Visible Stitches - with Bonnie Stahlecker
(This is a workshop offered by BAG, the Santa Fe Book Arts Group)
A tutorial on the Long Stitch and the Buttonhole Stitch
Book arts Room, Santa Fe Community College
Santa Fe, NM
March 12-13, 2016
Time: 9-4, Sat and Sun.
This incredible two-day workshop will focus on two binding styles: the Long Stitch and the
Buttonhole Stitch. These stitches are a simple yet attractive method of attaching the book
sections to the cover though openings in the spine. Participants will make two books, one of
each style. Both books will have a supple leather wrapper with fore-edge flap and closures
system.
We will work with reclaimed and new leather in a choice of colors. Participants will learn how
to line the leather, create interesting spine embellishments and cut attractive buttonholes. In
addition, we will explore ways to decorate paper with stencils and acrylic ink. These papers will
show through the buttonhole of the second book.
The books are 6 inches high and 4 inches wide, a perfect size to stash in your travel bag. And
with 120 pages, there is plenty of room to record your thoughts.
Vessel, the Guild of Book Workers triennial juried members exhibition, features 43 works from
book artists and craftspeople from across the country. Inspired by the theme, participants
interpret vessel in diverse ways and create some of the finest examples of book arts today. The
University of Denver Libraries is one of six venues showcasing these works, which tour the U.S.
from October 2015 through March 2017.
Check our website/blog later in the month for information about a chapter event during the run of
Vessel at DU.

RMGBW Member Gathering:
A group of RMGBW members as well as book fans in the community gathered on December 5
to admire one of the most complete collections of the Kelmscott Press in the country. The
viewing was courtesy of Brian Trebnath, Special Collections Librarian at Denver Public Library.
They also visited the DPL vault and were impressed with a large antiphonal, among other
treasures. The group then hiked down to Abecedarian Gallery, to see the best in contemporary
book works. It was a great book-filled afternoon!

Thank you to all of you who participated in the survey on the topic of splitting our Chapter. We
will remain as one for now and work together to make this a great Chapter. The results are
