Character Representation

In our opening sequence we have 3 characters. In our sequence we

wanted to make sure there were typical conventions so the audience
would be able to recognise it is thriller film.

Character 1: Rosie (Olivia Conneely)

Gender: The characters gender is female, we decided to keep this aspect stereotypical
because she is playing the role of an innocent child as this is a convention of a thriller film.
Throughout the sequence the character is portrayed as nave as she is unaware of the
situation, this heightens sympathy for her. Another reason we wanted to keep this character
female is because she would be perceived as more vulnerable therefore creating an emotional
link between the audience and the character. We decided to have
her dressed in a cartoon onesie so she looks young and innocent.
Race: The characters race is White, this also conforms to a
stereotype because she is playing an innocent character and in
most films characters playing these roles are usually white.
Age: The character is aged 8, we decided to make the character
this age because the actress playing Rosie is also aged 8 so it
makes the storyline more believable.
Disability: The character has no visible disabilities we decided this
wouldnt be relevant to this particular storyline.
Sexuality: As the character is only a child there is no
relevance to the storyline on her sexuality.

Character 2: Ella (Danielle Conneely)

Gender: This character is a portrayed as a stereotypical
teenager who is very careless as she leaves her 8 year old
sister home alone at night, we decided the gender should
be female because it is a stereotypical aspect of a thriller
film to have a weak, vulnerable female protagonist.
Throughout the sequence she isnt focused on a a lot
however is shown as in trouble when she leaves the house
quickly and is stressing on the phone to someone, her look
is quite simple to make her role of a sister seem more
realistic so the audience can relate with her. We decided to
have her dressed in a long sleeve top, coat and jeans because she is meant to be portraying a
teenager so therefore shes dressed quite casually.

Race: The characters race is white and isnt conforming to any stereotypes. We decided that
the characters race should be white because the character Rosie in the sequence is also
white so they would have to be of the same race if they are meant to be sisters.
Age: The victim in our opening sequence is meant to be quite young, she is meant to be aged
17 we decided to make her age young because she is playing a teenage girl and therefore by
her being young it creates an emotional connection between the character and the audience.
Disability: The character has no visible disabilities, we decided not to highlight upon this
because the character is doesnt really have a significant role in
the sequence.
Sexuality: The character is a heterosexual woman however,
there is no scenes highlighting the sexuality of this character as it
relevant.
