INTRODUCTION

This sports management activity event completely organized and conducted by

the students of University Kuala Lumpur Institute of Product Design &
Manufacturings Foundation in Science and Technology course. Broga Hill, also
known as Bukit Lalang is a 400-meter high, 3-peaked hill in Semenyih, roughly 40
minutes from the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The hill has been a growing tourist
attraction amongst locals as the scenery at the top of the hill as well as hiking trails
attract the eyes of locals, especially being so near to the city. Hiking is not only a
physically healthy activity but also can be seen as a sportsmanship activity.

First Aid Kit and each of us is recommended to bring flashlights.

HISTORY
BROGA HILL HISTORY
Broga takes its name from the River Broga which runs through the area. The
name Broga is believed to be derived from Buragas, a mythical beast that lives in the
forest. Broga was mentioned by Freddie Spencer Chapman in his book, The Jungle is
Neutral, to

be

location

where

British-backed

rebels

fought

against

the Japanese during World War II. Broga town is surrounded by the lush green hills of
a tropical rainforest and sits on the edge of the Titiwangsa Range. Broga is unique in
that it sits right on the border of both the states of Negri Sembilan and Selangor. On
the Selangor side, Broga falls within the mukim (sub-district) of Semenyih in the
Hulu Langat district. On the Negri Sembilan side, it falls within the mukim of
Lenggeng which is part of the district of Seremban. The Government Health Clinic
and the town football field is located on the Selangor side of the border and the police
station is located on the Negri Sembilan side.
BROGA HILL INFORMATION
Broga Hill is frequented by casual hikers. It is approximately 400m in altitude
and is easily climbed by most people. The hilltop is unique as it is rather devoid of
trees, which is an uncommon sight amongst tropical rainforest. Remnants of burnt out
tree trunks indicate that the area may have been ravaged by a forest fire and the trees
did not regrow. It offers a good view of the surrounding area and has become a
popular picnic and photography spot. Broga is an agricultural town and rubber is its
main crop. Despite the shift from rubber to palm oil in many parts of Negri Sembilan
and Selangor, rubber has remained as the most popular crop in Broga. Broga Hill is a
40 minutes drive by car from Kuala Lumpur. There were regular bus services to
Broga from Seremban operated by the Foh Hup Omnibus Company. It was a nonprofitable route for the company but was operated out of social commitment. Now
local buses ferry residents from the nearby Semenyih Sentral. The hilltop is unique as
it is rather devoid of trees, which is an uncommon sight amongst tropical rainforest.

HIKING ORGANIZATION
There are many outdoor adventure groups in Malaysia. While some are structured
organizations, some groups are loosely based on small groups of friends. Here are
some of outdoor adventure group in Malaysia;
1. Anak Hutan
Consists mostly of friends, this Penang based adventure group climbs mountains and
do just about any adventure activity they can land their hands on.
2. Gunung Online
Local Malaysia forum with member from all over.
3. Lafuma Malaysias own adventure blog
It is only natural that an outdoor gear retailer like Lafuma organizes adventure trips
for their member and customer.
4. Orang Gunung Kuala Lumpur
Home to those who loves to conquer mountains.
PREPARATION
1. Wear shoes with profile (a pattern on the soles to prevent slipping and
gliding);
2. Wear suitable and comfortable clothing (will get dirty...)
3. bring appropriate shoes for river crossings, if any
4. carry a proper backpack
5. rain gear is recommended
6. pack your valuables in plastic bags (mobile phone, camera, etc)
7. Be prepared for the unexpected (first aid kit, whistle, headlamp, gps,...)
8. leave a towel and some dry clothes in the car
9. bring something warm to wear at the top if your hike is a climb
10. a pair of gloves doesn't weigh that much (thorns, roots, trees, mud)
11. if you're comfortable using a walking stick, bring it along
12. bring enough snacks (carbohydrates) and drinks; 0.5 litre for each hour hike is
normal
13. mosquito repellent and leech protection is recommended

Stay Safe

On the trail, respect the environment and be vigilant to potential dangers.

Dont touch, pick up, or eat any plants, flowers, fruit, or animals, especially if

they are unfamiliar.

Study up on safety precautions if hiking into an area known for poisonous

snakes, bears, mountain lions, or other potentially dangerous wildlife.

Protect against bugs and insects by keeping skin covered (long sleeves, hats,
and long pants tucked into socks work wonders), using bug spray, avoiding
strongly-scented skin and hair products, and checking for ticks at the end of
each hike.

RECOMMENDATION
My comment on this actitvity is our time management . We having hard times upon
gathering all the participant in the morning that causes us to leave the college quite late.
Besides , the most important thing that all of us should improve from the beginning is our
communication. We have some difficulties to finalize our date , the food and the
accommodation just because some of us doesnt communicate well during discussion.
Because of miscommunication , we also wasted our time waiting for the one that did not
confirm with us whether he or she would join this activity. Other than that , I would
suggest for our next activity we should have the marketing team so that this activity
would be joined by many other hikers.
On the positive side, this activity really promote teamworking and tighten our
bond.I am glad that all of us really enjoy the hiking activities although we had some
difficulties. I also learn that helping each other and ensuring everybodys safety are
second vital things in hiking program besides own self-conscious.

Full Report
On 21st January 2016 , a hiking trip to Broga was done by the students of foundation in Science
and Technology Unikl Iprom. I am one of the participant that joined the activity. The activity was
facilitate by our co-curriculum lecturer , Miss Zaifilla Farina. There are also some other outsider
that volunteer to be with us. Total participant are 30 people.
Our preparation starts as early as 2 a.m. We woke up, wash ourselves and prepare the
things that needed for the hiking activities . Unfortunately , we forgot to plan the transportation
to bring us from the hostel to university. Luckily , one of our housemate ask for her parents
help.We squeeze into the Avanza illegally with 10 people as we had no choice. We reached
university at 3.30 am and we had to wait for others . Although many of us having some trouble
reaching the university early , we manage to depart at 5.30am.Most of us went there by our
university bus and some of us went there by their own car.
As soon as we reach the bottom of broga hills , we distribute the food such as bread ,
cookies and mineral water . This to ensure none of us hike the hills with empty stomach. After
we did our subuh prayers , we started to divide ourselves into small groups. This safety step just
to make sure that everyone are having responsibility to look after each other. This will also
promotes team building spirit as we want our group member together with us reach the peak of
the hill.
Before we start our journey , our lecturer give briefing and remind us of the precautious
step. At 6.20 am , we make our move. We have to be really careful with our steps as the
pathways are slippery and dangerous . The steps are uneven and we sometimes have to make a
big leap . I am glad that every group consist of boys that are used to hiking activities. Even in my
group , there are few of girls having their first time hiking experience. Most of us decide to rest a
few times before we reach the hills. I feel uncomfortable when we break a few minutes for many
times. This causes me more exhausted. However , I have to tolerate with it because not everyone
have the same thought as mine.
At 3rd quarter of the hills , most of the group move separately as we started to meet many people.
This is where my extreme experience begins as my team leader is my friends brother who is an
expert in hiking. All of the group member agree to follow his step with specific guidance. We
13

hike the hill using the pathway that are not preferable to first timer where we need rope to stay
stable. We also need others hand to pull us higher step . I personally find our team become more
bonded when we had to rely on each other.
With god wills , we arrive the peak around 7.00 am. The scenery was breath taking and
mesmerizing. The air was so fresh and relaxing . We had a precious moment up there while
drying our sweat. Not to forget the sun rise view that become the spotlight of the day. The
mixture of yellow , orange and blue colour of the sky and the sunlight emits the colour that
everyone crave to see it again . Hence , we took the chance to snap plenty of photos. Lastly the
group photo was taken with our lecturers gopro.I guessed that is the best picture we had.
At 10.30 we hike down the hill and reach the ground around 11.45 am. I am glad that
everyone satisfied with the activity and we look forward for this activity again in the future. As
soon as we reach back hostel , we wash ourselves and had a chat. All of us agreed that this fitness
activity refresh our mind and our body .
