STUDENT PROJECTS

(Batch-3, 2014-

OBJECTIVES

To design a Spherical Flange-type fuel tank for Space

vehicle

PROJECT OUTLINE

Space vehicles need a thrust generation element for its

attitude control and maneuvering. This thrust is normally
generated by expanding a pressurized fuel, gas or it
combustion/decomposed products through thruster
nozzles. The pressurized fuel or gas is stored in a fuel
tank.
In this project, i) a spherical flange-type fuel tank is to be
designed for 10litre capacity with MEOP of 35bars and ii)

FOR THICK CURVED PANEL.

STUDENT PROJECTS

(Batch-3, 2014-

OBJECTIVES

To determine the infusion process potential for

manufacturing of thick composite laminate through
VARTM technique.

PROJECT OUTLINE

Defect free manufacturing of thick composite parts

through VARTM method is difficult task in terms of
infusion process strategy and composite strength. VARTM
process is dictated by Darcys law which includes
pressure difference, permeability as key process
parameters. In this study, permeability in the direction of
thickness will be focused and determined with suitable
combination of fiber orientation and process strategy.
Fiber orientation would have value of 0, 90 & 45
while process strategy would include the use of interlaminar flow media, resin injection points etc. Effect of
inter-laminar flow media, ply-drop and wrinkles on
structural strength would also be addressed.
Study would include process simulation using software
and part manufacturing via VARTM technique, part
inspection and structural testing.

EPDM is amorphous elastomer and exhibits weak

mechanical properties. Reinforced fillers such as silica,
carbon black, aramid fibers etc and other additives are
generally added to enhance the mechanical properties of
EPDM. One of the most important characteristics of EPDM
is their ability to accommodate large quantities of fillers
and other additives without affecting process ability and
without
creating
unnecessary
instability
in
the
composites. Therefore, EPDM can easily be compounded
with various concentration of aramid fiber to get the
desired properties.

MICRO-THRUSTER
To design a test bench capable of testing and measuring
MEMS-based micro-thrusters thrust between 0.1 to
1.0mN and impulse bits between 0.01 to 1mNs

The advent of MEMS and MEOMS has miniaturized the

satellites in form of micro, nano- and pico or cubesatellites. Owing to their low manufacturing and launch
cost these satellites are gaining popularity in space
applications and research.
MEMS-based micropropulsion systems are also employed in these smaller
satellites mainly for its attitude control. This project
involves the design and analysis of a thrust test bench.
The project will start with a detailed literature review of
available test benches for small scale thrust
measurements, their design concepts and working
principles. Next step will involve designing of thrust test
bench capable of testing and measuring thrust levels of
0.1 to 1.0mN and impulse bits between 0.01 to 1.0mNs
(Further design details will be provided later). The final
stage will include the analysis of designed test bench on

AERO-THERMAL MODELING AND ANALYSIS OF

SATELLITE FAIRINGS IN CONTINUUM REGION

OBJECTIVES

Modeling and analysis

provided payload fairing

PROJECT
OUTLINE

Payload fairings protect the satellite from the external

aerodynamic loads, vibration, noise, temperature
extremes, dirt, dust, rain, snow, and micrometeorites
that may be encountered as the satellite is launched
and accelerated through the atmosphere into space.
During acceleration of launch vehicle, fairings
experience thermal loads. For proper designing of
fairings, it is extremely important that these loads
must be appropriately quantified and analyzed for
aero-thermal heating.
Based on the available literature on aero-thermal
heating,
an

DESIGNING OF CLINOSTAT

The main objective of this project is to design and fabricate

the 2D/3D Clinostat
. A clinostat is a device which uses rotation to negate the
effects of gravitational pull on plant growth (gravitropism)
and development (gravimorphism). It has also been used to
study the effects of microgravity on cell cultures and
animal embryos.
A single-axis clinostat only produces the effect of
weightlessness along its axis of rotation. A 3D or two-axis
clinostat
(generally
called
a random positioning machine or
RPM), can average gravitational
pull over all directions. These
machines often consist of two
frames, one positioned inside the
other, each rotating independently
This Project involve the following
1. Design of 2D/3D clinostat.
2 Fabrication of Clinostat.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF A RELIABLE POWER

SPACE APPLICATIONS

OBJECTIVES

Design and analysis of a highly reliable Power

Conditioning Unit (PCU) for a micro satellite of about
40-50W (24V) average power based on Maximum
Power Point Tracking (MPPT) architecture, using
commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components.

PROJECT OUTLINE

Power Conditioning Unit (PCU) is one of the most

critical units of a spacecraft power subsystem. This
unit is primarily responsible for regulation and
conditioning of the solar array/battery power and then
generating a main power bus which is then supplied
to the loads through distribution units. This project
involves design and analysis of a PCU in which MPPTbased regulation scheme is implemented for a
satellite having 40-50W average power with fully or
semi-regulated bus at 24V. One of the prime foci
throughout the design phase would be to study and
incorporate various techniques to improve unit
reliability considering COTS components. The

OBJECTIVES

Development of platform independent mobile GIS

application with following features
a. Offline navigation,
b. LBS features depending on useful public and
personalized points of interest (POIs) and
c. Support on Android, iOS, Symbian and Windows

PROJECT OUTLINE

Various mobile GIS applications are available providing

navigation and other LBS features, but these applications
are designed for specific mobile platforms and require
good and stable internet connection to run and retrieve
information from servers. Since internet conditions are
very poor in most of the areas of Pakistan, therefore GIS
data is required to be stored in smart phones locally. In
the research project, platform independent mobile GIS
application is required to be developed for providing
navigation services along with other location based
services (LBS) features. LBS features mainly include
location based customized information sharing, optimal
path calculation and route planning etc. The application
must be capable to run on any mobile platform including
Android, iOS, Symbian and Windows. The data used in
this research include road network and public and
personalized POIs, which should be stored in the
smartphones.

Risk Analysis

Urban sprawl has been a big problem for most of the

metropolitan cities. The utilities / resource management,
environmental impact assessment and the risk analysis
have always been the priorities of urban planning.
