Encounters: Art & Context
In an era in which thinking from traditional disciplines like art, dance and
architecture functions less and less,
the definition of art seems to be more of
a methodology than an appearance. In
the sequence public encounters with
each time- two international experts,
this cultural phenomenon is clarified
and discussed with the public.

Artists ideals and the ideal curator
Can curators carry out their practice by
themselves? Where and how does the
voice of the public, the critic, the institution, or more over, the artist fit within
curatorial reflection? Defne Ayas (director Witte de With) and Jens Hoffmann
(author, curator and currently Deputy
director of the Jewish Museum in New
York) will lead a discussion about this
matter in which several curators and
artists participate.

Art Rotterdam offers a dynamic yet intimate alternative to the big draw
art fairs on the international art circuit. With a focus on young artists and
up-and-coming talent. Art Rotterdam makes Top 5 Winter Fairs of the Huffington Post

Welcome to Art Rotterdam

Art Rotterdam has evolved into the
most important place to discover
young art. This seventeenth edition
again brings you the latest developments in visual art in a variety of exhibition concepts. Youll experience
the rich diversity in contemporary
art production from different points
of view; video art at Projections,
installations and performances
at Intersections, the latest generation of Dutch artists in Prospects &
Concepts and young galleries with
solo presentations at the New Art
Section. With the abundance of
young art and the well-balanced mix
of commercial and non-commercial presentations Art Rotterdam

distinguish itself from its foreign

competitors that much often have
developed into art fairs for millionaires. Art Rotterdam is an art fair for
connoisseurs and all art lovers alike
and attracts international attention
in the busy schedule of art fairs.
This year we would like to assist
you in finding your own personal
way to the art that inspires you
the most. We have made an effort
to provide extra information on
and around the fair so you have a
clear view of whats on show. For
instance, the Dutch art critic Hans
den Hartog Jager will illustrate
his personal highlights of the fair

in a film. This film is on show at

Intersections and is the ideal starting point for your visit to the fair.
Reflections is the name of a threeday debate-programme initiated
by West The Hague, Witte de With
Center for Contemporary Art and
the magazine for contemporary art
Metropolis M.
To inform you digitally of whats
on show at Art Rotterdam we have
teamed up exclusively with the
digital art platform Artsy.net. A
week before the fair starts you can
browse through the website and
see what will be presented by the
galleries as well as background
information of various artists.

The vibrant city of Rotterdam once

again offers beautiful museum
exhibitions, site fairs, open studios
and pop-up shows. Free shuttle buses operate between the

A Home from Detroit at

Art Rotterdam project Ryan Mendoza
From American dream to American nightmare
Imagine: Detroit, once the largest
centre of automotive industry in the
world. Till the credit crunch that
is when car factories like General
Motors, Ford and Chrysler got into
financial trouble and had to close
down. People are dismissed and are

left with immense mortgage debts.

The crisis on the housing market is
the final blow. Residents left their
homes and entire neighborhoods
were abandoned. What once was
a prospering city with 1,8 million
inhabitants is now a ghost town of

less than 700.000 inhabitants with

chaos, decline and crime as a result.
Homes are sold at auction for 1.000
dollar to prevent vacancy in the area.
Houses dilapidate and are being
town down with bulldozers all the
time.

The Nederlands Fotomuseum and

the Rabo Art Collection together
present an exhibition in which the
enormous polaroids by Ulay play a
central role. Ulay is known for his
performances from the seventies
and his intense cooperation with
Marina Abramovic from 1976 till
1988. For his whole artistic career

he worked intensively with the

Polaroid camera and he is known
as the specialist in this area. In the
early seventies he started a very
personal investigation to his own
identity in relation to among others
social conventions and the areas of
tension between men and women

Ryan Mendoza

a piece of history of my home

ground, and myself with it, freeze
in time
Visual artist, born and raised in
New York, lives and works in both
Berlin and Naples. In 2013 he
returns after 20 years- to his home
ground. It is then he sees in Detroit
the reality of the day. For Mendoza
this project feels like a homecoming. With the destroyed Detroit
home he tells a story. Mendoza: As
an artist I am very happy that I have
the opportunity to freeze a piece
of my home ground, and myself
with it, in time. By saving one home
from demolition, to relocate it
and rebuild it at Art Rotterdam
(and eventually at the Verbeke
Foundation in Belgium) I am inviting people from all over Europe to
not only experience the memory
of one person but also the collective ambitions and unintentional
shortcomings of a whole nation.

Geert Verbeke

Doing what is not done by

someone else

Jeroen Dijkstra, from Livingstone

Gallery The Hague, has been working with the artist for a number
of years now. He knew about
Mendozas intentions with the
Detroit home and introduced him
to Geert Verbeke of the Verbeke
Foundation in Belgium.
Verbeke was always busy working
for his transport company. He had
scarcely been abroad and almost
never took the time for a vacation.
When he heard of the Mendoza
project, he immediately took the
airplane to Detroit to meet Mendoza.
He is overwhelmed by what he sees.
Entire streets are abandoned, just as
schools, hospitals and office buildings. One instantly realizes that we
live in such prosperity in Europe and
you find yourself asking: can what
happened in Detroit also happen
here? That is what makes the project
so very interesting. Used to doing
what is not done by someone else,
Verbeke only sees a challenge.

Crowdfunding campaign

The home has recently been demolished and is now being transported
to the Port of Antwerp. Verbeke

seizes the opportunity to first

show the home at Art Rotterdam
before it is being rebuild at the
Verbeke Foundation. A crowdfunding campaign took care of the
transport costs from Antwerp to
Rotterdam and the rebuilding and
dismantling costs. Visitors of Art
Rotterdam get the unique opportunity to experience Mendozas story
in the Detroit Home.

A refuge for art

In the end the Detroit home will

find a permanent place at the
Verbeke Foundation, since 2007
one of the largest private initiatives
for contemporary art in Europe.
12 hectares of scenic area and
20.000 square metre of exhibition
space, once the warehouses of the
transport company. Verbeke has
been living on the outskirts of the
nature reserve for about 35 years.
An atypical collector who chooses
to live together with his wife Carlabetween the art and nature, as
free and independent as possible,
because that is his objective. A
refuge for art; unfinished, unpolished, contradictory and always in
motion.
