Conclusions of the Project
• Containers used were air tight after being equipped with RAZEM-I
• The RAZEM technology is capable of recovering MeBr from
container atmospheres up to the desired target (80%)
• The recovery performance is dependant of the number of RAZEM-C’s
used
• Using 3 RAZEM-C’s, a minimum of 1,42 μg/m³ was achieved in the
container atmosphere

public health, in combination with RAZEM meets the environmental
goals we put forward.

• Sampling Method
During degassing of the cartridges, a sample was taken using inert (electro
polished stainless steel) canisters from the gas stream from the cartridge
towards the containers. The canisters contain 200 ml.
• Analysis Method
The canisters were analyzed in the laboratory with a method based on EPA
method TO-15 with ac GC-MS
The canisters are pumped over a cold trap (glassbeadsat-50c), which is
heated at 140C on injection. The mass spectrometer used is an ion trap.
The limit of detection for VOC’s with this method is lower than 0,1g/kg
methyl bromide(<0.01%).

The threshold concentration is not exceeded in any of the five cartridges.

Therefore it can be said that the:
 Maximum impurity is: 0,4 % (4 g/kg)
 Minimum purity is: 99,4% (0,994 kg/kg)

 Fumigating needs a fraction of the energy used for heating ISPM15).
 To achieve full protection, the consignment has to be fumigated once loaded.
 Consequently, fractional treatments as HT on WPM are 100% energy waste.
 As HT develops mould in the wood, it creates a pathway for quarantine pests,
and becomes a threat for fragile biotopes and human health.
 By recycling methyl bromide, waste does not need to be transported or
incinerated, which saves energy.
 Production of methyl bromide must not increase even if QPS treatments should
increase because of global warming effects.
 Transport of active capturing material and methyl bromide does not increase .
 But its application has to be environmental friendly (ozone layer); green house
effect neutral; energy friendly.

As RAZEM can heat up the circulated gas to 70c, Degassing of the goods is
achieved above ambient temperature. By avoiding natural degassing
RAZEM is not only protecting its operators but also the end-users of the
goods they purchase

• DESCLEAN is developing a fumigation container with incorporated RAZEM

process.
• Fumigation containers will reduce the logistic chain time by 4 days
• Automatic data logging will be available for quarantine inspectors on the container.
Conclusions:
Do not replace methyl bromide by another dangerous gas unless it can be captured (SF
can not be captured), it would be a step backwards for operators and border
inspectors. Do not replace a protective gas by bogus alternatives (Heat treatment is
not a QPS alternative) Developing a new QPS product needs time, will we leave
operators unprotected? Keep the positive and tackle the problems, you will keep
know-how Quarantine HACCP inspections during loading by specialized fumigators,
grand them a job while their know-how is kept and reduces MB use. Otherwise we
might as well get global warming effects without global protection.
