(10 x 2 = 20 marks)
11. What are the qualities of tool to be considered to cut or shear off the metals?
12. What is the purpose of chip breaking?
13. What are the methods of evaluating Machinability?
14. What is the effect of change in rake angle in a single point cutting tool while machining?
15. In the current scenario why there is always a requirement for improving the cutting tool materials and geometry.
16. What are the factors are to be considered while grinding a drill
17. Why is coarse grain and open structured wheel is preferred for stock removal grinding?
18. While machining is going on in a CNC machine, the operator would like to change the feed rate to 120% of the initial value
given in the program. Is it possible to do this without stopping the machine and changing the program?

19. What is the effect of backlash of a ball screw in CNC machine and how it is going to be compensated?
20. While drilling a 20mm hole in an engine block the drill bit got broken and half the bit was struck strongly in the hole. How to
remove the drill bit without causing damage to the engine block.
PART C
(70 marks)
21. A complex machine component made of martensite has to be machined. When attempted to machine the operator reports
frequent tool wear / breakage and says it is close to impossible to machine martensite steel. Help us resolve this issue.
Hint: a) Do not consider any improvement or change of the cutting tool
b) Work with material property.
(6 marks)
22. Mild steel bars of 50 mm diameter are to be turned over a length of 160 mm with a depth of cut of 1.5 mm, feed of 0.2
mm/rev at 230 rpm by HSS tool. If the tool life equation is given by, VT0.2 f0.3 d0.12 = 50, determine how many components
may be turned before regrinding of the tool.
(8 marks)
23. Explain a suitable process for the mass manufacture of gears used in wrist watches. Justify your selection with relevant
sketches.
(6 marks)
24. Write the NC part program for the given component to be machined in a CNC Turning center.
Hint: 1) Assume the blank size, work speed, feed rate and depth of cut and the origin of the tool appropriately.
2) Use Absolute Co-ordinate system
(10 marks)
25. Explain the significance of honing of the engine cylinder bore. Discuss how the finish is achieved through different stages
with the kinematics of the honing machine.
