Operations Research
The first formal activities of Operations Research (OR) were
initiated in England during World War II
Definition of operation research: OR is the systematic
application of quantitative methods, techniques and tools to
the analysis of problems involving the operation of systems.
The OR society of India: the application of the scientific
method to study of operations of large complex organizations
or activities. It provides top level administrators with a
quantitative basis for decisions that will increase the
effectiveness of such organizations in carrying out their basic
purposes.

Operation Research
Methods use in OR study:
Mathematical
programming
techniques

Stochastic process
techniques

Statistical methods

Calculus methods
Linear programming
Nonlinear programming
Dynamic programming
Integer programming
PERT & CPM
Game theory

Statistical decision theory Regression analysis

Markov theory
Cluster analysis
Queuing theory
Pattern recognition
Simulation method

Operation Research
Linear Programming: the most prominent OR method is
Linear programming. It is designed for models with linear
objective and constraint functions.

Steps to formulate LP model

Step 1: Study the given situation and find the key decision to
be made. Hence, identify the decision variables of the
problem.
Step 2: Formulate the objective function to be optimized.
Step 3: Formulate the constraints of the problem.
Step 4: Add non-negativity restrictions.
