County United Way exceeds campaign goal

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
STAFF WRITER

United Way of Washington County raised

$1,400,757 from it's recently-completed fund
raising campaign, exceeding the goal of
$1,339,000.
"Incredible, a lot of hard work went into
that," said Mike Murphy, president of the
board of directors for the county United Way,
during a celebration held at the West Bend
Mutual Insurance Prairie Center Jan. 26. . He
thanked campaign co-chairs Tom and Pat
Strachota and others "who accepted our
challenge to be the best they can. This represents a 7 percent increase over the previous
year."
He added the agency has had tremendous
campaigns the past five years, and explained
the county United Way has changed its
model to be responsive and results-driven.
"The giving of this community has been
phenomenal. It has increased almost 29 percent in at the past five years, which is historic here," he said.
Murphy said the increase of $94,000 over
the previous year is the third-highest

SELECTION OF
CRAFT BEERS

Dear Dr. Winter, I see advertisements for discount

implants in the paper what are the differences in treatment
when people offer such discounts?
First of all I would ask what the dentists training is and
how many implants they have placed. Does your dentist
have a specialty status such as being an oral surgeon, a
periodontist or are they board certified in implantology by
the American Board of Oral Implantologists? Do they have
Fellowships in the American Academy of Implant
Dentistry or a Diplomate in the International Congress of
Oral Implantologists? I am an advocate of any dentist being
able to place implants within their scope and training. You
as the consumer can ask questions to insure your dentist is
adequately trained. You may visit the ABOI.ORG, the
AAID.COM to see the rigorous credentialing process that
exists in implant dentistry. As a graduate of the Misch
International Implant Institute, I can say there are some
rigorous training courses for implant education and for
dentists performing complex implant treatment this
training is invaluable.
Next realize that not all implants are the same, not all
chimneys are the same and not all laboratories making your
crowns and bridges are the same. While dental implants
made by reputable companies all work, there can always be
discussions as to why a certain implant was selected over
others. Sometimes standard abutments or chimneys can be
used and sometimes-esthetic zirconia (white) chimneys are
preferable. The selection of a custom abutment can
influence the costs of implant treatment. Lastly, dental labs
charge different amounts and that charge can mean you are
having a master laboratory technician making your crowns
under microscopes to insure the best fit or they can have
their crowns shipped to China to have them done in
factories that dont have the same quality control standards
we have here. The dentist should be able to discuss the
level of quality you are receiving.
I think all dentists want to help control costs as this
allows more patients to say yes to needed dental care. But
when someone promises a low price and says they can do
it for X they often have to change that price when they
evaluate the patients lack of bone, need for grafting, sick
and failing teeth that increase the complexity of the
restoration so often a discount price is used in advertising
to get you in the door!

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

I would be wary of people that promise prices in a
newspaper and trust the dentist that gives you prices based
upon your medical and dental history, a truly thorough
examination and x-rays as well as a cone beam scan or 3
dimensional imaging if needed. I always offer discounts
to help people get the dentistry they require as insurance
companies are not comprehensive for dentistry.
I offer complimentary implant consultations and second
opinions. I offer discounts on implant examinations and xrays for people that want firm costs outlined at their visit.
That is how health care should be runnot by offering
bargain basement prices without seeing your particular
situation.

to make the campaign successful.

"You can take pride in knowing the
funds you have raised for United Way
will deliver meaningful end results for
the
programming
throughout
Washington County," Murphy said.
He said United Way invests and provides people with building blocks in
three areas: Education, income stability
and health. Murphy said over the past
year program funding focused on health
and addressing communities priorities.
According to research from Aurora
Healthcare, Froedtert & the Medical
College of Wisconsin as well as feedback
from community conversations, the top
three health concerns were identified as
alcohol and other drug abuse, chronic
disease and mental health.
Murphy said that in the fundingrelated process, community volunteers
selected six new programs to address
root causes in the area. One of the new
organizations being funded for the first
time is the county Heroin Task Force.
The task force includes representation
from nonprofits, government agencies,
and healthcare business is focused on
addressing the root causes of heroin
abuse, specifically reducing prescription
drug abuse.
"Not only are we working on providing new program funding to help address
our growing drug problem, but we also
sponsored an Opiate and Heroin
Awareness Tool Kit prevention guide, for
families created by members of (the)

local heroin task force," Murphy said.

Murphy said the tool kit has helped
increase awareness and provided local
resources to assist those looking for
help. He thanked colleges and school
districts for distributing the tool kit
guide.
"We live united. We can tackle these
problems and bring about real, lasting
change in the community," Murphy said.
He explained the United Way of
Washington County funds 28 programs
through 25 nonprofit agencies to help
local residents in need.
Pat Strachota said it was "an honor
and a privilege" to serve as campaign cochair.
"Patti and I accepted this role
because we care so deeply about the
community in which we live and work,
and where we raised our family," added
Tom Strachota.
Pat Strachota said the cornerstone of
the campaign was to raise awareness of
United Way and increase the participation of community members in the campaign.
Local companies and volunteers for
the campaign were praised during the
event. According to Tom Strachota,
there were 17 "Pacesetter" companies
that raised more than $557,550.
Organizations that gave more than
$10,000 toward the campaign were also
honored.
"We were blessed to have so much
support from everyone," Pat Strachota
said. "Washington County is truly a special place."
