Barriers to Total Quality Management Implementation
http://smartinvestorsreports.blogspot.in/2012/03/barriers-to-total-qualitymanagement.html
1. Competitive markets
This barrier to quality is mainly a mental barrier caused by a misunderstanding of
the definition of quality.
2. Bad attitudes/abdication of responsibility/management infallibility
The competitive environment, poor management practice, and a general lack of
higher expectations have contributed to unproductive and unhealthy attitudes.
3. Lack of leadership for quality
Excess layers of management quite often lead to duplication of duty and
responsibility.
4. Inadequate resources for total quality management
Profit margins of the organization with little regard as to whether their offers/ supply
to customers is of expected quality.
5. Lack of customer focus.
Most strategic plans of organizations are not customer driven. They tend to
concentrate much on profit-oriented objectives within a given time frame.
6. Lack of proper training/Inadequate Human Resource Development
2

There is evidence that lack of understanding and proper training exists at all levels
of any organization, and that it is a large contributor to worker resistance.
7.Lack of management commitment
A quality implementation program will succeed only if top management is fully
committed beyond public announcements. Success requires devotion and highly
visible and articulate champions.
BLOG 5
Total Quality Management
http://tqmgroups.blogspot.in/
This blog talks about the leadership role in the implementation of TQM. leadership
can serve as a beachhead for the TQM process throughout the
company. Leadership, with senior management's support, can take the TQM
process company-wide by developing and delivering the long-term training and
development necessary for the major organizational culture shift required by TQM
1) Involvement
TQM of any kind of new company policy or program requires participation from all of
the departments that will be affected. Company leadership needs to identify what
those departments are and create an implementation team that consists of
representatives from each affected group.
2)

Interest
Implementing TQM within a company requires a feeling of urgency on the part of
the entire company. It is the job of management to create that urgency by
explaining to the staff why the implementation is necessary.

3)

Monitoring
TQM within a company is not an exact process. It is a dynamic procedure that needs
to be monitored by management and altered to meet implementation goals.

4)

Next step
Implementing TQM is often done in phases. The company leadership needs to be
able to identify when each phase of TQM is complete and be ready to transition the
company to the next phase.
