Customizable Reporting - Traditional reporting products try to predetermine the types of reports an
organization will need, but since everybodys requirements are unique, the goal is never fully achieved. At ENow,
we understand this challenge and have decided to take a new approach to providing reports; we start with
delivering over 160 of the most commonly-requested reports in our Reports Library, and then go one step further
by giving you the ability to either customize these reports or create an entirely brand new one. The ENow
Management System gives you endless creative freedom when it comes to the types of reports you can create and
how you can disseminate them throughout your organization. (See the diagram on page 6)

Architecture & Installation

Architecture
The ENow Management System version 7.0 contains four components, the ENow Administration Console, the
ENow Web Server, the ENow Client, and the ENow One-Look Dashboard. The first component is the ENow
Administration Console; it is responsible for the configuration, report management, and controls dashboard
access. The ENow Web Server is responsible for displaying the One-Look Dashboard. The ENow Client is installed
on Exchange, Domain Controller, SharePoint, BlackBerry server in the organization; it is responsible for reporting
data to the ENow Web Server component. The output of these transactions can be viewed in real-time in the ENow
One-Look Dashboard from any machine or device with a compatible internet browser.

Installation Overview
The ENow Management System 7.0 installation is a simple four step process.
1.

2.
3.
4.

First the ENowWebServerSetup.exe is used to install the ENow Web Server site on your IIS web server.
(see page 13) Please keep in mind that the ENow Web Server site should be installed on an IIS web
server that is part of the same domain as the Exchange or BlackBerry Enterprise server. The ENow
Server web site should not be installed on an IIS web server that is already configured as an Exchange
server, Domain Controller, or WSUS server.
Once all the installation is complete, the administrator is able to take complete control of the ENow
Management System 7.0 configuration by logging into the ENow Administration Console. (see page 18)
Next, begin using the ENowClientSetup.exe to install the ENow Client on each Exchange server, Domain
Controller, SharePoint 2010 server, and/or BlackBerry server in your organization. (see page 20)
Finally, open internet Explorer and browse to the ENow One-Look Dashboard for all of your monitoring
and reporting needs. (see page 24)

Instructions to configure FRS and DFS Replication monitoring

Compass has some fantastic new features for monitoring FRS and DFS Replication, and Lightweight Directory
Access Protocol (LDAP). Lets first take a look at FRS and DFS Replication.
One of the main uses of FRS and DFS replication is for the SYSVOL directory share. The SYSVOL directory share is
critical in a Microsoft network as it is used for Group Policy and scripts given to client computers on the network.
As businesses transition from the older, less efficient FRS replication used in Windows Server 2003 to the newer,
more efficient DFS replication available in Windows Server 2008, they need a way to monitor replication before,
during, and after. Compass monitors FRS and DFS Replication on two different levels. On a higher level,
monitoring is done through Windows Events. This comes preconfigured when you install Compass. On a deeper
level, Compass provides real-time monitoring by placing a file on one Domain Controller within each domain (into
the SYSVOL/domain/scripts folder) and tracking its replication through its replication partners (the other DCs).
In order to keep Compass running light on your system, Compass will only drop one file and replace it with a
newer version every 2 hours. Compass will then query the other Domain Controllers in the network, and if they
have the most recent version file the replication test is considered successful. If one or more DCs not have the
most recent version, the indicator light will first turn yellow, then red and send an alert to the network
administrator. To enable this feature open the Compass Administration Console and navigate to Server>Tuning
Policy>Agent Options and specify a source Domain Controller where Compass will drop the file. (Please see
screenshot below with the red arrow next to the configuration window)

Compass also supports multiple domain configurations, plus telephone or email ENow to schedule an appointment
with a Compass Support Engineer. Lets move on to the new LDAP monitoring features.

Instructions to configure monitoring of LDAP Expensive Queries

In a similar way that Compass monitors FRS and DFS replication at a higher and more in-depth level, Compass
also has great new features for monitoring LDAP. While todays Active Directory is self-tuning for the most part,
LDAP expensive queries cause a decrease in performance. To make sure youre A\D environment is running as
efficiently as possible, Compass will use Windows built in Performance Monitor to periodically monitor LDAP
Searches Per Second, LDAP Client Sessions, and LDAP Bind Time. If any of the predefined acceptable thresholds
are crossed, the indicator light will first turn yellow, then red and send an alert to the network administrator. To
adjust the thresholds for these features the network administrator will open the Compass Administration Console
and navigate to Server>Tuning Policy>Agent Options. (Please see screenshot below with the green arrow
next to the configuration window)

On a deeper level, Compass will take advantage of Windows built in diagnostic tools to monitor LDAP expensive
queries. An LDAP search is considered expensive if it has to visit a large number of objects in Active Directory. The
default threshold for an expensive query is 10,000. That means any search that visits 10,000 or more objects
would be considered expensive. In order to monitor this Compass will take advantage of Event Logging, which
allows you to determine if you have expensive searches.
To enable logging the Server Active Directory Diagnostic Event Logging must be enabled. On each Domain
Controller to be monitored for expensive queries a registry value must be changed. The registry entry that
manages diagnostic logging for Active Directory is stored in the following registry subkey:
The network administrator will navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics\15 Field Engineering

And set the DWORD value to 5
Once this is configured, when Compass receives the information that the threshold of 10,000 has been crossed, it
will turn the light in the console from Green to Red, and send an alert or text message to the appropriate person.
At this point the Admin can look drill into Compass which will have the time of the expensive query, and the
application that made it. If the default value set by Windows of 10,000 is not desirable, this value may be changed
by navigating to the following registry key.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters

And creating the following DWORD value Expensive Search Results Threshold. This can then be set to the
desired value.
Enabling the diagnostic logging of LDAP will alert the network administrator if there is a misbehaving application
on the network and identifying and reducing expensive queries will have your A\D environment running at peak
performance. Please see the
Our Support Engineers are available from 5am-5pm Pacific Time to assist you with this configuration, please call
or email to schedule an appointment enabling this feature.
