Being More Effective with Digital

Communication in the Classroom

Workshop Description/Purpose:
The purpose of this workshop is for teachers to become more effective in the electronic exchange of
information to students.

Workshop Objectives:
The objective of this workshop is to answer the following essential questions:
Do I use e-mail, cell phone, and instant messaging technologies appropriately when
communicating with others?
What rules, options, and etiquette do students need to be aware of when using digital
communication technologies?
How can I be more effective using technology to engage students in the classroom?

NETS-T or NETS-A standards:


1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate
experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual
environments.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating
contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes identified in the NETSS.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a
global and digital society.

Workshop Activities:
Workshop Activities include various ways for the teachers to become an expert on several forms of digital
communication with specific examples provided:
Participants will create a Google Classroom and learn how to manage an effective online learning
community
Participants will create a Google Slides presentation and experiment with collaboration through
Google Docs
Participants will become familiar with Plickers and learn how they can be a useful tool for
formative assessments and data gathering
Participants will learn how to set up a quick online discussion community with Today's Meet

Workshop Assignments:
Watch video blog on creating a Google Classroom
Create a Google Slides presentation that includes a Title Page, Educational Quote, Funny Image,
and a Contact Page. (the term "Funny" may be used loosely)
Watch the Plickers tutorial
Watch the Today's Meet tutorial and set up your own room to comment in. Share the link with the
other participants.

Workshop Evaluation (grading components and assessment methods):


Assessment of Participants:
At the completion of the workshop, participants will be given an assessment through Google Forms to
prove this course has been effective and the participants have mastered the necessary elements.

Evaluation of Course:
The participants will also be given an evaluation through Survey Monkey (provided by the instructor) to
help give feedback and improve the workshop.

Instructor and Participant Interaction Expectations:


The Instructor is expected to be prompt when answering questions about the workshop. The Instructor is
also expected to give clear instructions and expectations. The Participants are expected to complete all
assignments, participate in all discussions, and meet all deadlines. The Participants are also expected to
ask questions if something is unclear to them. Finally, the Participants are expected to give detailed
feedback at the end of the workshop.
