Corning Expands Light-Duty

Filter Capacity in Germany
European standards drive demand for new Corning
DuraTrap AT HP diesel filters and next-generation
filters for optimized gas engines

iesel vehicle manufacturers

are striving for greater engine
performance and fuel economy while
meeting Euro 6 emissions standards
under a myriad of driving conditions.
The Corning DuraTrap AT HP filter,
the latest advancement in Cornings
DuraTrap AT family of diesel filter
products, is a compact aluminum
titanate solution that meets those
needs. Featuring an optimized material
microstructure, the filters highly porous
walls enable higher catalyst coatings to
address tighter emissions limits without
impacting fuel economy.
For gasoline vehicles, direct injection
(GDI) engines are growing in popularity
as drivers demand more fuel efficiency
and engine power. These engines
produce a high number of fine
particulates that pollute the air.
European regulators intend to address
this issue in upcoming regulations that
will include real-world driving standards,
and will establish more stringent
emissions limits and address particulates
generated by GDI engines.
In response, Corning has developed
unique filter products to capture gasoline
particulates without sacrificing engine
performance. The new cordierite-based
gasoline particulate filter (GPF) product
family is designed to enable a range
of system configurations as European
car makers prepare to meet the new

emissions standards. As North America

continues to strive for cleaner air through
tighter regulations, there are strong
indicators that GPF technology also may
expand to the region in the near future.
At Kaiserslautern [Cornings
manufacturing facility in Germany],
we are currently scaling to supply
DuraTrap AT HP filters and gasoline
particulate filter product lines, said
Klaus Wellstein, general manager,
Germany and South Africa, Corning
Environmental Technologies.
Investments in advanced technology
and reliable supply are why Corning
continues to be a strong partner after
more than 40 years in the clean-air
solutions industry.
Corning is a leading supplier of
advanced cellular ceramic substrates and
diesel particulate filters for the worlds
major manufacturers of gasoline and
diesel engines. The company invented
an economical, high-performance,
cellular ceramic substrate in the early
1970s that is now the standard for
catalytic converters worldwide. In
1978, Corning developed the cellular
ceramic particulate filter to remove
soot from diesel emissions. Corning
continues to leverage its expertise in
materials, processes and manufacturing
to develop advanced ceramic substrates
and diesel particulate filters that help
meet demanding mobile emissions
requirements.

3DCeram Offers CERAMAKER, a 3D

Printing Unit Dedicated to Ceramics

DCeram positions itself as an

industrial partner to support its
clients in their development by offering
them CERAMAKER, a 3D printing
unit dedicated to ceramics, as well as
assistance and support so that they
can acquire the necessary know-how
to produce parts independently and
optimize their use.
CERAMAKER offers clients the
opportunity to explore the multiple
possibilities of ceramics material. This
unique system has been developed based
on 3DCerams production experience.
The company offers an unrivaled pool
of expertise in the field of materials
and 3D printing processes for ceramic
objects with complex architectures. It
has developed a comprehensive offer
to assist and support its customers by
helping them choose the right type of
ceramic and by offering on-demand
production service: since 2011, the
company has been using its unique 3D
printer for the production of prototypes,
one-off parts and small runs. All parts
are characterized by high-precision
production, an extraordinary level of
detail, a perfect finish and a complex
architecture that only 3D printing makes
it possible to produce.

The CERAMAKER 3D printer uses

laser stereolithography. The specificity
of this technology is the use of a
photosensitive monomer, loaded with
ceramic particles. This ceramic is
spread onto a working plane, in layer
thicknesses of 25 to 100 microns, and
a UV laser polymerizes the section
of the object being produced. Once
this portion of the object is solidified,
another layer of paste is spread on
top of the previous one; the laser
polymerizes the new layer, and then
glues the layers to one another. The
process is repeated until the final part
is obtained. After extraction of the
solidified part from the uncured ceramic
and cleaning off the unpolymerized
residues, the part is debound and
sintered to give the ceramic its final
properties and the definitive dimensions
of the manufactured object. Using
laser makes it possible to provide a
steady and constant output for perfect
polymerization, guaranteeing the most
homogeneous raw material possible. It
gives a better homogeneity of ceramic
and a higher density of the sintered
material for better resistance of the
finished part, and a more precise control
of dimensional changes of the part
during firing.

3DCeram is aware that, like any new

technology, ceramic 3D printing may
seem complicated. Therefore the
company offers a full range of services
to support its customers throughout the
development of their first projects, at
their own pace and according to their
needs. The Get-Started module includes
training on the 3D printing process and
how to use the printing unit. The Create
On Your Own module is dedicated to
upstream printing activities: teaching
the design office to think 3D, giving
guidelines for the creation of parts, and
training on how to use the software
suite required for the various stages of
printing, from CAD dedicated to 3D
printing to the design of part supports
required for 3D printing.
Thanks to CERAMAKER, customers
are in control of the confidentiality of
their project by monitoring the entire
production chain. They can get their first
parts (model) in a very short space of
time and approve the design: it becomes
easy to verify the feasibility of their
projects (testing a functional prototype),
to test out a new market without having
to take the risk of investing in expensive
equipment (tooling), and to start
mass production.

Ceramics Expo Explores

The Next Dimension
For these additive manufacturing pioneers, 3D
technological and market possibilities are endless

Robot-based 3D printing is a fact

of everyday business in the additive
manufacturing industry and one of the
areas of focus of the inaugural Ceramics
Expo and Conference, which will take
place April 28-30 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Publication Director, promises new

materials, new technology, that will be
better for the customer, faster, more
efficient in terms of productivity and
cost. We are already working on clever
3D printing ceramic.

One of the exhibitors will be

Massachusetts-based Viridis3D. Will
Shambley, the companys President and
CEO, is optimistic about the future:
I think that supply, demand and
awareness will increase as new machines
enter the market, new materials are
released and the experience of the service
providers increases.

We are currently working on machines

that have a bigger build envelope, and
we will launch a new machine this year,
Homa says. We are also working on
new materials and will have a stronger
focus on non-oxide materials. We
will also provide new material for
biomedical applications, a biodegradable
photopolymer.

The luxury and biomedical industries

are driving growth at 3DCeram, a
Limoges, France-based exhibitor. The
company also helps its customers use
ceramic applications of 3D technology
by providing training and maintaining
a hotline to optimize use of the
CERAMAKER process line.

Our primary focus over the last two

years has been laying the groundwork
for a very flexible, robot-based, 3D
printer, Shambley says. Weve also
been working on materials for the metal
casting, ceramics and composites tooling
markets. We anticipate releasing a
steady stream of new materials, robotics
platforms and development tools this
year, and every year following.

Vienna, Austria-based Lithoz GmbH is

working closely with the powder-injection
molding industry, which requires complex
parts in small quantities. We have also
started to look into new applications,
says marketing manager Monika Homa.
Biomedical applications often require
patient-specific implants or instruments.
The second driver is ceramic cores for
casting of turbine blades made of super
alloys in aerospace and industrial gas
turbines.

Research and development

The scope of emerging market
opportunities can be seen in each
companys areas of concentration in
R&D. Richard Gaignon, 3DCeram

Targeting world markets and

global partnerships
The companies share an interest in
strategic partnerships or joint ventures
that can strengthen their technologies
and market positions.
Homa describes Lithoz as open to any
kind of partnerships or joint venture, if it
is mutually beneficial.
Echoing her sentiment, Shambley says
Viridis3D will work with anybody who
has a good idea that is realistic and
represents a market opportunity.

www.ceramicsexpousa.com

Gaignon agrees: As time to market is an

essence of success, building a network
is a must.

Exhibiting innovation on a
world stage
All three exhibitors view Ceramics Expo
and Conference as an opportunity to

Dr Hans J Langer, Founder of

High-Tech Company, EOS, is New
Partner of Lithoz GmbH
Lithoz, the worlds first system provider for the additive manufacturing of high-performance
ceramics, has announced that Dr Hans J Langer, a highly respected partner, has invested
in the company. In his role as founder and CEO, he has made the high-tech company, EOS,
the world leader in the field of laser sintering; his participation in Lithoz underlines the high
potential of the companys technology

r Johannes Homa, CEO and

founder of Lithoz, announced
with some pride, In the past three
years Lithoz has managed to establish
a new and innovative production
method in the field of high-performance
ceramics. Through our partnership
with Dr Langer, our work finds special
recognition and our future growth
opportunities will increase significantly.
Crucial for Dr Langers participation
in Lithoz was the companys unique
technology. The LCM technology
makes it possible for the first time to
produce high-quality and fully functional
high-performance ceramic components
by using an additive manufacturing
process. High-performance ceramics
are often considered the material of the
future. Many companies are already
convinced of the economic and technical
advantages of the patented technology
of Lithoz.
Dr Hans J Langer is convinced: With
Lithoz we have found a competent
partner who will complement our
product range ideally in the future.
While EOS is the world leader in the
field of laser sintering of metals and
plastics, the technology of Lithoz will
open up a variety of new technical

applications in the field of highperformance ceramics. In my opinion

there is great potential for highperformance ceramics in aerospace and
medical applications.
Dr Johannes Patzer, CTO and
founder of Lithoz, agrees: Because
of their outstanding properties, highperformance ceramics are used
wherever other materials fail. This
applies, for example, to components
that are used in corrosive environments
or components that are exposed to
extreme tribological environments and
high temperatures.
High-performance ceramics are not only
used in the automotive and aerospace
industries, but also, increasingly
frequently, in medical technology.
Lithozs recently developed material,
LithaBone, is particularly suitable as
bone replacement material due to its
similarity to the mineral phase of human
bone and its osteoconductive properties.
In addition to EOS, the portfolio of
Dr Hans J Langer includes several
other important companies in the field
of additive manufacturing and laser
technology. As a business angel he also
supports the creation and development
of start-up companies in this area.

transformational fuel cells through a $5m
cooperative agreement funded by the
Advance Research Projects Agency
Energy (ARPA-E).

for a broader range of applications,

including low-cost distributed power
generation (and heating and cooling)
for homes and, for Microsoft a costshare partner for the project energyefficient data centers. Technological
advances made through this joint project
could even open the door for other
applications such as transportation.
Trans-Tech, based in Adamstown, MD,
will work with Redox and the University
of Maryland to ramp up commercial
production of the new cell materials.
The company will also work with Redox
to manufacture the improved fuel cells,
finding ways to reduce production
costs. By bringing a large manufacturer
like Trans-Tech into the development
process early, and working with fuel cells
produced using industrial processes,
the required time to market for new
generations of enhanced cells
will decrease.

Trans-Tech, based

Fuel cells or devices that convert

the chemical energy of a fuel source
into electrical energy are optimal for
distributed power generation systems,
which generate power close to where
it is used. Distributed generation
systems offer an alternative to the large,
centralized power generation facilities
or power plants that are currently
commonplace.
The goal of the joint project is to further
advance Redoxs high-performance fuel
cells and drive them to market-readiness

Low-cost, efficient fuel cells that cycle

on quickly, respond to varying loads and
operate at lower temperatures could
then be competitive with current energy
options, opening up new markets such as
providing electricity, along with heating
and cooling, to homes (with an 80%
efficiency), and even automobiles.
Trans-Tech has been the world leader
in technically advanced ceramics for
over 50 years, and offers a complete
line of high-quality, low-cost ceramicbased components for a number of
applications within the radio frequency
and microwave business sectors,
including wireless communications,
infrastructure, military, cable television,
broadband, circuit miniaturization and
the technical powder and ingot markets.

As a subsidiary of CUF, one of the
largest chemical companies in Europe,
Innovnano manufactures and supplies
industrial-scale quantities of its powders
from a purpose-built production center
in Coimbra, Portugal.
The ability to produce ceramics with an
intrinsic nanostructure can transform
their physical and chemical behavior.

in two and three-inch diameters. The
raw AZO powder has very small grain

the production of full density targets

minimize grain growth. The sputtering
targets therefore offer improved
thermal and mechanical properties for
creating high-performance coatings or
films such as transparent conducting
oxides (TCOs), which can be used to
produce highly efficient photovoltaic
cells. As such, AZO offers an effective
and lower-cost alternative to indium
