2. OBJECTIVES:: Objective of the course is to disseminate the knowledge of the
basic of the subject to the students. Students will understand the fundamental o
f the subject and its application in mining of coal and mineral deposits.
3. COURSE TOPICS::
Physico-Mechanical Properties of Rocks:
Specific gravity, hardness, porosity, moisture content, permeability, thermal co
nductivity. Compressive, tensile and shear strengths. Modulus of elasticity. Poi
sson s ratio and triaxial strength, Swell index, slake durability, point load inde
x.
Stress and Strains:
Stresses in two and three dimensions. Stress tensors. Principal stresses. Stre
ss invariants. Displacements and strains. Mohr s circle. Stress-strain relationsh
ips. Equilibrium and compatibility equations. Stress and displacement around ope
ning.
Rockmass Classification Systems:
Rock quality designation (RQD), Rock mass rating (RMR) and Q-system- their appli
cations in structure support
In-situ Stresses:
Estimation of vertical and horizontal stress, horizontal in-situ stress. Stress
measurement techniques
Rheological Models and Time Dependent Properties of Rocks:
Theories of Rock Failure and post failure behaviour:
Griffith, Mohr-Coulomb, Hoek and Brown failure criteria. Post-failure behaviour
of rock
Design of underground structures:
Design of pillars, empirical formulas for pillar strength, stope design
Design of rock and dump slope:
Mode of failure, various methods for assessing factor of safety
Rock support and reinforcement:
Types of support, theory of roof bolting, roof support by empirical approach

tion of physico-mechanical properties of the rocks. They will understand the bas
ic of the rock mechanics. They will be able to design the mine structures such a
s pillars, support, slope, etc based on empirical relationship. They will be abl
e to do the subsidence prediction also.
