[ Vocabulary Verb Phrases with Prepositions ]

Working individually, try to choose the correct preposition for the verb phrases in each of the 18 querstions.
Then ask yourself the questions and write a short answer in the My answer column. Finally, working in groups of 3 or 4, ask

attention to the prepositions to make sure that they are the same as yours. Feel free to ask some follow-up questions too.

English - Intermediate Unit 7

Pg 65

[ Grammar Present Perfect Simple Vs Present Perfect Continuous ]

Working in pairs, look only at either worksheet A or B. First of all, you need to decide which tense to use to complete the 6
clues (clue number 1 is already conjugated for you). You can use the Present Perfect Simple or the Present Simple Continuous but
where both tenses are possible, you should use the Present Simple Continuous.
The object of the game is to guess the mystery film star with as few clues as possible. Take turns to read your partner the
various clues for the film stars and let him/her have a guess after hearing each clue. Give your partner a score for each of
the three film stars depending on how quickly they guessed the answer:
After one clue 10 points; after two clues 8 points; after three clues 6 points; after four clues 5 points; after five clues 3 points; after six clues 1 point.

Working in groups of 4, you are going to have an executive meeting between 4 directors of a fashion company who are
trying to decide how best to invest last years profits. Read your role card and come up with two more reasons to support
your preferred option. Have another look at the functional language for clarifying opinions in Unit 7.3 and collectively, decide
how you are going to invest the money: either 100% in one of the projects or a 75/25% split between two of them

Pg 70

English - Intermediate Unit 8

Unit 8
[ Vocabulary Getting On ]
Do you get on with people? How well do you get on with your brothers and sisters? How about with your classmates?
Working in pairs, ask each other the questions on your worksheet but dont answer them immediately. The questions are all
correct and perfectly intelligible but the language is not as idiomatic as it could be. When you read a question, your partner
must suggest an alternative phrase from the box of vocabulary related to getting on. Once you agree that the new version makes
sense, ask the question again and this time you can answer it and ask some follow-up questions too.

English - Intermediate Unit 8

Pg 71

[ Grammar Countable / Uncountable Nouns & Quantifiers ]

Working in teams of two or three, you have to think of one item for each column according to different categories and the
various quantifiers. You teacher will tell you what the category is and you have one minute to fill as many squares as possible.
For example, if the category was things in a restaurant, you could choose: a few waiters; a little whiskey; several tables; lots of
customers etc. You have one minute per category and your team gets 1 point per correct answer.

English - Intermediate Unit 8

Pg 72

[ Grammar Countable / Uncountable Nouns & Quantifiers ]

Complete the following sentences with an appropriate quantifier and then ask your partner some How much / How many
questions based on the prompts below. Remember, be curious, be nosy - ask lots of follow-up questions!

Pg 73

English - Intermediate Unit 8

[ Grammar Use of the Article ]

Working in pairs, decide which of the sentences are correct and which have an error in the use of the article. If they are not
correct, you must be able to correct them. Next, decide how confident you feel about each of them because next, you are
going to bid for them in an auction. Each team has 1,000 to spend and you can bid as much or as little as you want (in
increments of 50) for each of the sentences. You get 1 point for each sentence you buy and are able to correct!

English - Intermediate Unit 8

Pg 74

[ Grammar Articles and Quantifiers ]

Working in pairs, read your sentences to your partner. When you listen to your partners sentences, try to identify any errors
that you hear. Each of the sentences includes a grammatical error which is either an article or a quantifier. Once you have
identified and corrected the mistakes, decide if the sentence is true for you, and ask follow-up questions to get more details.

clauses to formulate complete questions. Then, take turns to ask the opposing team the questions.

Pg 77

English - Intermediate Unit 8

[ Grammar Relative Clauses ]

Working in pairs, read the sentence introductions (numbered 1 - 6) to your partner. When you listen to your partners
sentences, think about the relative clause and choose the sentence conclusion (letters A F) which best completes the idea.
Once you have both finished all 6 sentences, think of some new ones using the same underlined phrase but inventing the
rest of the sentence with your own ideas, for example: (A1) wordreference.com is a website where you can look up foreign words.

English - Intermediate Unit 8

Pg 78

[ Functional Language Being a Good Guest ]

Working in pairs, have a look at one of the two worksheets (A or B) and consider how you might react in the 12 different
scenarios. Have another look at the functional language for being a good guest in Unit 8.3 and work through the role-plays taking
turns to offer and accept apologies, ask and answer questions etc. Decide which of the 12 situations you and your partner
would like to perform for the whole class!

Pg 79

Working in pairs or threes, look at the various bad decisions outlined in each of the 6 situations and come up with two third
conditional structures for each one. Compare your sentences with another group to see if you have had the same ideas.
Finally, think about some bad decisions that have been made by you, people you know or perhaps politicians, football
managers etc. Think of some sentences (positive & negative) to explain what you would have done differently in each case.

English - Intermediate Unit 9

Pg 82

[ Grammar The Active Voice Vs The Passive Voice ]

Working in pairs, determine who is Student A and who is Student B. Look only at your own worksheet and spend a couple of
minutes deciding if each of the amazing facts sounds better to you in the active voice or the passive voice. Once you have
decided, read the sentences to your partner who has to decide if the sentence is indeed an amazing fact or if it is false.

Pg 83

English - Intermediate Unit 9

[ Grammar The Passive Voice ]

In groups of 3 or 4, form some questions to find someone in the group who has had the various experiences mentioned.
Your questions should be in the second person and in the passive voice - e.g. Have you ever been.
Dont forget to prolong the conversation with some follow-up questions if you are curious about your partners experiences.

Pg 84

English - Intermediate Unit 9

[ Grammar The Passive Voice ]

In two teams Team A and Team B, look only at your own half of the worksheet and formulate questions in the passive voice
from the various prompts. Your questions should begin When; Where; Who; What etc.
The opposing team has the opportunity to answer directly (2 points if correct) or they may prefer to hear the three options
first (1 point if correct)

Pg 85

English - Intermediate Unit 9

[ Grammar The Passive Voice ]

Working individually or in pairs, fill in the gaps in these 15 sentences with the verb in brackets using the correct tense & voice.

English - Intermediate Unit 9

[ Vocabulary Describing People ]

Try to be honest and tell your partner how you think different people would describe you. Would your parents describe you in
the same way as your teachers? Would your brothers and sisters describe you in the same way as your boyfriend/girlfriend?
Look at the worksheet below and, in pairs, decide how you would describe the various proffesionals and nationalities.

English - Intermediate Unit 9

Pg 87

[ Vocabulary Describing People - Compound Adjectives ]

Take a black square and try to combine it with a white square to make a compound adjective.
Some of these will exist and have meaning, others will be nonsensical. Try to spot the real ones and guess their meaning.

English - Intermediate Unit 9

Pg 88

[Functional language Expressing Uncertainty ]

Working in groups of 4 or 5, discuss the following 20 questions about the Centro de Idiomas. The questions are very difficult
and it is understandable that you wont know all the correct answers. For that reason, you should look first at the functional
language for expressing uncertainty in Unit 9.3 and use the uncertainty expressions whenever you are not sure of the answer.

Pg 89

English - Intermediate Unit 10

Unit 10
[ Vocabulary The Environment ]
How green is your language school? Working in pairs, take turns to ask each other the questions on the Green Test as well as
two extra similar questions (14 & 15) related to the topic of green buildings and the environment. If you dont know the answers,
your homework is to go and pester Stacey, the coordinator and ask her - in English, of course!

English - Intermediate Unit 10

Pg 90

[ Vocabulary Word-Building (Prefixes) ]

Start off by looking at the 8 statements. In each one, there is a definition in brackets. You need to use your word-building
skills to form a word to replace the phrase in brackets. There are 8 root words that can be used only once. You need to
combine these with an appropriate prefix to form a single word. Now decide if the statements are true for you (putting a tick
or a cross) in the Me Column. Now, make a question in order to find out whether or not your partner is the same as you.

Pg 91

English - Intermediate Unit 10

[ Grammar Reported Speech ]

Form teams of about 4 or 5 people and nominate one person as the secretary who will write down the answers for the
group. Now you are ready to go the races and bet some money. There are twelve races and in each of them, there is a
sentence in direct speech and another recounting that information in reported speech. Collectively, you must decide if the
sentence is grammatically correct or not and, if not, you need to re-write it correctly. Then, you must decide how much
money you want to bet. If you are certain, you should bet a lot (a maximum of $500), if you are not so sure, bet less money,
or nothing at all if you prefer. Get it right and you double your money; get it wrong and lose your cash!
The winners are the team who makes the most money.

Pg 92

English - Intermediate Unit 10

[ Grammar Reported Speech ]

In pairs, read the interview text then take turns reading the 6 statements to your partner who will decide if the statement is
true or false and supports this answer by reporting the information that Ella, Jos and Hiro & Erika mentioned in the interview.

Pg 93

English - Intermediate Unit 10

[ Grammar Reported Speech ]

In groups of 4, two of you are going to be interviewers and the other two the interviewees for a job as a language school teacher.
The two interviewers work together forming the questions that they will ask during the interview. The two teachers work
individually, deciding what they want to say about their teaching skills and experience.
Now for the job interview One interviewer interviews one teacher. After the interview, the two interviewers need to get
together to report what they asked the teachers and what the teachers answered. Likewise, the two teachers are curious to
know about each others interviews, so they get together to report how their interview went.
Teachers, which one of you do you think will get the job? Interviewers, which candidate, if any, will you choose to employ?

Work individually or in pairs if you prefer. Think of a place that you have visited and know quite well. It might be a foreign
country or another region, city or town within Spain. Do not write the name of the place on the worksheet or tell your
classmates which place you have chosen. Complete the 12 recommendations, warnings or pieces of advice, you might give to a
visitor to your mystery place . Now swap worksheets and see if you can guess the mystery place from you partners advice.

Written Work Correction Codes
When I correct your essays, I shall not actually correct them in the sense
that I shall not tell you the correct version.
Instead, I will underline an erroneous word or section and give you a hint, in
the form of a code representing the type of error you have committed. Stage
two of your writing task is to correct your own mistakes (preferably in a third
colour), then ask me to check your error corrections in the following class.
That way you will arrive at a grammatically and idiomatic sound solution and
hopefully remember the correct means of expression for the next time you
need to need to write something similar.

Here are the codes and an example of the type of error that they represent:
