 Fresh Starts ...
Every year we all get one. You can guarantee that will happen
every year when January rolls around. January and New Years
resolutions are an every-year tradition. Put your past behind
and start over. Pull out the pencil and paper and put in writing
what you would do different, what you would do better.
Who would want to resist the chance for a new beginning?
A chance to put all your stresses and problems of the previous
year behind you?
So how do you determine when the old ends and the new
begins? Is it New Years and the date on the calendar? Or is it
your heart and your new idea of a new way of living? Is it
letting go of habits and memories or is it hanging on to them? For every individual it
is different what they will decide to do with their opportunity for a fresh start. What
isn’t different is that we all get the chance every day to make a fresh start.
As I write this I can’t help but reflect on the past year. For me it was difficult...but it
was also great. I had many challenges with health, with the economy and as always I
worked too much. However, my heart is full of happiness and gratitude as I think
about all the many good things that happened as well.

We survived the bad economy. We learned a lot through the
challenges the bad economy brought to us. We learned
how to be more creative, more strategic, more patient, more
dedicated and believe it or not, more grateful for the lessons
learned from those challenges. We have been greatly
blessed in many ways because of it. We saw children
graduate this year, another finally able to have a baby of her
own after years of infertility. We watched as all of our other
children made huge strides forward with their personal lives
as well. We are blessed with such good children and love
every one of them so much.
I am also very blessed to have a great husband who loves me; a man I am lucky
enough to work with every day, who puts up with me and my crazy ideas.
A man who let me put my Christmas tree up in October because I love the spirit
of Christmas so much. I wanted to have that good feeling in October, I didn’t
want to wait until the calendar said it was okay to put the tree up. I probably
shouldn’t even admit this, but as I write this on January 20th my Christmas tree
is still up. I love you Paul for loving me enough to do that.

In 1994, I was living on
a large fruit farm in Provo, Utah. The hours were long, the work was hard and
living on a dirt road meant our car was always dirty. On top of the farm work,
the stacks of dishes and piles of laundry created by my four daughters and five
step children kept me on the go around the clock.
Driving down the long dirt road to our home one summer day, I saw my
daughter, Stefanie, driving a tractor on the farm. She was a twelve year-old at
the time and I was so afraid she would get hurt. My husband and I wanted our
children to learn the value of hard work, but I knew there were better ways to
teach them that lesson than by riding tractors!
I wanted the girls to learn to work in a way that would be fun and safe. In
1995, I opened a retail bath and body shop called For Every Body in the local

mall. We were on vacation as a family when we held a contest to see who could
come up with the best name. I remember writing the kids’ ideas on the back of a
checkbook. Stefanie, the daughter on the tractor, came up with “For Every Body.”
My dreams came true as the store quickly became a place for the girls and their
friends to work. Before we knew it, we had opened three stores in local malls
within three years.
In 1997, we developed an all-natural line of bath and body products and
launched them nationally. Soon we had 15 wholesale showrooms and 150 reps
selling our products. In 1999 we introduced a line of soy based candles to
compliment our bath products. The candles were an incredible success, but I
never dreamed we would turn into a candle company. Now, For Every Body is one
of the largest privately held candle companies in the United States, as well as the
largest female-owned soy candle company.
From our farmhouse days, I could never have imagined we would be where we are today.
There have been so many changes. The children are all grown up and we no longer have bath shops in the
malls. A residential development covers the land where our farm once existed. I am not even married to
the same man anymore. Sometimes life has a way of throwing us curve balls, but I always say, “If nothing
ever changed, there would be no butterflies.” As Dr. Seuss says, “Don’t cry because it is over, smile
because it happened.” Despite all the change, so much good has come along the way.
Today I have the pleasure of working with my husband Paul, my ex-husband, Scott, our other partner Joe
Draper, some of my children, and a wonderful team of employees.
I joke as I put one arm around each man and tell the team it is “me and my husbands!” Many people are
surprised we all get along so well, but surrounded by family, I am convinced we can make anything work.
Our family keeps growing, too. When Paul and I married, he brought me two new step sons!
In 2007, we launched For Every Home to give women the chance to make a difference and live their
dreams. We want them to have the opportunity to own their own business while they celebrate the
moments, memories and milestones that happen at home. Memories are a way of holding onto the things
you love, the things you are, and the things that you never want to lose. So, here’s to a year of unforget-
table memories.

My husband formally
served in the Army and
currently is an officer in the Air Force. Many comforts
are taken away when our men and women in uniform go
overseas on deployments and to remote assignments. I
