Study Guide to The Stages of Mitosis

Things you should review and use to study:
Notes
Do Nows
Videos, assignments, animations, on Google classroom
Lab activities
** This is a guideline to study from, but I highly suggest adding information from any
of the notes/labs in your notebooks (TOC 2-7) and review them. To assure you are
prepared for this test. It will be the last test of Trimester 2!
Stage

Important
information/
picture of this
stage

Interphase
The cell
duplicates its
DNA

Developments
What happens during this
stage in cell
1. G1 (1st gap) - small cell
absorbs nutrients and grows
(does it job)

Memorization Clue
Feel free to add additional
memorization clues that
you may have
intermission

2. Synthesis - cell continues to

grow and duplicates its DNA in
preparation for making duplicate
cells in mitosis.
3. G2 (2nd gap) - cell keeps
growing and does it job until it
grows to big.
Prophase
Chromatin
condenses into
visible
chromosomes

Chromosomes appear as
sister chromatids held
together by the
centromere.
Nuclear membrane
dissolves.
The centrioles migrate to
opposite poles & spindle
fibers form in between
them.

In Prophase the
chromosomes aPpear

Metaphase

Chromosomes
line up on the
metaphase
plate.

Centromeres are attached to

spindle fibers

Anaphase

Sister
chromatids are
pulled apart

Centromeres divide
Spindle fibers contract
Chromatids are pulled towards
the poles

Telophase

Nuclear
membranes
form around
the 2 new
nuclei

The chromosomes reach

the poles

Cytokinesis

The splitting of
the cytoplasm

The cytoplasm distributed

equally between the 2 new
cells
In animals, a cleavage
furrow forms from outside
in
In plants, a cell plate forms
from inside out

Asexual Reproduction

Describe the process

In Metaphase they line up

in the Middle

In Anaphase they are

pulled Apart

In Telophase you have Two

new cells.

separation of cytoplasm

Give at least 1 example of

an organism uses this type
of reproduction

Binary Fission The organism splits in two forming

Paramecium

two identical organisms

Budding The daughter organism grows on

White potato plant

the side of the adult organism and

eventually falls off, forming a
smaller identical copy of the adult

Vegetation Propagation The plant splits, forming another

Spider plant

plant. Similar to budding.

Regeneration The split part of an organism

Starfish

regrows itself to become another

identical version of the original

What is created during the

process of mitosis?

During the process of mitosis, two identical new cells are formed.

What is cancer?

Cancer is the uncontrolled cell mitosis.

When would a cell divide?

(3 reasons)

A cell would divide for:

- Growth
- Repair or Replacement
- Cancer

Do cells ever stop dividing? Cells are only allowed to complete a certain amount of divisions and
then they die.
How long does a
Eukaryotic cell take to
divide? (about)

Mammalian cells take around 12-24 hours to divide

When does a cell duplicate

its DNA? (be specific)

A cell duplicates its DNA in interphase, the S stage

What happens after

mitosis?

After mitosis, the cell returns to interphase, the chromosomes uncoil

back to chromatin and the cell restarts the cell cycle until apoptosis
(programed cell death)
