Colorectal cancer is the second leading
cause of cancer death in both men and
women in the United States. Each year,
more than 140,000 people are diagnosed
with colorectal cancer in the U.S. and
over 50,000 people die from it.
Screening efforts have decreased colon
cancer nearly 30% in our area and
much of this progress is attributable to
colonoscopy.
Colorectal cancer is a silent killer. Once
symptoms occur, advanced disease
is often present, so prevention is key.
Colonoscopy is safe, cost-effective, welltolerated, and can save your life.
Preventable. Treatable. Beatable.
The good news is that 80-90% of
colorectal cancers can be prevented
through regular screening with
colonoscopy. The majority of colorectal
cancers arise from precancerous
growths in the colon called polyps,
which can be found during a screening
exam and removed before they turn
into cancer. Colorectal cancer screening
should be a part of routine health care
for people 50 years of age and over.

the exam be of the highest quality,
or else cancers, known as interval
cancers, can unfortunately occur before
the next recommended exam. Studies
clearly show that the best protection
is provided by gastroenterologists who
are skilled at finding precancerous
adenomas, measured as the Adenoma
Detection Rate, or ADR.
Recent studies show convincing
evidence that quality colonoscopy
drastically reduces the risk of death
from colon cancer, but poorly performed
colonoscopy may not. A person at
average risk with normal colonoscopy
results wont need another exam for
10 years. Should a polyp or cancer be
found, follow-up intervals may be more
frequent.
Five Steps to Lower Your Risk of
Colorectal Cancer
1. Get regular colorectal cancer
screenings beginning at age 50. If you
have a personal or family history of
colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps,
or a personal history of another cancer
or inflammatory bowel disease, talk to
your doctor about earlier screening.
Be sure your exam is done by a
gastroenterologist with a proven record
of high ADR (Adenoma Detection Rate).
2. Eat a low-fat diet.
3. Tobacco use increases your risk of
colorectal cancer. If you use tobacco,
quit. If you dont use tobacco, dont start.
4. Exercise for at least 30 minutes three
to four days each week. Even moderate

Thats thanks to the Lenten season that precedes
Easter Sunday. During Lent, Christians traditionally
abstain from eating meat on Fridays. Lent is an
ideal time for men and women looking to get
healthier to include more vegetables, whole grains
and seafood in their diets. Try substituting ground
beef with tofu, and incorporate vegetables where
meat may be used. For example, layer lasagna
with slices of zucchini instead of filling it with
sausage. Plus, eat more fish. Research shows that
fish high in omega-3 fatty acids decreases the
risk of abnormal heartbeats, which can lead to
sudden cardiac death. Omega-3 fatty acids also
decrease triglyceride levels, slow the growth rate of
atherosclerotic plaque and lower blood pressure.

Prescription drugs that numb pain may convince a patient
that a musculoskeletal condition is less severe than it is, or has
healed; this misunderstanding can lead to over-exertion and
a delay in the healing process or even to permanent injury.
The Governors proclamation pointed out many of the
reasons why more and more people are turning to Doctors of
Chiropractic for care for their musculoskeletal issues as their
primary source of care.
One big reason for the shift in public opinion and increased
usage of chiropractic can be attributed to education on the
effectiveness of chiropractic and the growing awareness of
the overuse of opioids in the United States. In addition to
the proclamation made by Governor McCrory, the media has
even more recently started reporting on the prescription pain
medication epidemic.
An article in a December 2015 edition of the Washington Post
reported that over 47,000 people died of prescription opioid
overdose in 2014. In 1999 the number of deaths was under
17,000. The number of deaths keeps spiking every year and
has not shown a decline yet. Additionally, almost 7,000 people
on a daily basis are treated in emergency departments for
using these drugs in a manner other than as directed. The
Washington Post even quoted the CDC statement about

opioid prescription The risks are addiction and death,

and the benefits are unproven. The CDC has written a
recommendation for physicians to tackle chronic pain with
other methods. All this time Doctors of Chiropractic have
been available to serve as an alternative drug-free method of
care and many have already taken advantage of their services.
According to a recent Gallup Poll released September 8, 2015,
approximately half of all adults in the United States have seen
a chiropractor, 14% of US adults go to a chiropractor regularly
and more than 33 million adults went to a chiropractor in 2014.
Adults are not the only ones that use a chiropractor. Parents
are taking their children to see a chiropractor for all sorts of
reasons. Those reasons include addressing colic, scoliosis,
injuries, asthma, plus much more, or just to make sure they
are getting a level of attention to stay healthy as their bodies
are growing and developing. Parents also see the advantage
of having their children treated in a manner that does not have
their children taking potentially harmful medications.

Why is GIP preferable to a hospital in some cases?

The staff in our hospice houses are under the direction of a
physician and are on site at each location 24 hours each day.
The team of medical personnel have extensive training and
experience in caring for patients with advanced illness. They
know what needs to be done to allow the patient to rest easy,
recuperate, and return home as quickly as possible.
How soon before the patient can go home?
Each situation and each patient is different, but Hospice staff
do everything possible to treat the most pressing needs and
get the patient feeling better again. GIP care is by nature
short-term, and Hospices goal is similar to yours to allow the
patient to be at home where he or she is most comfortable.
What kinds of things are done during GIP care?
It depends on the symptoms and pain that need to be
controlled. CRH can treat nausea that wont go away, help
when breathing becomes overly difficult, remove excess fluid
that is causing discomfort, and provide constant monitoring
of medications to achieve a proper balance. There are lots of
techniques available to restore quality of life.
Does the family have a voice in the care thats
provided?
Absolutely. No decision is made without input from the patient,
the family, and the hospice team of medical professionals.
Hospice is a health care partner, and its primary interest is the
patients quality of life. At any time, the plan of care can be
reevaluated based on disease progression and outcomes.

When Tragedy Strikes . . .
Twice
If you havent lost someone near to

you yet, prepare yourself because it will
happen. We are all destined to lose loved
ones, relatives and friends its simply a
fact of life. If theres a silver lining to this
dark cloud, its the fact that most people
only have to deal with these losses one
at a time. But what if the unthinkable
happens? What if you lose two or more
loved ones in a short time period?
This is exactly what happened to
Charleen Stokes in 2014.
Charleen grew up in Burke County, part
of a family that looked like most families
in the region. Charleen had a mom

and dad, a brother and a sister. Like all
families, they had their ups and downs.
But even at the worst of times, their
love for each other kept the family
moving forward.
Then they hit speed bump number one.
Sister Tasha had been living in California
when she was diagnosed with metastatic
breast cancer at the age of 23. A fighter
to the end, Tasha battled the disease
for 16 years the last 12 years on
chemotherapy. Wanting to be closer
to her family, Tasha moved back to
North Carolina.

My sister was just amazing,
said Charleen. She was so
strong for so long. To be
honest, I dont think most
people realized how sick
she really was because she
always had a smile on her
face. When people would
ask her how she was doing,
she would tell them she was
hanging in there. I realized
later that she was trying to be
honest but at the same time
not answering the question.
I do know that one of her
biggest concerns was Mom
and Dads feelings. She told
me one time that no parent
should ever have to bury a
child.
Tasha had been home for
only three months when
the family hit speed bump
number two. Charleens mom,

Joanne, was diagnosed with

stage 4 lung cancer. A lifelong
smoker, her prognosis was 16
months or less.
I dont think Mom realized
what stage 4 meant,
especially in the beginning,
said Charleen. I do know
that mom was afraid at first. I
didnt know what to tell her or
what to do. The whole family
was thrown into this horrible
situation.
Although Tasha only spent
a couple of days in hospice
care, Joanne was in hospice
care for over 4 months.

their care they took the whole family. Its so clear that this
wasnt just a job for them its a passion for them. They gave
me, my brother and Dad hope. They knew what we were going
through before we even knew. Throughout this ordeal, I could
always feel the love they poured into everything they did.
Tasha went into the Inpatient Center at Burke Hospice &
Palliative Care in January of 2014. She spent two days in the
facility before she passed.
I didnt realize or wouldnt accept just how sick Tasha was,
said Charleen. Looking back I can see that Tasha was holding
on as hard as she could for Moms sake. We all visited Tasha
at the center, including Mom, on her last day. Maybe Mom
could see it better than the rest of us because she stopped
talking that day. Tasha, being the fighter that she was, waited
until we all left before she would allow herself to succumb to
the disease. Only my brother was there at the end. I know my
sister I know she was trying to protect her family from having
to watch her pass. Im so glad that she wasnt alone though. I
take a lot of comfort knowing that my brother was there, and
that she was in the hands of the Angels in Scrubs.
Now the focus was on Joanne. She had not spoken since the
day Tasha passed away. Simply put, she was shutting down
and the family could see it.
It was on the third day after Tasha passed that mom finally
spoke, said Charleen. Ill never forget what she said to me.
She said Im tired and then added Im not afraid anymore
as she looked up at me. We knew that it was time. Mom was
home, exactly where she wanted to be. We called the Burke
Hospice & Palliative Care nurse and told her it was time. She
asked if we wanted her to come out and we told her no. We
were gathered around her as she used her last breath to say
Love you to us.
Even though the Burke Hospice & Palliative Care nurse wasnt
there at the end, they prepared us for what was going to
happen, said Charleen. It wasnt scary at all. It was a beautiful
moment. My Mom was there when I took my first breath and
I was there for her last. Burke Hospice showed us what to do
in the last stages so we would know what to expect. Ill be
forever thankful for that because I was able to be present in
those last moments.
I wish Tasha would have let hospice come in earlier for her,
said Charleen. I know they could have helped her with her
pain and her fears. Its my wish that anyone going through an
ordeal like this would turn sooner to hospice. People are afraid
of hospice but, for me, hospice took away the fear. Thanks to
Burke Hospice & Palliative Care I was able to walk both of my
girls home.

and diseases. This means that patients
may no longer be walking blindly into
appointments with doctors.
Facing an illness is never easy, and
the decision-making abilities could be
hampered by emotions and the desire
to improve as quickly as possible.
Patients who do not have all of the facts
may have to rely solely on the expertise
of caregivers and physicians when
making important health care decisions.

With Herbal Products
Millions of people rely on herbal remedies to treat a
variety of ailments or conditions. Although the efficacy of
herbal remedies is not often backed by federal monitoring
organizations, many users of herbal products find them
highly effective. Though these remedies come from nature,
not all herbal medicines are harmless. They may have
side effects or interact with mainstream medications. It is
important for consumers to weigh the risks.
The World Health Organization estimates that between 65
and 80 percent of the worlds population rely on alternative
medicine as their primary form of health care, while only 10
to 30 percent of people use conventional medicine like the
products that are sold over-the-counter and at pharmacies.
The American Medical Association has urged its members to
better educate themselves on alternative medicines. In fact,
almost one-third of American medical schools, including
Harvard University, Yale University, Georgetown University,
and Johns Hopkins University, now offer coursework in
alternative medicines.
Perhaps because of their popularity and relative
ease of purchase, herbal remedies are surrounded in
misinformation. Many people believe that, because herbs
are not chemical drugs, this makes them completely safe.
Yet, some herbal remedies do have adverse effects, as do
vitamin and mineral supplements. In order to be treated by
both alternative and conventional medicines, individuals
need to educate themselves about the truths and myths
surrounding herbal products.

Herbal compounds vary in strength. While many
conventional medicines are carefully produced and tested to
ensure consistent potency, some herbal remedies are not. The
strength of one herbal product may not be consistent from
pill to pill or between brands. It can be difficult to maintain
consistency with products that come from nature. Just as
grapes may produce a different tasting wine year after year,
herbs may not always produce the same potency.
There are side effects. Natural doesnt always mean safe.
Keep in mind that illegal drugs like marijuana and opium come
from natural sources, and those drugs are far from completely
safe. Even the tobacco in cigarettes is from a naturally growing
plant, and smoking is responsible for the majority of lung
cancer cases every year. Ginseng, ginkgo biloba and even
garlic supplements can thin the blood and make one bleed
more freely. Certain vitamins in high levels can be toxic. Kava
kava, taken for anxiety, can sometimes cause liver damage.
Herbs are not always regulated. In the United States, herbs
are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. They
dont oversee the production, sale and use of herbal products.
That means that the safety and usefulness of these remedies
may not be adequately documented.

Herbs and conventional medicines are not always

compatible. While herbal treatment can be used in
combination with traditional medicines, a medical doctor
should be consulted before taking medications in tandem.
Complications can arise from the interaction between
conventional medicines and herbal medications. Herbs may
reduce or increase the effects of certain medications that
can result in organ damage or even fatality. St. Johns Wort,
for example, which is used to improve mood, may reduce the
effectiveness of oral contraceptives and also changes the
plasma concentrations of omeprazole, a GERD medication.
Herbal remedies may delay doctor visits, putting men and
women at risk. Thanks to the relative ease with which herbal
remedies can be purchased, people may put off seeing a
doctor when they arent feeling well, preferring to try an herbal
medication first. This could prolong effective treatment of
disease or put off a diagnosis of a more serious ailment.
Before taking any herbal remedy, discuss your treatment
options with your physician. Be honest about your concerns
regarding conventional medicines and try to find a solution
that leads to a successful outcome.

Annual physicals: Gynecologists and family doctors can

conduct physical examinations. Both can order blood lab
tests and urinalysis to check cholesterol levels and for any
vitamin deficiencies. Heart rate, blood pressure, weight, and
height are other screenings that can be handled at either
office.
Bacterial and yeast infections or urinary tract infections:
A general practitioner or gynecologist can address these
infections. However, some women feel more comfortable
discussing genital issues with their gynecologists. A
gynecologist may be more experienced at identifying
problems and ordering appropriate follow-up exams. A
family doctor may not require an examination unless you
request it and may treat broad symptoms.
Colds and coughs: In theory, a gynecologist may be able
to diagnose and treat common health ailments. But the
majority of a gynecologists work concerns the female
reproductive system, so common colds and coughs are
best left to general practitioners who diagnose respiratory
and bronchial conditions daily.
Mood disorders: If changes in mood seem to stem from
hormones or the result of a pregnancy, a gynecologist or
obstetrician may have treatment options available that
can alleviate specific triggers. Many women initially turn
to a family doctor if they are experiencing depression
or changes in mood or behavior. Both a family doctor
or a gynecologist may refer a patient to a mental health
specialist if the situation seems to warrant more action.

Prostate cancer is a deadly disease that forms in the tissues of the
prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system that is found
below the bladder and in front of the rectum. According to the
Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common

is not a death sentence. Like many types of cancer, prostate
cancer is most effectively treated when discovered in its early
stages. For example, the five-year survival rate for patients
diagnosed with localized prostate cancer, which describes
cancer that is found only in the part of the body where it
started, between 2004 and 2010 was 100 percent.
Early signs of prostate cancer
Prostate cancer does not always show signs or symptoms
in its early stages, and thats because it tends to be slowgrowing. A sign of prostate cancer refers to something
that a physician or health care professional can observe
and recognize, while a symptom is something that only the
person experiencing it can feel. Its important men recognize
that certain symptoms associated with prostate cancer
may be caused by other conditions and that the presence
of these symptoms does not mean a man has prostate
cancer. However, its equally important that men who notice
symptoms associated with prostate cancer bring them to the
attention of their physicians immediately.

early indicators of the disease. These changes may include a

frequent need to urinate, especially at night; an intense need
to urinate; difficulty in starting or stopping the flow of urine;
inability to urinate; weak and/or interrupted urine stream; and

Blood in urine or semen and painful ejaculation may also
indicate the presence of prostate cancer.
Late signs of prostate cancer
When prostate cancer is not detected early, the cancer then
grows larger and may metastasize, or spread to other organs
of the body. This spreading can produce the following late
signs and symptoms, which differ greatly from those that
appear during the early stages of prostate cancer.
bone pain, especially in the back, hips, thighs or neck
weight loss
fatigue
low red blood cell count (anemia)
weakness or numbness in the legs or feet
loss of bladder or bowel control
Though prostate cancer is a potentially deadly disease, men
who prioritize screening and learn to recognize its signs and
symptoms can vastly improve their chances of surviving a
diagnosis.

Valley Medical Center became only the 32nd
