THE INITIATIVE
Message from Professor Andreas Barner,
Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors,
Boehringer Ingelheim
An innovative approach
1 Mission 1 Million is a global* disease awareness initiative that is providing 1 million for projects,
selected by public vote and the Expert Panel, which fulfil the overall mission of helping prevent as
many as 1 million atrial fibrillation (AF)-related strokes.
The public voted on 184 1 Mission 1 Million project submissions entered by individuals, patient and
professional groups and healthcare centres across 36 countries. Each submission proposed an
approach to increase awareness of AF-related stroke within the community whether through research,
Public voting ended on 22nd June 2011 and the 32 winners were announced at a special awards
ceremony in Paris on 28th August 2011.
To learn more about AF and the risk of stroke, people can visit www.heartofstroke.com.
oehringer Ingelheim is running the campaign internationally, with the exception of the US and UK. Boehringer Ingelheim in the US is running a
B
campaign specifically for US residents that aims to raise awareness of atrial fibrillation and stroke risk called Facing AFibTM (www.facingafib.com).
About AF
For the winners, the hard work really begins with the
implementation of the projects, but those people and
organisations have proven their innovative capacity and
commitment to the cause. Together we will really make a
difference in the prevention of AF-related strokes.
One in four people aged 40 years or older develop AF in their lifetime, making it the most common
sustained heart rhythm abnormality.1,2
Up to 3 million people worldwide suffer a stroke related to AF each year, equivalent to one person
every 10 seconds.3-7
People with AF are five times more likely to suffer a stroke than people without AF and AF-related
strokes tend to be more severe and disabling than non AF-related strokes.4,5,8
The SPEAK about AF Survey (Stroke Prevention Education, Awareness and Knowledge), the largest
and most extensive survey ever conducted in people diagnosed with AF and the physicians who treat
the condition, revealed that more education is needed about the link between AF and stroke.9 Read
more about the survey at www.speakaf.com.

all age groups in Slovenia through free recreational, life-style activities with an educational note and
telemetric ECG recordings. In order to reach younger generations our activities will include recreational
activities such as quadrille dancing.
The objective is the detection of cardiac arrhythmia in at-risk, hypertensive patients who are aged 65
and over by giving them an ECG monitor linked to a blood pressure self-measure for 8 days. Data will
then be analysed in telecardiology. The goal is to detect arrhythmias earlier on and to optimise blood
pressure monitoring.

An online course will be presented as a learning object (LO) with a total duration of 4 hours, autodirected and automated, through which we intend make aware and sensitise the general population
regarding the characteristics of atrial fibrillation (AF) as the primary risk factor for developing CVD.
One of the basic objectives of this LO will be to teach the general population the appropriate technique
to measure pulse, to know if it is regular or irregular, since there is evidence that when classifying pulse
in this manner (your own and the pulse of others), it can be appropriate enough to detect a disease
of the same type as AF and therefore to raise the level of awareness and personal responsibility to visit
the doctor.
