Simple Pure Sine Wave Inverter Circuit - 500 Watt Pure Sine
Posted by Swagatam Majumdar
The post explains how to make a pure sine wave inverter using ordinary components and yet get reasonably
outstanding results.
Satellite Tv Internet
Concealed Carry Guide
Senior Cell Phone Plans
The circuit basically uses a push pull topology through a couple of 24V batteries. The use of two 24V
batteries allows lower AH batteries to be incorporated with higher efficiency and wattage.
12V batteries can be also tried however the power output would be reduced to half.
Since a dual supply is used the connected transformer does not need to be a center tapped type, rather a
two wire ordinary transformer becomes suitable here.
The couple of designs shown below are all that would be required for implementing this simple pure
sine wave inverter circuit.
The first circuit is the basic sine wave generator which becomes the feeding input to the main sine wave
amplifier or the output stage.
The sine wave generator produces a pure sine wave output with the shown components at about 50Hz, for
other frequencies the 2.5K resistor may be altered, and tested in a simulator for fixing the desired results.
The sine generator circuit should be supplied with +/-12V, and not directly from the 24V battery supply as
that might damage the IC permanently.
The opamps used in this sine generator are from the IC TL072
The next diagram shows the output stage of the proposed simple pure sine wave inverter circuit. As can be
seen the design is not at all complicated.
All the involved components are standard, and easily available.
The mosfets are IRF540n and IRF9540n which compliment each other to produce the required push pull
effect over the attached transformer.
With a 0-24V/25amp transformer, and a couple of 24V batteries the circuit would be able to generate as
high as 600 watts of pure sine wave output at the relevant voltage.
The output across the right hand side opamp of the sine generator is to be connected across the input of the
second circuit for initializing the proposed operations.

Hello Luis,
Yes since it's a pure sine wave it's suitable for everything....

Thanks Girish,
the transformer here is 0-24V, but you can also use a 24-0-24V to make it a 48V transformer,
but the batteries will have to be 48V x 2nos...this will make the inverter 1KVA rated.
Reply
Hi Sam,
I am not sure about the efficiency because I haven't tried it yet.
8 to 9 volts in each half winding is in fact perfect for most of my designs as it would provide a
little higher than the rated 220V, so even at lower input voltages the output would stick
around 220V.

Thanking you

Hi Sam,
A transformer is a solid state device which is made up of metals.
It would get damaged only under conditions where it gets very hot, otherwise I don't think you
can damage an iron-cored transformer through any other means.
9V is just under 12V so it would make the transformer slightly warm, not much, moreover it's
the wattage consumption at the output that may be responsible for heating up the
transformer, if it's controlled appropriately, things would be all right.
You may incorporate my circuits which have a 555 pwm controller attached, this would give
you an option of controlling the RMS so that the transformer is not operated under incorrect
voltage parameters.

Hi Suneetha,
It is not a battery charger circuit, it's an inverter circuit, if you want to include a charger circuit,
you can attach the following circuit with it:
http://homemadecircuitsandschematics.blogspot.in/2012/11/high-current-transistor-tip36datasheet.html

Thanks!
Such inverters are not difficult to design except the output ferrite transformer which requires
specific calculations therefore becomes a fairly complex parameter to handle.
Due to this reason I haven't posted any of these circuits.

Use the "zoom" feature at the bottom right of the page...you would be able to figure out all the
details.

however please note that the design has not been verified practically.

helo jay,
it could be a tantalum or electrolytic, doesn't matter, but tantalum would be more accurate.
Reply
Hi Mr.Weizhuan,
This circuit is not what you are looking for. The above circuit makes use of iron-core bulky
transformer, so it won't suit your application.
Swagatam Majumdar
Simulators can be compared with a "blind man with a stick" so I never use them.
for the converter stage you can try this circuit:
http://homemadecircuitsandschematics.blogspot.in/2013/06/universal-ic-555-buck-boostcircuit.html
converted by Web2PDFConvert.com
For processing the above output you can try the following circuit using mosfets rated at 300V:
http://homemadecircuitsandschematics.blogspot.in/2013/05/full-bridge-1-kva-invertercircuit.html
Reply
Thanks Shiv,
You must first try a smaller version then upgrade it to higher ratings. You may start with the
following circuit:
http://homemadecircuitsandschematics.blogspot.in/2012/09/mini-50-watt-mosfet-invertercircuit.html
Reply
The above circuit works with two batteries, you can use two 12V batteries but the relative
power output will be 50% reduced than two 24V batteries.
Use the output from the green line, extreme right side.
for knowing the trafo amp apply 220V at its relevant winding, connect an AC ammeter set at
max current range on other side of the trafo for a few seconds until you get the required
current reading.

Dear Paul,
Ignore the red line, it's unused...
12-0-12 will work but the center should be left open and a 24V batt should be used.
If I get time i'll surely update the article with the parts list.
Swagatam Majumdar
Dear Paul,
You will not get any power from a 1.3amp trafo...use at least a 5 amp rated trafo.
Reply
Dear Michael,
The primary should be equal to the battery voltage, in the above figure it is 24V primary, and
220VV secondary(output)
Reply

tell the shopkeeper that you want a 0-24V/5amp, 220V transformer, this will be sufficient for
him to understand.

use opamps from the IC 324, and apply the supply across its pin11 (-) and pin4(+)
Reply
As mentioned in my previous comment, the supply needs to be applied to the supply pins of
the IC, the lines which are marked with ground symbols will go to the series point of the two
batteries, because in the above design we have used two batteries in series for getting the
required dual supply voltage.
Reply
Thanks,
(+)12 to pin4, (-)12V to pin11 of the IC324.
All the ground sysmbols are connected with the series wire of the two batteries.

Dear sir,
i have a 220vac primary transformer and secondary output is 18-0-18 vac at 40amps, can i use this on
your pure sine wave generator?
thanks...

Replies
Swagatam Majumdar
Dear Paul,
yes you can use it.
Reply
You will need a series battery connection as shown in the diagram for getting the required (+)
(-) and ground terminals, without this the circuit won't work.
Reply
Hi Paul,
you can use the 0-18V tap and connect it with the above circuit, and use two 24V batts in
series as indicated.

Swagatam Majumdar
if that would be possible, why would i suggest the second circuit? It's not possible.
Reply
Dear Paul,
LM324 has 4 opamps, you can use any two of them and wire them as per the given first
diagram above....
Please click the second diagram and magnify it, you will be able to see all the parts in the
diagram.
Reply
it will depend on your country specs...if it's 60Hz, then 59Hz will be OK
Reply
it's nonpolar, can be any low leakage type. IRF840 is 600v rated won't be a good match with
24v supplies. use irf540 instead.
converted by Web2PDFConvert.com
Reply
A simple BJT or mosfet stage won't understand a sine wave, it'll start conducting fully the
moment sine voltage exceeds 0.6V or 3V for mosfet.
Reply
you can try polarized types also, the negative lead should go towards ground symbol

all caps are rated at 50V, yes polyester will do.

Dear Paul,
yes ceramic caps will work
Reply
Dear Paul,
12V will do, but still you would require two of them...and also the output would become half of
what could be achieved using 24+24V batteries.
Reply
You will need three separate driver circuits for it, you may refer to the following article:
http://homemadecircuitsandschematics.blogspot.in/2013/10/three-phase-inverter-circuit.html

Dear Paul,
the mentioned components types are the most commonly available and standard, there no
easier replacements for these

Hi Edward, yes the circuit can be used for all day long if appropriate heasinking are provided
to the devices.
2.2nF will not do, 2.2uF could work, but it's better to use a 2uF cap[, you can use two 1uF in
parallel for making a 2uF cap.
Swagatam Majumdar
zinnaboy, you will have to make the circuit exactly as its presented, 2uF should be 2uF only,
any other value will not do, use two 1uF caps in parallel. This project is a difficult project and
is recommended for experts so please be cautioned.
Reply
you cannot use other values in place of the recommended values, so please use only what's
recommended in the diagram.
Reply
Hi Prasad,
Single battery will not work because the above design uses a single winding push-pull
configuration.
12-0-12v will work, keep the center taps shorted and unused and use 2nos 24v batts.
The above design is not a center tap type inverter so center tap cannot be used here.

red line goes nowhere. the green output is to be used for feeding the inverter.

biannz, don't try this circuit it's strictly not recommended for the newcomers, there are other
simpler versions you can try them instead
Reply
biannz, pure sine wave circuits are difficult and only recommended for expert hobbyists, if you
are confident you can go ahead wit the above circuit.
all pats should be exactly as given in the schematic, you cannot replace them with other
values, it will produce wrong results.
Reply
biannz, please check the datasheet of the IC and find out the Vdd(+) and Vss(-) pins of the
IC.
It will definitely need power from the battery otherwise it will never work.
Swagatam Majumdar
converted by Web2PDFConvert.com
yes, you can use two 12v batteries and connect them as shown
Reply
biannz, use non-polar capacitors for those. you can put two 1uF non-polar caps in parallel if
you are unable to get 2uF.
Swagatam Majumdar
biannz, the mosfets should not become hot if the cirucit is built correctly.
take the help of an expert electronic engineer who can schematics well.
how can a n-channel work for p-channel?? think before you ask.
0.22 are in fact for safeguarding the devices, so they are definitely not causing the heating
issues, it's surely due to some hidden fault in your design.
dont worry about the TL072 output, first make sure the inveter devices remain cool on switch.
Reply
bianzz, everything's correctly configured in the shown inverter circuit according to the layout.
follow it as it's shown...
Any modification would result in fire and smoke.

Reply
Hello Mohamed, confirm the upper circuit's waveform first.....it will surely show the production
of the sine waves, if correctly configured
Reply
the green output is the sine wave output, the red one is square wave.
No, you cannot use the sine output with any inverter's power stage...that will not yield
sinewave output...that's why only the above circuit has been recommended
Reply

no need of a separate power supply, you can extract the voltage from the inverter battery
using a 7812 IC
Reply
Harishvar, I am sure this circuit will work, if I were to make it, but I cannot guarantee this for
others, because it might require a thorough knowledge of all the aspects involved with the
design to achieve success..
Moreover this kind of circuits are not for the newcomers, if you get stuck somewhere you
would be clueless regarding the solution.
for an automatic battery circuit you can prefer the second design from the following post:
http://www.homemade-circuits.com/2011/12/how-to-make-simple-low-battery-voltage.html
Swagatam Majumdar
harishvar, You can begin with a simpler design as shown below, and if you succeed then
proceed step wise to upgrade it further...
http://www.homemade-circuits.com/2012/09/mini-50-watt-mosfet-inverter-circuit.html
useful....i am also trying to attach a 12v car battery.....if i were to attach this battery then sir
plzz give me a circuit charging car batteries......because charging car batteries would be
extremely dangerous if anything wrong happens then the whole battery may explode which
will cause a very huge damage....so plzz give me a safe circuit for charging the car batteries
and also for the(cd4047 circuit) can you give an another schematic because i cuoldnt find
where the + and the - terminals of the battery are coming from.......i would really be thankful
to you if u give me another schematic for the cd4047 inverter circuit.....and also plzz tell that
using a car battery would be safe or not......because i am very scared to use it.....
Swagatam Majumdar
harishvar, if you are confident with your knowledge and skills then you can definitely go
ahead and try the circuit...
For an automatic battery charger circuit you may build the second circuit from the following
