Madeleine Morlino accepted to all four
U.S. military service academies

Moorestown High Schools
Madeleine Morlino feels anything
can be accomplished with grit, determination and perseverance, as
well as support from others.
She calls herself your average
17-year-old girl, but Morlino has
achieved above average accomplishments in her 17 years. Morlino found out in February she was
accepted into all four United
States military service academies, and last week she was
named Military Child of the Year
for the Air Force branch, all very
competitive programs.
I was in shock. I didnt think I
would get in. I was so excited. Im
truly honored to be chosen from
all the candidates, Morlino said.
I dont think you can achieve
everything by yourself. I am
thankful to my family and the
people of Moorestown for their
support.
Morlino was adopted as a 9month-old from Guangzhou,
China, by Leonard and Kerry
Morlino. She also has an older sister, Eleanor, who is a freshman at
Ringling College of Art and Design. Her father Leonard was in

the Air Force for 23 years. She

lived in England for nine years
before moving to Moorestown
and attending Moorestown High
School.
Throughout her time in
Moorestown, Morlino has accomplished much. She was involved
in many extracurricular activities such as various sports, class
councils and clubs, all while
maintaining her grades, as she is
in the top 9 percent of her class.
She wasnt shy to the arts and volunteering within her local neighborhood groups. She even created
her own events such as the Veterans Benefits and Job Expo last
year. She also received many academic
and
service-related
awards, in the area, region and
nationally.
Youll be awarded in so many
different ways by putting out
what you can and with all your
heart, Morlino said.
Since she was a freshman,
Morlino has been very serious
about attending one of the United
States military service academies. She started to look into
each academy with the life and

March is Womens History

Month, highlighting the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.
The Moorestown Library is celebrating with a number of programs all about women. Residents will get the opportunity to
learn about women in history in a
fun and exciting way.
Everything that we get (about
history) from schools and colleges has very little womens history That has gotten better over
the years, but women were and
are still largely left out. It is a lot

of fun, and it is interesting to

learn about womens history,
said Jean Perry, a retired adjunct
history professor at the Burlington County College, now Rowan
College at Burlington Country.
The Moorestown Library started the celebration last week on
Feb. 29 when Perry gave a presentation on women from your own
neighborhood. The Feb. 29 event
was the first of the series on
women from South Jersey. The
next presentations are March 14
on valiant New Jersey women,
getting to know Emily Roebling,
Dr. Lena Edwards, Clara Barton,
Elizabeth C. Stanton, Lucy Stone
and
Marilyn
Bourke-White;
March 21 on women social activists, learning about Edith
Elmer Wood, Ethel Lawrence,
Jane Addams and Maggie Kuhn;
and March 28 on women scientists, an introduction to Alice

Hamilton, Rachel Carson, Erin

Brockovich and Admiral Grace
Hopper.
Perry will give a lecture and
PowerPoint presentation during
these programs; however, there
will be an open discussion from
the audience throughout and
questions, answers and comments at the end. She will also not
only discuss the womens contributions in history, but their personalities and obstacles they
faced.

Hello, spring, are you here yet?

Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
arch 20. Eleven more days. It
cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunges us every year, no matter how mild or extreme it is.
We got lucky this winter, with just
one major snowstorm that crippled us
for a week or so. Its been bitter cold at
times, too, as any winter is, and we got
a sprinkling of wet weather last week.

Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.

But, hey, its in the 70s this week!

No matter how bad it is, winter affects all of our moods, and it affects
our bottom lines, too.
Well most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow and cold weather affect local
businesses as well, especially retail
shops. Bad weather keeps patrons in-

side. The arrival of spring weather on

a consistent basis will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Cold weather keeps people in the
mindset of no end in sight, and prevents many from taking day trips to
our states wonderful good-weather
spots, or from planning future trips, as
well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

Start temporary water solution

to get permanent fix done
Scott Carew recently stated that
Moorestown is moving forward to put a
Band-Aid on the contaminated well problem. In political rhetoric they call it an immediately interim solution.
Yeah right, read The Sun article and do
the math.
Three weeks here, three months there, it

things started. And, as Mr. Carew quoted,
the contaminated levels are up-ticking. I
would call it passing the political hot potato around Town Hall.
Come on guys, lets get the temporary solution going so we can get the permanent
fix done.
Sadly to say, thats estimated to be $21
million for three treatment plants. That is
a lot of potatoes.

12 Steps, 12 Services, 12 Sermons at First Baptist Church

worship services called, Learning and
Living the 12 Steps of Addiction Recovery.
On the second Sunday of each month of
2016 at 10 a.m., the worship service will be
designated a step service especially welcoming those struggling with or impacted
by addiction.

March 13 is the next meeting.

Many 12 Step programs meet at our
church. What we aim to do through this series is to give people in 12-step programs a
place to worship the higher power talked
about in meetings and in the Big Book,
said church pastor Linda Pepe. Sometimes our addictions can make us feel like
an outcast in church, or ashamed to even

Moorestown Improvement Association announce the 112th Annual Meeting of Moorestowns oldest civic organization. This esteemed entity was founded in
1904. From that first year, it carried out programs and projects
designed to benefit the population
of the entire town. MIA had the
first water well dug and the first
concrete sidewalks and curbs in-

stalled, as examples of its early efforts.

As stipulated in our charter, we
are to hold an annual meeting
where all members as well as the
general public are invited to attend. The program for our 2016
Annual Meeting will feature Jack
Cresson, Moorestowns resident
archaeologist. Cresson will speak
about Moorestowns prehistoric
past, an overview of the prehistoric sites that are located around
town.
The trustees are inviting everyone to come and learn about who
was living in our towns area well
before it was an established mu-

nicipality. The meeting is free and

light refreshments will be available. The location of the Annual
Meeting is the Garden Room of
the Moorestown Community
House and it begins at 7 p.m. on
March 17.

As the daylight grows longer
and the temperatures rise, we are
assured that our friend the
groundhog was right this year
an early spring. With an early
spring, preparations for summer
will kick into high gear. The Department of Parks and Recreation
has already paved the way for
summer programs, and registration is just a click away.
The Summer Parks Program
2016 will take place at Mary
Roberts
Elementary
School,
George C. Baker School and the
New Albany Recreation Center.
This day camp is geared toward
children ages 5 to 12 and is a relaxed environment in which children can play with old friends,
make new friends, play sports,
games, do crafts and participate in
special projects. This five-week
program boasts a professional
staff, licensed educators and a full
staff of energetic college and high
school counselors who enjoy
working with children. Weekly

field trips are an additional cost to

campers and change from week to
week. The Summer Parks Program
is
a
time-honored,
Moorestown favorite.
As a precursor to the Summer
Parks Program, Four is Fun gets
children warmed up for summer
camp in this age appropriate and
physically active program. Children may attend the morning session, the afternoon session or
both. Licensed educators and professional caregivers staff this developmentally appropriate summer camp for the pre-K set. From
age appropriate physical activities
to academic reinforcement to art
and read aloud time, this camp
has everything your 4-year-old
loves.
The Summer Theater Program
is one of the best, all-inclusive
summer theater programs in the
area. Each summer, more than 100
children are cast in the Summer
Theater Program play, and in the
matter of five-weeks, Director
Sarah Dugan turns 100 individuals into a unified theatrical group.
Each summer, a special partner-

ship between the Special Needs

Camp and the Sumer Theater Program incorporates special needs
campers into the performances.
With Theater Buddies and counselors, each camper is given the
opportunity to perform. This summer Shrek, the Musical, Jr. will
be performed and enjoyed by all.
Entering its second year, the
Summer Theater for Teens offers
children who have grown up in the
Summer Theater Program the opportunity to continue their participation. Teens will delve into the
craft of musical theater and focus
on character development, acting
technique, vocal technique as well
as conditioning and theater history. This year, this talented group of
teens will perform James and the
Giant Peach.
The Summer Special Needs
Camp will continue the expansion
made last summer and will offer
special needs students ages 5 to 21,
two separate groups, the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities from art and

Helpers of Gods Precious Infants

New Jersey seeks volunteers
The Helpers of Gods Precious
Infants New Jersey is a non-profit
organization devoted to building
a culture of life and family in
New Jersey. This labor of love is
the creation of Teri LaBrosse,
Mary Anne Barlow and Claire
Howson, three women and mothers who come to the aid of pregnant women in need who believe
their only option is abortion. Two
of the three partners live in
Moorestown where they work to
aid struggling women and couples as they come through tough
times and get to a place where
they can support themselves.
Their clients are from all over the
area, from Camden to Trenton.
The Helpers organize their
time into driving those in need to
doctors
appointments,
job
searches and hospital visits. They
also spend time finding rehabili-

tation opportunities for women

struggling with addiction and
offer relocation services for those
who suffer abusive situations.
Many times those they help need
assistance getting social services
to which they are entitled, and
the Helpers will set a plan for
them.
The work is not only to better
the situation for mothers and babies, but also for the fathers. If
there is a babys father who needs
help with counseling or finding a
job, the Helpers will do all they
can to aid him as well. They believe that if a father is willing to
step up to his responsibilities he
should be encouraged to do so.
They have also been known to
help the grandmothers of these
babies.
Since the three women began
working together more than a

year ago, with their incorporation of the non-profit in October,

more than 25 babies have been
born, including twins. Triplets
are on the horizon. Anyone interested can become a volunteer
helper, and donations of goods
and finances are always appreciated.

really excited to apply. She applied to all of the academies, as
they are very competitive programs and didnt think she would
get into all of them. Her ultimate
goal was just to serve her country
no matter what branch.
Her first acceptance letter was
from the Naval Academy, then
came the Coast Guard, then the
Army and finally the Air Force in
February.
I was completely blown away,
Morlino said.
However, things were not over
for Morlino, as she had to decide
which academy she wanted to attend. Morlino felt all were great
opportunities, but after speaking
to counselors and learning more
about each school, she ultimately
chose the Air Force Academy.
I would have been honored to
have gone to any of the service

academies. However, the Air

Force Academy had more majors
that I was interested in, more career fields that aligned with my
interest goals like the ability to
go to medical school or obtain my
masters degree and amazing
opportunities, like free fall parachuting, Morlino said.
She also recently found out she
was chosen out of 500 applications as the Military Child of the
Year for the Air Force branch.
This is a national award that recognizes military children, one
from each branch, and gives an
award of $10,000 in cash and a laptop computer. The award will be
presented in Washington, D.C., in
April.
I was definitely honored and
humbled (to receive the award),
Morlino said.
Though Morlino has worked
hard for all she has accomplished,
she attributes all of her success to
her family and the Moorestown
community.
According to Morlino, living
the military family lifestyle, she
has learned a lot from her family.
She came to the conclusion to go
to a military academy because of
her fathers service, but she also
has learned the value of getting

up early, great time management

skills and the importance of support from family, friends and her
community.
From my experience, I wouldnt be here without my family. My
parents have been so supportive
and really pushed me when I
needed it, and same with my sister, Im so proud of her, Morlino
said.
Morlino also wanted to thank
her friends, school, neighbors and
the entire Moorestown community for all of their help and support
along the way.
I wouldnt be here without
each and every one who helped
me. Im so grateful for everyones
support, Morlino said.
Morlino hopes she can inspire
others to follow their dreams. She
hopes those who see her accomplishments know she is an average 17-year-old, but that if you
work hard and put in 110 percent
effort, you can achieve your goals.
If you can dream it, you can
do it. I hope kids, from a 9-yearold trying out for play to a senior
trying to get into a scholarly program, see you can achieve it if
you put the work in. And if you
do, I definitely think you can do
it, Morlino said.

High Mark" by Kim Hanley on
March 15 at 11 a.m.
With professional partner Buffalo Bill Cody, Oakley, a diminutive sharpshooter and exhibition
shooter, competed in a sport and
in a world dominated by men. She
learned to shoot from necessity,
hunting to feed her parents and
siblings. Oakley grew up poor,

overcoming a difficult and abusive childhood. She felt strongly

that women were just as capable
as men and insisted they should
strive to achieve any goal or occupation that interested them.
Her motto was to, "Aim for a
high mark for practice will
make you perfect." Her hope was
all women would reach the "Bullseye of Success."
Hanley has opened the eyes
and put smiles on the faces of
thousands of young American
citizens, as a historical impersonator of Oakley, Abigail Adams
presented at the library last year
Betsy Ross and many other compelling American women. Hanley
holds her B.F.A. from the State
University of New York, F.I.T.
campus, in restoration and history of applied arts. Hanley is also a
talented seamstress who designs
and creates all of her costumes

from historical references.

A Boat NJ course will be offered by New Jersey Boating Safety Classes in Moorestown on
March 21 and 23.
The two-evening "Boat NJ"
course meets the needs of boaters
and personal watercraft operators for a basic overview of boat
and PWC operation. The boating
safety class is required by the
state Division of State Police Marine Law Enforcement for boat

children. Sean Fischel Connect
has made the Special Needs Camp
a priority in its annual giving and
has allowed this program and its
certified special education and
nursing staff to serve these children and their families.

Recently the Moorestown Rotary Breakfast Club hosted Susan

Buchwald, the CEO of Community Treatment Solutions in
Moorestown. This was Buchwalds fifth time in visiting the
club, and she was presented a
check in the amount of $1,000.
CTS is the last line of defense
and hope for abused, neglected,
abandoned or trafficked children
and youth almost all suffering
from delayed development and
trauma, said Scott Aschoff, Rotary president.
Without CTS, these children
would fall outside the system,
meaning that they would not get
the care, supervision, clinical
services and therapy they need,
Buchwald told the club.
CTS, a non-profit organization,
was established in 1990. Today, it
serves more than 400 children,
youth and families every year in a
variety of clinical intensive and
specialized in-community services across southern New Jersey. It
is experts in its field and dedicated to serving the most at-risk children and give them confidence,
competency skills and hope.
CTS receives funds from the
State of New Jersey for their clinical services only. All other programs and activities, such as art,
music, reading and sports, to
name few, which are so critical in
the betterment of these children,
need to be funded through
fundraising and private donations.
