Pvalueapproach

ThePvalueapproachinvolvesdetermining"likely"or"unlikely"bydeterminingtheprobability
assumingthenullhypothesisweretrueofobservingamoreextremeteststatisticinthedirectionof
thealternativehypothesisthantheoneobserved.IfthePvalueissmall,saylessthan(orequalto),
thenitis"unlikely."And,ifthePvalueislarge,saymorethan,thenitis"likely."
IfthePvalueislessthan(orequalto),thenthenullhypothesisisrejectedinfavorofthealternative
hypothesis.And,ifthePvalueisgreaterthan,thenthenullhypothesisisnotrejected.
Specifically,thefourstepsinvolvedinusingthePvalueapproachtoconductinganyhypothesistest
are:
1.Specifythenullandalternativehypotheses.
2.Usingthesampledataandassumingthenullhypothesisistrue,calculatethevalueofthetest
statistic.Again,toconductthehypothesistestforthepopulationmean,weusethetstatistic
