LENTEN OFFERINGS
Adult Faith Formation will offer several opportunities during
Lent to further your spiritual life. Please see the flyer in
todays bulletin for more information on these opportunities
to help deepen your Lenten experience. Please call the
office to register for any of the groups or sign up on the
sheets in the foyer. Sign-ups help us plan for setup,
materials, & refreshments.

SEAFOOD DINNER
Our 2nd Annual Lenten Seafood Festival is scheduled for
Saturday, March 12. We will again have two seatings:
5-6:30pm & 6:30-8pm. Tickets are: $32 for adults, $18
for kids 6-12 years, 0-5 Free. SAVE THE DATE!

ASH WEDNESDAY
Lent begins this Wednesday with Ash Wednesday services at
8am & 7pm, both Masses in the Church. Ashes will be
distributed during the Mass. Join us as we begin Lent in this
Jubilee Year of Mercy.

SECOND COLLECTION
This weekend we take up the collection for the Church
in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection
illuminates the way for the people of the region by
helping Catholic organizations provide affordable
shelter and training to seminarians, in addition to
providing pastoral care and catechesis. Your donation

Humility Is the Best of All Beginnings
Over the years, all of us have no doubt met or observed people who possess many gifts and talents which they use
with great skill to promote themselves and their ideas and agendas, but who, despite their many successes, seem
always to crave and need ever increasing amounts of praise and affirmation and compliments for all they achieve. A
friend of mine calls this type of person "A Thousand Percenter", meaning that while exhibiting 1,000% ego, they seem
at the same time to possess 0% self-esteem.
The Scriptures this weekend describes God's calls to three men who also obviously suffered from low self-esteem.
Isaiah protests that he is not worthy to be a prophet because he is a man of unclean lips. Paul describes himself at
being the least of all the apostles, not deserving to even be called an apostle. Peter tries to send Jesus away because
he, Peter, is a sinful man. In all three cases, this was not false humility coming from Isaiah, Paul or Peter, because all
of what they say is true, of themselves, and perhaps also of most of us.
The humility with which Isaiah, Paul and Peter start, by acknowledging their unworthiness and sense of inadequacy, is
the ideal starting point for God to begin working with and within them. It is a firm foundation, unlike "A Thousand
Percenter" who relies only on the sandy foundation of his own resources and seeking only his own glory and affirmation.
In 2nd Corinthians 12:10, Paul speaks of the great paradox in his own life: that when he is at his weakest is also when
he is at his strongest. From personal experience, Paul tells us that when he recognizes his own weakness and turns
to God, God's power and strength become available to him. Whenever he turns to God in his own emptiness or poverty,
it is God who fills him and enriches him, so that when he truly surrenders himself to seek and do God's will, God
accomplishes in and through him things Paul would have otherwise found impossible to do or accomplish.
A good Lenten practice for all of us might be to pray unceasingly that God might grant us the humility to recognize our
sinfulness and ask for God's mercy, to recognize our weaknesses and ask for God's strength that we might rise above
them. Then, like, Paul, we can be joyful in knowing that when we are at our weakest it is the Lord who can make us
strong.

WOMENS GROUP
NEW YEARS WISH LIST
Thank you to those who have responded
to our wish list. We have received a
donation to cover the cost of the piano
cover and some money for the hand rails.
We are still looking for bids for the
handrails and will keep you updated on
costs.

The Womens Group will begin a series on women of the bible this
month. We will look at an individual women each month and have bible
readings, history and background on each of these often misrepresented
women and learn more about their stories. We will soon publish a
calendar of the discussions so you can plan on attending. The group is
open to all women, teens and up. New members are always welcome.
We serve light refreshments and meet on the third Sunday of each
month in Carvlin Hall.
