1.1 Introduction
The ARGUS Currency Validator, which is designed with a configurable validator head, can
be used in a back-stack or a down-stack configuration. For storing currency, a SecurityRemovable Cassette (SRC) can be mounted either directly below or behind the validator
head. The addition of a newly designed 400-bill, Universal SRC, provides maximum security for storing currency from 62-mm to 85-mm wide. For customers who wish to use their
70-mm SRCs for storing narrow-width currencies (i.e., from 62 to 70-mm), the validator
head can be fitted with a specially-designed bezel and channel inserts.
ARGUS supports RS-232 communications which is the advanced GPT interface standard
used with the V1, V2.2, and MDB protocols supplied by GPT. This combination provides a
smooth transition for customers to the next generation of currency validation.
Interconnection of the Currency Validator with the gaming or vending machine is quick and
easy, and the parts for mounting and wiring are provided. A high level of validation and
system security, combined with reliability and longevity, make the ARGUS an ideal Currency Validator for gaming, video lottery, pull tab, vending, and currency dispensing
operations.

1.2.1.1 Optics
ARGUS identifies currency using its Red, Green, Blue, and Infrared (RGBI) optical array. This
optical array generates 56 channels of high-resolution data. Using 14 wide-area transmissive
and reflective detectors, and 24 emitters, the optical array can analyze 85 millimeters across
the bill without incurring any dead zones. This unique arrangement allows accurate bill recognition regardless of currency width. The four different wavelengths of emitters provide
the ability to create databases for any country using only one configuration. The high-speed,
low-noise analog-to-digital conversion circuits record 56 channels, and then processes the
information to determine the validity of the bill within 2.5 seconds.
To compensate for environmental conditions and degradation of emitters or detectors, optical adjustments are performed automatically during the main idle loop. This feature
assures outstanding bill acceptance is achieved when a bill is inserted.

When RS-232 DEMO program is installed on an IBM compatible PC, the user can access
the data stored in the SDA memory module. This module provides a serial communication
link with the Currency Validator. When the user clicks on the Read Memory command button on the SDA screen, monetary (i.e., number of bills sorted by denomination) and
statistical information (i.e., number of bills rejected) appears (see Figure 2- 2). For detailed information concerning the installation and operation of the RS-232 DEMO, refer to
GPT s Web site at www.gpt.com, select Technical Manuals, then select RS-232 Demo,
located in the Preliminary Product Manuals category.
Another software application, named Synergy Connect Professional (SCPro), was designed by GPT to simulate the functions of the Host Controller. SCPro is a Windowsbased PC application that allows the user to easily connect to GPT s Currency Validators
configured with either the V2.2 Standard or V2.2 Extended Protocols. In addition to accessing the data stored in the SDA memory module, SCPro allows the user to perform
validator setup, testing, software updates, and software development. To obtain a copy of
SCPro Users Reference Manual, Pub. No. G9S3094, contact GPT Customer Service

3.3 Protocols
The ARGUS Currency Validator supports serial RS-232 communications, which is the interface convention used with either the Standard or Extended versions of the V2.2 Protocol
supplied by GPT. In addition to this protocol, GPT supports the various industry-standard
communication protocols that are commonly used for vending, gaming, and video lottery
machines. For these other industry-s tandard communication protocols, a GPT Protocol
Adapter Assembly (PAA) is required 3. This device allows ARGUS to communicate with the
Host Controller.
Some of the industry-standard and GPT protocols available for the ARGUS Currency Validator are:
VFM/GL5 Serial/Pulse
IGT 2.2
IGT 2.5
The GPT Serial RS-232 Communication Protocol (Standard or Extended versions) do not require a PAA.
A detailed manual that describes this protoc ol is available at GPTs Web site (http://www.gpt.com/).
G3M0071 Rev. A
Page 29
Confidential
The code for both of these protocols is embedded in the unit's application software. Upon initial communication
with the controller at installation, ARGUS determines the appropriate protocol version, Standard or Extended.

The
The program checks the DIP switches for setup information; normally,
DIP-Switches 8 and 9 are set to the off position unless the Video-Level adjustment
is being performed.
b. The program checks memory for setup instructions; subsequently, it sets parameters and initializes registers.
c.
The red, Light Emitting Diode (LED), adjacent to the DIP-Switches, is flashing.
d. The Currency Validator motor runs in reverse for about 2-seconds; this action is
necessary to clear a bill (i.e., bank note) or other foreign material from the channel. (If the bill is not successfully returned or stacked, the process is repeated;
after the fifth attempt, the Host Controller is notified that a jam exists and the Currency Validator is disabled.)
e.
Stacker operation is verified by running the Stacker motor for two cycles.
f.
The CPU enters the Idle State when at least one denomination is enabled and the
stacker is attached to the unit. This is indicated by the red status LED (found adjacent to the DIP Switches) blinking once. In this state, the Currency Validator is
operational (i.e., optical sensors are idle, and the CPU is polling the front sensors
for activity) and it is ready to accept currency.

The CPU starts the stepper motor in the forward direction; this action engages the
bank note into the drive transport.
b. The CPU begins to collect and analyze optical and magnetic data.
c.
The rear sensor is activated, and the data collected is compared to a known database of programmed currency to determine the authenticity and denomination of
the bank note.
b. The Currency Validator sends the valid bill denomination message to the Host Controller for disposition. Most protocols, excluding high-level protocol, allow the Host
Controller to force the Currency Validator to either accept a valid bill or reject an
invalid bill. If the Host Controller has instructed the Currency Validator to accept
the bill, the next step is performed; otherwise, if the bill is not valid, the CPU begins the bill rejection routine (Subsection 4.2.2.2).
c.
The bill is moved to the SRC to be stacked (i.e., stacking state), thereby clearing
the rear sensor. This sensor signals the CPU that the bill has left the currency
channel. In response, the CPU instructs the transport to continue running, for a
fixed period, to ensure the bill is out of the channel.
d. The CPU stops the stepper motor and starts the motor in the SRC.
e.
After the bill is successfully stacked, the ARGUS Currency Validator informs the
Host Controller and updates its internal statistics.
Note: Credit is issued only after the bill is stacked.
f.
Page 34
The bill acceptance routine is now completed. The Currency Validator returns to
the Idle State and is ready to process the next bill.
G3M0071 Rev. A

The CPU starts the stepper motor in the reverse direction to reject the bill from the
channel (i.e., rejecting state).
b. If the bill transport cannot clear the channel, the CPU begins the channel clearing
process. Using back and forth motions, the bill is jogged until it is freed from the
channel and is returned to the customer. If necessary, the channel clearing process is repeated five times.
c.
If the bill is successfully rejected during one of these attempts, the CPU returns to
the Idle State. However, if the bill cannot be rejected after the fifth attempt, the
CPU switches to the Inhibited State. In this state, the Currency Validator cannot
operate until after the bill or debris is manually removed from the channel. After
the channel is cleared, the CPU will return to the Idle State.
G3M0071 Rev. A
Page 35

A bill is jammed in the channel and the Currency Validator is unable to move it out
of the channel and return it to the customer.
b. The Currency Validator is unable to stack the previous bill (Stacker Jam). The
Stacker is full or is removed.
c.
Page 36
The Currency Validators self-test routine has determined that a hardware fault exists and it is unable to operate. The validator will attempt to correct the fault, and
if successful, will exit the Inhibit State. If the fault is externally cleared, the Currency Validator will also exit the Inhibit State.
G3M0071 Rev. A
Confidential
When the Currency Validator enters a non-operational state and manual intervention is
required to correct the problem, then the Validator Disabled Flag will be set. This condition
can occur after attempts made by the Currency Validator to clear the jam have failed. It
can also occur if the Stacker is removed, or an uncorrectable hardware fault is detected
(i.e., Stacker Required for Operation Mode).

6.3.1.1 Scope
This procedure is applicable to all ARGUS Currency Validators and it must be performed
under the following conditions:
1.
At final installation of the gaming machine, prior to public use (this includes
retrofitting Currency Validators into gaming machines at the casino or operator site)
2.
After the unit is re-configured to accept a different size currency (e.g., when
the width of the currency channel is changed)
3.
4.
5.
When a database with a 100-series program is replaced by a 200-series program, or vice versa.
Note: When a 200-series program is replaced by another 200 series program, it is NOT necessary to perform the VLA. To determine the software
type, refer to the XProgramX label or the Program Revision Number on
your Program Specification Sheet.

Eight bills of currency, which are representative of the in-circulation quality (i.e.,
non-mint) of each denomination supported by the program, will be used.
Bills will be arranged so that their orientation is the same throughout each group
of insertions.
Starting with the first group, bills will be inserted once, that is, one at a time and
in a single direction.
The test will be repeated for each of the other denominations and directions supported by the program.
If more than two bills, of any denomination, are rejected regardless of insertion direction, then the Currency Validator fails this test.
6.3.3.1 Procedure
To test the bill acceptance rate of the Currency Validator, follow these steps:
Note: To optimize the optical sensing circuitry, perform the Video-Level
Adjustment (refer to Subsection 6.3.1) prior to this test. However, DO
NOT perform the Video-Level Adjustment if you are testing the ARGUS
Currency Validator to determine its current condition.
CAUTION: DO NOT use cut, torn, or perforated bills for this test. Damaged bills, which may be legal tender in circulation, can cause false test
results.
1. Obtain eight bills representative of the in-circulation quality (i.e., non-mint), of each
denomination supported by the program.
2. Starting with the lowest denomination, insert the bills one after another.
Notes:
1. Insert the first group of bills once, one at a time, in a single direction. If
more than two bills are rejected, obtain another set of bills, then repeat
this test.
2. If more than two bills are rejected for the second set of bills, discontinue
this test, and then perform Diagnostics in Chapter 5.
3. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for all directions and denominations supported by the program.

Overview
This Addendum to our technical manual was created as a place to STORE relevant GPT
technical bulletins for your Currency Validator. We are committed to providing high-quality
technical service and support to meet your business needs. As part of that support, GPT
periodically publishes technical bulletins covering a variety of technical matters as a supplement to our manuals. Further, our technical bulletins are a means to provide
information quickly to customers in between revisions of technical manuals. Our customers are encouraged to scan the technical section at www.gpt.com/tech_sect/ for the latest
product information updates.
Addendum
Also, our Support Engineers respond to questions regarding the use and function of GPT
products and help to answer software, hardware, and general application issues, and we
gladly solicit your recommendations for future GPT product enhancement. Contact our
Customer Service Department at Customerservice@gptx.com.
Although information contained in the technical bulletins found in this addendum has already been incorporated into this manual, it is presented here for illustrative purposes. As
additional technical bulletins are published onto GPT' s Web site, technicians are encouraged to print them out and place them into this addendum. In this way, technicians will
always have the latest technical information readily available.
Since GPT publishes its bulletins using serial publication numbers across product lines, bulletin numbers do not follow in strict ascending numerical order for a particular product.
The blank lines on the addendum title page are for listing any future bulletins included into
this addendum.

ARGUS-D Bezel Precautions
1 October 2001
Bulletin No. GPB1T03A
Bezel Precautions for ARGUS-D Currency Validator
This bulletin specifies the precautions to be observed when manipulating the bezel of
ARGUS-D Currency Validator. Damage to the bezel can occur when service personnel
attempt to open the channel assembly without releasing the spring-loaded latches. A
damaged bezel can disable the Currency Validator or reduce and degrade its
performance.
This bulletin also contains the proper handling instructions and recommendations to
protect the bezel of the new GPT ARGUS-D Currency Validator.
Scope
This bulletin applies to all GPT ARGUS-D Currency Validators being manufactured and
used in the field. The information in this bulletin is effective immediately.
Note: A copy of this Technical Bulletin should be distributed to and retained by
all service personnel for reference when maintenance is performed on
ARGUS-D Currency Validators.
Precautions:
1. The ARGUS-D Currency Validator is equipped with two spring-loaded latches on
the front of the unit (Figure 1). These latches must be properly disengaged
before attempting to open the Channel Assembly (Figure 2 ).

New Belts: Product Enhancement for ARGUS Currency Validators
This bulletin announces the use of and availability of new Timing Belts (i.e., Drive Belts)
for the GPT ARGUS Currency Validator. The new Timing Belts have more durability, and
will improve traction for note transport through the bill channel. Use of the new belts
ensures improved operation of the ARGUS Currency Validator.
Scope
All future manufacture of ARGUS Currency Validators will contain the enhanced Timing
Belts. ARGUS Currency Validators made prior to 24 April 2003, which contain the older
type belts, need only order the new belts should belt replacement ever become
necessary.
Belts Replacements
Unless otherwise authorized by GPT , belt replacement for the ARGUS Currency Validator
is restricted to GPT -trained and authorized service personnel. Unauthorized opening of
the Currency Validator head, as indicated by broken Tamper-Evident seals, will void the
ARGUS warranty.
Note: When transitioning a Currency Validator from old to new Timing Belts,
do not combine old and new belt- types. Order and replace the new belts as a
pair. Combining old and new belt types in a validator can impair performance.
