility of an even more spacious working environment, we also have the 735il. The most outstanding feature of this model is
the longer wheelbase with an extra 4 1/2 inches providing more than ample
legroom in the rear - a luxury you'll appreciate in numerous different ways.

Building a 12-cylinder is certainly every engineer's dream. And driving a 12-cylinder is also a dream for motorists everywhere. Because the
20

long intake manifolds are housed within very compact dimensions, flow loss
is reduced to a minimum and efficiency increased to a maximum.
The age of new power units which started with the BMW 12-cylinder
now goes two steps further.
First, there's BMW's unique new 8-cylinder in the engine range up
to three litres (160 kW (218 bhp}, 0-100 km/h [62 mph] in 9.3 seconds).
Second, BMW now also offers the most powerful 8-cylinder in the
range up to four litres (210 kW (286 bhp}, 0-100 km/h [62 mph] in 7.4 seconds).

into the connecting rod in
its final shape. The cover
and rod are then broken
apart deliberately at a
specific point, the fracture

individually for each cylinder, DME determines the optimum injection vol-
ume and exact injection timing. The result of this ultra-precise control is not
only greater efficiency, but also extra power and better response to the ac-
celerator.

Simply the best: DME. The Digital Motor Electronic engine manage-
ment system used in the new BMW 8-cylinder benefits from our latest ideas
sions from BMW's 8-cylinder power units flow from the cylinder head to
the catalytic converter in double-wall pipes. In between the inner and
outer wall, we use the best insulating material in the world: air. This superior insulating effect and the
fact that the inner tube is only
1 mm thick allows the catalytic
converter to warm up quickly to
its most efficient operating temperature. And even with the double wall this new exhaust system still weighs 4 kg (9 lb) less than a conventional exhaust.

Every BMW consists of a great many parts and components - and each individual item is the result of years of research and development before it is ready for production. The
often quite astounding technology that has gone into such parts
and components is then reduced to just one simple technical
term or abbreviation. Since it would be a pity if this simplified
terminology created any lack of clarity or misunderstandings, we
would like to take this opportunity to explain a number of essential features, some of which are optional, others fitted as standard.

Check / Control
Check/Control supervises the proper function of all major
features and bulbs on the car and shows the driver their condition or, respectively, any deviation from their proper operation.
An important innovation is that Check/Control also monitors and
displays major lamp functions when not in use (off). Defect infor
mation is displayed in alphanumeric characters by means of a
dot matrix, and is accompanied by a sound signal. The information provided in this way is subdivided into three priority levels
depending on its significance.
ATC
'V
'V
'V
The four-speed automatic transmission of the 750i/il features Adaptive Transmission Control (ATC). In addition to the advantages of the EH automatic transmission already mentioned,
this system adjusts the choice of gears to the driver's personal
style of motoring and even takes environmental conditions and
driving situations into account. To identify the driver's personal
style of motoring, ATC analyses the position and movement of
the accelerator pedal as well as the road speed of the car. The instant the control system notices that the driver is driving in a
very dynamic style, it will automatically activate the high-performance transmission program, while a particularly reserved
style of driving will activate the maximum-economy program. On
snowbound or icy roads, the control system will automatically ac
tivate the winter program for greater traction and driving stability. In particular driving situations, such as fast motoring on
winding roads, long downhill stretches or stop-and-go traffic,
ATC will again modify its gearshift strategy accordingly. Adaptive
Transmission Control avoids any excessive frequency of gearshifts, reduces fuel consumption, and enhances both driving
safety and ease of control.

Auxiliary ventilation serves to supply fresh air into the passenger compartment on hot days, therefore avoiding excessive
temperatures.
The anti-submarining support at the front of the seat prevents the submarining effect (the occupant sliding forwards be
neath his belt) in the event of an accident. The seats therefore
offer maximum safety, exceeding statutory stability requirements
many times.

the courtesy lights and hazard warning flashers. It also unlocks
the central locking, allowing the doors to be opened easily from
outside.

This open space is filled with air treated by drying agent embedded in the glue round the sides of the window. Double glazing

lamps operates in principle in the same way as a slide projector.
The only difference is that in this case the slide is replaced by a
diaphragm giving the light beam exactly the right contours re
quired for optimum illumination of the road ahead. The head
light beam is therefore "projected" on to the road, as it were,
while the high beam remains unchanged. The advantages of this
system are obvious: Better illumination of the road ahead, better
illumination to the side, less dazzling of the driver himself partic
ularly in fog, better detection of pedestrians, cyclists, signposts
and road markings.

With the ergonomic seat belt system at the rear, the seat
belt latches are at the outside of the seats, and not in the middle, as is usually the case. The first advantage is that this allows
convenient single-handed use of the seat belts without having to
grope around, thus making passengers more willing to buckle up
in the first place. Two further benefits are that it is easier to
fasten the belts for children in their special seats and that none
of the passengers can sit in front of the belt latch. The most important advantage, however, is the extra safety offered by this
concept: Coming out of the rear parcel shelf at right angles, the
seat belt offers (adult) passengers of virtually all sizes ideal belt
geometry. Body restraint is improved by the better geometry of
the hip belt and the risk of injury is reduced. The same kind of
optimum protection is also offered in side-on collisions, where
the belts hold back passengers moving Iowa rds the middle of
the car and prevent head contact. Yet a further advantage is that
helpers have better access to the belts for opening them after an
accident.

When the 750il was first conceived, BMW engineers were given
both an opportunity and a challenge: create the finest luxury sedan in
the world. And power it with a silky-smooth 12-cylinder engine that could
produce effortless power on command. One whose innovations would

the technological advances developed in BMW's racing engines, maximum performance is now converted to everyday driving. The new 4-liter
engine of the 740i/il develops 282 hp at 5800 rpm and 295 lb/ft at
4500 rpm. This translates to 0-60 mph in 7.1
seconds and a test track top speed of

55 lbs. Four lightweight valves, controlled by
two overhead camshafts, supply each of the
V-arranged cylinders. Cylinder head covers
are made of high-tech magnesium instead of
aluminum, saving another 11 lbs.
Recyclable plastic improves torque. The intake system is inte-
grated in the 90-V-section between the rows of cylinders. Made of injection-cast plastic, it reduces resistance to airflow, keeps intake air cool,
increasing efficiency, and weighs 2/3 less than aluminum.

TECHNOLOGY GUIDE.
the glue around the sides of the window. Double glazing (with
an overall thickness of 9 mm) gives the windows a much
better insulating effect against extreme temperatures and
noise, and prevents the windows from misting over.
Energy Control
At speeds over 5 mph, Energy Control keeps the driver
informed of the car's current fuel consumption, to help save
fuel and resources. The analog-face display is integrated in
the tachometer.
Check/Control
Check/Control supervises the proper function of all
major features and bulbs on the car and shows the driver
their condition or any deviation from their proper operation.
An important innovation is that Check/Control also monitors
and displays major lamp functions when not in use (off).
Defect information is displayed in alphanumeric characters
and is accompanied by a sound signal. This information is
subdivided into priority levels depending on its significance.
Knock control
By varying the ignition timing, knock control prevents
engine knocking and possible damage to the engine. This
allows an increase in the compression ratio without the risk
of damage. As a result, the engine is able to make optimum
use of the fuel.
Microprocessor
A microprocessor receives input signals from the starter,
tachometer, odometer and an engine-temperature sender.
When the car is running, it processes this information continuously, calculating the mileage when maintenance will be
required. The driver sees a row of light-emission diodes (LED)
plus "Oil Service" and "Inspection" lights. If the car is new or
freshly serviced, all green LEDs light briefly when the ignition
is switched on, to indicate that service is not yet needed. As
time for service approaches, fewer green LEDs light. When
service is due, the yellow LED and either the "Oil Service" or
"Inspection" light come on. Should the owner postpone maintenance, the red LEDs illuminate.
Limited-slip differential
The drive wheels of a car run at different speeds while
moving around a turn - the inner wheel covering a shorter
distance than the outer wheel. While a normal differential
compensates for this difference in speed and wheel travel, the
compensation effect may be negative in some cases. For
example, if one drive wheel is running on a slippery surface,
the differential will transmit the entire power of the engine to
that wheel alone. As a result of this excess power the wheel
will spin, while the other wheel, which still has a good grip on
the road, remains immobile. This effect can be reduced by a
limited-slip differential, where the clutch transfers up to 25 percent of the torque to the wheel with the better grip. Under normal circumstances, however, the compensating effect of the
differential remains unchanged.
On-board computer
The on-board computer offers the driver all the data
needed for comfortable and efficient driving, such as: date,
time of day, average speed, average fuel consumption, miles
left in the tank at present rate of use, distance to the point of
destination, speed limit and even the outside temperature. The
computer also functions as a timer. At the same time, the onboard computer increases safety since it is capable, for
instance, of alerting the driver to icy road conditions; it also
provides a coded anti-theft security lock. All the information
can easily be called up by remote control on one of the steering column stalks while driving, without moving the hands from
the steering wheel.
S e r vo tr onic
Servotronic is a very special kind of power steering, not
based on engine speed like a conventional system, but rather
on the speed at which the car is actually traveling. It gives
ample power assistance during parking maneuvers and at low
road speeds, and reduced assistance - with a better feeling
for steering - at high speeds. As a result, power assistance is
perfectly tailored to motoring requirements at all times.
Diagnostic system
The on-board diagnostic system is part of the Digital
Motor Electronics (OME Ill). Signals of malfunctions and even
related operating conditions are stored electronically, and
later shown and interpreted on the screen of the Service
Scope in the BMW Dealer's repair shop. This way the task of
failure analysis is made much easier, and repair costs are
reduced.
Digital Motor Electronics
BMW uses in its spark ignition engines the most
advanced form of engine management: the third generation
of Digital Motor Electronics (DME Ill). OME Ill monitors with
utmost precision engine control, parameters such as ignition,
timing, fuel injection and mixture control, as well as numerous
ancillary functions. It provides optimal power with the lowest
possible fuel consumption and emission levels under all operating conditions.
Four-valve technology
Incorporating two inlet and two outlet valves, four-valve
technology provides a better cylinder charge, substantially
improving engine output and torque throughout the entire
speed range.
Intermittent wiper
The intermittent wiper function varies the windshield
wiper operation intervals according to road speed. If desired,
the intermittent wiper function can be adjusted manually.
Double glazing
In the case of double glazing, two windows are bonded
to one another with a gap of 3 mm in between. This open
space is filled with air treated by a drying agent embedded in
40
Memory
The memory function for electrically adjusting the driver's
seat "remembers" three different seat positions and the
related positions of the headrest and rear-view mirrors, at the
touch of a button. This eliminates the need to spend a long
time searching for your desired position. Just press the button
once - clearly an advantage on cars regularly driven by different people (e.g., members of a family). The right outside
mirror tilts down automatically when the driver shifts into
reverse gear, which facilitates parking and offers the driver
a clear view of the curb.
Xenon light
Xenon light replaces the usual incandescent coil by an
electric arc to generate brilliant white light. Compared with a
conventional headlight system, this provides much brighter
and more consistent illumination of the road ahead and to the
side, offering the driver much better visibility of signposts,
side markings and obstacles on or next to the road. A further
advantage is that xenon low-beam headlights have a longer
service life than conventional light systems.
Zinc-coated materials
The BMW body is protected against road salt spray and
water through the use of zinc-coated materials wherever needed, especially in cavities. This careful use of zinc, while preserving the quality of the car for many years, also saves a
valuable material resource.
Micro-filtration system
The micro-filtration system removes impurities from the
air inside the car. Incoming air passes through an electrostat~
cally charged micro-filtration system. This completely filters
out particles such as pollen, coal and asphalt dust. About 60
percent of particles down to 0.5 micrometer are filtered out.
Bacteria, oil smoke, diesel smoke and atmospheric dust are
some of the pollutants that are eliminated or reduced.
