HELPFUL HINTS
The electronic joystick has a different feel than
the conventional mechanical knobs and a few minutes practice will enhance your understanding of its
advantages. Practice fine tip movements by moving
the joystick small amounts and pausing to observe
on the monitor the time required for the electronics
to respond.
Maximize articulation capability by minimizing the
coiling of unused insertion tube length. Bends in the
insertion tube decrease the effectiveness of the pushpull steering cable mechanism.
Tip articulation can generally be increased by
straightening the probe to its full length, holding the
distal end of stiff insertion tube (just before articulation section), and shaking it vigorously to loosen
clumped lubricant throughout the tube length.
Do not stress the articulation section during this
operation!
Be sure to notice the view orientation advantage of
the monitor compared to an eyepiece. Regardless of
how the probe has been rotated or turned, forward
movement of the joystick always directs the view
on the monitor up. Similarly, a backward movement
always looks further down, left looks left and right
looks right (Up/Down is reversed when using a side
view tip). Understanding this consistent orientation of
the joystick to monitor images makes manipulation of
the tip much easier than it has been in the past.
Get longer life from your Processor/Light Source lamp
by avoiding frequent turning on and off.
If the probe ever becomes difficult to insert into its
storage tube, clean out the tube and lubricate the
probe with a light silicone oil. This problem can
normally be prevented by cleaning the probe before
storage each time it is used.
When using the detachable lens optics, always
keep them clean and dry. See Cleaning in the
Maintenance section.
Clean the window in the tip section (camera head)
frequently. Often a fuzzy image is due to dirt on the
window.
Articulating Section / Insertion Tube: Avoid pointed
objects that can penetrate the tubes outer sheath.
Return probe for repair at the first sign of penetration.
NOTE: Articulating Section: Pulling or twisting this
section can separate it from the insertion tube. Return
the probe for repair at the first sign of separation. Also,
reduce the possibility of damage to the articulating tip
by repositioning it to a neutral, forward position with the
Home feature before withdrawing it from equipment
or storing the probe in the case.

The VideoProbe XL PRO contains a fixed focus optical
system which is designed with a large depth of field and
does not require operator focus. Depth of field, field of
view and direction of view can be varied by selecting the
appropriate optical tip for the probe. See APPENDIX C
section for listing of all available optical tips, as well as
definitions of the terms depth of field and field of view.
Caution
Damage to the tip attachment mechanism may occur if
the VideoProbe is operated without a probe tip or protective headguard in place.
Notice
Do not use probe tips from earlier generation VideoProbe
products on the XL PRO unless their part number is
listed in Appendix C, as they will produce poorer quality
images compared to XL PRO tips.

HOW TO OPERATE THE XL PRO

Overview
The VideoProbe XL PRO is equipped with the latest
in video borescope technology. A fiber-optic bundle
illuminates the inspection area with light generated by
a new state-of-the-art 50 watt Welch Allyn Solarc
So- arc
lamp in the Processor/Light Source (PLS). A miniature
camera assembly in the VideoProbes Tip Section converts the optical image into an electronic image. This
image is carried back through the probe and displayed
on the color LCD, which is built into the probe
hand-piece.
WARNING: PROBE IS GROUNDED! Do not allow
the Insertion Tube, Probe Tip Section, or working
channel tools to come into contact with a source
of electrical current/voltage. Doing so may result
in personal injury or permanent damage to the
VideoProbe or inspected equipment.
Different models of the XL PRO contain controls and
support functions that are unique to each model. This
section describes the operation of all functions available
in all models of the XL PRO product line. The XL PRO
models that support each feature are listed in parentheses after each feature. Refer to Features and Benefits
by Model Number for a summary of the functions
available in each model of the XL PRO.

PROCESSOR/LIGHT SOURCE (PLS)

BASED CONTROLS
Power On/Off System Power Control:
(All VideoProbe models)
Access

Switch on Front Panel of PLS

Operation This switch both powers the system and

ignites the arc lamp. To prolong lamp life,
minimize switching on and off. Also, the
lamp requires a cool down period of
approximately 10 seconds after shut-off,
before being turned on again.
NOTES:

If the PLS is turned from on to off, and

then immediately back to on, the lamp
may not ignite.
arc lamp requires
The Solarc
Soapproximately 90 seconds to reach
full intensity and true color
temperature from a cold start.

Brightness Control Probe Illumination:

(All VideoProbe models)
Access

Knob on Front Panel of PLS

Operation When the Brightness Control knob is in the

Auto position, the system automatically
26

adjusts the cameras gain and electronic

shutter parameters for optimum image
brightness under most conditions.
The lamp shutter is set for maximum light
output when the knob is set to Auto.
When the knob is rotated clockwise from
its detent Auto position to Manual, the
image brightness goes from maximum to
minimum by initially setting the gain to
maximum, and then by attenuating the
gain and the mechanical light vane. Turn
control fully clockwise for minimal light
output before changing optical tips. The
Manual position may be preferred under
certain conditions such as an inspection of
highly reflective surfaces.

Volume Control Internal Speaker:

(PXLD, PXLA, PXLM: PLS500D-A and PLS500D-C)
Access

Knob on Front Panel of PLS

Operation Rotation of knob controls volume of

speaker built into PLS. Voice annotation
(.wav files) stored previously with captured images may be played back through
the speaker. This knob does not affect the
signal level of the audio output present on
the RCA jack.

Audio Output RCA Jack

(PXLD, PXLA, PXLM: PLS500D-A and PLS500D-C)
Access

RCA jack on front panel of PLS500D.

audio signal on the PLS500D audio output
jack (see Setup Menu Audio).

Video Inputs Composite and S-Video:

(PXLD, PXLA, PXLM: PLS500D-A and PLS500D-C)
Access

Connectors Located on Front Panel of PLS

Operation Connect an external sources Video Out

via composite or S-video cable to the
PLS500Ds composite (BNC) or S-Video
Video In connector. Most image storage
and annotation functions which may be
performed on images captured by the XL
PRO may also be performed on video input
from external devices (such as cameras).
Selection of the external source of video
information to be displayed and or stored
is determined by automatic sensing
27

and switching. When an external input

is detected, the PLS500D automatically
switches and it will switch to the next
input if another is added. The last input
connected to Video In will be displayed.

Keyboard Input External Keyboard:

(PXLD, PXLA, PXLM: PLS500D-A and PLS500D-C)
Access

VIDEOPROBE XL PRO HAND-PIECE

CONTROLS
The hand-piece of the more advanced feature models
of the XL PRO product line contains additional buttons
which directly control features, or which control onscreen menu functions which are not present in the
basic models.

Joystick Tip Articulation:

(All VideoProbe models)
Access

Joystick Movement

Operation An electronic joystick points the viewing

tip of the probe right where you need it.
Looking at the monitor image, push the
joystick forward to steer the view higher,
backward to view lower, right to view
to the right and left to view to the left.
Regardless of how you have rotated the
probe or the path the probe has taken
through your inspection, the movement of
the joystick always has the same effect on
the image. You need only watch the monitor and steer the joystick in the direction
you want to see.
Option

Coarse/Fine Option: (PXLD, PXLA,

PXLM) An option is available in the Setup
Menu which allows the articulation to be
set for coarse or fine tracking response to
joystick movements. (See Setup Menu
Steering Control).
(Up/Down movement is reversed when
using a side view tip adapter).
All-Way Articulation

Figure 14

Note: The VideoProbe XL PRO is designed with a high

degree of tip articulation. However, as with all flexible
borescopes, the degree of articulation will vary with the
number of bends placed in the insertion tube. You can
maximize the articulation by preventing unnecessary
coils or bends in the insertion tube during operation.

29

Joystick Zoom Mode Operation

The user can select between two different joystick
operating modes for the system operation while the
zoom function is activated.
Usage

Pan-Only Operation: Whenever the ZOOM

function is activated, the camera continues to view a full image, but a zoomed
subset of the target image is displayed.
Moving the joystick will allow other
portions of the image to be viewed by
electronically panning the zoomed view
throughout the target image. The probe
tip will not articulate when the joystick is
moved during pan-only.
Steer-Only Operation: Whenever the
ZOOM function is activated, moving
the joystick will cause the probe tip to
articulate.

Operation The VideoProbe will automatically operate in the users choice of pan-only or
steer-only mode whenever the ZOOM
feature is activated. The operational mode
is selected using the setup menu. (see
Setup Menu Steering Zoom Mode).

Steer/Stay Button

Operation The STEER-and-STAY buttons activate

a lock function that holds the probe tip
(camera) in a chosen position.
When this mode is activated, both STEER/
STAY buttons will illuminate.
Moving the joystick while the Steer/Stay
mode is active allows for slower articulation, making fine articulation easier.
The tip will hold the last position directed
by the joystick until either the joystick is
moved again or the Steer/Stay mode is
turned off.
This mode can be turned off by pressing the STEER/ STAY button again, or by
pressing the HOME
button.
Note: The STEER/STAY mode will turn
off after 15 consecutive minutes without
joystick movement.
IMPORTANT!
Never turn system power off with tip articulated.
Assure the tip is straight. Not doing so may result
in damage to the articulation mechanism when
the insertion tube is removed from the object
being inspected.
Be sure the STEER/STAY mode is turned off prior
to removing the probe from your equipment.

Image Storage

Overview (PXLD, PXLA, PXLM: PLS500D-A and

PLS500D-C))

The system stores images in folders in either flash

memory, or floppy disk. A default folder name of
Main is initially created by the XL PRO. New folders
may be created using the file manager menu (see
File Manager Folders).
Each image is placed in a folder with an image file
name based on date, i.e., YYMMDDXX.BMP or .JPG,
where YY is year, MM is month, DD is day, and .bmp
and .jpg are file formats.
File names for shadow and stereo images saved with
measurement data will start with the letter M for
measurement in place of the first year, i.e.,
MYMMDDXX.BMP.
X is a letter, automatically entered in sequence from
AA to ZZ that differentiates files stored on the
same day.
The system saves the last filename used and recalls
it at power up so the next file saved on that day has
the correct name.
The saved image contains information displayed on
the screen at the time the image was saved (i.e.,
time, date, zoom level, measurement result, measurement cursors, accuracy index, measurement tip
used and shadow position).
Images may be saved with our without measurement
data, using MENU, SAVE or without measurement
data using Quick Save by holding down the FREEZE
ENTER button.
Storage Media
Images captured by the VideoProbe may be stored in
the internal system Flash memory, on a floppy disk,
or on a SmartMedia card in a FlashPath adapter.
Images can be copied between internal memory and
a FlashPath adapter or floppy disk located in the PLS.
Note: Maximum allowable Smart Media Card is 32MB.
Storage Capacity
The number of images that can be stored in internal
memory or on a floppy disk or SmartMedia card
depends on the image content and the video format
option selected from the SETUP MENU. See following
tables for typical storage capacities.

Long Exposure Mode Options:

A video image frame is formed by alternating lines of video information from two
separate fields of video. A video field has
1/2 the resolution of a full video frame.
In Long Exposure mode, only one field
of video is displayed, thus, providing an
advantage minimizing picture jitter when
there is motion in the target to be inspected, or if the VideoProbe tip cannot be held
stationary during an inspection.

Auto or Manual
Usage

AUTO control allows the embedded computer to control the exposure time of the
camera. In this mode, the computer allows
the electronic shutter to remain open until
the acquired image has a brightness level
which matches a factory preset value. The
maximum exposure time in auto mode is
approximately 3 seconds.
MANUAL control allows the operator to
directly control the electronic shutter of
the camera - in this mode, a total exposure time of 8 seconds can be obtained.

Operation In AUTO mode, pressing the EXPOSURE CONTROL button will increase or
decrease the target brightness value the
computer is attempting to achieve through
its control of the exposure time.
In MANUAL mode, pressing the
EXPOSURE CONTROL button allows
the operator to directly control the
exposure time of the camera.

MEASUREMENT OPERATIONS
General Feature Summary
(PXLA, PXLM: PLS500D-A and PLS500D-C)
The XL PRO VideoProbe supports three different types of
measurement operations:
ShadowProbe ShadowProbe measurements involve
Measurements the use of ShadowProbe tips which
project a shadow onto a target. Using
triangulation geometry based on the
shadow location, measurements may
be made on the target.
StereoProbe StereoProbe measurements involve
Measurements the use of StereoProbe tips which
capture stereoscopic images of a
target. The XL PRO processor uses a
triangulation geometry methodology to
perform measurements on the target.
Comparison Comparison measurements rely on the
Measurements dimensions of a known object in the
field of view or introduced into the
field of view to calculate other dimensions.
Not all measurement types are available on all models
or probe diameters. Refer to the product specification
section of this manual for product versions which
support the various measurement methods.

Measurement Accuracy

CAUTION NOTE:
The accuracy of measurements performed by XL PRO
Systems cannot be guaranteed by Everest VIT. The
accuracy of any measurement is dependant on the ability of an operator to capture a quality image and the
skill of the operator to accurately place measurement
cursors.
In the case of stereo measurements, the ability to verify
that the XL PROs automatic matching of the cursors
placed by the operator is accurate is also critical to
achieving accurate measurement results.

Typical Accuracy
Measurement accuracy of 95% or
better can be achieved by a trained
user of the ShadowProbe or
StereoProbe measurement systems
when the measurements are made
within the systems specified
measurement conditions
(see ShadowProbe Accuracy and
StereoProbe Accuracy sections of this
manual).
Measurement results are only valid for
measurements made in air (contact
factory for measurements performed
in liquid environments).
70

Maximizing Accuracy

Magnification is among the most

important elements in the
measurement accuracy.
The more an object fills the screen, the
greater its magnification and more precisely you can place the cursors used
to measure objects.

Measurement Accuracy Verification

It is recommended that measurement

accuracy verification tests be
performed before and after measurements are performed in order to
confirm the accuracy of the
StereoProbe and ShadowProbe
measurement system.
Refer to Appendix E for instructions
on how to perform measurement verification tests using the NIST traceable
measurement verification block which
is shipped with every PXLM system.

PROVIEW

ShadowProbe Measurement System

Shadow Measurements Overview

There are seven types of shadow-based measurements

that may be performed by the XL PRO PXLM series.
1. Distance
5. Area
2. Skew
6. Multi-Segment Length
3. Depth
7. Circle Gauge
4. Point-to-Line
A shadow measurement is made with a frozen image or
a recalled image taken from the shadow measurement
screen, or an image saved as a measurement image.
For maximum accuracy, move the shadow as close
to the left side of the screen as possible (the shadow
moves left as the probe approaches the surface), and
place the shadow line and cursors as accurately as
possible. Measurement can be made even if the tip is
so close to a surface that the image is somewhat out of
focus. In this case, features must be sharp enough so
the cursors can be placed accurately.
ShadowProbe The accuracy of measurements which
Accuracy
can be made by a trained user using
the shadow measurement methods
may be obtained by referring to the
Accuracy Index in Figure 65.
The Accuracy Index value is an
indication of the amount of magnification which was used during the
measurement. If a defect was measured with an Accuracy Index of 7.0,
that defect would be shown 7 times
larger than actual size on the
XL PRO hand-piece LCD.
The index gives the minimum magnification of the area being measured as
viewed on the 5-in. LCD.
The Accuracy Index values can be
shown on the screen during shadow
measurements (use SETUP MENU to
enable this feature).
A warning indication that a measurement is being performed using
an Accuracy Index below a pre-set
threshold can be enabled from the
SETUP MENU SET MINIMUM
INDEX.
To calculate magnification on monitors
larger or smaller than the 5-in. LCD,
divide LCD magnification (the Accuracy
Index) by 5 and multiply by the diagonal of the other monitor in inches.
Important: ShadowProbe measurements tips, unlike
standard optical tips, are factory calibrated for use with
specific probes and will not measure accurately if used
with other measurement probes. Tips are matched to
probes by serial number engraved in the side of the tip
and listed on the probe plug label, and calibration data
is stored in memory in the probe.
72

Shadow Tip Identification

Figure 33

Important: The small O-ring on the probe tip ensures

the stable seating of the measurement tips for optimum
accuracy during measurements. The O-ring should be
checked each time the measurement tip is used, and
replaced if missing or excessively worn.

Verifying Shadow Tip

Whenever a shadow measurement is selected

from the MEASUREMENT TYPE menu, the XL
PRO will allow the user to verify that the correct
tip is selected for the measurement.
The first time a shadow measurement is performed after power-up, a warning screen is
displayed, and the system asks the user to
insure that the tip installed on the videoprobe is
the tip selected among those calibrated (listed
by direction of view, color code and serial number) for that VideoProbe. (Note: Warning screen
can be disable via the Setup Menu User
Prompts. Refer to page 66.)

Figure 34

ShadowProbe Measurement Overview

ShadowProbe measurement is a linear measurement
of points on a flat surface which is perpendicular to
the optical axis of the probe (Figure 35). The shadow
will indicate this viewing condition by appearing as an
unbroken vertical line that remains vertical even when
the probe is rotated.
In this viewing condition, measurements can be taken
anywhere in the frozen image.
In general, measuring on or near the shadow line
reduces the risk of error caused by a non-perpendicular
viewing angle.

ShadowProbe Skew Measurements

Overview
A Skew measurement is a linear measurement of an
object on a surface that is at a skewed angle (nonperpendicular) to the optical axis of the probe (Figure 38).
Usually the shadow will appear sloped (nonvertical),
indicating that the surface distance from the probe (and
therefore magnification) is not constant throughout the
image.
From a skewed viewing angle, measurements can only
be made along the shadow, so the shadow must be
aligned to the object to be measured before the image
is frozen.
Skew Measurement

Figure 38

Example Skew Measurement

Figure 39

ShadowProbe Skew Measurements

Operation
Usage

A sloped shadow means the viewing tip is

not perpendicular to the surface, therefore
height above the surface and magnification will change across the image.
Tip-to-target reference distance is only
known on the shadow, so place it on the
object before freezing the image.
Maximize accuracy by using the greatest magnification (filling as much of the
screen as possible with the image), getting as close to perpendicular as possible,
marking the limits measured precisely
with the cursors, and accurately centering
the cursors on the shadow line.

Operation Press FREEZE to freeze the image.

Press MEASURE and use the joystick to
select SHADOW, SKEW.

Select
the appropriate tip and press ENTER.
76

Two cursors will appear.

Move the cursors with the joystick to mark
the features to be measured along the
shadow.
The cursors must be accurately centered
on the shadow.
The distance between the cursors and
the Accuracy Index (if activated) will be
constantly displayed.

ShadowProbe Depth Measurement

Overview
A Depth measurement measures the height or depth of
an object by determining the distances from the probe
to the upper and lower surfaces and calculating the difference. The viewing angle should be perpendicular to
the surface plane (Figure 40) or the resulting measurement will be a diagonal depth rather than a true vertical
depth. When the surface planes are perpendicular, the
shadow will appear vertical in the image and remain
vertical even when the probe is rotated. The shadow
will break to the left to indicate a raised surface or to
the right to indicate a recessed surface.
Depth measurements can only be made along the shadow, so align the shadow vertically across the change in
contour before freezing the image. When marking the
depth or height to be measured, place the point cursors
along the center of the shadow on the lower and upper
surfaces near the break.

ShadowProbe Depth Measurements

Operation
Usage

A Depth measurement evaluates the difference in height between two points to

indicate vertical changes due to wear,
misalignment and other causes.
The shadows shape indicates surface
contours, because it bends over surface
irregularities, e.g., it breaks sharply right
when a surface falls rapidly away from the
tip, and bends gradually to the right for
gentle slopes away from the tip.

Operation Make Depth measurements by locating

the object with the shadow lying on the
area to be measured. If the shadow is
not visible, move the probe closer until it
appears. Keep the probe perpendicular (a
vertical shadow) to the main surface.
Press FREEZE to freeze the image.

Stereo Measurement Accuracy

Overview

The accuracy of measurements performed on

StereoProbe systems is dependant on operator skill
level, captured image quality, and magnification (displayed as the Accuracy Index value on-screen) of the
object being measured.

Stereo Measurement Range

The usable range for performing stereo measurements

extends out to a magnification Accuracy Index of 2.5
(a typical tip to target distance of 30mm). For more
accurate measurements, it is recommended that measurements be performed with an Accuracy Index of 4.5
or greater (a typical tip to target distance of 15mm or
closer).

Stereo Measurement Processing

Match Strength
During stereo measurements, the computer system in
the XL PRO will calculate a matching cursor position for
each cursor placed by the user. For every match point
created by the XL PRO computer, a (MATCH STRENGTH)
numerical value between 0 and 5 will be generated.
Whenever possible place cursors such
that a match strength of 3 or greater is
displayed.
In order to achieve higher match strength
on selected targets, it may be necessary
to freeze another image with slightly
different illumination, or more image
details shown in the scene.
You should always verify that the computer generated matched cursor appears to
be placed properly even when a match
strength of <5> is indicated, and
especially when low match strength
values are indicated.
Accuracy The accuracy of measurements which can
be made by a trained user on an image
which is of acceptable quality to perform
stereo measurements using the
StereoProbe measurement methods may
be obtained by referring to the Accuracy
Index tables in Figures 66 and 67.
The most accurate measurements can be
made when the target is perpendicular to
the probe tip.
A match position which is off by just one
pixel position can have a significant
impact on the measurement result.
The Accuracy Index value is an indication
of the amount of magnification which was
used during the measurement. If a defect
was measured with an Accuracy Index of
7.0, that defect would be shown 7 times
larger than actual size on the XL PRO
hand-piece LCD.
The index gives the minimum magnification of the area being measured as viewed
83
on the 5-in. LCD.

The Accuracy Index values can be shown

on the screen during stereo measurement
(use SETUP MENU to enable this feature).
A flashing warning indication that a
measurement is being performed using an
Accuracy Index below a pre-set threshold
can be enabled from the SETUP MENU
SET MINIMUM INDEX.
To calculate magnification on monitors
larger or smaller than the 5-in. LCD, divide
LCD magnification (the Accuracy Index) by
5 and multiply by the diagonal of the other
monitor in inches.

Calibrated StereoProbe Tips

Important: Measurements tips, unlike optical tips,
are calibrated for use with specific probes and will not
measure accurately if used with other measurement
probes which have not been calibrated to those tips.
Tips are matched to probes by serial number engraved
on the side of the tip, and calibration data is stored in
memory in the probe.
Important: The small O-ring on the probe tip ensures
the stable seating of the measurement tips for optimum
accuracy during measurements. The O-ring should be
checked each time the measurement tip is used, and
replaced if missing or excessively worn.

Selecting Stereo Tip

Whenever a stereo measurement is selected
from the MEASUREMENT TYPE menu, the
XL PRO will prompt the user to verify the correct tip is installed for the measurement.

The first time a stereo measurement is performed after power-up, a message is displayed
to remind the user of the importance of proper
tip identification. (Note: Warning screen can be
disable via the Setup Menu User Prompts.
Refer to page 66.)
While performing stereo measurement, the
selected tip may be verified or changed by

Comparison Measurements
(PXLA, PXLM)
There are five types of Comparison measurements that
may be performed by a PXLA or PXLM series XL PRO.
1. Length
2. Point-to-Line
3. Area

4. Multi-Segment Length
5. Circle Gauge

Comparison measurements use the size of a known

object (often set in place by the manufacturer, or
introduced with the probe) to measure other objects
in the same view and plane.
Such measurements are made using zoomed or
unzoomed frozen or recalled images.
Although they are less accurate than shadow or stereo measurements, they are useful if you do not have
a shadow or stereo tip, need to measure further away
than a shadow or stereo will allow, cannot place a
shadow where you want it, cannot obtain adequate
stereo match strength, or want to check the approximate size of many items quickly.
Comparison measurements begin by establishing a
known dimension as a reference scale.
In the recalled or frozen image, cursors are placed
across a known dimension and that dimension is
entered into the system.
The cursors can then be moved anywhere in the
image to display the point to point dimensions (video
caliper), point to line measurements, or a circle of
known diameter may be placed anywhere on the
screen (circle gauge).

Use the process specified in Changing the Arc
Lamp to access the lamp.
2. If you do not have an image at all and the green
power indicator lamp is lit ...
Verify the probe plug is properly seated and latched
(see SETUP section).
Verify the arc lamp is on, and there is adequate
light transmission by adjusting the light control
knob to a higher level or to the Auto position.
Point the probe toward a bright light and see if
image appears. If still no image, stop and call
Service Center (see SERVICE section). If image
appears, the problem is associated with lamp
operation.
Verify image is available on an external monitor, if
possible. If an external monitor is available, connect
the monitors VIDEO IN or S-VIDEO IN to the
PLS VIDEO OUT or S-VIDEO OUT connector, and
verify image. Call Service Center (see SERVICE
section).

Tip Articulation (Steering)

1. If you have an articulation problem and no image, go
to Image section above.
2. If you have a steering problem, but have an image:
Press the STEER/STAY button once or twice to
verify steer/stay mode is not activated.
On models equipped with a freeze mode, press the
EXIT button to verify articulation is not disabled
in the current screen.

it vigorously to free lubricant. Do not pull on the
tip or articulating section when doing this!
Cycle power off/on. If no articulation, call Service
Center (see SERVICE section).

Freeze Frame
1. If the Freeze Frame function does not work, or the
image locks in a frozen state ...
Turn system power off, wait 30 seconds, turn it
back on. If problem persists, call Service Center
(see SERVICE section).
2. If frozen image jitters, the probe tip was moving
when image was frozen. Press the FREEZE key to
unfreeze image, and press again to freeze once more.

Stereo and Shadow Measurements

1. If you have an inaccurate shadow measurement ...
Ensure the serial number of the installed tip is listed
on the probe plug label and it is properly selected
when performing measurements.
Verify that the O-ring is in good condition and in
place on the probes tip (camera head assembly) for
proper fit of measurement tip.
99

Move the probe tip as close as possible to the

target in order to minimize tip-to-target distance
which maximizes magnification.
Ensure that the accuracy which you are expecting
is within the capabilities of the product by referring
to the ShadowProbe and StereoProbe Accuracy
Index Charts.
Measure the target contained in the verification block
periodically to ensure that no damage has occurred that
may reduce measurement accuracy. Each tip should
be verified for accuracy. Refer to Appendix E for the
instructions on the use of the measurement verification
block.

ShadowProbe Measurements
If you having difficulty in obtaining accurate
ShadowProbe measurements ...
Ensure you are using the correct type of shadow
measurement (see MEASUREMENT section).
Ensure that the probe is perpendicualr to the target
for all but SKEW measurements.
Check for proper shadow orientation and cursor
placement for type of measurement performed.

StereoProbe Measurements
If you having difficulty in obtaining accurate
Stereo measurements ...
Ensure that you have the correct tip by color
description and serial number installed on the probe
and selected during the measurement process.
Obtain an alternate frozen image to be measured
with enhanced details and reduced glare. Enhance
image details through modification of image
brightness controls located on the probes handpiece and lamp brightness control located on the
processor/light source.
Position the object to be measured near the center
of the screen.
Matching point should be correct within 1 pixel.
If you cannot clearly see where the match point
should be, select a different point or capture the
image from a different position which better reveals
details to allow better matching.
If measuring with little detail, use shadow.
Dont measure along smooth lines because its difficult to differentiate between points on the line. Use
shadow for measurements on smooth, straight lines.
Dont choose points in areas of significant glare as
it may appear in different positions on the two sides
causing false matches. Very small glare speckles
can be used.
Try to keep cursors 15-20 pixels or more from edge
distortion can degrade accuracy near edges.
Use the ZOOM window feature to most accurately
place the measurement cursors.

APPENDIX E
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF
MEASUREMENT VERIFICATION BLOCK

Overview

Every PXLM series ShadowProbe and StereoProbe

system is shipped with a measurement verification
block.
The measurement verification block is an instrument used to verify the measurement accuracy of a
StereoProbe or ShadowProbe measurement system.
The measurement verification device contains
optical measurement targets whose accuracy is
traceable to the United States National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) measurement
standards.
Every measurement verification device is supplied
with a certificate of conformance (C of C) and a
calibration schedule.
May be used to verify the accuracy of ShadowProbe
or StereoProbe systems

Measurement Verification Block Part Numbers:

VER2400A is used for 3.9 mm systems
VER2500A is used for 5.0 mm systems
VER2600A is used for 6.1 mm systems
VER2700A is used for 7.3 mm systems
Measurement Verification Block

Figure 68

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF THE

MEASUREMENT VERIFICATION BLOCKS

Overview

This measurement verification block contains one

side and one forward view chamber which contain
0.100 0.0002 inch (2.5400 0.00508 mm) calibrated test targets.

Instructions

Install a shadow tip or stereo tip on the XL PRO.

Insert the tip into the appropriate forward or side view
test chamber (the color code on the chamber will
match the tip color code).
Perform a distance type shadow measurement, or a
length type stereo measurement.
The inner circle in the image is the 0.100 inch calibrated target. Place the cursor cross-hairs across the
surface of the target as shown in figure 69 or figure
70.
Verification Block Test Target using ShadowProbe

Figure 69

Verification Block Test Target using a StereoProbe

Test Results

Figure 70

An experienced user will be able to achieve a measurement of 0.100 0.005 inches (2.54 0.127
mm) or better.
If your measurement does not fall within the above
limits:
- Verify that you have chosen the proper shadow tip
or stereo tip serial number as indicated on the tip
selection screen.
- Verify that the tip is fully seated on the probe, and
that the O-ring is in place on the probe. If you continue to obtain measurements outside of the tolerance limits, contact the Everest VIT service department for re-calibration of your XL PRO.
127

APPENDIX F
Chemical Compatibility
Chemical compatibility refers to the probes ability to
come into contact with various liquid substances and
not be damaged. There are far too many different liquids in the industrial environment for Everest VIT to test
each one, so customers must determine for themselves
if the probe is compatible with their specific chemicals.
However, Everest VIT has tested the VideoProbe XL PRO
to several of the more common substances and reports
the results in the hope that it might be of assistance.
Whatever the liquid, duration of exposure should be
minimized and the probe cleaned after each use before
storage. See manual for cleaning instructions. (Note:
that the VideoProbe XL PRO is not certified for
operation in explosive environments.)

As a general rule of thumb, if the liquid is relatively

clear and safe for your hand, then it is probably safe for
the probe. Conversely, if it is not safe for your hand, it is
probably not safe for the probe.

128

APPENDIX G
Creating a LOGO Bitmap File
The XL PRO Digital, Advanced Digital, and Measurement
models allow a bitmap image file to be displayed on
live images, and stored with captured images. Typically
this bitmap image will be a corporate logo.
The bitmap image which may be used by the XL PRO
must not exceed 200x200 pixels, and must be
16 colors.
Most graphics programs (such as Microsoft MS-Paint)
allow images to be saved with the size and color attributes required by the XL PRO.
LOGO file requirements:
200x200 pixels or smaller
16 color
File name must be logo.bmp
Bitmap file must be Microsoft Windows compatible.
Note: The custom green background color comprised of
Red 128
Green 128
Blue 0
will appear as transparent when included in a logo bitmap shown on the XL PRO.
