Fs, Ttouan, Tlemcen, Alger, Tunis, Le Caire,
nahawand, wala bayt, etc.

Jusqu' nos jours, on
l'appelle mwaa andalou.
On

Arab music
Arab music originated in the Arab peninsula in
the pre-islamic period. It developed during the
Islamic era and became centred around the
schools of Mecca, Medina, Baghdad and
Cordoba.
From the 13th century onwards, other centres
of musical activity sprang up in several places
in the Arab world, such as Fez, Tetuan,
Tlemcen, Algiers, Tunis, Cairo, Aleppo,
Damascus, Beirut, Sanaa and Aden.
Arab music is characterised by five components:
10
1. Sam nahawand
(Composer: Ali Darwish, 1884-1952)
The sam is an instrumental genre which originated in Turkey. The Arab sam differs from
the Turkish one in its interpretation and plucking
techniques of the short-necked lute d and the
zither qnn. In addition it may be distinguished
by the rhythmic formula (wazn) played by the
percussion instruments as an accompaniment,
and by the different structural tonal systems on
which are founded respective performances.
The sam has four distinct parts, the nat,
which are linked by the taslm, a ritornel consisting of an interlude unmarked by pauses or
caesura. The sam, based on a combination
of even and uneven elements forms a metric
unit of ten beats (3 + 2 + 2 + 3). Only the last
na is based on a six-beat rhythmic structure.
This recording includes only the first part (first
na) and the taslm, each played twice. The
rhythmic cycle (wazn) is called: sam aql.
11
2. Mwaa Subna mn
(Composer: Omar al-Batsh, 1885-1950).
Rhythm sam aql (10/8).
The mwaa is a poetic form and an original
vocal genre of Arab classical music. Created in
Al Andalus in the 9th century by Muqaddam
al-Qabri, the mwaa only spread to the outside world after a long evolutionary period in
Spain. This explains why it won greatest popularity in the Arab East. To this day, it is called
Andalusian. The mwaa tradition of
Aleppo of the 18th and 19th centuries was subject to the strict rules of Arabic prosody.
A mwaa is identified by its first line, by its
main maqm, by its rhythmic cycle and by the
names of its poet and composer. In most of the
cases, information about the poet and composer have not been passed on. In that case, one
usually finds the reference qadm (ancient).
Among the most creative and original composers of mwaaat mention should be
made of Ahmad Qabbani (1841-1902) of
Damascus and Omar al-Batsh (1885-1950) of
Aleppo, whose Sabri Mudallal is the disciple.
This mwaa is composed of four lines of
two hemistiches each.
I said: when the light of your face was extinguished for me, / Cure me, Oh God, of the ill
from which I am dying.
12
Through weeping, my eyes have become inexhaustible springs, / And my eyelids so ravaged,
they will non longer close.
Improvisations:
5. Taqsm on the d
6. Layl, qada
4. Mwaa Mn ym abbayt
(Composer: Omar al-Batsh, 1885-1950).
Rhythm yruk (6/8).
13
Qudd of Aleppo
The qadd (plural: qudd) is a typical song of
the city of Aleppo. Brief melodies, varied,
light rhythms and lively tempi are the characteristics of the qad which, incidentally, is close
to the mwaa. These three qudd are not
performed in the maqm nahawand but in the
maqm ab who appears in this wala as a
secondary mode.

Rhythm yruk (6/8).
Moon, my favourite. In your company I am
your slave. / I fall prey to your beauty Oh
moon!
You send me a messenger. He says: I am the
slave in the name of your love! / What is
happening. Oh moon!
At the end of the first verse the singer improvises a layl and then a qada Y sakinn
(You who inhabit my heart).
