letter to inform you that, due to special circumstances, I am unable to submit the
criminal record check by the TaLK program application deadline; however, I promise to
submit the Apostilled, national-level CRC as soon as I obtain it.
Furthermore, if the Apostilled, national-level CRC is not submitted or
unsatisfactorily completed, I will not be eligible for the Exit Allowance. Finally, I
understand that the Apostilled, national-level CRC is non-returnable once I have
submitted it to the TaLK Office.
If I have been charged or convicted of any misdemeanor or felony in the past, I will
provide a detailed explanation of the offense(s) and any and all allegations, including

Hello my name is Emily Park. I am 18 years old and I am a first year student in the Applied
Human Nutrition program at the University of Guelph. As you might have already guessed, I am KoreanCanadian. I was born in Korea but at the age of 4, my family immigrated to Canada. As a result, I have
lived in Canada for the past 15 years. I believe that my experiences in Canada has made me a better
candidate to teach in Korea.
My main motive for applying and wanting to teach in Korea is that I can understand some of the
hardships that Korean students are going through while learning a second language. In fact, Im still
going through it myself. I know the struggles that come with learning a new language firsthand. Like
Korean students, I had to learn a second language. It is part of the curriculum in Canada to learn
French. Although it was only mandatory from grade 1 to grade 9, I made the decision to continue my
French education. As of right now, I have finished up to first year university French and have the
intention to keep learning until I become fluent. However, over the years, the process of learning French
had many ups and downs. Although I personally love learning French, it wasnt always fun and games
for me either.
Over the years, I have realized a factor that influenced whether I enjoyed learning French or not.
The determining factor is the methods that teachers use to teach the material. I think there needs to be
new methods of teaching that fit the new technologically advanced generation. Only using the textbook
doesnt work anymore by itself. One teacher in particular that inspired me to keep learning French was
my grade 7 teacher. He kept the class engaged using a variety of methods. He rarely used the textbook
with us and used it more as a guideline of the concepts and themes we were supposed to be learning.
Instead of using the textbook, he kept us engaged by using a variety of media, activities and
presentations. He would get us to watch relevant movies or listen to music, then get a discussion
started that everyone could engage in. He would use crosswords and word searches to help us
remember new words or even get us to make a very simple, short skit that had to do with the topic at
hand. He was a really big believer in getting the whole class participating in the activities. Without this
teacher, I would not have enjoyed French as much, and possibly may not have even continued. I believe
that through him, I was able to pick up some techniques which I use still to this day to help me study.
All in all, I experienced the impact that one teacher can have.
I want to help students enjoy learning English as I have enjoyed learning French. I know learning
a new language can be very difficult but I also know that there are ways to make it more enjoyable,
therefore making it seem less difficult and more attainable. I feel that I can give students techniques
that have helped me over the years. I want to use the knowledge that my teachers gave me to help
Korean Students learn English. I believe that my experience in learning French is very relevant and can
genuinely be of much help.
I do have another motive for applying. The 15 years of living in Canada has taken a toll on me.
Although I am Korean, I realized over the past few years as Korean culture is being better known, that
there isnt much information that I know about Korea. There was even a few years of my life where I
had forgotten how to speak Korean. The fact that I knew almost nothing about Korea, not only scared
me but scared my whole family. As a result, I spent time everyday learning Korean by myself for about a
year or two so that I can keep the little bit of Korea that I knew. While learning Korean, I sparked an
interest in learning Tae Kwon Do. I spent a few years learning the martial art which helped me learn
more about Korea. However, there was and still are so many things I dont know that I want to learn. As
a Korean, I want to know more about the country, its culture and its history. I want to be able to answer
the questions that people have about the country as well as tell them about it. If I was to get the
position, I want to spend my time outside of the classroom learning about my homeland and my roots.
