COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH

February 7, 2016
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year of Mercy
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the
Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians
and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus
attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help
our neighbor in their spiritual needs."
Forgiving Injuries
Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not
have God's limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus
teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying
on him to help us show others the mercy of God.

Let go of grudges.
Saying sorry is something we learn as kids, but how
often do we really mean it? Forgiveness transforms
hearts and lives.
Participate in the Sacrament of Penance.
Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Soup & Scripture

Mark your calendar for our annual Lenten Soup &
Scripture series, starting on Wednesday, February 17,
from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Hall.
Please join us for an encore presentation of
Altaration, a video series that will help us learn more
about the Mass and come to the table refreshed. If you
would like to sign up to bring a soup to share, or to
volunteer, contact Robin at 619-922-7941.

Ash Wednesday
February 10
Masses:
7:00 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 6:00 p.m.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory
days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of
abstinence.
Fasting is obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When
fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal.
Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to
equal a full meal. Abstinence from meat is binding
upon members from age 14 onwards.

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross are held at 7:00 p.m. every Friday during Lent in the church, beginning next Friday, February 12.

SAN DIEGO

Adoration
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be
held next Saturday, Feb. 13, from 8:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. in the daily chapel.
If you would like to attend at a designated
time, there is a sign-up book in the chapel.

Souper Bowl of Caring

February 6 & 7

This weekend is the Souper Bowl of Caring. The youth

of our parish will be at the doors after all the Masses
with their soup pots to collect for the homeless in our
community. This is a nationwide collection where the
totals collected at each church are reported but kept
in our community to help those in need. Please help
support our youth as they continue their service work
with their Outreach Program.

needs throughout the Diocese of San Diego. Your

in our diocese: those who attend Catholic schools,
formation of new priests and care for our retired
priests, evangelization and accompaniment of
Young Adults, and the consoling presence of Christ
for those imprisoned.
Parishioners will receive pledge packets in the
mail. Donations can also be made online at
www.sdcatholic.org. Thank you for your support.

Gala/Auction
This years annual GALA/AUCTION is scheduled for
Saturday, March 12 from 6-11 pm at Ascension Hall
in Tierrasanta. Our theme for this year is A World of
Pure Imagination.
This event is one of our schools main fundraisers.
The profit earned from this event will not only help
us purchase a new Language Arts and Social Studies
series for the elementary school, but it will also help
us provide many needed improvements in our facilities. The Raffle Ticket order forms are now available
in the school office. The Raffle Prizes are $5,000,
$3,000, and $2,000. Tickets can be purchased for
$25 each in the parish hall after the 9:30 Mass.
