Q1.The terms in the box are parts of a leaf.

Match (a) to (i) with one of these parts. [5]

S: T: Guard U:
Palisade cells Epidermal
Cells cells
V: W: X: Xylem
Cuticle Stomata vessels
Y: Z: Phloem
Spongy
mesophyll
layer

a. This tissue transports water to the palisade cells

b. These allow gaseous exchange between leaf and atmosphere.
c. The cells in this part are arranged to provide a system of
connecting air spaces within the leaf.
d. This tissue conducts the products of photosynthesis from leaf to
the rest of the plant.
e. This part provides most of the support in leaves.
f. These control the rate of diffusion of gases through the stomata.
g. This part prevents excessive evaporation of water from the leaf.
h. These parts are the main site of photosynthesis in the leaf.
i. Chloroplasts are not present in this layer of cells.
Q2. Structured Question:
Leaf discs cut out from a de-starched plant were divided into four
groups and labelled A, B, C and D. Groups A and B were floated on
distilled water, while C and D were floated on 5% glucose solution.
Group A was exposed to light, while the others were kept in the dark.
Groups A, B and C had air but group D was kept in a vacuum (no
air). After 2 days, all the leaf discs were treated with iodine solution.
The table below summarizes the treatment given and the results of
the iodine test.

a. Explain the results obtained. [4]

b. What inference can be made from the above experiment? [1]

Q3. Green plants make their own ‘food’ by a

process called photosynthesis.
[3]
a. Complete this word equation for photosynthesis.
Carbon dioxide + __________ glucose + _________
b. What other substance present in the leaves of
green plants is needed for photosynthesis to take
place?
c. What is absorbed by this substance to provide
the energy needed for photosynthesis to take
place?

Q4. The plant has several uses for the glucose

produced by photosynthesis. Some of the glucose is
converted in to starch, and stored in leaves or
roots. [5]
a. What is starch made of?
b. How can you test for the presence of starch?
c. Glucose is also used to produce energy for the
plant by the process of respiration. What other
substance needed for respiration is produced by
photosynthesis?
d. Which food groups provide most of our vitamins and

minerals?

e. Which 2 types of food group provide “long term” energy?

Q5. Solders in the arctic are recommended a diet rich in a

certain nutrient. Such a diet is different from typical diets
in tropical regions. [2]
(a). Which nutrient is the arctic diet rich in?
(b). Give two reasons to your answer to (a)
