Using your Inventory File Template

This page contains information you need to create, validate and upload your inventory file to Amazon
this page so you can refer to it as you go.
Save a copy of this file as an Excel worksheet on your hard drive. Then proceed to enter your produc
using the guidelines below.
Data Definitions Tab
The Data Definitions tab contains the acceptable values that can be used as you fill out the Template
Data Definitions sheet for reference.
The Data Definitions tab also indicates whether a field is Required, Preferred or Optional:
Required: Required fields are the minimum values necessary to create your product in the Amazon c
bold headings in the template. Failure to enter a valid value in a required field will prevent your prod
catalog. Other data may be required as well, depending on the values you enter elsewhere. (For exam
date if you provide a sale price.)
Preferred: Preferred fields give customers the basic information they need to make an informed pur
that you provide product data for all fields in the Preferred column. Not providing this data can result
descriptions or make it difficult for customers to find your listing. For example, you can create a page
without providing Price and Quantity, but your offer for it will not appear on the site until you provide
Optional: Optional fields give customers product information that is useful, but not critical, when ma
recommend that you provide as much Optional product data as possible for your product. In some ca
Optional may be important to your product or business or required per your seller agreement.
Valid Values and BTGs
As indicated in the Data Definitions tab, some fields require that you use terms from the Valid Values
the product attribute and are used for product discoverability and categorization.
Some cells require that you use valid codes from the Browse Tree Guide (BTG). The BTG is a separate
downloaded from seller Help. BTGs are category-specific and contain the rules that Amazon uses to a
our site. In it you will find mappings between browse nodes and Amazon's controlled terms which allo
categories. In the BTG for your category, find the category most appropriate for your product, then u
determine what field and value you need to put in your template to place your product in that catego

The Template tab contains the template from which you will create an inventory file. Column headers

Validation Macros
This template may contain validation macros that will help you to complete the template correctly. If
macros may be turned on or off at your discretion, but we urge you to keep them enabled at least th

Helpful hints for using the validation macros:
Enabling the macros: If you disabled the macros when you opened this file, you will need to close
enable them. You can do this two different ways:
Option 1 (recommended): Reopen the file and check Always trust macros from this source in the se

Option 2: Before you open the file again, set your security level for Excel to low. In Excel, from the T
Security, and select Low on the Security Level tab.
Drop-down menus: Some fields have dropdown menus with lists of valid values to choose from. Fo
select a value from the drop-down menu. You cannot type in your own value, even if it is valid. If yo
existing value and choose an alternative from the drop-down menu.
Other fields have dropdown menus with values that are suggested but not required. You can type in y

Amazon.com Toolbar: This floating toolbar appears when the macros are enabled. It provides qu

.log File: The macros create a .log file of errors and warnings in the same location as your Product T

Importing data: If you have data in an Excel file that is in another format (such as with different fie

Save your Inventory File
When you have finished entering your product data into the Template tab, save the Template tab (on
(*.txt) file. (For the China Marketplace, save as Unicode Text (*.txt).)
This is your inventory file that you will upload via the Upload Products & Inventory tool in your seller
Validate and Upload your Inventory File
Validate your data and upload your file to Amazon at the same time by clicking the Upload file butto
Before your offers are uploaded to the site, our system will automatically validate your data. Data tha
in red in your file and an explanation will appear in the cell comment. You can read the cell comment
validation process is complete, you can choose to upload whether or not validation was successful; ho
successful, your upload may be rejected.
Any errors in the upload will appear in a Processing Report. This report can be downloaded from the
section of the Upload Products & Inventory page in your seller account.
You can also run validation without uploading the file by clicking the Validate button on the Amazon.c
cell will automatically remove that cell's red border and cell comment.
Note: We recommend first uploading 15 or fewer products for testing purposes. You can upload the r
have completed a successful test.
Updated Templates
When Amazon.com updates valid values, data validation rules, or explanatory text for the data valida
the updated template by clicking the Update Template button on the Amazon.com toolbar. (You will n

Image Standards
Every product on Amazon needs one or more product images. Choose images that are clear,
straightforward, and easy to understand. They must accurately represent the product and be informat
rich and attractively presented. Show only the product that is being offered for sale, with minimal or n
propping. Text, logos, and inset images are not allowed. Whenever possible, provide several images, w
each one showing different angles and details of the product. This is your opportunity to show your
product to your customer, so quality matters.
We reserve the right to reject images that do not meet our image standards.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have all necessary rights to the images you submit.
MAIN Images
*The background for a MAIN image must be pure white (pure white blends in with the Amazon search
item detail pages, which have RGB values of 255,255,255).
*A MAIN image must not be a graphic or illustration and must not contain accessories that are not bei
dispatched with the product, props that may confuse the customer, text that is not part of the produc
any logos, watermarks or inset images.
*The product must fill 85% or more of the image.
Additional Images
*MAIN images should be supplemented with additional images showing different sides of a product, th
product in use, or details that are not visible in the MAIN image. For media products, this could include
the back cover, sample pages, or screenshots. You can add up to eight (8) images.
*A white background is recommended, but not required. Additional images may not include logos or
watermarks, and all props or accessories must be presented in a way that will not cause customer
confusion.
Image Size
Images should be 1000 pixels or more in either height or width as this will enable the zoom function o
the website (zoom has been proven to enhance sales). Files measuring less than 500 pixels on the
longest side will be rejected by our system.
Naming and formatting

*Amazon accepts JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), or GIF (.gif) file formats (JPEG files are preferred as they are
smaller in size and can therefore be processed and uploaded more quickly).
*A suggested way to name an image file is to save the image on your web server using the product S
as the file name followed by the view type or variant code--MAIN, PT01-PT08 (additional images), SWC
(usually a color swatch only used on products with more than one variation). Examples:

Uploading your Image files

Once you have named the file and saved it to your web server, enter the URL of the image file in the
appropriate cell of your product template.

Definition and Use

uyers and should be populated for all your items. Some are required to create an offer.
A unique identifier for the product, assigned by the
merchant. The SKU must be unique for each product
listed. After you have established a SKU for a product,
please do not try changing it without first deleting the
associated product from our systems through a delete
feed.
A short title for the product. This will be displayed in bold
on the product page and in the title bar of the browser
window. If listing child products, please ensure to include
the color and/or size in the product's name to differentiate
items.
Specify the manufacturer for your product
This is the manufacturers model number for the product.
Within a category there are often multiple product types
defined. Selet a product type from the drop down on the
template tab or the a value from the valid values tab.
Use this to specify what your item is. This field is
primarily used for browse classification. If left blank, your
item will not be found in the site.
The brand or manufacturer of the product. Populate this
field if you want your brand name displayed on the
Amazon.com site.
A standard, alphanumeric string that uniquely identifies
the product. This could be a GCID (16 alphanumeric
characters), UPC or EAN. This is a required field if
product_id_type is provided.
The type of standard, unique identifier entered in the
Product_ID field. This is a required field if Product_ID is
provided.
A text description of the product. If you see #### signs
where you should see the text, clear the format of the
cell. This can be done by clicking Edit in main menu,
select Clear & then Formats.
Specifies the type of operation (Update, PartialUpdate or

Delete) to be done on the data provided. If left blank, the
default behavior is "Update." Use "Update" whenever you
are changing any field in the existing product's
information, including reducing the inventory to 0. Only
use "Delete" when you wish to remove a product
completely and permanently from the catalog.
After you have established a SKU for a product, please do

not try changing it without first deleting the associated
product from our systems through a delete feed.

A price greater than 0. Do not include thousands
separators or currency symbols.
Merchant-fulfilled products: Enter the quantity of the item

you are making available for sale. This is your current
INVENTORY commitment. Quantity is required for all
"child" or stand-alone items. If left blank when first
submitting the product information, the item will be
displayed as "Out of stock." Do not enter quantity for
parent items.
Amazon-fulfilled products: Do not enter quantity, as it is
not applicable for products fulfilled by Amazon. Instead,
submit fulfillment_center_id in a separate column (see
data definition for details).
The currency code for price data. This is required if map,
msrp, item_price, or sale_price is provided. The same
currency will apply to all price-related fields.
Specify the Date for when this item can launch on the site
(this applies only to you product uploads after you have
launched). For upload and testing purposes, set this date
to a date at one year into the future. When you are ready
to go live, set your date to one in the past.
Amazon.com's standard code to identify the tax properties
of a product.
This is the "manufacturers suggested retail price".

The sale price at which the merchant offers the product
for sale, expressed in local currency. The site will
strikethrough the product's standard_price and indicate
that the item is on sale at the sale price.
The date that the sale price will begin to override the
product's standard_price.
The last date that the sale price will override the item's
normal price; the product's standard_price will be
displayed afterwards.
This is the first date on which a merchant can deliver a
pre-orderable product (one that has never been available
prior to this date) to a customer.
The number of individually packaged items (a.k.a. units)
included, such that each item is the smallest unit with a
scannable bar code (UPC / EAN), and each item is
packaged for individual sale.
Indicates the time, in days, between when you receive an
order for an item and when you can ship the item. The
default leadtime-to-ship is one to two business days. Use
this field if your leadtime-to-ship is greater than two
business days.
This is the date that a merchant will be able to ship any
back-ordered items to a customer.
Indicates the maximum number of these same items that
can be shipped together in the same package.
If you can print a gift message with the item indicate that
here. If left blank, defaults to 'false'.
If you can gift wrap an item indicate that here. If left
blank, defaults to 'false'.
Indicates whether the manufacturer has stopped making
the item.
A value provided during the Merchant registration

process. Do not input a value when not known.
The code name from the Scheduled Delivery SKU List for
this product. This is used to associate this product with a
delivery schedule. If empty, this product is associated
with the default SKU List.
Sellers can create a set of ship configurations based on

business needs and use cases. The ship configurations
can be region based and have rules to set SLA and rate
for the region. When listing product to create offer, seller
needs to select one ship configuration for the product.
The ship configuration will be used to retrieve the valid
ship options on the website.

The weight of the product when packaged to ship. This is
displayed on the product page and used to calculate

no variations. The product is by default a "child" with no "parent"
(sometimes called an "orphan").
Note: Column headers in bold indicate the data is required.

Note: The product-tax-code for every product offered by an Amazon seller
is A_GEN_NOTAX. This is a default value, so if you do not enter it, it will
automatically be entered by Amazon.com.
Example 2: This is an example of a "parent" with two "children". The

parent (the one listed in the first row of this example) is not a sellable
product; it is a description of a set of products. Note: don't enter a size,
color, count, type, parent sku, relationship type or quantity for the
parent product, but do enter an image URL. Do not enter data such as
price, time-to-ship, weight, etc., for the parent product, since these are
overridden by the child product data. Be sure to put the price, weight, size
etc., in the child products, since this will be different for each.
Also note that the bullet points and description are needed for each child
