What is an Operating System?
 A program that acts as an intermediary between a
user of a computer and the computer hardware.
 Operating system goals:
 Execute user programs and make solving user problems
easier.
 Make the computer system convenient to use.
 Use the computer hardware in an efficient manner.

Computer System Components
1. Hardware – provides basic computing resources (CPU,
memory, I/O devices).
2. Operating system – controls and coordinates the use of the
hardware among the various application programs for the
various users.
3. Applications programs – define the ways in which the system
resources are used to solve the computing problems of the
users (compilers, database systems, video games, business
programs).
4. Users (people, machines, other computers).

Multi - programmed Batch Systems
Several jobs are kept in main memory at the same time, and the
CPU is multiplexed among them.

OS Features Needed for

 I/O routine supplied by the system.

Time-Sharing Systems–Interactive
Computing

 The CPU is multiplexed among several jobs that are


kept in memory and on disk (the CPU is allocated to
a job only if the job is in memory).
 A job swapped in and out of memory to the disk.
 On-line communication between the user and the
system is provided; when the operating system
finishes the execution of one command, it seeks the
next “control statement” from the user’s keyboard.
 On-line system must be available for users to access
data and code.

Desktop Systems
 Personal computers – computer system dedicated to
a single user.
 I/O devices – keyboards, mice, display screens,
small printers.
 User convenience and responsiveness.
 Can adopt technology developed for larger operating
system’ often individuals have sole use of computer
and do not need advanced CPU utilization of
protection features.
 May run several different types of operating systems
(Windows, MacOS, UNIX, Linux)

Parallel Systems
 Multiprocessor systems with more than on CPU in close
communication.
 Tightly coupled system – processors share memory and a
clock; communication usually takes place through the shared
memory.
 Advantages of parallel system:
 Increased throughput
 Economical
 Increased reliability

 Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)
 Each processor runs and identical copy of the operating
system.
 Many processes can run at once without performance
deterioration.

schedules and allocated work to slave processors.
 More common in extremely large systems

Clustered Systems
 Clustering allows two or more systems to share storage.
 Provides high reliability.
 Asymmetric clustering: one server runs the application while
other servers standby.
 Symmetric clustering: all N hosts are running the application.

Real-Time Systems
 Often used as a control device in a dedicated
application such as controlling scientific
experiments, medical imaging systems, industrial
control systems, and some display systems.
 Well-defined fixed-time constraints.
 Real-Time systems may be either hard or soft real-
time.

 Hard real-time:
 Secondary storage limited or absent, data stored in short
term memory, or read-only memory (ROM)
 Conflicts with time-sharing systems, not supported by
general-purpose operating systems.

 Useful in applications (multimedia, virtual reality) requiring
advanced operating-system features.

Dual-Mode Operation
 Sharing system resources requires operating system to ensure
that an incorrect program cannot cause other programs to
execute incorrectly.
 Provide hardware support to differentiate between at least two
modes of operations.
1. User mode – execution done on behalf of a user.
2. Monitor mode (also kernel mode or system mode) – execution done on
behalf of operating system.

 Mode bit added to computer hardware to indicate the
current mode: monitor (0) or user (1).

I/O Protection
 All I/O instructions are privileged instructions.
 Must ensure that a user program could never gain control of
the computer in monitor mode (I.e., a user program that, as
part of its execution, stores a new address in the interrupt
vector).

Memory Protection
 Must provide memory protection at least for the interrupt
vector and the interrupt service routines.
 In order to have memory protection, add two registers that
determine the range of legal addresses a program may access:
 Base register – holds the smallest legal physical memory address.
 Limit register – contains the size of the range
 Memory outside the defined range is protected.

Hardware Protection
 When executing in monitor mode, the operating system has
unrestricted access to both monitor and user’s memory.
 The load instructions for the base and limit registers are
privileged instructions.

CPU Protection
 Timer – interrupts computer after specified period to ensure
operating system maintains control.
 Timer is decremented every clock tick.
 When timer reaches the value 0, an interrupt occurs.
 Timer commonly used to implement time sharing.
 Time also used to compute the current time.
 Load-timer is a privileged instruction.

 A process has resources (CPU time, files) and attributes that must be managed.

 Management of processes includes:

Operating System Services
 Program execution – system capability to load a program into
memory and to run it.
 I/O operations – since user programs cannot execute I/O
operations directly, the operating system must provide some
means to perform I/O.
 File-system manipulation – program capability to read, write,
create, and delete files.
 Communications – exchange of information between processes
executing either on the same computer or on different systems
tied together by a network. Implemented via shared memory or
message passing.
 Error detection – ensure correct computing by detecting errors
in the CPU and memory hardware, in I/O devices, or in user
programs.

Operating System Services
 One set of operating-system services provides
functions that are helpful to the user:
 User interface - Almost all operating systems have a user interface (UI)
 Varies between Command-Line (CLI), Graphics User Interface (GUI), Batch
 Program execution - The system must be able to load a program into
memory and to run that program, end execution, either normally or
abnormally (indicating error)
 I/O operations - A running program may require I/O, which may
involve a file or an I/O device.
 File-system manipulation - The file system is of particular interest.
Obviously, programs need to read and write files and directories, create
and delete them, search them, list file Information, permission
management.

 One set of operating-system services provides
functions that are helpful to the user (Cont):
 Communications – Processes may exchange information, on the same
computer or between computers over a network
 Communications may be via shared memory or through message passing
(packets moved by the OS)
 Error detection – OS needs to be constantly aware of possible errors
 May occur in the CPU and memory hardware, in I/O devices, in user
program
 For each type of error, OS should take the appropriate action to ensure
correct and consistent computing
 Debugging facilities can greatly enhance the user’s and programmer’s
abilities to efficiently use the system

 Another set of OS functions exists for ensuring the efficient operation
of the system itself via resource sharing
 Resource allocation - When multiple users or multiple jobs running
concurrently, resources must be allocated to each of them
 Many types of resources - Some (such as CPU cycles,mainmemory, and file
storage) may have special allocation code, others (such as I/O devices) may
have general request and release code.
 Accounting - To keep track of which users use how much and what kinds
of computer resources
 Protection and security - The owners of information stored in a
multiuser or networked computer system may want to control use of that
information, concurrent processes should not interfere with each other
 Protection involves ensuring that all access to system resources is controlled
 Security of the system from outsiders requires user authentication, extends to
defending external I/O devices from invalid access attempts
 If a system is to be protected and secure, precautions must be instituted
throughout it. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

CLI
CLI allows direct command entry
 Sometimes implemented in kernel, sometimes by systems program
 Sometimes multiple flavors implemented – shells
 Primarily fetches a command from user and executes it
 Sometimes commands built-in, sometimes just names of programs
 If the latter, adding new features doesn’t require shell modification

GUI
 User-friendly desktop metaphor interface
 Usually mouse, keyboard, and monitor
 Icons represent files, programs, actions, etc
 Various mouse buttons over objects in the interface cause various
actions (provide information, options, execute function, open directory
(known as a folder)
 Invented at Xerox PARC
 Many systems now include both CLI and GUI interfaces
 Microsoft Windows is GUI with CLI “command” shell
 Apple Mac OS X as “Aqua” GUI interface with UNIX kernel
underneath and shells available
 Solaris is CLI with optional GUI interfaces (Java Desktop, KDE)

Additional Operating System Functions

Additional functions exist not for helping the user, but rather for
ensuring efficient system operations.
• Resource allocation – allocating resources to multiple users or multiple
jobs running at the same time.
• Accounting – keep track of and record which users use how much and
what kinds of computer resources for account billing or for
accumulating usage statistics.
• Protection – ensuring that all access to system resources is controlled.

System Calls
 System calls provide the interface between a running
program and the operating system.
 Generally available as assembly-language instructions.
 Languages defined to replace assembly language for
systems programming allow system calls to be made
directly (e.g., C, C++)
 Three general methods are used to pass parameters
between a running program and the operating
system.
 Pass parameters in registers.
 Store the parameters in a table in memory, and the table
address is passed as a parameter in a register.
 Push (store) the parameters onto the stack by the program,
and pop off the stack by operating system.

 System-call interface maintains a table indexed according to these
numbers
 The system call interface invokes intended system call in OS
kernel and returns status of the system call and any return
values
 The caller need know nothing about how the system call is
implemented
 Just needs to obey API and understand what OS will do as a result call
 Most details of OS interface hidden from programmer by API
 Managed by run-time support library (set of functions built into libraries
included with compiler)

System Call Parameter Passing
 Often, more information is required than simply identity of
desired system call
 Exact type and amount of information vary according to OS and call
 Three general methods used to pass parameters to the OS
 Simplest: pass the parameters in registers
 In some cases, may be more parameters than registers
 Parameters stored in a block, or table, in memory, and address of block
passed as a parameter in a register
 This approach taken by Linux and Solaris
 Parameters placed, or pushed, onto the stack by the program and
popped off the stack by the operating system
 Block and stack methods do not limit the number or length of
parameters being passed

 System programs provide a convenient environment for
program development and execution. The can be divided

 Most users’ view of the operation system is defined by
system programs, not the actual system calls.

System Programs
 Provide a convenient environment for program development and execution
 Some of them are simply user interfaces to system calls; others are considerably
more complex
 File management - Create, delete, copy, rename, print, dump, list, and
generally manipulate files and directories
 Status information
 Some ask the system for info - date, time, amount of available memory, disk
space, number of users
 Others provide detailed performance, logging, and debugging information
 Typically, these programs format and print the output to the terminal or other
output devices
 Some systems implement a registry - used to store and retrieve configuration
information

 An operating system executes a variety of programs:
 Batch system – jobs
 Time-shared systems – user programs or tasks
 Textbook uses the terms job and process almost
interchangeably.
 Process – a program in execution; process execution
must progress in sequential fashion.
 A process includes:
 program counter

Schedulers

 Long-term scheduler (or job scheduler) – selects which


processes should be brought into the ready queue.
 Short-term scheduler (or CPU scheduler) – selects which

 Short-term scheduler is invoked very frequently (milliseconds)
⇒ (must be fast).
 Long-term scheduler is invoked very infrequently (seconds,

 The long-term scheduler controls the degree of
multiprogramming.
 Processes can be described as either:
 I/O-bound process – spends more time doing I/O than computations,
many short CPU bursts.
 CPU-bound process – spends more time doing computations; few very

Context Switch
 When CPU switches to another process, the system must save
the state of the old process and load the saved state for the new
process.
 Context-switch time is overhead; the system does no useful
work while switching.
 Time dependent on hardware support.

 Parent process create children processes, which, in turn create
other processes, forming a tree of processes.
 Resource sharing
 Parent and children share all resources.
 Children share subset of parent’s resources.

Process Termination
 Process executes last statement and asks the operating system
to decide it (exit).
 Output data from child to parent (via wait).
 Process’ resources are deallocated by operating system.
 Parent may terminate execution of children processes (abort).
 Child has exceeded allocated resources.
 Task assigned to child is no longer required.
 Parent is exiting.
 Operating system does not allow child to continue if its parent terminates.
 Cascading termination.

 Paradigm for cooperating processes, producer process

Interprocess Communication (IPC)
 Mechanism for processes to communicate and to synchronize
their actions.
 Message system – processes communicate with each other

 The link may be unidirectional, but is usually bi-directional.

 Solutions
 Allow a link to be associated with at most two processes.
 Allow only one process at a time to execute a receive operation.
 Allow the system to select arbitrarily the receiver. Sender is notified
who the receiver was.

Synchronization
 Message passing may be either blocking or non-blocking.
 Blocking is considered synchronous
 Non-blocking is considered asynchronous
 send and receive primitives may be either blocking or non-
blocking.

Buffering
 Queue of messages attached to the link; implemented in one of
three ways.
1. Zero capacity – 0 messages
Sender must wait for receiver (rendezvous).
2. Bounded capacity – finite length of n messages
Sender must wait if link full.
3. Unbounded capacity – infinite length
Sender never waits.
