TOPIC: Comparison of Malvolio and two other characters in Twelfth Night , to

show whether the play consist of one-sided characters only, or if they have a blend
of qualities that an audience can both accept and/or reject.

The characters in the play Twelfth Night written by William Shakespeare

distinctive characteristics. Characters also have different aspects and preform
different. Twelfth Night is classified as a festive play and the characters gives us a
special mood and a flavor that is mixed with critical views to fantasies and
illusions. Some of the characters are well rounded, while others are flat. The
audience can see that the characters have a blend of qualities that is reveal in time
of the play.
To begin, Malvolio is the miserable puritan who always exorcizes his killjoy
powers over Sir Toby Belch and other individuals in the house except for Olivia.
Malvolio seem to be a strait-laced, simple man to Olivia but the other side of him
is revealed when he is made a poseur by a prank perpetrated by Maria. The
audience can accept that Malvolio has a blend of qualities which comprises of him
being serious, vain, self-deluded and then the next time he is insane and the
delusion drives away when he is incarcerated. Malvolio awareness of impressive
jargons by heart shows us that he is sane but the other side of him lends piquancy
to a man who is actually possessed with madness.
Synonymously, Olivia and Orsino have a blend of qualities. This blend of quality is
clarified in their self-deception. Olivia has a delusion that she can live like an
imperial cloistress, Orsino thinks that he really loves Olivia and woos her by proxy,
but when he comes in face to face contact with her he becomes disconcerted that
he immediately starts to quarrel with her. We see that all his affectionate love can
turn into disgust. Olivia on the other hand, although she thinks that she can mourn
the death of her brother for seven years discovers that she can love and wishes to
marry Cesario whom she does not know is in a disguise. Olivia adores Malvolio
has her Stewart, but this generosity is lost when he imitates the gulling that Maria
plot against him. The audience is given a sense of gentler humor hen Orsino
threatens to kill the thing he loves, and is being romantic to Cesario. We also smile

at Olivia when she unveils herself to Cesario; since this shows us that she can be
a sincere and loving person.

Jehoshebeth,
1. This essay is far too short; we expect 600-650 words at least.
2. You end too abruptly. Its necessary to write a conclusion. You
are arguing that the characters are not flat, but are capable
of change. Is that a good thing? Does that make us
appreciate them more? Does that help the message come
across better?
3. Organisation is poor. Since you are required to write about
Malvolio and TWO other characters, you clearly have an
essay that falls into FIVE sections: one for each character
plus the introduction and the conclusion. I say sections
because you might decide to give more than one paragraph
to each of the three characters.
4. Because you have dealt with Orsino and Olivia in ONE
paragraph instead of two, you have given us very little detail
about the different sides of the character of each.
5. Im very troubled by the large number of grammatical errors
and wrong word choices. You need to work on editing those
mistakes before you submit your work for marking.
As it stands, this essay would not gain a pass mark for you. Please
do a rewrite and get it to me in the next two or three days.
Remember that in a Literature exam you gain marks by providing
DETAILED EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT in support of the points you
are making. Please study my comments carefully and make sure
that your rewrite does not repeat the same mistakes.
