HOW CAN I FIND MY 10 DIGIT ASU ID NUMBER (AFFILIATE ID)?
Three to five business days after applicants apply to ASU, they should expect
to receive an email from Admissions Services detailing how to activate their
MyASU student account. An applicant 10-digit ASU Affiliate ID number may be
found under the Profile link on the MyASU student account page.
WHERE CAN I GET MY ASU SUN CARD/ID CARD?
A student can acquire his/her Sun Card after admission at the Sun Card office:

A priority deadline means that applications submitted and completed after
the priority deadlines will be reviewed in the order in which they were
completed and on a space available basis. Late applications may not be
considered for a Teaching Assistantship (TA).

CAN I APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE THESIS PROGRAM?
All students are admitted into the non-thesis program, and will have an
opportunity if admitted, to switch to the thesis program.
HOW CAN I CHECK TO SEE IF I HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLETE APPLICATION?
On the applicants MyASU student account, when all Priority Task items are
complete, an applicants application is typically complete and should show,
In Review. It is important that applicants check their MyASU student
account frequently to keep track of their application status.
HOW ARE APPLICATIONS REVIEWED AND WHO REVIEWS THEM?
Completed applications are reviewed in a holistic manner by a graduate
admissions committee. Only complete applications are reviewed.

WILL MY APPLICATION BE REVIEWED AS SOON AS IT IS COMPLETE, OR AFTER THE


PRIORITY DEADLINE?
Typically, the review process does not begin until the application package is
complete and it is after the priority deadline.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TO REVIEW APPLICATIONS TAKE?
All complete applications received by the priority deadline typically have
decisions made by the March/April timeframe for fall applications, and
October for spring applications.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN AN ADMISSION DECISION HAS BEEN MADE?
An applicant will be notified by email when an application decision has been
made. The most up-to-date status of an applicants application can also be
found on the students MyASU student account.
WHAT IF I APPLY TO THE WRONG PROGRAM?
An applicant must submit a complete application to the correct program.
WHERE DO I MAIL MY APPLICATION MATERIALS TO?
Please keep in mind that the resume and personal statement are uploaded at
the time of application. The online application will ask you for three names
and three email addresses for three recommenders; and the company/school
for which they work. Your recommenders will receive an email and must
submit their letter of recommendation electronically. The GRE and TOEFL
(International applicants) are sent directly from the testing service. ASUs
school code is 4007; and for the department code, applicants may enter
0000. The officieal transcript should be sent directly from the students
institution. Therefore, the only documents that must be sent by mail are
foreign and domestic transcripts, which are officially sealed. If possible, an
applicants 10-digit ASU Affiliate ID number or their 6-digit application ID
should be on the envelope in which transcripts are sent. Transcripts will not
be accepted electronically.

CAN I MAIL MY PERSONAL STATEMENT AND RESUME?
No, they must be uploaded at the time you apply online to Graduate
Admission Services.
MAY I HAVE A FRIEND OR RELATIVE ASK ABOUT MY APPLICATION STATUS?
All communication about the application status is communicated directly with
the applicant; however, an applicant may complete and submit a FERPA
Consent for Access/Proxy form and submit this to the Registrars Office. This
form may be found under Personal Record Forms at the below website
(Transaction by Proxy).

HOW DO I CHOOSE SPECIALIZATIONS TO PUT IN THE ASU GRADUATE COLLEGE
ONLINE APPLICATION?
An applicant should view our website to see the different research areas we
offer, and see what catches his/her interest. An applicant may contact a
faculty member directly to discuss research areas.

welcome to leave this field blank in their graduate Admission Services online
application.
CAN I GET MY ASU ADMISSIONS SERVICES ONLINE APPLICATION FEE BACK?
Unfortunately, the Graduate Admission Services application fee is nonrefundable and non-transferable.
Letters of Recommendation
MAY MY RECOMMENDERS SEND A SEPARATE LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION?
No, all recommenders must use the online letter of recommendation which is
in place through the graduate Admissions Services online application.
MY RECOMMENDERS HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE EMAIL TO SUBMIT THEIR LETTER OF
RECOMMENDATION. WHAT DO I DO?
An applicant may log into their MyASU student account to request for his/her
letters of recommendation to be re-sent. Please be aware that the system has
an automatic waiting period (typically 5 to 7 business days) before a second
request may be sent.
MY RECOMMENDER HAS A PRE-WRITTEN LETTER; MAY I MAIL THAT TO YOU?

The recommender will have an option to upload a pre-written letter at the


time they do the online letter of recommendation.
MAY I HAVE MORE THAN THREE RECOMMENDERS?
No, the required number is three recommenders.
MY RECOMMENDERS DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH; MAY THEY STILL SUBMIT LETTERS OF
RECOMMENDATION?
All letters of recommendation must be in English.
HOW MANY LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION ARE REQUIRED?
Three letters of recommendation are required.
WHAT IF MY RECOMMENDERS DO NOT RECEIVE THE EMAIL TO DO A LETTER OF
RECOMMENDATION?
An applicant may log into their MyASU student account and see who has
completed their letter of recommendation. Once letters of recommendation
have been received, it will be removed from the Priority Tasks section in the
applicants MyASU student account. Applicants may resend the letter of
recommendation request to their recommenders by logging into their MyASU
student account, and requesting another notification be sent through the
Manage Recommenders link. Please be aware that the system has an
automatic waiting period (typically 5 to 7 business days) before a second
request may be sent. The recommender may also want to check his/her SPAM
email.
I TRIED TO REQUEST ANOTHER RECOMMENDATION TO BE SENT TO MY
RECOMMENDER AND THE SYSTEM WILL NOT LET ME. WHAT DO I DO?
The system will only allow an applicant to send a request in a given time
frame to allow ample time for the recommender to receive and complete the
request. An applicant will need to be patient and wait for the system to allow
him/her to send another request (typically 5 to 7 business days).
WILL YOU TAKE A PAPER COPY OF THE LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION?
In order to have a consistent baseline for evaluation, we will not accept paper
copies of the letters of recommendation.
MY RECOMMENDER DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO EMAIL OR A VALID EMAIL
ADDRESS. WHAT DO I DO?
An applicant will need to select recommenders that have a valid email
address and that have internet access.
I HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED MY APPLICATION, AND I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE ONE
OF MY RECOMMENDERS. HOW CAN I DO THIS?

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM GRE AND TOEFL (ENGLISH PROFICIENCY) SCORES?

CAN AN APPLICANT TAKE THE IELTS INSTEAD OF THE TOEFL?
Arizona State University will accept the IELTS score in place of the TOEFL. For

Aerospace Engineering: 6.5

WHAT IF MY ENGLISH PROFICIENCY SCORE IS LOWER THAN REQUIRED?
An applicant must retake the test and earn the necessary score for
application consideration.
DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT OFFICIAL TEST SCORES AND TRANSCRIPTS?
Yes, all documents must be official and sent directly to graduate Admission
Services from the issuing institution/institution attended. International
applicants must provide both an official transcript in the original language
and an official English translation in sealed envelopes.
Another option for international applicants would be for the international
applicant or a friend or a relative to bring these transcripts to graduate

Admission Services in person to see if they would be considered official and


could be used. Graduate Admission Services will only make this
determination if the applicant has submitted an application to graduate
Admission Services, and has paid the Graduate Admission Services
application fee.

HOW DO I SEND MY OFFICIAL TEST SCORES?
An applicant must contact the testing administrators (http://www.ets.org/) to
have his/her official scores sent to ASU. The school code for ASU is 4007; and
for the department code an applicant may enter 0000.
I HAVE SENT MY TEST SCORES/DOCUMENTS BUT MY MYASU STUDENT ACCOUNT
SHOWS THEY HAVE NOT BEEN RECEIVED. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
An applicant should have them resent if it has been a reasonable amount of
time (i.e. a month).
CAN I SUBMIT ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS TO THE APPLICATION, SUCH AS PUBLISHED
ARTICLES AND CERTIFICATES?
These documents are not necessary and may not be part of the reviewed
application.
MY GPA IS LOWER THAN A 3.0. DOES THAT AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY ME FROM
ADMISSION?
No, while admittance is competitive, applications are reviewed in a holistic
manner.

An applicant can submit his/her Graduate Admission Services online
application without knowing his/her GRE scores. Once a students GRE scores
are reported, they will be put with his/her application.
IS IT TOO LATE TO SUBMIT MY GRE SCORES FOR THIS SEMESTER?
Scores should be submitted at least by 15 days prior to the department
deadline; keeping in mind our deadline is a priority deadline: A priority
deadline means that applications submitted and completed after the priority
deadlines will be reviewed in the order in which they were completed and on
a space available basis. Late applications may not be considered for a
Teaching Assistantship (TA).

HOW MUCH IS THE APPLICATION FEE?
The fee is $70 for US citizens, and $90 for non-citizens, assuming the
application is not late by Graduate Admission Services standards. For critical

The application fee cannot be waived.

BEFORE IVE BEEN ADMITTED?
Yes, applicants may send their financial documents before they are admitted,
but they are not required to do so. These are sent directly to graduate
Admission Services by email, fax or mail.

IS THERE AN IRA A. FULTON SCHOOLS OF ENGINEERING PROGRAM TUITION IN
ADDITION TO ASU GRADUATE TUITION AND FEES?
Yes, there is an approximate $50 per credit hour program tuition for all
students in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (in addition to ASU Tuition

WHAT TYPE OF FINANCIAL AID IS AVAILABLE?
Financial aid may be available to graduate students in the form of Teaching

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR APPLYING FOR A TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP (TA)?
There is an application process to apply for a Mechanical or Aerospace
Engineering TA. Prior to the beginning of the semester, and once the TA
application and application deadline are set, students registered for courses
should be able to see the TA application in the Weekly Update the Weekly
Update is sent by email to students who are registered for classes. Questions
regarding the Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering TA may be directed to:

TA positions for Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering
students are assigned, and there is no application process.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR BECOMING A RESEARCH ASSISTANT (RA)?
To become an RA, applicants must contact the faculty directly to inquire
about a position; they can do this before arriving at ASU. It is recommended
the applicant be admitted as a student before contacting faculty. Information

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS ALIGNED WITH BEING AWARDED A TEACHING
ASSISTANTSHIP (TA)?
For students who hold time (50%) TA, there is a full tuition waiver and
potentially a stipend. Additionally, 50% time TAs also receives health
insurance benefits. Students who hold a time (25%) TA receive tuition
waiver and potentially a stipend.
