Overview
1.1 Positioning
In scenarios involving plazas, blocks, roads, and highways with a poor mains supply or no
mains supply, supplying power becomes an issue. As a solution to this problem, Huawei has
developed the PowerCube 500, which includes small-power solar equipment and light
emitting diode (LED) street lamps. The PowerCube 500 is an ideal choice for locations with
abundant solar energy but without reliable mains because it is environment friendly, easy to
install and maintain, theft-proof, and highly reliable.
There are three types of PowerCube 500:
The PowerCube 500 consists of an energy plant system (EPS), integrated controller and
converter (ICC), and energy storage system (ESS).

Solution Description
The solar video surveillance power supply solution (with pole-mounted PV module
supports) consists of the following components: poles, cantilevers, lightning rods, PV
module supports, PV modules, (optional) solar junction boxes (SJBs), an ICC, a
sunshade, an ESS, and video surveillance devices (such as network cameras). The ICC
includes a solar controller, direct current (DC) regulator, and DC-DC converter.
The solar video surveillance power supply solution (with floor-mounted PV module
supports) consists of the following components: PV module supports, PV modules,
optional solar junction boxes (SJBs), an ICC, a sunshade, an ESS, and video surveillance
devices (such as network cameras). The ICC includes a solar controller and DC
regulator.
NOTE
If more than two PV modules are used, configure SJBs. One SJB is used for a maximum of six PV
module groups, each containing one or two PV modules.
ESUs are categorized as gel ESUs and energy storage unit-D series (ESU-Ds).

(double-controller scenario)
The solar video surveillance power supply solution works in the following way:
In strong sunlight, PV modules convert solar energy into currents, which then converge
at the solar controller. The solar controller monitors the power supply. The PV modules
supply power to video surveillance devices and store surplus energy in the ESS.
In weak sunlight, PV modules cannot generate sufficient electric energy. Both the PV
modules and the ESS supply power to video surveillance devices.

Gel ESU
Figure 3-16 shows a gel ESU.
Figure 3-16 150 Ah gel ESU
A gel ESU is designed for an ESS and used in solar power supply solutions. It has the
following features:
Issue 01 (2013-05-03)
16
PowerCube 500
Solution Description
Its electrolyte does not dry even if the gel ESU is overcharged or is stored or operating at
a high temperature. A gel ESU is insusceptible to thermal runaway because of its large
heat capacity and good heat dissipation. A gel ESU has the electrolyte mixed with silica
dust to form an immobilized gel, which makes the electrolyte immune to leaks and
delamination.
Its cover is elegantly designed and made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) that
has high corrosion resistance and strength. The cover is reliably hot-melted, eliminating
the potential for leaks.
Its separator has high porosity and low resistance, which provides a large space for
storing electrolyte.
Its terminals are made of lead based poles with copper cores, ensuring high current
bearing capacity and corrosion resistance. The poles are double sealed to prevent leaks.
Its safety valve opens and closes under an appropriate pressure to prevent gel ESU
bulges.
The gel ESU voltage is 12 V, and the capacity is 65 Ah, 100 Ah, 150 Ah, or 200 Ah.
A gel ESU can be charged and discharged 500 times at 35C if the depth of discharge
(DOD) is 30%.
A gel ESU has a float lifespan of more than 8 years at 25C (77F).

Solution Description
5.3 Components
5.3.1 PV Modules
The PV module voltage is 18 V or 36 V. If two or more PV modules are used, connect the PV
modules in series or parallel depending on the load voltage before connecting them to the
solar controller.
If the load voltage is 24 V and two or more 18 V, 100 W PV modules are used, connect
the PV modules in series.
If the load voltage is 24 V and two or more 36 V, 100 W PV modules are used, connect
the PV modules in parallel.
Only components with the same specifications can be connected in series or parallel.
Connecting components with different specifications in series or parallel will damage the
components.
Figure 5-5 shows two types of PV modules.
Figure 5-5 PV modules
Its shell structure is made of high-strength and lightweight aluminum alloy materials and
therefore is safe and reliable, providing a protection level of IP65. The shell surface is
anodized or sprayed with protective paint to resist corrosion and extreme weather. All
shell materials comply with the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances
(RoHS) directive.
The innovative cantilever rotational structure allows the lamp to rotate between 30
degrees to 90 degrees to adjust the illumination angle.
The power cable connector can be quickly inserted and removed, ensuring ease of
maintenance.
The patented modular structure facilitates maintenance.

PowerCube 500
Solution Description
5.3.3 ESU
During the day, the solar controller charges ESUs by converting solar energy received by
PV modules into chemical energy. At night, the ESUs convert the chemical energy into
electrical energy to power loads.
Gel valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) ESUs are most widely used in a solar energy
system because the ESUs are easy to transport, have no liquid inside and no leakage, and
have a long lifespan.
The ESU performance varies according to temperature. The ESU operating temperature
ranges from 10C to +50C (14F to 122F). You are advised to install ESUs under the
ground to prevent theft and to extend the ESU lifespan as the underground temperature
varies slightly.
Do not short-circuit ESUs in use because electric sparks caused by short circuits may
injure personnel. Protect ESU cable connectors when connecting or disconnecting cables.
For example, wrap the cable connectors by using electrical adhesive tape.
Lead-acid ESUs contain lead and lead compounds. To prevent lead pollution, do not
uncover ESUs unless required and do not damage the protective layers for ESUs. If the
ESU lifespan ends, request local ESU recycling professionals to collect, transport, and
dispose of waste ESUs.
