Chapter I

Introduction
Nursing education involves both theoretical and practical training processes.
Clinical training is considered as an indispensable and very important part of
professional nursing education. Clinical education is recognized as an essential and
highly significant component of professional education for nursing. Practical clinical
skills lie at the heart of nurses professional practice; therefore, the mastery of
fundamental clinical skills is an important component of courses leading to registration.
Since nursing is a discipline based on practice, there needs to be a curriculum of
education that offers students the opportunity to develop their clinical skills, particularly
the patient care skills. Clinical practice is one of the ways used to increase the nursing
students professional competence.
Clinical competence evaluation is defined as an integrated form of evaluation
seeking to combine knowledge, understanding, problem solving, technical skills,
attitudes, and ethics in evaluation. Evaluation, as a way of determining the clinical
competence, is one of the fundamental principles of development and student
achievement measurement in patient care outcome. In clinical evaluation, it must be
ensured that the students in clinical settings have an appropriate professional behavior,
establish an appropriate interaction with the patients, prioritize the problems, have the
basic knowledge about clinical methods, perform the care procedures correctly, and
apply critical thinking.

Background Of The Study

This study examined and identified the performance of the nursing students in
the clinical field. It also explored and correlated those variables to the factors affecting it.
This study also shows the patient outcomes, is their needs met, are they satisfied to the
care render to them by the student nurse.
Clinical experience has been the vital part of nursing education. It is the avenue
for the students to utilize the theories that theyve learned in their discussion. It prepares
student nurses to be able of "doing" as well as "knowing" the clinical principles in
practice. The clinical practice stimulates students to use their critical thinking skills for
problem solving. It is where the student nurses enhance their knowledge in nursing
concepts and principles as well as to develop and improve their skills and attitude
towards rendering quality of nursing services.

Nursing student's experiences of their clinical practice provide greater insight

to develop an effective intervention for every patient.
The aim of this study was to investigate student nurses' experience about
their clinical practice and if patients outcomes are met.

Local Literature

Clinical experience for students is a time to enter the work world of nursing and
caring. To function in the clinical setting students require a firm grounding in a range of
anatomical, physiological, sociological, psychological, pharmacological and nursing
interpretations and interventions. Moreover, they must somehow acquire an
understanding of the patient and start to develop a professional identity. As students
learn to become nurses there are elements of their educational process that cannot be
truly taught or explicated, only experienced. For students, contextual learning occurs as
they are immersed in the clinical experience with patients.( Stockhausen)

Their skill, knowledge and attitudes along competency in caring, decisionmaking, moral responsibility/accountability assertiveness and interpersonal relations
can be refined through: attendance to seminars or training and workshops, continuing
education through post graduate studies and regular assessment of their own strengths
and weaknesses along each aspect in patient care and effecting changes within
themselves. (Toralba, Manaog)

To prepare the learners to the professional roles of the nurse, teacher models
behavior and student actualizes the role/s guided by established learning goals through
creative and caring modes of delivery that promote competency, empowerment,
confidence, reflection and collaboration in the clinical setting. A variety of creative, welldesigned, collaborative, constant, and caring competency monitoring and evaluation not
only encourages superior performance of the students but also improves the
performance in clinical setting. (Butcon)

Patient can be considered as the centre for any healthcare system. Now-adays there is growing realization for the patient-centered healthcare system. The
outcomes of a clinical intervention obtained by the patient i.e. patient-reported outcomes
(PROs) are seemed to be of more importance in future than any other outcomes like
clinical, physiological or caregiver-reported. As per studies, enhanced treatment
adherence and outcomes can be obtained by giving attention to patient feedback on
healthcare outcomes and patient behavior change. (Deshpande, Rajan, Nazir)
