David Cameron made the announcement May 19, even as he declared his
belief that the UK would be safer and
stronger if it remained in the 28-nation
bloc.
Cameron spoke in front of his 10
Downing Street office after holding a rare
Saturday Cabinet meeting and winning
its agreement to recommend that Britain
remain part of the EU rather than strike
out on its own.
Despite that support, some Cabinet
figures will back the leave campaign
that wants Britain to carve its own
path outside of the EU bureaucracy in
Brussels.
REFORMS
Cameron said if Britons decided to remain in the EU, he would seek continued
reforms to address their concerns about
job losses and benefit payments to EU
migrants seeking work in Britain.
I dont love Brussels, I love Britain, he said, emphasizing that Britain
can have the best of both worlds if it
remains in the EU under a reform deal
he reached last month with EU leaders.
The June vote will come as the EU
struggles to deal with a sustained immigration crisis that last year brought
more than a million people fleeing war
and poverty to its shores.

with Cameron.
Two strong future Conservative party
leadership contenders, Home Secretary
Theresa May and Treasury chief George
Osborne, indicated support for staying
within the EU, as did Scottish National
Party leader Nicola Sturgeon.
Meanwhile, just the day after the date
of the Referendum was announced, London Mayor Boris Johnson, another influential Conservative figure seen by some
as a possible future party leader, said he
would join the campaign to encourage
Britain to leave the European Union.

he said Camerons vaunted renegotiation of the terms of its relationship with
the EU will have little impact.
Much of the opposition to EU membership comes from the UK Independence Party led by Nigel Farage and
from skeptical members of Camerons
own party.
The deal Cameron agreed upon with
27 other EU leaders protects Britain
from taking part in an ever closer union
with European nations and makes clear
that Britain will not adopt the euro currency shared by 19 EU nations. Cameron
says it also protects British interests and
restricts British welfare payments to
migrants from other EU nations.

RRHealth Secretary To Impose

Contract On Junior Doctors

The Bern

BRITAINS health secretary has taken

the unusual step of opting to impose a
new contract on junior doctors after
failing to strike a deal with thousands
of medical professionals in England.
Jeremy Hunts decision last month
comes after the junior doctors rejected
the Conservative governments final
offer. He said the government was
motivated by concerns that the National
Health Services standard of care on the

weekends was too low.

Patients suffer when governments
drag their feet on high hospital mortality rates, and this government is
determined our NHS should offer
the safest, highest quality care in the
world, Hunt said.
The dispute between the government and junior doctors those who
are in training but may have up to 10
years of experience has escalated in
recent months. Thousands have gone
on strike to protest plans to change pay
and work schedules.
CONSTERNATION
The dispute has caused consternation among the British public, which
considers the health care to be a
fundamental right. The NHS is a matter of national pride although its
shortcomings are widely scrutinized

Vermont Sen Bernie Sanders is an

outsider who has far exceeded expectations as he battles Hillary Clinton for
the Democratic Partys presidential
nomination. The left-wing senator has
energized thousands of young supporters with his promise to transform the
American economy, education and health
care systems, and last month gained
more momentum by winning the New
Hampshire primary.
More than 3,000 miles away, his
brother, a retired academic who has
lived in Britain since 1969, finds himself
a sudden celebrity.
I was at a meeting the other day and
when I stood up to ask a question, half the
people in the audience started clapping,
Larry Sanders said in an interview with
The Associated Press. Ive been going
to meetings for 40 years and no ones
ever applauded before.
Sanders, who ran for a seat in Britains Parliament last year (he came fifth
of seven candidates), has watched his
brothers growing success with emotions
that swing from pride to disbelief.
CASUAL
Sometimes its quite casual Oh,
there he is again with 20,000 people
cheering him. And other times I say,
Oh my God, look at that.
He says he has only recently started
to believe that underdog Bernie can do
it, go all the way to the White House.
Really only in the last month or so did
it seem to me that he was going to win
the nomination, he said. I think once he
has won the nomination he will find the
general election much easier.
At 80, Larry Sanders is six years older
than his brother, his Brooklyn accent
mellowed by more than four decades

and discussed. The government has

struggled, however, to meet escalating
health care costs in a time of austerity.
Outraged at Hunts decision, the
British Medical Association pledged to
consider all options suggesting further
strikes or even legal action. Dr Johann
Malawana said an entire generation of
doctors will be alienated by the governments handling of the dispute.
Theres a real risk that some will
vote with their feet, said Malawana,
the junior doctor committee chairman at
the BMA. Our message to the government is clear: Junior doctors cannot and
will not accept a contract that is bad for
the future of patient care, the profession, and the NHS as a whole. And we
will consider all options open to us.
The new contract takes effect in
August.

ROOTED
He says the brothers politics are
rooted in the post-war Brooklyn where
they grew up, the children of staunch
New Dealer parents. Their father, Eli,
was a Polish Jew who came to the United
States when he was 17, their mother
Dorothy the New York-born child of
eastern European Jewish immigrants.
We were not poor we had
everything we needed but our parents
argued, and what they argued about was
money, Sanders said in the kitchen of
his modest, century-old house not far
from Oxfords historic city center.
I think a lot of politicians, if theyve
come from financially secure backgrounds, it doesnt really resonate what
it means to have
these arguments
and to have this tension. And Bernard,
without wanting to
have it, has it, and it
hasnt gone away.
Bernie Sanders To Sanders, his
brother is always Bernard, never Bernie,
which just doesnt sound right.
Larry Sanders studied politics at
Brooklyn College, where he was involved with the Young Democrats, and
discussed political ideas with his younger
brother, a good-but-not-great student
and a top track athlete.
I dragged him to some meetings,
Sanders said. He found them incredibly
boring, but he came.
SURPRISED
Larry was surprised when Bernie
announced his first political campaign,
a run for high school student president.
He didnt do very well he finished
third out of three, Sanders said. But
he was the only one who had a serious
platform. The others talked more about
prom stuff, but he ... (said) the school
should raise money for scholarships for
Korean orphans.
Later, Larry watched as Bernie
charted his own political path first
as part of the civil rights movement in
Chicago, then in Vermont, where, as
an independent, he served as mayor of
Burlington, congressman and senator.
Larry moved to Britain with his late
first wife, becoming a university lecturer
in health and social care and serving for
a decade as an Oxfordshire county councilor. Last month, he was named national
health spokesman for the Green Party,
which has thousands of members but just
one lawmaker out of 650 in Parliament.
Sanders plans to return to the US for
the Democratic National Convention
in Philadelphia in July. He has allowed
himself to daydream about watching his
brother take the presidential inauguration oath and about visiting him in the
White House.
Its said to be a very good B&B, so
well take advantage of it, he said. I
wont insist on the Lincoln bedroom.

A Quick Psychological Exam
What Do You See In This
Image?

APPARENTLY, after looking at the image below and recognizing one thing or another, a
psychologist can tell you a lot about yourself.
Psychologists believe a persons answer
could tell us a lot about how their mind work.
Its not necessarily a case of which we
see initially, but how easily we are able to
switch between the two animals.
It is thought more creative people will be
able to see both more quickly than those who
notice one and then find it more difficult to
pinpoint the other animal.
The optical illusion, called Kaninchen und
Ente in German, is more than 100 years old
and first appeared in a German magazine
around 1892. It gained more popularity in
1899 when US pyschologist Joseph Jastrow
used it to illustrate his theory that people see
with their mind as well as their eye
It was shown in an experiment that participants who found it very easy to flip between
rabbit and duck came up with an average
of almost five novel uses for an everyday
item. Those who couldnt flip between rabbit
and duck at all came up with less than two
novel uses.
This suggests that the ease with which
you can flip representations is a clue to how
creative you are. The moment when you flip
between duck and rabbit is like a small flash
of creative insight. Its when you notice the
world can be seen in a different way.
Highly creative people often display this
talent for finding new uses for an existing
object or by making connections between
two previously unconnected ideas or things.
Interestingly, when testing children at different times of the year, the results change.
During Easter, they are more likely to see
a rabbit first. In October, seeing a duck first
is more common.
Some people may only see a rabbit, some
only a duck, and others both repeatedly can
see both back and forth.
How did you do?

Police Arrest Suspect With A

Pant-Load Of 38 Phones

POLICE last month arrested a suspected

thief with 38 mobile phones stuffed down
his trousers.
West Midlands Police say they believe the
man stole the phones from concertgoers at a
show by band The Libertines in Birmingham.
The 30-year-old and a second man, who
was also arrested, were spotted at the venue
with their trousers taped closed at the bottom. Police were on the lookout after reports
of phone thefts during an earlier Libertines
gig in the northwest city of Manchester.
Police Inspector Gareth Morris said that
anyone whose phone was taken during the
show should contact officers.

Principal Tells Parents: No

Pajamas On School Run

THE PRINCIPAL of a primary school in

northern England wants to impose a dress

code not on students, but on their parents.
Thats because shes tired of them wearing pajamas and slippers when they drop
off their offspring at the school gates each
morning.
Kate Chisholm of Skerne Park Academy in
Darlington, 240 miles north of London said
she acted after some parents wore what she
considered nightwear to school meetings.
In the letter published last month she
asked parents to dress appropriately in day
wear when bringing their children to school.
Chisholm said she wanted parents to set
a good example for the students and that it
was not too much to ask parents to have a
wash and get dressed.

A Drought That Sees Massive

Biscuit Shortage For Brits

ATTENTION biscuit lovers, Britain is in the

middle of a Biscuit Drought
Droughts occur worldwide, but are usually related to water shortage. Floods that
followed Storms Desmond and Eva forced
the closure of the United Biscuits factory in
Carlisle in December, and ever since, there
has been a notable absence in shops of such
British household staples as Crawfords
custard creams and McVities ginger nuts.
And though United Biscuits has recommenced production on some of its lines,
it anticipates several months of biscuit
shortages.
Due to floods in Carlisle we are experiencing a shortage of a number products
under the McVities, Jacobs, Carrs and
Crawfords brands, United Biscuits said in
a statement last month.
We apologise if consumers are finding it
difficult to get hold of some of these products
and we are working hard at our Carlisle site to
resume normal service as soon as possible.
Could this be the crumbling of a national
staple?

Duelling Rival Druids Fighting

Over Facebook, And Beer
A MAN who claims to be the reincarnation of
King Arthur has gone into battle with Facebook after they deleted his account because
they dont believe he is real.
Former biker Johnny Rothwell, 61, calls
himself King Arthur Uther Pendragon, claims
he is Britains Druid King and signs himself
Arthur Rex. King Arthur changed his name in
1986 and has his royal name on his passport
and driving licence. Rothwell (Pendragon)
wants to use Facebook as a modern platform to keep in touch with his druid group,
The Loyal Arthurian Warband. But he says
the social media giant keeps deleting his
account and claims that is because rival
druids are complaining because they are
unhappy with his leadership.
Enforcing his argument, Rothwell even
changed his name by deed poll in 1986, and
his mythical title features on his passport and
driving license.
But, the unhappy King, he claims that
Facebook keep deleting his account and
believes that rival druids are complaining
because they are unhappy after he protested
plans to ban alcohol from the Stonehenge
summer solstice.
I am back up and running for as long
as it takes the idiot druids and the idiot
Facebook to pull me down again.

Jammie Dodger Biscuit Thieves

Not So Jammy, And Now

Newport Crown Court in South Wales
heard how a trailer stacked with Jammie
Dodgers and Cadburys Chocolate Fingers
was found abandoned in Warrington on June
17 last year following the theft at Burtons
Biscuits in Cwmbran, Wales.
What seems amusing takes on an even
more serious state given that Britain is in the
midst of a biscuit drought at the moment.
In December the United Biscuits plant in
Carlisle was forced to close due to flooding
damage. Hence a huge market shortage of
Crawfords and McVities products such as
Custard Creams and Ginger Nuts..
Aaron Walsh, 25 and Anthony Edgerton,
35, both appearing via video link from HMP
Liverpool and HMP Altcourse, pleaded guilty
to the theft of the biscuits and the HGV trailer.
Edgerton also pleaded guilty to driving
while disqualified and his part in the attempted theft of 1,980 cases of lager on
May 17 2015.
The two men will be sentenced on

Shine A Light

TO BRIGHTEN up those dark winter nights,

an organization called Artichoke, backed by
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, brought
light to the city streets last month. Still
glowing from the success of similar events
in other UK cities in previous years, they held
a free light festival at 30 locations across
the capital, over four evenings, with iconic
buildings and structures lit by projectors
and other light installations. One of the most
popular was a full-sized, three dimensional
projected elephant which walked through
the arch in Air Street, just off Regent Street.
Meanwhile, in Grosvenor Square, Benedetto
Bufalino and Benoit Deseilles Aquarium
was a brightly lit, iconic red telephone box
filled with tropical fish!
So successful was the event that on some
evenings they had to turn the lights off at
various locations, citing fears over public
safety. With various other events planned,
one to look out for.

Starman

David Bowies
life was a tale of
several cities really but he was a
Londoner, born in
the not-so-smart
south western
suburb of Brixton
in 1947. David
Robert Jones had
a difficult early life
in Brixton before
the family moved
eastwards to Bromley. It was at Bromley
Tech School in this leafy London borough
that he acquired his alien-like, permanently
dilated pupil in a playground fight something
which he always felt added to his mystique!
As well as a dodgy eye, he left this school at
16 with one O level in art.
London was very much the back canvas
to his early career. In Denmark Street, just
off Charing Cross Road and famous for its
guitar shops, you can still eat in what was La
Gioconda Caf, where in the sixties, Bowie
could be found sipping coffee with his pal,
Mark Field (later, Marc Bolan). Then, also
in the West End, Bowie moved into a flat
near Pollocks Toy Museum in Scala Street.
Well-known for the clowns, Victorian prints
and other circus memorabilia on display, this
influenced the art-loving, fertile mind of the
yet-to-be discovered star.
A glitzy, jump suit clad Bowie announced
to the world that Ziggy Stardust was born in
Heddon Street, off Regent Street in 1972 and
a wall plaque marks the very spot. Sadly it
was a short life and Bowie announced the
death of Ziggy on July 3rd the following year
to a shocked and distraught fan base at the
Hammersmith Apollo in West London!
Meanwhile the Blitz Club in Great Queen
Street, near Covent Garden was where,
in 1980, Bowie recruited the hippest new
romantics he could find for the video he was
making to accompany Ashes to Ashes.

There is something uniquely disturbing
about seeing actual objects used to commit
horrific crimes but as well as sending a shiver
down the spine, there is some real benefit in
showing just how well-protected London is
by the Metropolitan Police. The painstaking
investigation into some real and present
threats to public safety, like terrorism and
gang violence is reassuring and graphically
on display.
And there are of course some objects
from famous London crime activity like
the weaponry used by the notorious Kray
twins and their associates, the gun used by
Ruth Ellis (the last woman hanged in the UK
for murder) and the rocket launcher used by
the IRA to attack the MI6 building in 2000.
Just a fraction of the Black Museums total

thoughts of being cheated soon turned to I

you can but not for the faint-hearted.

Cross about Crossrail?

One thing you can say about London

someone always has a bright new idea for a
better way to get around the congested city!
The ambitious Crossrail project, connecting west to east under the great city in tunnels
mostly built by Welsh miners is approaching
completion. It has been the largest infrastructure project in Europe, costing some 12bn
($17.3bn) and will become fully operational

in 2018/2019.
However, Londoners have paid a heavy
price. There have been enormous ground
level construction sites with accompanying
trucks and vehicles clogging the streets for
years. Historic buildings have been demolished and the anticipation of better train
routes has pushed up house prices in some
areas that were, previously, more affordable
to ordinary working people.
There is a huge potential upside of course
but even before the first project is up and
running, Transport for London is considering Crossrail 2 with a north to south axis.
Again there are high hopes for the practical
benefits this will deliver but the battle lines
are drawn with people up in arms about the
disruption and destruction (part of the plan
is to demolish Wimbledon town centre!). The
consultation process is underway and even if
it gets the go ahead, Crossrail 2 will not open

for business until 2030.

Another underground project though is
gathering awards and support from all corners. Design company, Gensler London has
dreamt up Underline, a truly startling plan to
turn disused tunnels and abandoned stations
into underground cycle paths with shopping
facilities and cafes! The tunnels would be
accessed from tube stations and would be
surfaced with kinetic paving which would
use energy generated from footfall to provide
power. There are quite a lot of disused tunnels
like the stretches between Holborn and the
abandoned Aldwych station and also from
Charing Cross to Green Park.
Ian Mulcahey, a director at Gensler said
Now that London has reached the highest
level of population in its history we need to
think creatively about how to maximise the
potential of our infrastructure. Very true Ian,
lets hope as much creative thinking is going
into getting those bikes down all those stairs!

Two Storms Cause Havoc In Britain

THOUSANDS of people were left without electricity as winter storm Gertrude
lashed northern Britain with snow, rain
and wind gusts of more than 100mph.
The Met Office weather service said
60 to 70mph winds were experienced
over large areas of Scotland and Northern
Ireland. A gust of 105mph was recorded
in the Shetland islands, off Scotlands
northern coast.
Around 10,000 homes were left
without power in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and there was widespread
disruption to train and ferry services.
A ferry from Rotterdam failed to dock
in the English port of Hull because of
high winds and had to remain at sea. It
had to dock later.
Storm Imogen Lashes Britain
With Wind, Huge Waves
ANOTHER storm with hurricane-force
winds and huge waves battered Britains

coastline February 8, cutting power to

thousands and disrupting travel across
the country.
More than 15,000 homes were without power as Storm Imogen hit Ireland,
Wales and southern England.
Coastal towns were soaked by sea
swells caused by the combination of
strong winds and high tides. Weather
forecaster the Met Office said a 63-foot
wave was recorded off St Ives in southwest England.
Sustained winds of up to 121 mph the
equivalent of a Category three hurricane
were recorded at the Fastnet lighthouse near Irelands southwest coast.
The storm caused cancelations to
trains, planes and ferries, and travelers
were being warned to take care when
driving. The Severn Bridge between
England and Wales was shut because of
dangerous winds.

Shakespeare On Stage
In Squalid Migrant
Camp In France

THIS, ABOVE all, to thine own self

be true.
The words from Shakespeares Hamlet rang out on the most unlikely stage
February 3, at a squalid migrant camp
in the northern French port of Calais,
known locally as the jungle.
The audience of migrants from the
Middle East to Africa would almost
certainly have preferred to see Londons renowned Globe theater company
perform the Bards famous play in his
native country on the other side of the
English Channel.
Yet, up to 300 people bundled against
the cold wind to watch the outdoor show
on a wooden stage beside the small Good
Chance theater, set up last fall to help fill
the void for the displaced camp residents
of the sprawling camp.
Joe Murphy, one of Good Chances
artistic directors, said Hamlets message
resonates in the grimness of Calais.
Hamlet is about a man who is confused, in doubt, who is contemplating
life, who is contemplating death, who is
in the middle of a decision ... And this
is the situation and the reality for many
young men in the camp, he said.
UNFAMILIAR
There are many young kids here
without their families and they are experiencing exactly what this play is about,
Murphy said, referring to Hamlet whose
father was killed.
Most of the people in the audience
appeared unfamiliar with Shakespeare

and the powerful story of the Danish

prince, but they cheered and laughed as
the actors braved the cold, too, for the
performance. Synopses were handed
out in English and a handful of other
languages, including Farsi and Pashtun.
Some in the crowd were schooled in
Shakespeare, however, and happy to
see a stage performance of what they
had only read.
Shakespeare, hes a great author,
said Filmon Kidane, a 27-year-old Eritrean who said he has spent six months
in the camp. Life in here is very bad. We
need refreshment. For two hours I can
forget everything, except feeling cold.
BOLDEST
The performance may be among
the boldest shows by the Globe in its
worldwide tour that began nearly two
years ago on the 450th anniversary of
the Bards birth and ends back home in
Britain this April on the 400th anniversary of his death.
Migrants come to Calais in hopes of
sneaking to England, an increasingly difficult task as authorities step up security
around the port and the Eurotunnel.
The Globe included refugee camps on
its world tour after being unable to take
Hamlet to Syria, a country in the midst of
a civil war. Instead, it brought the performance to a huge refugee camp in Jordan
that houses Syrians. Millions of people
have fled Syria and many are among the
more than 4,000 living in Calais.

Britain Approves Controversial

Gene-Editing Experiments
RR By Maria Cheng

IN A LANDMARK decision that some

ethicists warned is a step down the
path toward designer babies, Britain
gave scientists approval last month to
conduct gene-editing experiments on
human embryos.
The researchers wont be creating
babies the modified embryos will be
destroyed after seven days. Instead, they
said, the goal is to better understand human development so as to improve fertility treatments and prevent miscarriages.
The decision by Britains Human
Fertilisation and Embryology Authority
marks the first time a countys national
regulator has approved the technique.
Permission isnt explicitly required in
many other countries, including the US
and China. The US does not allow the
use of federal funds for embryo modification, but there is no outright ban on

gene editing.
Gene editing involves deleting, repairing or replacing bits of DNA inside
living cells in a biological cut-and-paste
technique that scientists say could one
day lead to treatments for conditions like
HIV or inherited disorders such as muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease.
A team led by Kathy Niakan, an embryo and stem cell specialist at Londons
new Francis Crick Institute, received the
OK to use gene editing to analyze the
first week of an embryos growth.
ENHANCE
The research will enhance our understanding of IVF (in vitro fertilization)
success rates by looking at the very
earliest stage of human development,
said Paul Nurse, director of the institute.
None of the embryos will be transferred into women. They will be allowed to develop from a single cell to

New Crossrail Named The Elizabeth Line

LONDON mayor Boris Johnson

announced last month the new
Crossrail railway that will run
beneath London, is to be known
as the Elizabeth Line, in honour of
the Queen.
Johnson visited Bond Street station with the monarch January 23
and revealed the new lines name
and purple Underground logo.
Johnson said it was wonderful
the line had such a significant
name.
The Elizabeth Line will provide
a lasting tribute to our longestserving monarch, the mayor said.
The Queen visited a station construction site 92ft below ground where she
viewed part of the tunnel and met construction apprentices.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, who was also at the event, said the
name was very fitting given the Queens long association with UK transport.
It was an appropriate event in that the Queen was the first reigning monarch
to ride the Tube when she opened the Victoria Line in 1969.

around 250 cells, after which they will

be destroyed.
Peter Braude, a retired professor
of obstetrics and gynecology at Kings
College London, said the mechanisms
being investigated by Niakan and her colleagues are crucial in ensuring healthy,
normal development and implantation
and could help doctors refine fertility
treatments. Braude is not connected to
Niakans research.
Some critics warn that tweaking
the genetic code this way could be a
slippery slope that eventually leads to
designer babies, where parents not only
aim to avoid inherited diseases but also
seek taller, stronger, smarter or betterlooking children.
MANIPULATING
Many religious groups, including the
Catholic Church, argue that manipulating embryos amounts to playing God.
Some scientists have voiced concern that
tinkering with genes might have unintended consequences not apparent until
after the babies are born or generations
later. And some fear such practices will
only widen the gap between rich and
poor by enabling the wealthy to create
superbabies.
Around the world, laws and guidelines
vary widely about what kind of research
is allowed on embryos, since such experiments could change the genes of future
generations. Countries such as Japan,
China, India and Ireland have unenforceable guidelines that restrict editing of
the human genome. Germany and other
countries in Europe limit research on
human embryos by law.
Last year, British lawmakers voted to
allow scientists to create babies from the
DNA of three people to prevent children
from inheriting potentially fatal diseases
from their mothers. In doing so, Britain
became the first country to allow genetically modified embryos to be transferred
into women.

Whats In The Historic

Agreement On The UKs
Place In The EU
RR By Jill Lawless

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron says

a historic deal agreed by all 28 European
Union leaders gives the UK special status
in Europe. The agreement, won after two
days of wrangling in Brussels, makes changes
in four areas where Britain sought a less intrusive relationship with the bloc. Here are
the key points:
A LEVEL ECONOMIC PLAYING FIELD
Britain sought, and got, protections for it and
the other eight EU countries that dont use the
euro single currency. The leaders agreement says
moves by the 19 eurozone countries to bring their economies closer together
are voluntary for the other member states, and stresses that businesses in noneurozone countries must not face disadvantages within the EUs single market.
The deal also says financial regulation in non-eurozone countries is a matter
for those countries own authorities a guarantee Cameron had sought for the
Bank of England. Non-eurozone countries can also seek a debate in the EU
if they think eurozone economic measures are a problem. Countries including France had warned that could give Britain an effective veto on eurozone
financial decisions.
LESS MONEY FOR EU MIGRANTS
The EU leaders stressed that free movement of people is a key principle of
the bloc. But because Britains economy has been a magnet for hundreds of
thousands of EU migrants in recent years, the UK is allowed to impose temporary
restrictions on the benefits paid to EU workers in Britain.
After a tug of war between Britain and eastern European nations who supply
most of the UKs migrants it was agreed that new workers coming to Britain
from the EU will have to wait four years before receiving benefits such as tax
credits and child payments. The exemption lasts for seven years, less than the
13 years Britain had sought.
Child benefit payments for children who live in their parents home countries
will be indexed to the cost of living there, rather than to costs in Britain.
RULE BRITANNIA
The EUs treaty commitment to an ever closer union among the people
of Europe is a particular bugbear for Britain, where politicians often raise the
specter of a European super-state. This new deal makes it explicit that references to ever-closer union do not apply to the United Kingdom.
INCREASING COMPETITIVENESS
In one of the least-controversial sections of the deal, EU leaders vowed to
strengthen the EUs internal market and improve regulation by lowering taxes
and paperwork for small and medium-sized businesses and cutting red tape.

EU Mulls Probe Of UK
Google Tax Deal As Italy
Investigates

Whats Up With Student Visa

Work Permits?
MANY HAVE been closely following the
litigation surrounding the STEM OPT program as the fate of the program will impact
many international students and workers.
As background, OPT (Optional Practical
Training)has historically been part of the F-1
student visa program, granting international
students one year of work authorization in
a field related to their major or course of
study. In 2008, this program was expanded
to allow for a 17 month extension to those in
a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Math) field.
In August of last year, the Washington A lliance of Technology Workers
(Washtech) filed suit against the US
Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The court hearing the case dismissed all of
Washtechs complaints, but one. The court
agreed with Washtech in that DHS violated
the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) by
failing to provide an adequate public notice
and comment period when the rule was proposed. This violation of the APA would void
the STEM OPT program. Fortunately, rather
than voiding the rule, the court granted DHS
six months, through February 12, 2016, to
properly go through the public and notice
period and republish the rule.
Late last month, DHS requested a 90 day
extension to their February 12, 2016 deadline,
causing great concern to workers relying
on their STEM OPT and their employers.
The request for an extension was the result
of over 50,000 submitted comments, an
overwhelming and unpresented response.
Thankfully, DHSs request was granted
through May 10, 2016.
In order to meet its new deadline, DHS
must publish the final rule by March 11,
2016. In the last two weeks, DHS has sent
the final regulation, training form, and revised

instructions to the Office of Management

and Budget for review. The draft documents
submitted for review shed some light on the
specifics of the final rule including:
STEM OPT evaluations would be required
every twelve months, instead of every six
month as was originally proposed;
Employers would no longer have a specific
duty to mentor F-1s on STEM OPT; and
Employers would be obligated to notify the
DSO of STEM OPT employment termination
within five business days, rather than the 48
hours required under current rules and in the
proposed regulation.
The final rule is expected to be published
in early March with a 60 day implementation
period so that it can take effect on May 10,
2016, meeting the court imposed deadline.
Until then, the current STEM OPT regulations
remain in effect.

GOOGLE is gearing up for a new round

in its European tax fight after the EU
said it could investigate its 130m deal
for back taxes in Britain and Italy alleged
Google owed it some 300 million euros.
Britains Scottish National Party had
asked last month for an investigation of
the tax deal the UK government struck
with Google, with deputy party leader
Stewart Hosie arguing there was a lack
of transparency.
It is my view that an independent
verification of this settlement would
establish confidence that the settlement
is within the boundaries of state aid regulations and is a fair deal for the taxpayers
of the United Kingdom, he wrote.
Ricardo Cardoso, spokesman for EU
competition commissioner Margrethe
Vestager, said that we will look into it and
then decide where to move from there.
Writing in the Financial Times,
Googles vice president of communications, Peter Barron, insisted the company paid tax at the standard corporate
rate of 20 percent.
INDEPENDENTLY
Governments make tax law, the tax
authorities independently enforce the
law, and Google complies with the law,
he wrote.
The anger of lawmakers has been
stoked by reports that France and Italy
were in talks to squeeze more out of the
company.
In Italy, the financial police confirmed
reports last month that Google was under
investigation for allegedly avoiding up to
around 300 million euros ($326 million)
in taxes. Italian daily La Repubblica reported that the investigation stems from
Google activities in Italy from 2008-2013,
when Google allegedly declared its fiscal
headquarters in Ireland.
Google repeated Barrons line and
said it is working with the relevant
authorities.
At the time of Apples settlement,
Google said it was working with Italian
tax authorities.

Michael Crawford To Reprise

Frank Spencer For Sport Relief
MICHAEL CRAWFORD is set to reprise the
role of Frank Spencer in a one-off special of
Some Mothers Do Ave Em.
The famous BBC comedy last aired on
Christmas Day in 1978.
The sketch reunites Crawford, 74, with
on-screen wife Betty (Michele Dotrice), and
features an appearance from Olympic cyclist
Sir Bradley Wiggins, leading to one of Franks
typical disasters.
I am thrilled and delighted to have been
asked to bring Frank back, he said.
Dotrice said it would be an absolute joy
to be reunited again with Frank and that it

was fitting for it is such

a wonderful cause.
Sir Bradley added:
I am a huge fan of Michael so its an absolute
honour to be asked to
be involved alongside
such an icon of British television... and all
for a great cause.
When the show wrapped in 1978, Crawford went on to star in the original production
of The Phantom of the Opera and other successful Andrew Lloyd Webber productions
such as The Wizard Of Oz.

The Case For Staying In The EU

stood for UKIP in the Barnsley

even though in the last election

Oddly ever since Count Nicolai Tolstoy first In/Out vote for Scotland.

If we vote to leave the EU and subsequently say goodbye to Scotland too, it would
surely be an unmitigated disaster.
Cameron looks close to a deal with the EC
that he can present to the nation in June this
year. He has criss-crossed his way round
Europe for the last three months or more.
All the time he is huffing and puffing about
how hard he has fought to ensure we get a
deal he can recommend to the nation. It is all
smoke and mirrors. No-one in Europe wants
us to leave, our government doesnt want us
to leave so whatever Cameron achieves must
look like a tremendous victory grudgingly
conceded to us by Europe.
In truth its a referendum that should never
have been offered. To be perfectly honest, I
havent the slightest clue whether Britain will
profit or not from leaving the EU. But our last
40-odd years have been bound up in Europe
and you cannot predict what will happen if
we turn away from the continent. Will they
be pleased to ensure that life outside the EU
will be as comfortable for us as life inside?
I think not.
COMPLEX
The whole issue is far too complex for
anyone to understand what will happen. I
mean what happens, for instance, to the
half-million pensioners who have left the
UKs shore to settle down in the EU? Can they
have an assured future? And what about the
900,000 Brits living and working the the EU?
Such questions need to be answered. But
more than that, will someone also please tell
us what sort of Britain will it be if we come
out. I fear no-one can answer that question
and it is why I am adamant we should vote
to stay in.

jury. The government is committed to
forming a second court to clear a backlog
of dozens of cases, mostly involving IRA
factions that reject the 1997 cease-fire
and 2005 renunciation of violence delivered by Adams.
Adams has insisted that juries should
hear the IRA-related cases, despite the
long history of IRA intimidation of witnesses and killing of judges.

LET ME be absolutely clear: I like

being in Europe and
I will vote to stay
in when the referendum eventually
arrives.
I am old enough
to remember when
it all began with the
Coal and Steel Community in 1952. An
alliance of six countries: West Germany,
France and Italy along with the intriguingly
styled Benelux Countries. (How Be and Ne
felt being outlettered by tiny Lux I cannot
tell. I only recall getting birthday books
from an aunt, uncle and cousin who signed
everything Vibertia. The ia was Marcia who
got heartily fed up of being a mystifying twoletter addition to a style that clearly identified
Vi and Bert!)
Coal and Steel were bracketed together
since it was felt that the key to war-making
was metal-making and if Germany (West)
and France were jointly involved in smelting
and forging, they couldnt get away with
stockpiling explosive bits of metal to fire
at each other. The Six were thus first and
foremost a peace-making Community. We
were invited to join the Six in 1957 but felt
ourselves too important to join the other
European nations, all of whom were World
War II losers.
There was of course a sub-text to this and
it was that France had taken over the Saar
from Germany after the war and naturally
wanted to exploit its industrial possibilities.
Charles de Gaulle was particularly keen on
building up French control of Germanys border territories. The new community defused

THE LEADERS of Irelands other major

parties accused Sinn Fein chief Gerry
Adams of directing IRA violence in the
past and seeking to endanger jurors
today as they waged their first head-tohead debate ahead of Irelands February
26 election.
Adams spent much of the 90-minute
live televised event isolated versus
Prime Minister Enda Kenny, Deputy
Prime Minister Joan Burton and opposition Fianna Fail party leader Micheal
Martin.
Kennys centrist Fine Gael hopes
to retain power in cooperation with
Burtons left-wing Labour Party. Their

a potentially political vexation.

There was something
fetching about de Gaulle as his
French was remarkably easy
to understand. But he didnt
like the Americans and Brits
the Anglo-Saxon sphere
of influence as he saw it. Its
hard to work out why we and
the Yankees had given him
refuge during the War and
eased his passage back in
1944. He saw Europe as the
third force between the USSR
and we English-speakers.
Anyway, when we finally decided that
a European partnership was right for us in
1963, de Gaulle was adamant he didnt want
us. We had another bash at entry in 1967 and
another rejection by de Gaulle. Our entry had
to wait till the old lad actually died in 1970
when it was Edward Heath who finally got us
into Europe in 1973, and Harold Wilson who
gave the nation its first referendum on our
continued membership of the EU. In 1975,
Over two-thirds of the electorate turned out to

EXPANDED
As the EU expanded from its original
six, up to twelve and now 27, an ever more
powerful economic force was created. Moves
towards the creation of the euro as the common monetary unit began as far back as
1969 but only reached fruition on January
1, 1999, involving everyone at that time in
the EU except for Great Britain and Denmark.
Tony Blair was strongly in favour of committing to the euro but Gordon Brown held out
and antipathy towards it remains with David
Cameron recently assuring the nation that we

coalition since 2011 has led Ireland out

of an international bailout and recession
and returned the country to its previous status as Europes fastest-growing
economy.
Despite that record, recent polls suggest the Fine Gael-Labour coalition faces
an uphill struggle to retain enough parliamentary seats, with Labour at grave
risk of losing out to populist Fianna Fail,
Sinn Fein and smaller socialist voices.
Polls indicate none of the parties will
do sufficiently well to govern without
coalition partners.
But Fianna Fails Martin emphatically rejected the possibility of forming a
government with Adams, citing his Irish

Republican Army background and lack of

credibility on matters of law and order.

(to drag Dean away in handcuffs), and after
more than 25 years together (pretending to be
married) Linda and Mick actually get married.
The bride wore white; the groom wore a pink
bathrobe and fuzzy pink slippers...
Across the Square, Ian has finally come
to realize that Bobby is dangerous and he
cant handle him. His answer? Send him
off to a posh boarding school (against
Janes wishes). Of course he doesnt tell the
boarding school that Bobby is a sociopathic
killer. Stay tuned for a special episode where
Miss Marple investigates a string of boarding
school murders...
The Stacey/Martin/Kush/Shabnam quadrangle is torture for everyone but Martin (who
is still blithely unaware that his son Arthur is
actually Kushs. Finding out that the baby is
Kushs causes Shabs to move across London
with her daughter Jade (the baby she secretly
had after a few minutes with Dean, gave up
for adoption, tried to reclaim, who was then
given to Shirley - but Shirley has decided that
she shes already screwed up enough kids so
after all that she turns Jade over to Shabs).
They drive away as Kush screams after them.
Hes been on a drunken binge ever since. And
Stacey, suffering from post natal psychosis,
has a breakdown, thinks baby Arthur is the
son of God, and has to be hospitalized...
Ben is in love with Paul and finally decides
to tell Abi that hes gay and leaving her (turns
out she already knew he was gay but thought
she could keep him on a leash), but after getting wind of Bens plan, Aunt Babe suggests
that Abi announce to everyone in the Vic
that shes pregnant before he can spring his
news. She isnt actually pregnant, but Babe
says, minor detail, just get pregnant before
he can figure that out...
Elsewhere...Kathy is living with Ian and
Jane and working on the Beale fruit & veg
stall (somewhere Pete is smiling)... Oh yeah,
and Tracey the mysteriously quiet barmaid,
announced that she quite likes the smell of
fish (hey, after over 30 years of being an
extra, a lines a line!)...
What else did we miss over the festive
season? Well, Vincent accidentally killed
Fatboy (by locking him in a trunk to teach
him a lesson, not knowing that Ronnie was
going to have his (Vincents) car crushed, to
teach Vincent a lesson). Dean attempted to
rape Roxy and would have done had Shirley
not walked in. He is arrested and jailed
and Shirley and Buster finally give up on

- being revealed.
This month we see the return of Pat Phelan
whos one of the builders working on Kevs
new garage. Hes as sleazy as ever, divorced
from his wife now and bankrupt too. He gives
Anna the glad-eye and she does her best to
avoid him. Phelan tells Kev that he and Anna
have history but he doesnt give him all the
history, just selected highlights. She leaves
out the bit about how she slept with Phelan
to pay off Owens debts.
Sally decides to stand as an independent

like Deirdre once did in the past. Audrey
reminds Sally that she was a Weatherfield
Councillor once and that her Alfeh was the

Sally remembers, quite rightly too.
Rita gets on the internet this month when
Sophie shows her how to use her new
tablet. She even joins Facebook. Whats an
app? she asks in the Rovers. Youll need
to know your apps from your elbow, quips
Tim. And whats a widget? she asks. You
can get cream from the doctor for those,
he replies. Rita signs up to Facebook and is
over the moon when one of her old school
friends gets in touch. Then she gets another
message from the past which doesnt cheer
her at all. Its from Jenny Bradley and Rita
agrees to meet her, against the advice of
Norris. Rita ends up taking Jenny in, to live
with her in the flat.
Mary mopes about the house in tears
after she finds out that lover Brendan is really
married. In the pub later, Mary opines about
her mother, who by all accounts is a bit of a
prude. There was a time when she wouldnt
even be seen eating a banana in public.

tity. The withholding tax in cases where the

ARCHEOLOGISTS working at
Must Farm in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, recently discovered a
3,000-year-old wheel that has been
completely preserved. It is the first
and largest example of its kind to be
discovered on the isle. The wheels
completeness and relative size
will likley shift views about how
people may have travelled during the
Bronze Age, especially since it was
found at a site located near a river.
This remarkable but fragile
wooden wheel is the earliest complete example ever found in Britain,
said Duncan Wilson, chief executive
of Historic England, announcing the
discovery. The existence of this
wheel expands our understanding of
Late Bronze Age technology and the
level of sophistication of the lives of
people living on the edge of the Fens
3,000 years ago.
Must Farm has been dubbed
Britains Pompeii because, like
Pompeii in Italy, it is remarkably
well-preserved from a fire that occurred at the site approximately
3,000 years ago. The site contains
some of the best-preserved historical
evidence about Bronze-Age Britain.
It was first discovered in 2006 and is
now the subject of a 1.1m excavation project, which has unearthed
wooden houses, bowls, and tools.

Downton Abbey
Star Brendan Coyle
Banned From Driving

ACTOR Brendan Coyle, who played

beleaguered valet John Bates on
TV drama Downton Abbey, has
been banned from driving after being caught behind the wheel after
drinking.
Coyle appeared at Kings Lynn
Magistrates Court in eastern England last month under his real name,
David Coyle, and pleaded guilty to
drunken driving.
Police said he was stopped while
driving a BMW convertible on a
nearby road on January 1. A breath
test recorded him as almost three
times the legal alcohol limit for
driving.
The Eastern Daily Press newspaper said Coyles lawyer, Steven
Dyble, told the hearing that the actor
was returning from an alcohol rehabilitation clinic in Thailand when he
was stopped.
Coyle, who is 52, was banned
from driving for 50 months and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work.

THIS MONTH its time for another exciting

provision from the Protecting Americans from
Tax Hikes Act, passed in December 2015,
and now its time for another one! This time
the Americans are protected because the
tax is due from non-residents in particular,
people who are selling US real property. One
warning this provision only affects people
who are not resident here so if you file a
1040, this wont be of direct concern to you.
If you are non-resident but own a property
here, when you sell it you may be subject
to withholding tax. The law involved is the
Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax
Act of 1980 (FIRPTA) and Ive written about
it previously. The withholding tax was 10
percent of the sale proceeds (not just the
gain) on all sales of $300,000 or more and on
sales under that amount if the buyer couldnt
sign a declaration that they would be using
it as a residence. It was often therefore a not
inconsiderable sum!
Just like no changes have been made
to the $10,000 FBAR limit since it was
introduced, the $300,000 limit had been
unchanged since 1980. Its stating the obvious to say that more properties are now worth
over $300,000, but since theres a zero-rate
band for long-term capital gains, many
foreign sellers dont owe any tax and (eventually) get a complete refund of any withholding
tax. It just takes a lot of persistence!
The new provision increases the withholding tax to 15 percent of the sale proceeds
for properties sold for over $1m and for all
properties where the buyers are not able or
willing to sign to say it will be their residence.
Although the test for a property being using as a residence is quite easy to meet (it
doesnt need to be a main residence), its
common for smaller properties to be bought
for investment which means the residence
condition wont be met. Larger properties on
the other hand, sometimes cant be treated

property will be a residence for the buyers is

unchanged (0 to $300,000 and 10 percent
for over that amount).
If it seems rather tough that sellers have to
face withholding at all, it is even more difficult
to understand how the amount of withholding
should vary based on something that is nothing to do with them whether their buyer is
planning to use the property as a residence.
Also interesting is the fact that the Joint
Committee of Taxation in Washington have
suggested that this increase will result in an
additional $20m per year (more or less) for
the U.S. government. Since the withholding tax is not an additional tax, but simply
payment on account of any federal liability,
it would seem that it cant provide any additional money to the government if the overall
tax rates havent gone up.
The only conclusion I can reach is that
many foreign sellers dont claim back their
withholding tax. Something tells me this is
because they find it difficult to do rather than
because theyve chosen to make a donation
to Uncle Sam!
If you know of anyone who has suffered
this withholding and wants help in claiming
it back Im happy to try!

You Say
Tomato In San
Francisco

David Kidd of You

Say Tomato in San
Francisco.

WHEN DAVID KIDD passed a napkin to native

New Yorker Diane Weiser in a New York bar,
he never dreamed that 15 years later he
would be married, living in the Bay Area and
the proud owner of San Franciscos largest
and most successful British retail shop. Back
then, David was an IT consultant doing a
bank job as he likes to say, installing international trading software for banks across
the globe. The night he was to head back to
the UK, his client literally called him en route
to the airport to come back due to a problem
with the technology.
What else was he to do on a cold winters
night but go to the local pub for a pint (or
two) of Stella. Enter Diane, a public relations executive, having some fun with her
work colleagues and getting ready to sing
what became a somewhat embarrassing
but prophetic Karaoke rendition of Whitney
Houstons Greatest Love of All. After a
whirlwind long-distance romance, David
and Diane were married and soon relocated
to San Francisco for Dianes job, where she
reconnected with an old colleague/friend
growing a company with eight employees
to 400 when she left. One very smart lady!

w w w. y e

It was then that David, an entrepreneur

at heart, envisioned changing careers and
opening his own little shop filled with English
goodies and You Say Tomato was born.
Brainstorming with Diane over dinner one
night, David came up with the clever name
for the shop, playing off of the well-known
Gershwin song as well as the union of this
Brit and his American girl.
Now in its 12th year in business, with
more than 300 products available and growing, You Say Tomato has not only survived
but has thrived through multiple economic
downturns, as well as through the recent
Cadbury/Hershey conflict. The store has
become a go-to for ex-pats, Anglophiles
and tourists alike, attracting visitors from New
York, Miami, L.A. and Davids hometown.
In fact, it was his hometown that immediately connected the two of us. When we
first met this newfound shopkeeper, a mere
six weeks after he opened and barely had his
footing, surrounded by boxes of British goodies, we all laughed hysterically. We couldnt
understand why he was so nice. That was
until we realized that just like my parents
and ancestors, he was from Stoke-on-Trent
and carried the same warmth of personality
that is indigenous to people from that part

Viola Beach Band Killed In

Car Crash Near Stockholm
BRITISH band Viola Beach died along
with their manager in a car crash in
Sweden last month.
The car they were travelling is reported to have gone through a barrier
of a bridge that had been opened to allow a cargo ship to go underneath near
Stockholm. Their car plunged 80ft off
into Sodertalje Kanal on the E4 highway
south of Stockholm.
A barrier, 50m before the opening, has
flashing lights and signs warning there
is a bridge opening, the officer handling
the case said. Inspector Martin Bergholm
added: For some reason, the car drove
through the barriers and crashed down
into the canal.
Witness Jonny Alexandersson told
Aftonbladet: Suddenly theres a car
that pushes past and drives towards the
barrier. It was driving at least 70-80km/h
(45-50mph). Thats very fast when the
rest of us are standing still. He caught
the rear-view mirror on a taxi.
The victims include guitarist and
vocalist Kris Leonard, guitarist River
Reeves, Bassist Tomas Lowe, drummer
Jack Dakin, and manager Craig Tarry.
The band had been in Sweden to perform at the Wheres the Music? festival
in Norrkping.
Tributes have been pouring in on social media for the band, who were from
Warrington, Cheshire.

David has been able to virtually bottle

As the shop celebrates its 12th anniversary this year, we are thrilled to call David a

THE LAST Land Rover Defender, the famed 4x4 off-road vehicle that has been made for almost seven
decades, has rolled off the production line in Britain.
More than two million of the boxy vehicles have been produced at the plant over the past 68 years,
and fans range from farmers to the Queen, who has been photographed driving them over the decades.
Dozens of workers at the Jaguar Land Rover plant near Birmingham in central England cheered January
29 as the last one was presented with its lights flashing and horn blaring.
Jaguar Land Rover did not say why the model is being discontinued. Jim Holder, editorial director of
motoring magazines including Autocar, said it could be because the model can no longer keep up with
emission and safety regulations.

FIVE WOMEN COMPLAINANTS

Convicted Serial Paedophile Rolf Harris

Set To Face New Sexual Allegation
Tin Baths, Tallymen &
Time Travel
By Marianne Green
WHAT A LOVELY trip down memory lane!
Marianne was born in the early post-war
years in Surrey and has brought us lovely an
fun memories of 1940s to 1960s England.
We experience, through her eyes, the great
space race, maypoles and celebrations, milk men,
chimney sweeps
and more. I have
many favorites
from the book but
Ill give you a few
to get you going.
Having the
chimney swept was always a military style
operation in our cottage, with old sheets
covering the furniture, which had been
pushed away from the fireplace. Everything
was then meticulously cleaned upon the
chimney sweeps departure, without a trace
of soot in sight.
She lovingly talks about her family her
dad started out as a gold caddy and gofer
at 11-years-old so as to add as many pennies
as possible to the family coffers. He traveled
quite a lot to find work but always wrote loving letters home and he was a huge reader
and she still has lots of his books to this day
which bring back many great memories.
Some of the family came from Ireland,
some went to war, and some owned different
companies in England. Marianne always had
plenty of family and friends growing up, it
was such a simpler time. Her Aunt Amy was
known to have a bob or two and always
arrived for visits in a black chauffeur-driven
car and wearing furs! She always came
armed with expensive toys and dresses!
We hear about the first time her small village saw a non-white face! Oh the scandal!
The games they played old fashioned
metal skates strapped to shoes, hopscotch,
marbles and conkers.
Holidays at the seaside with deck-chairs,
red plastic buckets and spades, cheese sandwiches, flasks of tea, home-made fruit cake
and, of course, Liquorice Allsorts, Sherbet
Dips and Smarties!
Later as she gets older we hear about her
escapades at the local picture house and
dances at The Walton Hop. She visits New
York. There are UFO sightings and spiritual
readings, astrology.
So much to share. What a memory this
lady has! And in reading this lovely book it
brought back so many things my Mum and
Dad used to tell me about that I had forgotten.
Thank you for that.
So pick up a copy and enjoy your trip down
memory lane with a nice cuppa and some
biscuits (or allsorts!). These simple, lovely
times should absolutely be remembered and
revered. We could learn something from them
take care of your friends and neighbors. A
gentler time for sure.

UK Reverses Decision
To Stop Printing Laws
On Animal Skin
BRITAINS vellum is not vanishing
after all.
The government has reversed a decision to end the centuries-old practice of
printing official copies of laws on parchment made from goat or calf skin.
Some lawmakers expressed dismay
when it was announced last month that
future laws would be printed on archive
paper instead, a move expected to save
80,000 a year.
Paymaster General Matt Hancock
told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that
Britain should keep vellum to safeguard
some of our great traditions.
The oldest vellum law in parliaments
archives dates from 1497, and even older
vellum copies survive of documents
including the 1215 Magna Carta.
Paul Wright, general manager of
vellum producer William Cowley, said
last month that retaining vellum would
ensure future generations had the
opportunity to touch history.

Clarkson was fired in March 2015 after

After Harris was charged, his hometown of Perth, in Australia, removed a

Harris was also stripped of his appointments of Officer and Member of the

Under Britains parole laws he could

company about a Beatles tribute band coming
to Palm Beach. They are called the FAB FAUX.
The subject line read the FAB FUX. I swiftly
emailed Gary at the agency to point this out.

a great bank.
The cash was set aside for legal
claims in the United States regarding toxic mortgage-backed bonds but
doesnt include provision for separate
conduct matters by the US Department of Justice and various US State
Attorneys General, though the bank
acknowledged such costs could
individually or in aggregate prove to
be substantial.
COMPENSATION
More money was also set aside for
compensation in the scandal surrounding consumers who were improperly
sold payment protection insurance.
The bank also wrote down nearly half
a billion pounds in respect to private
banking.
The bank was bailed out at the
height of the 2008 financial crisis and
has been dogged by its past excesses,
including an ill-fated global expansion
drive that briefly made it the worlds
largest bank. It remains 73-percentowned by the British taxpayer.
It is now a much different bank,
despite the lingering clouds. Shore
Capital Markets banking analyst Gary
Greenwood said the bank could readily
deal with the hit.
While such headlines are disappointing they are not necessarily
unexpected and we note that RBS now
has the balance sheet strength to comfortably absorb such costs, he wrote.

support for reuniting families in Europe
could potentially benefit thousands of
children.
They face freezing temperatures and
the threat of exploitation, trafficking and
abuse, she said. The governments
promise to fast-track family reunification
across Europe will help these vulnerable
child refugees build a better life alongside
their loved ones already here.
The new program is in addition to the
20,000 refugees that Britain has agreed
to settle in the next five years.

THE ROYAL BANK of Scotland put

aside some 2bn as the taxpayerowned institution continues to tally
the costs of misconduct and legal
claims.
In an unscheduled update released
last month, the bank also said it would
inject 4.2bn into its pension funds
because of accounting changes. CEO
Ross McEwan said the bank was determined to put past issues behind it.
We will now continue to move
further and faster in 2016 to cleanup the bank and improve our core
businesses, he said. Weve always
been open about the scale of past issues facing RBS and although there
is clearly much more to do, this announcement is a further step towards
addressing legacy issues and building

Britain Announces Plans To Take In Migrant Children

THE GOVERNMENT, pressured by
m ajor charities to do more to help
migrant children in dire need, announced
plans last month to allow an unspecified
number of vulnerable children to come
live legally in Britain.
Britain also said it will provide more
funding to the European Asylum Support
Office to help Greece and Italy reunite
migrants, including children, with family
members already in Europe.
The governments latest measures to
help with the migrant crisis challenging
much of Europe comes after charities
led by Save the Children and opposition
leaders urged it to accept 3,000 children
immediately because they are already in
Europe and living in harsh conditions.
The children are judged to be at risk of
traffickers and sex abusers.
Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said under the new program
Britain will work with the United Nations
refugee agency to identify exceptional
cases in which unaccompanied children
would benefit by receiving shelter in
Britain. He said in most cases, however,
a child displaced by the war in Syria
would be better off staying close by their
home country.
REUNITED
The vast majority are better off staying in the region so they can be reunited
with surviving family members, he
said. So we have asked the UNHCR
to identify the exceptional cases where
a childs best interests are served by
resettlement to the UK and help us to
bring them here.

OBITUARIES

TVs Much-Loved Terry Wogan

SIR TERRY WOGAN, 77, whose warm
Irish brogue and sly, gentle humor made
him a star of British television and radio
for decades, has died. He was 77.
Wogan died last month surrounded by
his loved ones after a short but brave
battle with cancer, his family said in a
statement.
The disc jockey and presenter was
a staple of British broadcasting, best
known for his long-running BBC radio
morning show Wake Up To Wogan, his
annual hosting duties for Britains coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest and
his longstanding association with the
Children in Need telethon.
Born in Limerick, Ireland in 1938,
Wogan began his broadcasting career on
Irish network RTE before moving to the
UK and the BBC, for whom he hosted
quiz programs, game shows and a 1980s
television talk show.
His strengths were a deep, buttery
voice, dollops of Irish charm and a wry
sense of humor. His Eurovision commentary affectionately mocked the kitsch
pop music competition, at which Britain
generally fared badly.
He hosted Wake Up To Wogan between 1972 and 2009 with a break
from 1984 to 1993 and made the show
the most popular on British radio, with
eight million listeners. Wogan called his
fans TOGS, for Terrys Old Geezers
or Gals.
Prime Minister David Cameron said
Britain has lost a huge talent some-

one millions came to feel was their own

special friend.
Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny
said Wogan occupied a special place in
British listeners hearts and he acted in
no small way as a bridge between Ireland
and Britain.
Former CNN talk-show host Piers
Morgan tweeted that Wogan was a rare
broadcaster to excel on both radio and
television: A legend of all airwaves.
Fellow BBC broadcaster Jeremy Vine
said someone once asked Wogan how
many listeners he had. Wogan replied:
Only one.
And it was this approach that made
him one of the greatest broadcasters this
country has ever seen, Vine said. He
only ever spoke to one person.
Wogan, who had joint Irish and British citizenship, was knighted by Queen
Elizabeth II in 2005. He is survived by
his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Academy Award-nominated
UK Actor Frank Finlay
FRANK FINLAY, 89, British actor
who was Academy Award-nominated for
his work alongside Laurence Olivier in
Othello, has died aged 89.
Finlays family said he died of heart
failure last month at his home in Weybridge, southern England. In a statement,
they called him a wonderful father, loving grandfather and a damn fine actor.
Handsome, deep-voiced and capable
of both charm and menace, Finlay was
a founding member of Britains National
Theatre company, played the lothario
Casanova in a 1971 television series of
the same name and starred in the TV
miniseries Bouquet of Barbed Wire, a
portrait of a damaged family that was a
scandalous hit in 1976.
He played Iago, nemesis to Oliviers
Othello, onstage and in a 1965 film adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy, for
which he was Oscar-nominated as best
supporting actor.
Other film roles included Porthos in
Richard Lesters big-budget 1973 take on

The Three Musketeers and two sequels

and the main characters father in Roman
Polanskis The Pianist.
He is survived by a son, a daughter
and several grandchildren.

Georgy Girl
Author
Margaret
Forster
MARGARET FORSTER, 77 the
author of Georgy Girl and more than 20
other novels, has died in London after
suffering from cancer in the back and
spine..
Her husband, Hunter Davies, said
she died Monday at a hospice in London.
The couple spent much of their time in
Englands peaceful Lake District and
also in London.
Davies, also an author, said she underwent a double mastectomy 40 years
ago and recovered fully, but the cancer
returned to her back 10 years ago.
I thought she was a goner, he said
of her initial bout with cancer.

It was bad, but eventually she recovered. At age 50 on her birthday,

she got up at 5am and ran up Red Pike
mountain and then swam in the lake and
came back to the house and brought me
tea, he said.
Davies said the cancer made it impossible for his wife of 55 years to sit for
extended periods because of the pain,
which also prevented her from going out
to restaurants and movies.
The Royal Society of Literature issued
a statement describing her as an extraordinarily prolific and gifted writer of
fiction, non-fiction and literary criticism.
Georgy Girl was made into a hit movie
in 1966 starring Lynn Redgrave, Charlotte Rampling, Alan Bates and James
Mason. Forster co-wrote the screenplay
for the film, which also inspired a bouncy
pop tune that captured the exuberance
of the times.
Forster taught at a girls school in
north London before she started to
write books.
Davies said her novel How to Measure
a Cow will be published in March.

UK Police Seek Identity Of Mystery Man Found Dead On Moor

RR By Jill Lawless

ONE DAY last month, an elderly man

took a train from London to northwestern
England, trekked up an isolated hillside,
and died.
The mans identity and cause of death
are a mystery that has stumped police
and intrigued Britain, as detectives
probe whether the mans final journey
is linked to a deadly plane crash more
than 60 years ago.
The Greater Manchester Police force
says the body of a neatly dressed man
of about 70 was found December 12 on
a path leading to a rocky outcrop called
Indians Head on wind-swept Saddle
worth Moor. In his pockets were return

train tickets and 130 but no ID. There

were no signs of violence and an autopsy
was inconclusive.
The day before he was found dead,
the man had taken a train 200 miles
from London, then traveled to the village of Greenfield, where he stopped at
a pub and asked how to get to the top of
Indians Head. Then he set off on foot,
never to return.
DECADES
Inquiries in the London neighborhood
where the man started his journey have
yielded no results. Police are scouring missing person reports going back
decades and have asked for DNA from
relatives of Hugh Toner, a Northern

Ireland man who disappeared in 1994.

Detective Sgt John Coleman, who is
leading the investigation, said last month
that detectives are keeping a completely
open mind.
One line of inquiry is whether there
is a link between the man and the 1949
crash near the same spot of a British
European Airways DC-3 in which 24
people died. Eight people survived,
including a five-year-old boy named
Stephen Evans, and police had suspected
Evans might be the dead man.
But last month Evans contacted police
to say that he was alive and well. Police
still believe it is possible that the dead
man is a relative of someone involved in
the plane crash.

Julian Assange Claims

Total Vindication With
UN Panel Ruling
RR By Gregory Katz and Jamey
Keaten

A LITTLE-KNOWN United Nations

human rights panel has sided with
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in
his long-running battle with Swedish
and British authorities, saying he should
be allowed to walk free immediately and
compensated for the years he has lost.
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary
Detention, which falls under the offices
of the UN human rights chief, said Assange has been arbitrarily detained
by Britain and Sweden since December
2010, when he was first sought for
questioning on allegations of sexual
misconduct.
The panels recommendation was
immediately rejected by Swedish and
British officials who said Assanges legal situation is unchanged. He remains
in the Embassy of Ecuador in London,
where he has been holed up for more
than three years ago.
No charges have been filed against
Assange in Sweden so far, but Swedish
prosecutors want to question him over
allegations of rape stemming from a
working visit he made to the country
in 2010 when WikiLeaks was attracting
international attention for its secretspilling. He is also sought by Britain for
jumping bail.
DENIED
Assange has consistently denied the
allegations but has refused to return to
Sweden to meet with prosecutors and
eventually took the decision to seek
refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in
London, where he has lived since June
2012.
Speaking by video link from the embassy, Assange told a news conference
the finding that he has been unlawfully
detained is a significant victory that completely vindicates him.
The lawfulness of my detention or
otherwise is now a matter of settled law,
Assange said.
He said the finding brought a smile
to his face.
Assange accused British Foreign
Secretary Philip Hammond of insulting

Lock Of John Lennons

Hair Fetches $35,000
At Auction
A LOCK of John Lennons hair that
was snipped as he prepared for a film
role has sold for $35,000.
Dallas-based Heritage Auctions said
last month that the four-inch lock of
hair was purchased by Paul Fraser, a
United Kingdom-based memorabilia
collector.
A German hairdresser kept a tuft of
Lennons hair after giving him a trim
before the Beatle started filming How
I Won the War, a dark comedy released
in 1967. The movie follows the World
War II misadventures of British troops
led by an inept commander.
The hair was one of several Beatlesrelated items on auction. A photograph
of the iconic band signed by all four
members went for $42,500. And a
sealed copy of the bands butcher
cover for the Yesterday and Today
album went for $125,000.

the UN in his comments about the case.

Hammond had called the finding frankly
ridiculous because Assange is free to
leave the embassy at any time.
I find those comments to be beneath
the stature that a foreign minister should
express in this situation, Assange said.
VICTORY
British and Swedish officials maintain
the panels finding has no legal force, but
it represents a public relations victory for
Assange, who argues that the allegations
against him are part of a plot to send him
to the United States to face more possible
charges related to WikiLeaks release of
classified documents.
It is not clear if US judicial officials are
seeking Assanges arrest on US charges.
Britains Foreign Office said in a
statement it would formally contest the
panels opinion.
This changes nothing. We completely
reject any claim that Julian Assange
is a victim of arbitrary detention, the
Foreign Office said in a statement. Julian Assange has never been arbitrarily
detained by the UK The opinion of the
UN Working Group ignores the facts and
the well-recognized protections of the
British legal system.
It countered that Assange was voluntarily avoiding lawful arrest by choosing
to remain in the Ecuadorean embassy.
Karin Rosander, spokeswoman for the
Swedish Prosecution Authority, said that
under Swedish law the panels conclusion
will have no formal impact.

DraftKings is making its long delayed
international push as its industry
continues to face scrutiny in the US
The Boston-based company said
last month it had officially launched
its website in the United Kingdom.
Regulators there granted DraftKings
a gambling license in August.
The company had targeted a launch
toward the end of 2015 but pushed
that release to early this year, saying
the product was still being worked on.
The company indicated the release
was imminent in recent weeks,

announcing partnerships with English Premier League clubs Arsenal,

The legality of daily fantasy sports
has been challenged in states including Hawaii, Illinois, New York,
Nevada and Texas.

Irish Deploy Military- Entertainer Paul Daniels Diagnosed

With Incurable Brain Tumour
Style Checkpoints To
Suppress Gang War
RR By Shawn Pogatchnik

IRELANDS police force deployed

military-style road checkpoints last
month as the government announced
toughened measures to try to prevent
a gang war in Dublin from claiming
more lives.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald
said a 55-member armed police unit
would be created for Dublin in hopes
of suppressing what she called an
evil and sinister cycle of gangland
violence.
The move is significant in a country
where police typically patrol unarmed.
It was announced at an emergency
meeting with police chiefs following
February 8 killing of a brother of Gerry
The Monk Hutch, a gang chieftain
credited with directing many of Irelands most famous bank heists.
Taxi driver Eddie Hutch, 59, was
shot several times in the hallway of
his home. He was targeted in apparent retaliation for a gun attack on a
boxing weigh-in being attended by
senior figures from a rival gang led
by Irish fugitive Christy Kinahan, the
other key figure in the underworld
bloodletting.
TARGETED
In the earlier attack, five gunmen allegedly from the Hutch camp targeted
Kinahan loyalists arriving at the hotel
for the boxing event. The gunmen, including three armed with Kalashnikov
assault rifles and disguised as an elite
police unit, shot three men, killing one,
in front of scores of civilians including
young children.
The violence focuses on the international drug-trafficking business of
Kinahan, a Dubliner who following
prison sentences in Ireland and the
Netherlands runs his empire from a
villa in Spains Costa del Sol. Police in
Ireland, Britain and Spain opened a

probe into his operations in 2008, the

same year Kinahan jumped bail in Belgium over money-laundering charges.
Since 2014, the Kinahan cartel has
been blamed for killing a string of
former members accused of pilfering
vast sums from drug deals, and this has
brought him into collision with Hutchs
crew, who previously cooperated with
Kinahan drug traffickers. A nephew,
Gary Hutch, was gunned down in
Spain in September 2015 after reportedly rebuffing the demands of Kinahan
henchmen for a six-figure payment.
REJECTED
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, leader
of Dublins one million Catholics,
rejected some politicians calls to
serve as mediator between the Hutch
and Kinahan camps. He appealed to
the killers own partners, mothers
and other loved ones to apply moral
pressure on them in the home and
for neighbors of gangsters to remind
them they are not untouchable by
tipping off police about their activities.
These are turf wars about pumping drugs into our children, Martin
said. The danger of negotiating with
them is to give them status. They are
criminals.
Police found the getaway car used
by Eddie Hutchs killers abandoned
about a mile away with balaclava
masks and a container of fuel still
inside, a sign that the attackers didnt
have enough time to torch the car and
destroy forensic evidence.
Fitzgerald said police were staking
out the residences of the most likely
targets in Dublins gangland feud and
would saturate high-crime areas
with road checkpoints designed to
make it harder for any killers to operate. She said gang associates who
have fears for their safety should tell
police directly.

MAGICIAN and entertainer

Paul Daniels has been diagnosed with terminal cancer,
his family said last month.
A statement from his publicist said the entertainer
had been diagnosed with an
incurable brain tumour, and
thanked well-wishers for their
support.
His wife, Debbie McGee, tweeted:
With great sadness.
Middlesbrough-born Daniels, 77,
whose career has spanned nearly 40
years, realised fame in the 1980s with
his BBC TV series The Paul Daniels
Magic Show.
Mark Linsey, acting director of BBC
Television, said: Were sorry to hear
this sad news and our thoughts are with
Paul and his family.
Daniels, real name Newton Edward
Daniels, developed his magic skills
in working mens clubs. He made his
TV debut on talent series Opportunity
Knocks in 1970, coming in second.
He was then given a regular slot on
ITV variety show The Wheeltappers And
Shunters Social Club, hosted by the late
comedian Bernard Manning.
He made the move to the BBC in

1979 and launched The Paul

Daniels Magic Show, which ran
for 15 years.
He became one of the biggest
stars on British TV, becoming
known for a string of catchphrases, including the line: Youll like
this... not a lot, but youll like it.
He said he had first used the
line at a club in Yorkshire as a way of
dealing with a heckler.
Daniels and his wife, a fellow performer and his on-stage assistant,
married in 1988.
As well as numerous appearances
on magic shows, Daniels has presented game shows including Wipeout
and Odd One Out.
He appeared as a contestant on the
BBCs Strictly Come Dancing in 2010,
and was the second person to be voted
off in the series.
In recent years, Daniels and his wife
have toured regularly with a magic
and comedy show, but a planned appearance at the Leicester Comedy
Festival last month was cancelled at
short notice, as was another date in
Nottingham the following night.
Daniels manager said all his future
shows had been cancelled.

British Defense Secretary Visits Falklands Islands

BRITAINS defense secretary paid tribute to fallen British veterans on a visit
last month to the contested Falkland
Islands and said the election of a new
government in Argentina could open
the door for better relations between
the countries.
Michael Fallon was the first British
defense chief to visit the islands in more
than a decade. The ministry tweeted a
photograph of him standing in front of
a memorial to the fallen. He bowed his
head in front of an obelisk that read: In
Memory of Those Who Liberated Us.
Britain reclaimed the islands in 1982
several months after they were seized by
Argentine soldiers. The remote islands
in the South Atlantic are claimed by both

countries. Argentina calls them the Islas

Malvinas and under former President
Cristina Fernandez there was an escalating war of words with Britain.
Asked about the recent election of
President Mauricio Macri to replace
Fernandez, Fallon said it opened the door
to better relations between the countries
and with South America in general.
I hope that opportunity can now be
taken, he said.
Argentina claims Britain has illegally
occupied the islands since 1833. Britain
disputes the claim and says Argentina
is ignoring the wishes of the islands
residents who voted overwhelmingly in
a referendum in 2013 to remain a British
territory.

back of the net. John Mikel Obi leveled it for
the blues during the 45th minute injury time,
while Edinson Cavani got the winner for the
hosts in the 78th minute.
The first legs of the round of 32 in the
Europa League Cup, February 18, saw
Liverpool in Germany, where they held FC
Augsburg to a goalless draw. Manchester
United had 13 first teamers injured for the
game in Denmark against FC Midtylland,
including Wayne Rooney. Memphis Depay,
put Van Gaals men ahead in the 37th minute,
but the Danes equalized just before the break,
and snatched the winner in the 77th minute for
a 2-1 result. Tottenham Hotspur tied 1-1 in
Italy against Fiorentina, after a Nacer Chadli
penalty eight minutes before half-time, but
the Italians got one back in the 59th minute.

English League Cup

The second semi-final legs of the Capital One English League Cup, produced a
Liverpool-Manchester at Wembley, February 28. Liverpool and Stoke City went to
penalties after both sides ended with a 1-1
aggregate. Jurgen Klopps squad prevailed
6-5 on penalties. Manchester City had lost
2-1 at Everton, but at the Etihad Stadium, a
3-1 victory put the Citizens in the final. Fernandinho, Kevin de Bruyne (later carried off
with a nasty knee injury) and Sergio Aguero
were the marksmen, with Ross Barkley,
netting for the Toffees.

FA Cup

The fourth round of the FA Cup, late January brought little glory for the smaller clubs in
the lower tier, but Division Ones Shrewsbury
Town upset the Championships Sheffield
Wednesday at Green House Meadows
winning 3-2. A Jack Grimmer goal seven
minutes in to injury time provided the tonic.

Division Ones Peterborough Utd, held West

Bromwich Albion 2-2 at the Hawthorns. Jon
Taylor put the Posh ahead in the replay, but
Darren Fletcher levelled it. Extra-time was
played and then to a penalty shoot-out where
the Albion won 4-3.
The big clubs charged on. Manchester
United won 3-1 at Derby County, while Tottenham overwhelmed Colchester Utd 4-1
in front of their own fans. Manchester City
triumphed 4-0 at Villa Park, as the struggling
Aston Villa, deep in the relegation zones
could find no answers. Arsenal prevailed
2-1 against Burnley at the Emirates, while
Chelsea moved into top gear at MK Dons
with a 5-1 victory.

Scottish Soccer

The semi-finals of the Scottish League

Cup, last weekend of January, witnessed
both games played at Hampden Park. Celtic
was bundled out 3-2 against Ross County.
The Hoops were 2-0 up after 13 minutes
with goals by Gary Mackay-Stevens and
Efe Ambrose, but then Ambrose was redcarded two minutes later giving a penalty
away that Martin Woods converted. Playing
with ten men took its toll on Celtic, as Paul
Quinn netted three minutes after the break
and Alex Schalk got the winner in the 63rd
minute. The other semi-final saw Hibernian
win 2-1 against St Johnstone. A Jason Cummings penalty in the 29th minute put Hibs
ahead, but Joe Shaughnessy levelled it four
minutes later. John McGinns 74th minute
effort proved the decider.

Celtic And Rangers Through

A fourth round Scottish Cup replay at

Forfar Athletic, saw junior side Linlithgow
Rose steal the glory with five minutes of extra
time to go, after Kevin Kelbie scored the only
goal of the game. The sides had previously
ended 3-3 in the first match.
The fifth round, February 6-7, witness both
remaining junior sides exit. Home side Ross
County, proved too strong for Linlithgow
Rose, even though the Rose went ahead just
before the break with an own goal by Jamie
Beckford. Brian Graham replied with a brace
as the County eventually took control for
4-2 winning result. Lowland Leaguers East
Kilbride, playing at home, kept Celtic at bay
until the 21st minute when Leigh Griffiths

netted. Colin Kazim-Richards got another

one in the 50th minute and the Hoops came
away with a 2-0 win. Scottish Cup holders Inverness CT won 2-1 at Motherwell. Rangers
were held 0-0 at Ibrox against Kilmarnock,
where the visitors Kallum Higginbotham
was sent off in the last couple of minutes.
Rangers won the replay at Rugby Park 2-1.
A Martyn Waghorn penalty in the third minute
gave Rangers impetus, while Killies McKenzie found an equalizer, before Nicky Clark
clinched the result in the 92nd minute. Hearts
and Hibernian drew 2-2, while the replay saw
both sides end with ten men apiece. Jason
Cummings scored for the only goal of the
game for Hibs in the fourth minute, and was
later red-carded.

The American Game

Early last month, Jurgen Klinsmann

had the American squad warm up for the
approaching World Cup qualifiers, with two
matches at Carson, California. The United
States beat Iceland 3-2 in the first game,
where a goal by Steve Birnbaum in injury
time proved the winner. Iceland had gone
ahead in the 13th minute, Jozy Altidore
equalized seven minutes later. Iceland went
ahead again three minutes after half-time,
before Michael Orozco made it even. The
second match saw Jozy Altidore, score the
only goal of the game against Canada, with
just two minutes left on the clock.

United used to take pity on City. Manchester derbies were embarrassing mismatches
City won just one of 26 meetings between
1981 and 2002 and some United fans even
craved a stronger city rival.
Now they have one, and pity has been
supplanted by jealousy with news that
Guardiola will leave Bayern Munich at the
end of the season to take over at City on a
three-year contract.
TAKEOVER
Citys takeover by Sheikh Mansour in
2008, the injection of millions of pounds into
the club and the surrounding infrastructure
of an area in need of regrowth changed the
fortune of the blue side of Manchester.
What United supporters would give for
Citys attacking style of play, its recent haul
of silverware, its sparkling $300m academy,
and now its new coach. Its hard to believe
that 17 years ago, United was on its way to
a Champions League-Premier League-FA
Cup treble, while City was languishing in
Englands third tier.
United can only dream of winning the
Champions League these days. The way

things are going under Louis van Gaal, the

team wont even be in the competition next
season.
Citys hiring of Guardiola must be a worry
to the United hierarchy, which has to act fast.
Meandering along with Van Gaal will surely
see United slip further behind its hard to
see City not improving with Guardiolas pull
and his demanding leadership and the lure
of the currently unemployed Jose Mourinho
might just have intensified in the corridors
of Old Trafford.
SIGNINGS
United has spent $375m on new players
over the past two seasons, seemingly to little
effect judging by the string of uninspiring displays in recent months. The US-based Glazer
family, which owns United, must now sign off
a similar wave of signings to keep in touch.
Yet, put yourself in the shoes of a Paul
Pogba, a Robert Lewandowski or a John
Stones three of the many players who may
have been on Uniteds radar and are now being linked with City since Guardiolas arrival
was announced last month. Citys appeal
must surely be greater for players seeking a
combination of trophies, luxury and personal
improvement.
That attraction even goes as far as the
academy setup. City, with its sprawling,
state-of-the-art 80-acre campus, is picking
up the best youngsters in the region even
former United players Robin van Persie
and Phil Neville have sent their sons there.
Uniteds once-famed academy, meanwhile, is
reportedly in turmoil, without a director since
May last year, and currently undergoing a
root-and-branch review.
Citys under-14 team beat its United

Pep Guardiola

counterpart 9-0 this season, and Uniteds

under-18s lost 11 straight league matches.
UNRIVALLED
United can still rise again. Commercially,
the club is unrivalled barely a week goes
past when United isnt announcing a new,
global sponsorship deal and it has the
largest annual revenues in English soccer.
It is also still widely regarded as Englands
No 1 club because of its history and trophy
haul of a record 20 league titles and three
European Cups.
Soccer players look for more these days,
though. Being in the Champions League is
a necessity to entice the best, potentially a
concern for United, but Guardiolas name
may be just as big a pull.
Backed by the wealth of its Abu Dhabi
owner, City has established itself as the biggest force in England and can only get bigger
with Guardiola in charge. Its players appear

to be coasting under the avuncular Manuel

Pellegrini and they are still contending in four
competitions this season. Imagine the levels
they can reach under Guardiola.
No wonder Citys shadow is looming large
over United.
The noisy neighbors as Alex Ferguson
once called City have just gotten noisier.

The fifth round of the FA Cup, February 2021, brought little satisfaction for the clubs in
the lower divisions, while Championship leaders Hull City, who forged a scoreless game
at the Emirates will need a replay to progress.
Arsenal had prioritized their approaching
Champions League tie over the Tigers fixture
and the team was picked accordingly. Reading, another Championship side in the mix,
came from a goal down against West Bromwich Albion to win a home tie 3-1. A Scott
Wootton own goal put Leeds out at Watford,
who won 1-0, while a goal on the break by
Martin Kelly gave Crystal Palace the only
score in the game at White Hart Lane against
Tottenham. Everton showed their talent with
a 2-0 win at Bournemouth, while West Ham
Utd blasted Blackburn Rover 5-1 at Ewood

sides down to ten men .At Stamford Bridge,
Chelsea annihilated Manchester City 5-1.

Bristol Rovers Bought By

Jordanian Family

A JORDANIAN family has bought English

fourth-tier club Bristol Rovers.
The Al-Qadi family has taken a 92 percent
stake in the 133-year-old club, which is
eighth in League Two and only one point from
the promotion playoff places.
Wael Al-Qadi, a Jordanian Football Association member, has been named president
of the southwest England club.
Al-Qadi says we really see the potential
of this great club. We want to improve in all
areas, not just on the field.
Rovers have played at the 11,916-capacity
Memorial Stadium since 1996 but are looking
to build a larger venue.

De Bruyne Confirms 10 Week

Layoff With Injury

MAN CITY midfielder Kevin

De Bruyne says hell be out
for action for approximately
10 weeks after injuring his
ankle and knee in Manchester Citys League Cup
semifinal win over Everton
last month.
The Belgium international was carried off
on a stretcher, with his right leg in a brace,
near the end of Citys 3-1 win that sets up a
final against Liverpool in February.
De Bruyne confirmed his layoff via his
Twitter account which rules him out of the
Wembley finale.
Just got back from the specialist. Ill be
out for around 10 weeks, De Bruyne said.
The 24-year-old De Bruyne has scored
five goals in five appearances in the League
Cup this season, including at least one in
every round.

Cole Impresses In MLSDebut

For LA Galaxy

ASHLEY COLE last month moved to California

to join Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane
among the stars in the LA Galaxy.
The longtime England defender signed for
the Galaxy and became the latest European
veteran to join the five-time Major League
Soccer champions.
In his debut against a Tijuana team Cole
looked sharp and made a few of his lungbusting runs down the wing.
Keane said of Cole: Ashley is a top-class
player, and I know him very, very well,
said Keane, the former Tottenham striker.
Definitely one of the best left backs in the
game for the last 15 years, theres no question. I think its important that we get players
like Ashley Cole in here. If you look at last
year in terms of goals we conceded, it was
definitely way too much. The guys coming in
will certainly help us at the back.
The Galaxy worked for months to acquire
Cole, who obtained a release from his contract at Roma earlier this month.

Bayern Coach Pep Guardiola

Hits Out At Media Treatment

BAYERN MUNICH coach Pep Guardiola

says there is no conflict between his current
position and preparing for his future role at
Manchester City.
Guardiola says I can control both situations.
The Spaniard was visibly annoyed regarding questions about his future club,
saying Ill only talk about Manchester City
in May, June. Ill talk about Manchester City
in England.
Ahead of last months Bundesliga game at
Bayer Leverkusen, Guardiola also hit out at
the media, saying theres no respect these
days for our job. Its all the same what we
say. People dont believe my words.
Guardiola has announced he will leave
Bayern at the end of the season. Guardiola
will take over as City coach on a three-year
deal.

MAN UNITED manager Louis van Gaal cast

doubt on his teams chances of qualifying
for next seasons Champions League after a
2-1 loss at relegation-threatened Sunderland
in the Premier League, placing the Dutchman
under fresh scrutiny last month.
The embarrassing loss for United this
season was sealed by a late goal in the
82nd minute, with a goal-line clearance from
Anthony Martial cannoning off the back of
goalkeeper David de Gea and into the net.
It will be very difficult now, Van Gaal
said about United finishing in the top four.
Its too much at this time.
It was just a week earlier that Van Gaal
was talking up Uniteds chances of winning
the league title. Yet, the 20-time champions
on 41 points have never had fewer points

WEST BROMWICH Albion captain Chris

Brunt said he feels absolutely disgusted and
ashamed after being hit near his left eye from
a coin thrown by one of the teams supporters following an FA Cup match February 20.
Brunt went over to applaud the West Brom
fans after the teams 3-1 loss at Reading in
the fifth round match. He went down clutching his face, and then confronted a group of
supporters before being led away by match
stewards and a teammate.
Brunt later spoke to the BBC with a cut
under his eye, saying: They thought it was
OK to throw a coin at their own players. Im
disgusted . they paid a lot of money to come,
but a small minority spoilt it.
The English Football Association said it
was investigating the incident, as well as
crowd disturbances among West Brom fans.

Marcus Bent Gets 12-Month

Suspended Jail Sentence

FORMER English Premier

League player Marcus Bent
was handed a 12-month
suspended jail sentence last
month for confronting two
police officers with a meat
cleaver and a kitchen knife
while under the influence of cocaine.
The 37-year-old Bent had pleaded guilty to
possession of cocaine and affray in previous
hearings at Guildford Crown Court.
Prosecutor Lee Harris said Bent, who
played for Everton, Ipswich and Charlton in
Englands top league, was wild with rage
as he confronted officers after calling police
to report intruders in his flat. No intruders
were discovered, but officers found a small
amount of cocaine.
The incident occurred on September 13
last year.
Judge Stephen Climie told Bent that he had
lost his good character and his self-respect,
but praised him for his work with a youth
football team.
Andrew Henley, defending Bent, said that
his client was no longer using cocaine and
had self-medicated with the drug.
Bent was also ordered to pay 2,000 in
compensation and court fees, and given 200
hours community service as well as a twomonth night-time curfew.

Bolton Granted Extra Time By

Court Due To Takeover

BOLTON WANDERERS are celebrating after

being granted a 14-day adjournment by the
High Court to complete their takeover.
The club were faced with a winding up
petition from HMRC over an unpaid tax bill
worth 3m but lobbied the court to give them
extra time to get a deal over the line.
Sports Shield, the consortium led by
ex-Wanderers striker Dean Holdsworth, are
now in a position to buy the club from Eddie
Davies although the details of their bid must
first be approved by the owner, and then the
Football League.
Their bid has now been revealed as a joint
venture with accountant Bruce Gordon, who
runs venture capital fund Thames Valley Ltd
and used to work for Deloitte.
Paperwork on the deal was signed and
completed just minutes before last months
hearing in London, which led to a brief delay
as a witness statement was read.

England Players Looking To Hit

Form Ready For Euros

THOUGHTS are starting to turn to the

European Championship in June and July,
and many of Englands likely players are in
strong form.
As well as Rooney, striker Harry Kane has
scored in his last three league games to move
to 20 goals for the season, while Leicester
striker Jamie Vardys double including a
stunning long-range effort against Liverpool last month moved him to league-high
18 goals.
Dele Alli and Ross Barkley could be
fighting for the attacking midfielder slot in
Englands team and both youngsters were
in superb form last month.

Liverpool Agrees To Deal With

Schalke To Sign Matip

LIVERPOOL has reached an agreement with

Schalke to sign Cameroon defender Joel
Matip at the end of the season, in the English
clubs latest effort to shore up its problems
at center back.
Both clubs announced the deal for the
24-year-old Matip last month.
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp knows
about Matip from the coachs time in the
Bundesliga in charge of Borussia Dortmund.
Matip, who played for Cameroon in the
last two World Cup finals, has been playing
professionally at Schalke since 2009.

A GIRL told police that England

soccer international Adam Johnson
knew she was aged 15 before they
engaged in sexual activity in his car,
a court heard February 15.
A video recording of a police
interview with the girl was played
at a court in Bradford, northern
England, where Johnson is on trial
after denying two counts of sexual
activity with a child.
Johnson, who was fired by English
club Sunderland last month, has
already pleaded guilty to grooming
and another charge of sexual activity
with a 15-year-old girl.
Asked in the interview what Johnson knew about her, the girl said he
knew how old she was, what school
year she was in, and where she sat
at Sunderland matches. She said
Johnson also knew her date of birth.
The girl broke down in tears later
while she was being cross-examined
live over a video link by the lawyer
defending Johnson.
She had been questioned over why
she asked friends to lie about what
allegedly happened with Johnson.
SCARED
I was scared that people wouldnt
believe me, the girl said.
Prosecutors said that Johnson
abused his revered position in society by having sexual contact with a
15-year-old girl who idolized him
Resuming the trial at Bradford
Crown Court, prosecutor Kate
Blackwell said the girl involved was
a season-ticket holder at Sunderland
and regarded Johnson as her absolute hero.
Blackwell said Johnson made
contact with the girl after receiving a
Facebook friend request late in 2014,
arranged to meet her, and was made
aware she was aged 15.
Knowing that she looked up to
him, (Johnson) made a conscious
decision to act in a way that he knew
was both morally and legally wrong,
Blackwell said.
The prosecutor said Johnson was
in contact with the girl while he
lived with his partner, who was then
pregnant with their daughter.

Cricket: South Africa Edge

England In Odi Series
AFTER winning the four match Test series in
South Africa 2-1, England lost the five game
ODIs series 3-2. England warmed up against
the South African A side winning easily by
163 runs. England 368 (James Taylor 116)7 at 50 overs. South Africa A 205 all out.
England would take a 2-0 lead in the ODIs
games, but lose the series 3-2. Rain interfered during the first match at Bloemfontein
and the Duckworth/Lewis method was used
as England won by 39 runs. England 399 (Jos
Buttler 105)-9 at 50 overs. South Africa 250
(Quinton de Kock 138)-5 at close. At Port
Elizabeth, England prevailed by five wickets.
South Africa 262-7 at 50 overs. England 2635 at close. South Africa won the third match
at Centurion by 7 wickets. England 318 (Joe
Root 125)-8 at 50 overs. South Africa 319
(Quinton de Kock 135, Hashim Amla 127)3 at close. The series went 2-2 after South
Africa won by one wicket at Johannesburg.
England 262 all out. South Africa 266-9 at
close with 2.4 overs left to bowl. The final
match at Capetown, the South Africans won
by five wickets. England 236 (Alex Hales
112) all out for 45 overs. South Africa 237
(AB de Villiers 101)-5 at close.

Tennis: Scottish Talent Rampant

At Melbourne

The first Grand Slam of 2016, the Australian Open at Melbourne, January 18-31,
witnessed Andy Murray reach his fifth final in
the Australian heartland, but for the fifth time
he remained unsuccessful. Facing old rival
Novak Djokovic, who he has beaten only nine
times in their thirty career encounters, saw a
series of events play on his mind beside tennis, as the Serb captured his sixth Australian
title winning 6-1, 7-5 7-6, (7-3) Murrays
concentration was off kilter, as wife Kim, was
expecting a child (they had a baby girl)and
was near the due date, while father-in-law
Nigel Sears, who coaches Ana Ivanovic,
suffered a seizure watching his protg and
was rushed to hospital. A disappointed Murray headed immediately for the airport eager
to catch the first plane home, after completing
his media responsibilities. Murrays victims
included Bernard Tomic (Aus) David Ferrer
in the quarters, and Joao Sousa of Portugal
in the semi-finals.
Brother Jamie Murray, and partner Bruno
Soares of Brazil, claimed their first Grand
Slam mens doubles crown beating Daniel
Nestor of Canada and the Czech, Radek

Stepanek, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Incredibly, the pair

had only being playing together for a month,
while Murray, becomes the first Brit to win an
Aussie mens doubles title in 82 years. More
Scottish success in the wheelchair singles
where Gordon Reid beat Joachim Gerard
7-6 (9-7) 6-4 in the final. The 24-year-old
Reid, reached the mens wheelchair doubles
final too, partnered by Shingo Kunieda, but
the pair lost to the French duo of Stephane
Houdet and Nicolas Peifir.

Rhys Priestland to give the visitors a 16-13
lead with ten minutes on the clock.
But Irelands Jonny Sexton levelled the
scores with a penalty and both sides ended
with a single point that denied them both of
the chance of a Grand Slam and the Triple
Crown. No wonder England were smiling as
the weekend came to a close.

Konta Reaches Semi-Finals

Johanna Konta produced the best tennis

of her career and became the first British
women to reach a Grand Slam singles
semi-final in 33 years, facing the seventh
seed Angelique Kerber of Germany. Kerber
had the edge beating Konta 7-5, 6-2, but the
British girl took home the biggest check on
her tennis resume. Kontas world ranking
improved immensely however, going from 47
to 28th. Kerber would go on to thwart Serena
Williams attempt for a 22nd Grand Slam title,
beating the American, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the
final, becoming the first German to win a
Major singles crown since 1999.

First Round

ALL CREDIT to Italy for getting to within one
lousy drop goal attempt and beating France.
The last-minute chance fell to Sergio Parisse
who had already scored a try in this match.
Backrow forwards, alas, are not the sort of
people youd turn to for a winning drop-goal
and Parisse predictably made an awful mess
when he could have waited for another few
moments to give his flyhalf the chance.
Later in the afternoon, England took a
great step forward up at Murrayfield where
they comprehensively blunted the Scotland
attacks, restricting the home side to three
penalty goals. Their success was by no
means spectacular but they scored two
tries based on their forward dominance. One
man stood out Billy Vunipola at No 8. He
rightly earned the Man of the Match award
for his outstanding ball-carrying, defence
and driving.
The England game under their new coach
Eddie Jones is anything but exciting but these
days you dont see much of the ball since
it spends most of its time surrounded by
massive forwards.
Ireland had to overcome the absence
through injury of a good third of their peferred
team but despite that raced into a 13-0 leaving Wales clearly puzzled. But back came
the boyos and their powerful scrummaging
was rewarded with a try for Toby Faletau and

Fed Cup

Britains women competed at the Federation Cup in Eilat, Israel, in the Europe/Africa
Group 1, where skipper Judy Murray was
forced through injuries to bring in 16-year-old
Kate Swan; born in Bristol, lives in Kansas.
Heather Watson and the doubles duo of
Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith completed
the line-up. The format was two singles and
a doubles match. Britain beat South Africa
3-0, and then Georgia 2-1, with Kate Swan
winning both her games. A 2-1 loss against
Belgium, with both Watson and Swan losing,
ended Britains progress Venus Williams
claimed her 49th career title winning the Taiwan Open, February 14, after beating Misaki
Doi of Japan, 6-4, 6-2.

Ireland succumbed to appalling weather
and brutal French tactics in Paris. The reigning champions couldnt add to their single
point from the draw with Wales. Jonny Sexton
put over three penalties before a heavy tackle
side-lined him and France scored a try under
the post to give them a narrow victory.
Scotland are no good at beating Wales, it
being 2007 when they last won. Wales went
off like a rocket and scrum-half Gareth Davies
ran in a fifty-metre try. But Scotland then
looked the likelier winners as they dominated
the middle half of the game.

But as the game drifted towards the death,

unstoppable runs, first close in from Jamie
Roberts then from George North further out
grabbed the initiative and the victory for
Wales. Scotland looked good value for a
win two lovely tries and good kicking from
Greig Laidlaw but sadly their season collapsed under them.
Italy appeared to be in with a shout as this
game moved to the final quarter a penalty
away from the lead but England roared into
life, found accuracy and power and stormed
to victory. A hat-trick of tries from Jonathan
Joseph was the stand-out feature but in truth
England were far too good and will be the
side to beat.
Coach Eddie Jones can feel satisfied with
his early work as England topped the table
after the opening shots and they have a
precious points advantage in the bag.

Man United To Rename Stand

After Club Legend Bobby Charlton
MAN UNITED great Bobby Charlton is
to have a stand at Old Trafford named
after him in honor of his contribution
to the club.
The South Stand the side of the
stadium where the dugouts and changing
rooms are located will be renamed the
Sir Bobby Charlton Stand at an unveiling
ceremony before the home match against
Everton in the Premier League on April
2. It will mark 60 years after Charlton
made his debut for United.
This is a great honor and I am very
proud for myself and my family, said
the 78-year-old Charlton, the former
England attacking midfielder who played
758 games for United and scored a club-

record 249 goals.

Manchester United has been such
an important part of my life and I have
so many wonderful memories of this
Theatre of Dreams.
FIGURES
United said the unveiling of the
stands new name will be attended by
key figures from Sir Bobbys life and the
world of football.
Bobby is, quite simply, the most
iconic figure in English football history,
said Ed Woodward, Uniteds executive
vice-chairman. A player, a diplomat, a
gentleman and a tireless worker for charity, he represents everything that is good
about football and Manchester United.
