Fast Forward!
Its time to celebrate! You have now reached the last Lesson Plan with
aplomb and panache! Many words like aplomb and panache have been
borrowed from the French language to have meaning in English and
naturally, vice versa! Le volley and Le foot are two such examples
that French people enjoy talking about and doing!
We would like to help you to enjoy your achievement in Rocket French by
devoting Lesson Plan 45 to those expressions which are found in both English
and French, and at the same time, open another cultural door onto the
similarities and differences of both languages.

Allez La France!
In French, playing or doing sports is normally expressed by using either
jouer au, to play at, faire, to do/make, or aller, to go, as in
the following examples.

A Window on Euro Speak!

The world of sport is not the only one where you can find overlaps of
languages between English and French. With the inevitable streamlining of
cultural values over time, one would expect to see purist francophones
French speakers and anglophones, English speakers devise more and
more cross cultural terms and expressions.
Of course, some English expressions actually use the word french. This
sometimes identifies the origin of the expression or custom, and sometimes
serves as a derogatory term, which interestingly, has many counterparts in
English!
This verbal banter reflects many centuries of divergence,
camaraderie, comradeship, and a (usually) well intentioned cultural
jousting match!
When a French person says filer langlaise it means to run away like an
Englishman! Supposing you didnt want to be seen leaving a party for
instance, you would say Je fil langlaise. The English language has an
exact equivalent, taking French leave, which in effect means
disappearing from sight with no warning!
Pardon my French, is used to excuse oneself after a swear word or two
and leaves little to the imagination about an English persons view of
speaking French!
When a French person refers to something as an anglicisme they usually
mean a direct translation from an English expression has been used. One
such example would be to say Je vais faire du jogging, which is
accepted, even by the purists!
