Baptized With New Life

Jesus said, "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not
labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his
splendor was dressed like one of these." Luke 12:27
When I think of Easter I think of lilies. They typically bloom April through June and their fragrance is a
sweet perfume that (if you are allergy free) fills to the heart
and soul of the one breathing deeply of its bloom. The
lilies that fill many chancel areas and sanctuaries are a
vibrant white which spreads like the bell of a trumpet. Its
velvet flower opens to expose the stamen sun, dripping
sparkling pollen that almost demands attention.
This beautiful white flower can remind us of the
"Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting" on Jesus as he emerged from the Jordan. "And a voice from
heaven said, This is my Son, Whom I love; with him I am
well pleased. " Matthew 3:16b-17. Jesus received the
baptism of repentance, which invites each one of us to
'change our minds', to 'turn around' from our old way of life
and experience a new life within the blessing of the universal church. Jesus didn't need the baptism of repentance
but did it for our sake, as he took on our form for our sake.
The glory of God shines in our hearts as we are
transformed by God's love and forgiveness, the lilies trumpeting joy to our senses as we reflect upon what this all
can mean in our lives...
New life happens every day as we embrace it.
Christ's resurrection proclaims an end to death that we
can only fathom in the cleansing of baptism, imagining being buried with Christ and born anew in Christ's resurrection.
Yet we are reminded of the absolute horror of
Good Friday which must happen first, as it is the end, the
finality of sacrifice. And we remember this only by moving
ahead each moment of each day in forgiveness, by building bridges of peace, and by sharing God's Love with one
another.

Somewhere while the Easter lilies

Swing their perfumed censers white,
Softened rays of sunlight falling
In lines aslant, and warm, and bright,
Shall gild the altar, nave and chancel;
Rest with tender roseate ray
On the font, enwreathed with lilies
For baptismal rites today.
Another pilgrim on the journey
From the cradle to the tomb,
Shall receive a name and blessing
While the Easter lilies bloom.

PALM of PRAYER

Jesus drew near and said to them, I have been

given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Go,
then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my
disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to obey everything I
have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to
the end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20 (GNT)

Walk The Extra Mile

In a world where communities are being displaced by the catastrophes of war, famine, and
natural disasters, the Church is called to reclaim the
spiritual discipline of solidarity. Christians are summoned to adopt and live out a "theology of accompaniment," in the words of the theologian Roberto
Goizueta. As natural, economic, and political forces
disrupt and uproot communities, the Church is
called to stand in solidarity with those who seek to
move beyond the trauma of displacement toward a
promise of healing and peace.
The story of Ruth is ultimately about this
solidarity. Naomi and Ruth were very much like today's refugees: they never chose to move from
country to country, rather, it was imposed upon
them by forces beyond their control. Yet when that
system failed them, Ruth chose solidarity with
Naomi over despair, and accompanies her motherin-law to pursue a livelihood for both of them.
Ruth's promise to Naomi defines what solidarity authentically entails, and it stands as a challenge for Christians today to walk with refugees as
they build new homes in strange lands.
Through the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, we, as the body of Christ, have opportunity
and power to help those who are living in despair as
refugees. This year, as you consider your gift to the
One Great Hour of Sharing offering, for one moment, think of what it would be like to not have a
place to call home, and then make your very best
gift. Let us make Ruth's promise our own. Let us
live out the call of solidarity with all people, especially those displaced by disaster, war, and famine.

As we continue the season of

Lent, a time of prayer and reflection, this year our focus will be a
study on THE CALL, The Life and Ministry of the
Apostle Paul, by Adam Hamilton. We will meet at
7pm the 5 Thursdays during Lent and meditate on
our faith and dig deeper into what it means to us.
In Christian tradition, Holy Week begins
on Palm Sunday and carries on through
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and
Holy Saturday. It is a time for Christians
to reflect on Jesus journey to the Cross, beginning with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem and
concluding wish his lonely trek from the Upper
Room through Gethsemane and ultimately to Calvary and the empty tomb.

HOLY WEEK SERVICES

Palm Sunday will include a special choir anthem,
while children are waving palms.
Good Friday Mayview Community Service will be
at 6:30pm at Zion. A fellowship will follow after the
service.
Saturday our Youth will host the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt at 3pm at the park. In case
of inclement weather it will be held at the church.
A Sunrise Service will be led by the youth. The
men of Zion will be fixing breakfast before Easter
Worship service.
At Easter Worship service we will welcome
three new members by Confession of Faith and
there will be 2 baptisms.

COMMUNITY, COUNTY &

CONFERENCE CLAMOR
ANNUAL MEN'S RETREAT
The Annual Men's Retreat will be at
Shanondale in Salem, MO on April 29-May 1,
2016. I personally invest a great deal of my ministry specially reaching out to men in the church
and in the community beyond - whom I believe
can be the largest neglected minority in the
church. Beyond serving on building and grounds
committees and civic group style breakfasts, I
challenge you to ask yourself how men are included at your church in spiritually transforming
ways. Statistics bear out that a man's personal
engagement in the church impacts his entire
family.
This weekend pulls together men from
many walks of life for a weekend on sacred
ground called Shannondale. Men are reached
from several approaches that can touch core
aspects of his being: through service, rugged
recreation, contemplative communal with nature, sharing around bonfires, table (kitchen and
grill) fellowship, heart-felt worship, and many
one-on-one deep encounters. Aside from the
incredible experience, we hope to jump-start
communal faith back home at your church. I
make it to a point to round-up and wrangle as
many men from my community to attend and I
make sure my batteries are recharged by attending myself. Will you strive to encourage
at least one man to attend?

The Christian Church in Mid-America

ANNUAL WOMEN'S RETREAT

Come join us on April 29-May 1, 2016
for a weekend of spiritual renewal, recreation,
crafts and fellowship at Camp MoVal in Union,
MO for the Annual Women's Retreat. This
year's event is one you will not want to miss!
The retreat is open to all women, chronologically
young and young in spirit. It is an intergenerational event where we have the opportunity to make new friends and share where we
are in our faith journey with others.
Many women have attended for several
years and many are first-timers. We encourage
you to bring a friend or family member and we
look forward to seeing you at Camp
MoVal!

DEATH PENALTY OPPOSITION

Come hear a powerful faith story from Jeanne
Bishop, sister of a murder victim, who has come to
oppose the death penalty. Bishop is the tenacious
woman at the center of this true-life murder story
and memoir. In 1990, her sister Nancy and brother
-in-law Richard were murdered at their home in an
affluent Chicago suburb. Readers follow the unfolding investigation to discover that the murderer
is David Biro, a local high school student who had
stolen a gun. Biro is sentenced and two decades
later Jeanne enters a maximum-security prison,
where she's asked a simple question: what is your
relationship to the offender? Bishop captivates
readers with her deliberate, painful, and utterly authentic story that answers that question. All are
welcome - each event below is free.

EMMAUS HOMES
In May 2015, the Emmaus Homes Board
announced they would be transitioning clients from
the Marthasville campus into the community of
their choice. We have already experienced great
success in the first six months of this process and,
in many ways, the transition is moving faster than
we anticipated.
This is an exciting time of change and
growth for the clients and staff of Emmaus Homes.
What remains unchanged is our commitment to
the mission and ministry of Emmaus. In many
ways, 2015 was a difficult year for all of us, however, we remain focused on continuing our 120
year tradition of providing high quality, faith-based
services to people with developmental disabilities.
We would LOVE to visit your church and share an
update from Emmaus! Contact Chris
at 636.534.5218 oradamsc@emmaushomes.org

Calvary
Jesus, the Christ, 33, of Nazareth, died Friday on Mount Calvary, also known as Golgotha, the place of the skull. Betrayed by the apostle Judas, Jesus was crucified by the
Romans, by order of the Ruler Pontius Pilate. The causes of death were crucifixion, extreme exhaustion, severe torture, end loss of blood.
Jesus was, a descendant of Abraham, a carpenter of Nazareth, and Mary, His devoted Mother. Jesus was born in a stable in the city of Bethlehem, Judea. He is survived
by His mother Mary, His faithful Apostles, numerous disciples, and many other followers.
Jesus was self educated and spent most of his adult life working as a Teacher. Jesus also occasionally
worked as a Medical Doctor and it is reported that he healed many patients. Up until the time of His death,
Jesus was teaching and sharing the Good News, healing the sick, touching the lonely, feeding the hungry,
and helping the poor.
Jesus was most noted for telling parables about His Father, a Kingdom and performing miracles, such
as feeding over 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, and healing a man who was born
blind. On the day before His death, He held a Last Supper celebrating the Passover Feast, at which He
foretold His death.
The body was quickly buried in a stone grave which was donated by Joseph of Arimathea, a loyal friend
of the family. By order of Pontius Pilate, a boulder was rolled in front of the tomb. Roman soldiers were put
on guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that everyone try to live as Jesus did. Donations may be
sent to anyone in need.
