filme.

conforto material e oposio as injustias do estado estavam lado a lado.
Ela observa a
Felix , no final
narrativa.

Felix meets Nandi, an African woman surveying the death and destruction after a
brutal massacre, against a landscape that threatens to absorb the bodies and erase
all traces of their existence.
This film warns that people are covering up or choosing to forget the realities of
the past as part of their creation of a new South African identity. Felix, the well
meaning, if slightly ignorant artist, awakens from his nave reverie to a fuller
grasp of this harsh reality. Nandi serves here as a metaphor for the painful but
necessary process of remembrance. Additionally, this work points out the similar
properties of both landscapes and paintings, which both depict a certain reality
while concealing the history of their development. (Ref)

the deliberate conceptual ambiguities and the wealth of artistic allusions all
contribute to the density of his texts. They remain open to alternative
interpretations, but they become more legible to viewers who are familiar with his
work.

himself in the mirror while shaving and Nandi appears to him. They are connected
to one another, through the mirror, by a double-ended telescope and embrace, but
Nandi is later shot and absorbed back into the ground like the bodies she was
observing earlier. A flood of blue water in the hotel room, brought about by the
process of painful remembering, symbolises tears of grief and loss and the Biblical
flood which promises new life. Kentridge has commented: 'Felix in Exilewas made
at the time just before the first general election in South Africa, and questioned the
way in which the people who had died on the journey to this new dispensation
would be remembered' (William Kentridge 1998, p.90). In this film Nandi's
drawing could be read as an attempt to construct a new national identity through
the preservation, rather than erasure, of brutal and racist colonial
memory.http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/kentridge-felix-in-exile-t07479
The film tells the stories of Felix, a man living in exile in Paris, and of Nandi, a
woman working as a land surveyor. The woman is Felixs alter ego. She stands for
the longing for ones homeland, and how for his sake someone bears witness to the
incidents in the new, democratic South Africa. No differently than with the fears
and memories that flood over him in his room, the world ultimately overpowers
Nandi as wellshe is shot.
Her many gazes are found in the mirror. The drawings Felix produce flood his
sparse room like water, like memory and longing. On the other hand, Nandi is
embedded in a cosmic distance that dissipates in the misery of black South Africa.
In the topography of the landscape, Nandis surveying instruments search for
traces of history, for a standard of existence, for a direction.
The drawings and images of Felix and Nandi pile up one atop the other,
functioning in both cases as seismographic documents of an emotional shock. The
victims of the story are discovered on discarded daily newspapers and written as
such into the landscape. Nandi too, finds death. Felix, on the other hand, finds
himself once again in the deserted landscape of his homeland, but now with a
In Felix in Exile, the fifth film of the series made between September 1993 and
February 1994, Kentridge depicts the barren East Rand landscape as witness to
the exploitation of and violence against both natural and human resources.
Isolated in a hotel room, Felix peruses the survey charts of Nandi, a young black
woman who maps the history of the terrain. Figures and structures are subsumed
into the landscape or night sky, allegories for how the land can bear the scars of
crimes against humanity.http://www.guggenheim.org/newyork/collections/collection-online/artwork/9422
He does not work out the story board of the film before he begins, it rather
develops in the process of making the film, or in the process of making a drawing.
According to Kentridge, all his work begins with the impulse or the desire to draw
with the sacrifices made to reach that point in contemporary South Africa. In the
film, Felix meets Nandi, an African woman surveying the death and destruction
after a brutal massacre, against a landscape that threatens to absorb the bodies
and erase all traces of their existence. This film warns that people are covering up
or choosing to forget the realities of the past as part of their creation of a new
South African identity. Felix, the well meaning, if slightly ignorant artist, awakens
from his nave reverie to a fuller grasp of this harsh reality. Nandi serves here as a
metaphor for the painful but necessary process of remembrance. Additionally, this
work points out the similar properties of both landscapes and paintings, which
both depict a certain reality while concealing the history of their development
t the centre of "Felix in Exile" is the figure of Felix, who resembles Kentridge. He
is sitting naked on a chair in a hotel room looking at drawings produced by the
land surveyor Nandi, with representations of massacre victims. Their bleeding
bodies, materialising from the drawings, are eventually swallowed by the earth.
Felix perceives all this through Nandis eyes. The wind blows the drawings from
Felixs suitcase onto the walls of the hotel room, projecting events there. In a
second sequence, while Felix is shaving, his face disappears from the mirror. In its
stead appears Nandis face. As water is flowing from the mirror and flooding the
room, the viewer sees Nandi being shot, and Felix overlooking a barren land.
While he does not portray it as the militant or oppressive place that it was for
black people, he does not emphasize the picturesque state of living that white
people enjoyed during apartheid either; he presents instead a city in which the
duality of man is exposed. In a series of nine short films, he introduces two
characters - Soho Eckstein and Felix Teitlebaum. These characters depict an
emotional and political struggle that ultimately reflects the lives of many South
Africans in the pre-democracy era.
In an introductory note to Felix In Exile, Kentridge writes, "In the same way that
there is a human act of dismembering the past there is a natural process in the
terrain through erosion, growth, dilapidation that also seeks to blot out events. In
South Africa this process has other dimensions. The very term 'new South Africa'
has within it the idea of a painting over the old, the natural process of

Drawing is to me about fl uidity. There may be a vague sense of what youre
going to draw but things occur during the process that may modify, consolidate or
shed doubts on what you know. So drawing is a test of ideas; a slow-motion
version of thought. It does not arrive instantly like a photograph. The uncertain
and imprecise way of constructing a drawing is sometimes a model of how to
construct meaning. What ends in clarity does not begin that way. (William
Kentridge, 1999 p.8.) When I began drawing, I tried very hard to make perfect
erasures. I later understood that the traces left on the paper were

Kentridge was born in 1955 into a wealthy Johannesburg family, descendants of
Jewish refugees from the purges andpogroms of Russia and Europe. (The term
pogrom became commonly used in English after a large-scale wave of antiJewish riots swept through south-western Imperial Russia, presentday Ukraine and Poland, from 1881 to 1884.) For generations the family had
been deeply involved in politics and human rights issues in South Africa. Both his
parents were lawyers, famous for their defense of victims of the apartheid.
in his work most often date back to the 1950s period, reflecting according to
Kentridge, that a lot of his work is trying to mine a childhood set of responses to
the world.
The first time you see a picture of violence there is a kind of shock that you dont
get once youve seen thousands of pictures like this on television. There is an
element of trying to go back to an earlier stage, of trying to recapture the
sensitization, and I think part of the images of drawing backwards in time has to
do with trying to capture a different way of seeing. (Ref)
