Indian students likely to stay away this fall

Mamools jack up sand prices

Fall admissions may see a fall in the low-grade US varsities with worried
aspirants from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana likely to stay away from
them due to the ongoing deportation controversy. Page 4

One of the major factors for the sand business going dirty is
the general lack of awareness on the State Governments
policy on mining of sand and misuse of authority. Page 5

For a change, its a hassle-free ride

Introduction of U-turns by the city traffic police helps ease congestion at two major junctions
MARRI RAMU
HYDERABAD: Small diversions can
make a huge difference. This has
once again been proved when two
U-turns introduced by the Hyderabad Traffic Police on the everbustling Khairatabad-Erramanzil
stretch are giving commuters relief from congestion and chaos.
Passing through the Khairatabad junction in any direction during peak or lean hours used to be a
horrendous task for drivers due to
the sheer volume of traffic and
long cycles of traffic signals. If you
are caught in the long queue of vehicles, there is no other way but
wait for two cycles of traffic lights
for you to get a chance to move further.
But recently, traffic police
blocked the road adjacent to Perika Bhavan coming
from Anandnagar colony which used to be
a one-way road. Vehicles coming from the
TRAFFIC
colony were not alWATCH
lowed further, but had

coming from the colony road, traffic police introduced a
U-turn a few yards after KCP junction.

enough areas in our lives
where we have to meet others expectations. Let your
running be about your
hopes and dreams, said
Meb Kaflezighi, winner of
the 2014 Boston Marathon.
There will be several occasions when one might
have tried walking, cycling,
running or any other physical activity to lose that extra layer of flab around the
midsection that just refuses to go. Some might have
tried in the hope of an active lifestyle, but could not
sustain it due to various
reasons.
And, many might also
have fallen for the obvious
short cuts like liposuction,

Initially, it was a bit confusing,

but now we can drive straight towards KCP and take the U-turn to
come towards V.V. statue. That
saves our time, and above all, the
flow is smoother, say residents of
the colony. The second change
made at the KCP junction was banning right turn for vehicles coming
from Taj Krishna side and moving
towards Khairatabad.
These vehicles were made to
compulsorily turn left, head towards Chief Engineer office and
take U-turn there. For them too,
the time taken to wait at the traffic
light to turn green is saved. It took
some time for people to get used
to the new changes. After initial hiccups, now vehicles are
moving faster and without
any hassles on this stretch,
says Punjagutta Traffic Inspector K. Srinivasa Rao.
Similar initiative on Punjagutta-Shalimar (Srinagar
colony T junction) road also
eased traffic snarls. Vehicle
drivers coming from Ameerpet
had to stop at Shalimar junction
to turn right, holding up the entire
traffic behind them as the road was
too narrow there. Now, the right

REVIEW

Ordinary story comes alive

Engrossing screenplay and convincing
performances pull off this rom-com

In the first film, it was a small appearance. In the second, it was a slightly
bigger role but not enough to show his
acting skills. This third film is tailormade to project Ashwin Babus talent.
Jatha Kalise shows one doesnt need a
huge star cast, a big budget, and glamorous heroines to keep the audience
engaged. All we need is a simple script,
an engrossing screenplay and reasonably talented artistes to pull it off.
Jatha Kalise begins with a group of
friends lying on the beach, drunk, remorseless. They recall indulging in betting, getting drunk on the wedding
night of one of their buddies that leads
to a big skirmish and cancelling of the
marriage. Now the hero is one among
the reckless friends, and the heroine is
the brides pal. An IAS aspirant and a
firebrand, she takes the group to task
by uploading their drunken behaviour
on the net and makes their life hell by
giving them negative publicity. It is a
war between Rishi (Ashwin) and Pinky (Tejaswi). By sheer coincidence,
they both travel in the same car from
Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad, with
the former oblivious to the fact that the
co-traveller is the woman who has
messed up their life, while Pinky continues to issue warnings over the
phone to Rishi. The first half ends just
when the cat is let out of the bag. The
director keeps the conflict point going
by showing the hero falling for the girl,
but allows his anger to dominate matters of the heart. It is only in the second

part of the film that there is a sub plot
which gets sentimental, reason enough
to extend the drama. Though the story
isnt extraordinary, its been executed
well. The locations are a treat to watch,
cinematography is sharp. The music is
reasonably good. Ashwin is tall, dances
well and shows extreme ease in front
of the camera. He has handled comedy
well and has it in him to become a
mainstream hero. Tejaswi is her natural self, exuberant, firm and confident.
Dialogues are well written.
Comedy is situational and the new
age comedians arrive just when you
need them. It is high time spoofs on
successful films and actors stop and
writers give challenging scripts to comedians. Snigdha shines in a welletched role. Not a bad watch at all.

turn is prohibited here and the vehicles can go straight further without any interruption and take a Uturn after Agarwal Eye Hospital
and turn left for Srinagar colony.

Similarly, those coming from Punjagutta need not wait for the signal
light and can make use of the free

This resulted in movement of
vehicles without any obstruction.
Earlier, banning right turn at Tarnaka junction paved way for uninterrupted movement of vehicles in

taking the recourse of fatburners or getting carried

miracles and fad diets advertised by the unscrupulous.
The fact, experts and
seasoned recreational runners in Hyderabad agree
upon, is that there is nothing like a shortcut or a silver bullet that will once
and for all enable people to
stay healthy or lose fat.
There is hard scientificevidence from long term
studies in the US and Canada that prove beyond doubt
the advantages of an active
lifestyle and health. Unfortunately in India, there is
no stress on public health
and the importance of taking up such populationbased studies to make public aware about the importance and link between
active lifestyle and health,
points out the founder of

Hyderabad Runners, Rajesh Vetcha.

Experts point out that
the human body is made to
move, and throughout human history, there is ample
evidence in the form of
hunting, running from attackers, hard physical labour in agricultural fields
and walking long distances
to travel, which are hardcore physical activities.
The more you sit, the
greater is the chance of getting diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular ailments and a whole array of
health related issues linked
to inactivity. When you exercise or lead an active lifestyle, you make your body
stronger. A minimum of 30
minutes of brisk walk, cy-

cling or a jog is mandatory

to stay healthy, says senior
physician Dr. B. Balraju.
Then there is this usual
suggestion or myth that
physical activity like running or cycling for that
matter has long term impact on joints or knees.
Joints and knee pains
occur to those persons who
lead sedentary lifestyle.
You have to move your
body by being physically
active to avoid early onset
of arthritis or chronic knee
pains. Our Indian ancestors never had these problems because they were always
physically
very
active, says sports medicine specialist Dr. Bhaktiyar Choudhary.

Decent debut vehicle

Loud and outdated

An ensemble cast and good technical

support strengthen the intelligent story

The film wouldve felt outdated even if it had

released two decades ago

Sriram Aditya, as director, and Wamiqa Gabbi (heroine) make their

debut with this film. Sudheer Babu
learns he can be a good actor by selecting a fresh and intelligent story.
He has improved a lot in his expressions. The film is as good as
the trailer and there is absolutely
no tomfoolery.
The heroine Seetha (Wamiqa
Gabbi) is about to get married
when she is kidnapped. While the
kidnappers speed away, Ram (Sudheer Babu), a delivery boy at a mechanic store, rams into the vehicle
from the opposite direction. In this
melee, taking advantage of the accident, the bride escapes and Shakti (Sai Kumar) takes Rams best
buddy Praveen into custody and
says he will be released only if the
bride is brought back. To add to
this misunderstanding is another
set of kidnappers with their own
agenda.
We are given a brief character
sketch of each artiste: Ram is nursing a broken heart, he wants to ruin
his girlfriends wedding; Praveen
wants to narrate his story to Dil Raju and he is dating Vidyulekha Raman (Rams sister).
There is Posani Krishna Murali
as a Church Father and Prudhviraj.
Paruchuri Gopalakrishna as Ram's
father impresses in a hyperactive,
angry role.
Bhale Manchi Roju comes as a
relief amidst big budget movies
that disappoint with their poor storylines and pointless comedy
tracks. The director has no qualms
in showing the heros flaw he

keeps fainting at regular intervals
and wakes up the moment he pops

need to balance this act.
The story is packed into 24
hours, and by the end of it, Ram
and Seetha have fallen in love! The
first half requires patience as you
connect the threads of numerous
actors in the drama.
Post interval, the pace picks up
bringing the show alive. The director shows clarity of thought and
gets his cast to perform as per expectations. His support team, be it
the cinematographer or the music
director, add value to the story. The
art director does a good job too.
Prudhviraj again does a spoof of
many films and actors.
To give the director his due, he
has potential and is here to stay.

The film is an indulgent throwback to the 70s

style family drama, unabashedly stereotypical in its treatment
Widely publicised as a film thats bringing
back the Allari Mogudu combination of Mohan Babu, Ramya Krishna and Meena after 23
years, Mama Manchu Alludu Kanchu
wouldve felt outdated even if it had released
two decades ago. This time, actors Allari Naresh, Poorna and Ali are part of the mix, but
more so as sidekicks to the senior actor.
The film pans out as a confusion comedy,
where Mohan Babu finds ways to avoid confrontation between his two wives, Suryakantham (Meena) and Priyamvada (Ramya
Krishna). Their identities are like their
names, youre informed the formers old
worldly, while the other sports a touch of
oomph. Besides, Mohan Babu essays a character with his original name here, Bhaktavatsalam Naidu, one whos always finding ways
to play safe and act like a perfect husband to
both the wives. Things take a scarier turn
when both the children of Mohan Babu, son
Gautham (Varun Sandesh, born to Ramya
Krishna) and daughter Shruti (Poorna, born
to Meena), plan a blind date, unaware of their
background. Thats where Bhaktavatsalam
Naidu brings Balaraju (Allari Naresh) and Ismail (Ali) into the fray to avoid any further
development in the equation. To complicate
things, Shruti then falls for Balaraju and the
rest has Mohan Babu trying hard to escape
from the deadlock in a narrative that hardly
has a surprise. Mama Manchu... does have a
series of rib-tickling one-liners by Sreedhar
Seepana, but its stuck so much in an oldfashioned cover that you refuse to look beyond. The melodramatic background score
by Koti contributes to it. The laziness of the
outcome shows when a flashback episode is
not shot and instead has frames conveniently

borrowed from Allari Mogudu, the same cast
and the stuck between two wives backdrop,
helping him establish the connections. Also,
you see the similarity the makers are trying
to strike when they have Mohan Babu appreciating a sequence from the Sobhan Babustarrer Evandi Aavida Vachindi, where two
wives fight for the same man. Meena, in a sati-savitri like response to this, makes him
cleanse his mouth. Whatever that means!
Allari Naresh, in a Mohan Babu showcase,
doesnt get a chance to show his worth. Alis
womaniser demeanours are in bad taste. Ramya Krishna, being reduced to a glamorous
add-on, makes matters worse. Meena and
Poorna get good screen space, but theres no
value addition. Varun Sandesh, in an extended special appearance, fares marginally better. The length, at 135 minutes is not exactly
cumbersome, though the lack of imagination
in the entire setting hurts. Watching glimpses from Mohan Babus 40-year film journey
at the commencement engages you better.
